I discovered this hidden gem while wandering around the neighborhood and it might just be the best bakery in the North End. My family has lived in Charlestown for 13 years and for whatever reason, I had never visited Parziale's. Big mistake, but glad I found it now. The bread was baked to perfection! Soft and warm. Loved the family run and quaint feel of this modest italian bakery. Once I walked in, I was overwhelmed by the colorful array of italian wedding cookies, cannoli, biscotti, cupcakes, whoopie pies... The Sicilian pizza here is most definitely "Woo hoo! As good as it gets!". I live in the North End and whenever I have company who has never been to the neighborhood before I like to give them my own personal North End Pizza Tour. We usually end at Parziale's because it is the best and you have to save the best for last. All of there cookies and breads are amazing as well, my all time favs are any and all things with fig! Are you looking for a small bakery that is not crowded with tourists and a good and quick dessert for less than $3? If you said yes, then this place has your answer. This place is located several paces away from the major streets and they have a large selection of various cookies and they also have some cannoli as well. The cannoli here is great. Although you cannot customize it much, the ricotta cheese is great. I really liked the creamy and rich sweetness combined with the slight crunch of the shell. A tiny bit of powdered sugar added to the cannoli, and I found myself eating a really tasty dessert. Although this place does not have much variety in their cannoli, it is still probably one of the tastiest cannoli I have eaten from this neighborhood. The cookies are great, and there are many different varieties you can choose from. I was able to get a cookie with a raspberry with a tiny bit of walnut inside the cookie. It was not too hard to bite into, and it was also not too chewy, which made it a really good cookie. Buying a box of cookies from this place is a good choice if you are bringing a simple dessert for a Thanksgiving or Christmas party. One cannoli and a cookie was about $2.90, and it's a great choice for an afternoon snack after a long day at work or class combined with a nice cold glass of milk as well. One major disadvantage is that they tend to run out of certain things such as Macaroons. Hopefully they would have some more in the future. They only take cash, so have some in your wallet. Overall, this is a great alternative choice for some cannoli and some cookies if you find the popular bakeries such as Modern Pastry or Mike's Pastry too crowded and you want the small feel of a simple bakery. If you are a first time visitor and was able to eat some cannoli at popular bakeries, this place is still a great choice if you are looking for a simple but possibly better cannoli. read more

I read about this small bakery on Yelp! and thought I'd give it a go in my walk through the North End. I can't speak to the bread, which is what most of the reviews seem to rave about, so please don't discount this bakery if you're looking for fresh bread! I came here to try a slice of pizza, because when in the North End you've got to try pizza, right? I have to report it was largely unremarkable. Not horrible, not awesome - just a piece of pizza. I was expecting more. I'll definitely try them again for a bread option (though it'll be hard to tear myself away from Bricco Panetteria on Hanover) but will give the pizza a pass. Best cannoli I've had in probably...forever. The ricotta was nice and thick and not too sweet. The shell was unbelievably fresh and delicious. I highly recommend getting the chocolate chips. These are not store-bought nestle chips. They are real deal good quality chocolate! Forget Mike's and Modern (and don't bother with Bova). The cannolis here are where it's at! I'm not much a fan of Sicilian style, sweet sauce pizza, but you still have to try the best when you come to the North End and this is as close to perfect I've seen it. Canolis, of course, but raspberry walnut, lemon and chocolate chip shortbread cookies are favorites out of the dozens of them. A perfectly baked chocolate biscotti is also a favorite. Stopped at the place on the corner first (can't remember the name but had "Famous" in quotes on the sign) took a look around and said, "Meh". So, walked over to Parziale's (which had initially caught my eye, in this case my gut was right.) First sign of a great Italian bakery: cannolis filled to order. Second sign of a great bakery, they only had a few choices of breads and cookies - not too much variety, so you know that whatever they make its going to be good. Third sign, the door to the kitchen was open so you could see the clean kitchen and ovens with the guys working in the back, and bright yellow semolina still on the floor from the baking completed earlier in the day. If they let you see the back, and its clean, you're in good shape. Oh yeah, none of the cookies looked like they'd been sitting around for ah-hem