A friend and I were aimlessly driving down El Camino Real looking for a restaurant that was open on New Year's Day. We drove by and she suggested that we stop in for their buffet. Overall, the food was tasty and lunch was reasonable at ~$13/person. Plus, it was reassuring to see plenty of brown people eating there. I was somewhat bummed that naan wasn't available in the buffet line, but a basket of warm naan (both plain and garlic) was waiting for us when we returned to our table. This is the best Indian buffet I've gone to hands down! I have also ordered off the menu and was totally blown away with the insane mix of flavors. I will always miss the original Little Delhi on Jones in SF, but Passage to India has finally filled the void. **August 2010 UPDATE** I still love Passage To India, BUT the creators of Little Delhi are BACK!! They have a spot in SF called Curry Village on 9th between Judah and Irving! HUGE menu! More amazing than I remembered. Check it out! The buffet has such a huge selection of dishes both vegetarian and meaty. Usually 2-3 kinds of naan bread. The yellow curry potatoes and the black bean thing with the pancake are my favorite. (I apologize for not knowing the proper names of these dishes. The food is just so amazing that I forget what everything is called.) Or maybe the saag. Or the masala. Or the butter chicken. Or the tandori chicken. Mmmm! If you have friends like me who say "Ewww curry!" when you say Indian, let them know that there are a few Chinese dishes too like chow mein. Get them in the door and make them try one little piece of all the Indian stuff. They will see that it's not all curry and that curry is actually good! For dessert, my favorite is the mango ice cream (frozen yogurt?) topped with a big scoop of carrot pudding. Both are sensational on their own, but if you eat them together, WOW!! My eyes are rolling back into my head with ecstasy just thinking about it. For those "eww curry" people or kids, they also have tiny pieces of frosted cake, but it's thankfully not as sweet as American style cakes. Their chai is the best anywhere. They serve it unsweetened so you can add only the amount of sugar you want (or you can use artificial sweeteners YUCK.) You can also get the buffet to go. I did this once and they gave me fresh baked naan from the kitchen wrapped in foil so I didn't have to waste my precious box space with naan. I'm a sucker for a bottomless cup of chai, but having a whole box of amazing food for lunch and dinner was really awesome too. The service is wonderful. Everyone is very friendly and do their best at taking away dirty dishes or refilling your drinks. And it's always clean and nice with the cloth tablecloths and cloth napkins. I've had the buffet multiple times, and ordered off the menu once. Their Malai Kofta, as well as their butter chicken, is divine. The rest of the food is tasty, but nowhere near as good. Buffet's a bit overpriced, especially because it can take them a while to get food out to refill empty trays on the buffet. Service is pretty good. read more

Went here for dinner last night and couldn't make it out the door. We were stuffed with good food. My husband has never tried real Indian food other then Chick curry that we make at home. But he was so impressed with the lamb curry, cocounut fish curry (so yummy and similar to our island food we make). I was able to eat a lot of the veggie dishes that were so good ( iam not a vegetarian) Mang Lassi was theeee bomb. Loved it and wanted a bucket to take home. They have a wide variety of buffet items that I definitely haven't seen in many other Indian restaurants we go to (which would account for the steeper price point). Their naans are fantastic, they're flaky and soft and complement the rest of the dishes well. Just felt like a lot of sabzis tasted really similar and relied heavily on a similar set of spices, which made a lot of the food feel similar even thought there was a lot of variety. read more

Went here with my girlfriend after a long day moving from one place to another, so we were pretty hungry. I was pleasantly surprised to find a buffet on offer for dinner. Maybe biases my review... In addition to being hungry, the buffet was good to try a wide variety of options. Bread is a good example. Usually at an Indian restaurant I get some kind of naan, but there were at least four different kinds of bread, such as roti, dosa, and other types that I don't know by name. In general with the buffet, it seems they cover several different regions of Indian food that you don't always find elsewhere, e.g., with South Indian dosa masala. Two complaints about the buffet. First, since it's a buffet, there is no choice in spice level. They offer different kinds of hot sauces, but this is no substitute for a well-spiced curry. Second, since it's a buffet, I ate way too much. My fault, but the over-stuffed feeling brought down the overall quality of the meal. I'll have to go back and order dishes individually. Came here on the recommendation of a co-worker, who is from Mumbai. A lot of the clientele was either Indian or naturalized Indian, so that seems to say something. read more

I lived in the area for 4 years but not until beginning of the year I went to a lunch buffet with coworkers. I couldn't believe what I missed! They have a great selection of food - both vegetarian and meat-lover. They even served Dosa and Idli for buffet! So we got the taste of both north and south Indian food. All the dishes taste delicious... I wish I have 4 stomachs like cows to fit everything in. I almost couldn't move after the buffet! I went back again for a Sunday lunch buffet with my friend which is from southern region of India, and he loved it as well. And more of half of people in the restaurant are indians... it speaks of the food quality. It's a bit pricey... but I have no problem going back to them anytime. read more

Decided to order via Uber Eats this evening. Unfortunately when our food showed up both chicken Tiki masala and chicken korma (both $15 each) they came Without Rice. Thinking it might have been the Uber Eats fault I went ahead and double checked by calling Passage To India and NO for online orders they keep same price and don't give any rice with the orders. I myself have never heard of any Indian restaurant not providing rice with their curries. read more