days... they weren't sweaty like the other place... The bread looked divine, but I was playing tourist with my friends who live in Boston so I got: 1 cannoli (sans powdered sugar) and 6 chocolate lace cookies. DAMN. These people know what they are doing! The cannoli shells were fantastic, the filling was divine I tell you, divine. It was smooth, creamy and rich but not crazy rich, sweet but just the right amount. Heaven. The cookies were equally good, with some cinnamon (I think) mixed in with the almond praline. This place is mega-sketchy looking from the outside. It's tiny, pretty bare, and they have a very limited variety of amazing looking crusty breads, traditional cookies, and two types of fruit squares when I went in. I'm declaring fighting words. Yesterday, at Parziale's, I had (dare I say it?) THE BEST CANNOLI EVER! I asked the woman at the counter if they filled their cannolli with frosting (because I hate that kind), and the woman looked so disgusted that I even suggest people do such a blasphemous thing. She told me they make theirs with farmer's ricotta. It was not too big, not too sweet, and the pastry was flaky with just a bit of a crisp, dense doughiness to it. I just completed a blind cannoli taste off with 2 others. Rules: Compared only Regular Cannolis. Randomized order. Competitors: Maria's, Mike's, Modern, Parziale's, and one from random shop not in north end. Results: 1) All 3 tasters voted for whatever they tasted first. Maria's, Modern, and Parziale's all received first place votes. 2) All Said Mike's had bland shell compared to others. 3) All 3 tasters said the cannoli not from North End was no where near as good as any from north end. Taster 1 votes: Maria+Modern (tie for 1st), Parziale's, Mike's Taster 2 votes: Modern, Maria's, Parziale's, Mike's Taster 3 votes, Parziale's, Modern, Maria's, Mike's Our conclusion: You can't really go wrong with a cannoli in the North end. All are 5 star eateries. But do the taste-off for yourself--you deserve it. Regarding Parziale's specifically: We only got the cannoli. Cannoli has a simple shell with perfectly sugared core. Taster number 3 liked it the best because the shell balanced with the ricotta the best. Comparatively Modern and Maria's shell had too much flavor (says taster 3). Great Cannoli. The final stop on my cannoli tour (seriously, I love these things, but I think I'd be okay if I waited a month or two before eating another one) was one that I admittedly had never heard of before beginning my tastings and only found through Yelp. After trying a cannolo here I'm not quite sure why they're such a well kept secret; their roll definitely rivals the best bakeries in the North End at a pretty great price. They don't have quite the variety of cannoli that the other bakeries have, but they make up for it in quality: a filled-to-order, crispy shelled roll with decadent ricotta. Admittedly, I still gotta give Maria's the championship title here, but Parziale's is definitely a worthy contender that is totally on par with Modern. They do make fresh bread which looks delicious and I hope to try sometime soon. There's no room to sit, but with the Greenway, Paul Revere square and Columbia Park all within walking distance, that's hardly a problem in the summer months. So, the absolutely final, completely definitive, undebatable, North End cannoli rankings: 1. Maria's 2/3. A tie! This is a true hidden gem in the North End. This is my type of place... you can keep Mike's and Bova's and give me the real deal with Parziale's. First off, when I order a Cannoli... I don't want some pastry that has been filled with Ricotta hours before making the yummy crispy pastry soggy. I want it pipped into the crust right before I eat it so I can enjoy every wonderful aspect of the treat. This is where Parziale's hits a home run... not only do they pipe in the filling fresh, but the filling is just so much tastier than the competition. In my own private cannoli off between Mike's, Bova's and Parziale's... Parziale's blew the competition out of the water. The selection might not be as big or as fancy as the other locations, but the food is consistent, affordable and amazing. The cookies are $$$$, the fresh bread... oh the fresh bread... I want to make a mattress out of it so I can smell that tasty aroma all the time. I have a weakness for hot blonds, sexy bodies and fresh Italian bread... not sure what order to place them in, but this makes me contemplate. Did I mention that they have Pizza as well? The food was well priced. Like most bakeries, it's available till it's gone. I really did want that Chocolate croissant. Please erase the board when you're out, so I won't even start the desire. We had the cannoli of course(North end, Italian village, duh). First mistake, sharing one. Best piece of advice I could give... "GET YOUR OWN!" no sharing She wanted some chocolate chip cookies, which were an odd green color. I don't know why. They were unexceptional. Tried a slice of lemon square. Thick lemon filling on a light, flaky crust. I felt like I got the better of the baker, because of so much filling. We also got a fruit pie, or turnover. Pie dough folded over filling. It was Black raspberry. Not my favorite, but apple seemed ordinary. The moment of truth... Inside is half filling, half air. The fruit was tasty, but just not my favorite. I have an aversion to seedy. The dough was flakey for a dry reason. Put filling next to it, instead of air, for needed moisture. Now keep in mind that we picked up this little white pastry box on our way to the airport. Flight attendant is passing out graham crackers, or pretzels, and I am in this box making "Mmmmm" groans. Love this place. Great sicilian pizza! Great bread and cookies! When I lived in the North End, I used to come here all the time for their dough. It's cheaper than Bova's (pound for pound) and very good. While they don't have the selection you'll get from the touristy spots (Mike's and Modern); they're very good at the small number of things they carry. Not to mention, the very polite counter staff (which I very seldomly got from Bova's) especially after 2am. But, then again, they probably weren't dealing with the best crowds at that time. The best cannoli in Boston (SCREW Mike's and the Modern, both of which really are also excellent), and one of the best cuts of pizza (cold, but so what?). Took the fiance here before she was the fiance, on a great little walking date through the North End and DTX. Service can be surly, but it's BOSTON, and I wouldn't change a thing. Very nice little North End bakery. I stopped in (on a Sunday, they were open!) for a slice of pizza and a cannoli. The slice of pizza was on par with other Italian bakery slices, that is to say, really damn good. I particularly liked the tomato sauce, and while I'm not a huge fan of the slightly spongy bread, I realize that this is the style of bakery-pizza. My friend took me here because I wanted some Cannolis. And they have the best cannolis that I have tasted thus far in Boston!! I was here on business and I've been to Mike's and Maria's that same week, and Parziale's is the best one of the 3! You can taste the freshness and it tasted like delicious. Mike's cannoli was big, and tasteless. There were no lines at Parziale's, so you get in, get out, and go eat! I think the cookies were just OK. I'm not a huge fan of italian cookies so don't take my word on it. I need more practice eating italian cookies. haha. I can't wait to go back to Parziale's this weekend to get myself a cannoli. I wish there was a Yelp rating described as "Yeah, about that..." Parziale's is one place I had only heard good things about - from the prices, to the pizza, to the pastries - hype on hype on hype. Unfortunately, this little bakery was pretty unimpressive. The service was brusque and unwelcoming, which would be fine if we were in Chinatown, but we're not. I need a little Italian spunk now and then, and the shopkeeper in Parziale's did not deliver. Yes, it's cheap, but that still doesn't mean it's worth it. The pizza was not memorable or tasty in any way, and I actually wouldn't willingly eat it again, even if I was drunk (okay, that's debatable... but they close early, so I'm off the hook.) The cookies were bland and mediocre, and I tasted not a hint love in the sampling I tried. This is my favorite bakery in the North End for bread. I've actually never tried their pastries or cannolis, although it looks like I should after reading the other reviews. I live nearby and made it my mission to find the best bread in the area (its a tough mission) and Parziale's has won as my favorite for fresh, tasty bread. I love their "sparkies", which are rolls for sandwiches or just eating...to be honest, I'm not sure what they're supposed to be used for, but I serve them with olive oil when guests are here or use them for the best sandwiches in the world. They're $.80 and you can have white or wheat (I'd recommend white). I just walk in, ask for a sparky, and plunk down my $.80. It's great. I've also had purchased Bastones for bruschetta, and they were also superb and I think $2.70 for a huge loaf. The woman behind the counter is usually very helpful if you need bread suggestions. Awesome bread here, just awesome. I moved up the street a while back and I come here when it is open for any Pan I need for the home. People, PLEASE DO NOT COME HERE FOR PIZZA. PLEASE! It is sold here for $1.50 for a reason. It's NOT a pizza place. It is a bread place. If you want Pizza, I can throw a rock and hit 4 places from this place's door step. Ernesto's, Regina, Pushcart, Locale all so close, just go there. Best items here are the breads, from small to large and everything in between. Away from the hype of Hanover St. This is a classic old time Italian Bakery. We had 2 cookies for .70. Are you kidding me, less than a dollar. Delicious and if I lived in the North End I would stop every day for their fresh bread. My Uncle Jimmy had a bakery like this in Roslindale although his was bigger it had the same feel. read more