You goto restaurant to have good food, well this is missing here. I ordered cauliflower Manchuria (with gravy) it was awe full, too much salt. Veg biryani is very ordinary and the billing time was more than 15mins. I went to this restaurant previously it was good then. I am not at all satisfied this time. I am very disappointed with this Zagat rated restaurant, which does not have even the basic sense of Indian dining, as well as customer experience. I ordered two orders of Biryani through Grubhub for pick up, each chicken biryani cost an insane $15.00 and they made sure the order would not go through if the Mandatory tip of 10% was not paid. Anyways I went along. When I went to the restaurant and picked my order, I inquired where the raitha along with the Biryani was, the old gentleman at the counter looked at me as if I was asking for another extra biryani, and he said you did not order it, end of matter. Came here for the special Bengali food buffet. Different than the regular buffet. I loved the tandoori chicken appetizer, it was moist and warm...better than the regular buffet. It's been a couple years since I last dined here for lunch. Disappointed that it's strictly a buffet now, but there were plenty of options including a vegetarian section. The one thing I was really looking forward to that I remembered from the past was the garlic naan, which used to be served fresh, hot and tender. No such thing now, in fact when we went to the buffet, a plate of naan was put on our table and when we asked for garlic naan we were gruffly told there were 2 pieces in there. I couldn't discern the difference and the naan was unrecognizable from what they used to serve as it was cold, tasteless and brittle. The buffet food was ok, but not as tasty as before. Been to the Mountain View location a few times. The food quality is pretty good. However it seems expensive. The variety is good and covers north and southern Indian cuisine. It would be good if they can cover Eastern Indian and Western Indian food too like Bengali and Maharashtrian and Gujarati Cuisine. The decor seems good but the lighting seems a bit dim and could be bit brighter. The buffet spread is decent and the a la carte menu food is well prepared. We went for dinner buffet on Saturday evening. Vegetarian selection is below average. Dirty ambience with webs on walls. They charged full $17 for my 9 year old even when I'd asked over phone how much was kids and they said 8.95. Apparently their definition of kids is less than 7 year. Not worth money. Really disappointing food. The food was stale and not flavorful. They focused on quantity and not quality. If you are looking for good Indian food, this is NOT the place to be. There are so many things wrong with the food. It was not flavorful at all. Now if you think about it, that is the whole point of eating Indian food. And no, I am not talking a out just plain old spicy. I am talking about flavor. Indian food is supposed to be a medley of flavors - not insipid. Please do yourself a favor and avoid this place. I get take out from here at least once a week, sometimes twice... they know me by name there now haha. They have great service, and the restaurant is very clean. The food is great and is always prepared quickly. They have a good selection of items and the prices aren't bad. All in all its a very good restaurant... if they would fix the following things it would be perfect. I gave them 4 out of 5 stars instead of 5 out of 5 for the following negatives. 1. The buffet never has anything spicy on it... regular spicy chicken curry should be a staple on the buffet. 2. The quality of the food isn't always consistent, most of the time it's perfect but sometimes it has too much parsley or too much ginger, or the ginger pieces aren't ground properly, or some other inconsistency. Make precise recipes for the cooks to follow please. 3. They do not have Chicken Badami on their menu, Chicken Badami is the Rolls Royce of chicken curry (PLEASE ADD IT!!) Its similar to chicken Korma but the chicken is first cooked in a tandoor oven and then added to the curry (so it is red on the outside) its also spicier than korma. 4. They always include a 1/2 order of rice with their curry dishes... this leads to confusion when ordering. Of course I want a full order of rice so I always have to order extra rice... sometimes I get the original 1/2 + and additional 1/2 order which is correct... but sometimes I get the original 1/2 order and an additional full order for a total of 1 1/2 orders of rice (which of course costs more and is too much rice). If they fix the above I would be happy to change my review to 5 out of 5 stars. read more

My wife and I went at about 7:30pm on a Thursday night. Ambiance: The ambiance is unique, almost a festive Mexican banquet theme (christmas lights hanging all around), but the building is a bit drab. Conversation levels were at a very nice level and tables nicely spaced apart. Staff: We asked our waiter for signature dishes and the waiter did not hesitate with answers (usually a good sign). He and all the servers were very friendly and helpful. Food: We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Chicken Korma. While both were delicious, they knocked it out of the park with the Korma. The Naan bread was light and fluffy and topped of a very good meal. The portions were quite large, and we had boxes to take home. We did not try dessert. read more

I like this lunch buffet quite a bit despite its flaws. There is a very nice assortment of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The food has a good level of spiciness, not tear-jerking, but not bland either. Some items can however be excessively salty. The service is at the low end of poor. It is awkward and inefficient to waste time being seated only to "touch go" and jump back up again to hit the buffet. Since it is rarely crowded they ought to say "grab your food and sit anywhere you'd like". The service has in the past ranged from surly to downright churlish, with a waiter once demanding a tip point-blank before I had even paid and gotten change (bizarre and inexcusable in any context, but made worse given that it's a buffet and service is almost nonexistent). The restrooms are filthy, the ambiance dingy, the music almost unbearable. I basically know exactly what to expect from this joint, but on the balance I think it is worth it so I keep going back. Maybe it's just my personality, but given that the food is mostly quite good, I'm willing to overlook and even enjoy its various off-putting quirks. If you're looking to have a good all-around dining experience, look elsewhere. If "all you can eat Indian food" is enough to make you happy, you will like the food I think. read more

Visited on 05/30/2016 for Vegetarian Buffet dinner. 1.Over time it became WORST. Do not even think of going there. 2.Gobi Curry, is full of turmeric and all other vegetables seems like 2-3 days old, there is no taste at all , its only name sake. 3.Cake/pastry Is good and that's the specialty other than everything is worst. 4.Restrooms are tiny and water leaking all over the floor.
