I've only eaten here a couple of times, but I remember driving by here for over 30 years now. It turns out, this place first opened all the way back in 1947. Their specialty is the Cornish, pasty, invented by Cornish miners, who wanted a little handheld lunch that they could take in their lunch buckets down to the mines. The pasties at this place, they are too big to hold in your hand now, but they are absolutely amazing. They have a good selection. I lucked out. I came just before 5 PM on a Saturday, just a few minutes before they closed. They only had a few cooked pasties left. I took Home a chicken pasty, and it was amazing. The potatoes were tender, the chicken was moist and flavorful, the veggies were just right, and the crust was beyond flaky. I also bought one of the Cornish pasties, the original, unbaked, and I later baked it in my air fryer. It came out just as good as if I would've done it in the oven, and it was just as good as the chicken one was. An East Sacramento staple! They have been opened since 1952 so they must be doing something right! Located deep into J street, in the heart of East Sac, Pasty Shack is a hole in the wall that can be easily missed unless you know what you're looking for. The pasty's come sweet or savory. I prefer the savory. My personal favorite is the Friday special, the chile verde pasty. This pasty comes stuffed with chunks of pork covered in chile verde sauce and refried beans. The flavors this pasty achieve crossover the best of English and Mexican cuisine. I was almost upset I had to share with my girlfriend. You can never go wrong with the Cornish pasty. It's stuffed with diced beef chunks, potatoes and onions. The seasonings hit every mark. We always are sure to order a large side of gravy. It's a little extra but worth it. Not that the pasty's are dry but who doesn't love gravy? We even had some leftover and made mashed potatoes the following day and used some lol. I've only ever had their food prepared never frozen but I wouldn't mind buying them frozen and preparing for a holiday treat, especially their apple turnovers. My dad raved about this place for years, like "back in my day these were the best." He hadn't been in a very long time so finally we surprised him by going and picking some up. I love how people thing of East Sac as being so hoighty-toighty, and then you can have the neighborhood joint like the Pasty Shack still there and in business for years serving quality food. Place is easy enough to find but you could miss it. There is a 3 seat patio table out front and there may have been a couple of seats inside. However, on an upper 80s day, it was blasted hot inside. They ran out of veggie pasty for my friend at 5:45 on a Friday. They close at 6:00. I ordered chicken pasty since it has a variety of veggies and mushrooms. Dough was good. There were a few pieces of chicken and I barely noticed the shrooms. While German, it's reminiscent of a chicken pot pie. Easy to eat with just a plastic fork. I finished it and was full. I'm eating more reasonable portions so if you like to stuff yourself, it may not fill you. I didn't like the aftertaste/burps. Was very stew tasting. I might return at some point to try the cornish. Seems like Bri'ish food places are hard to come by so I was curious enough to check this place out. What's a pasty, you ask? It's pretty much a pastry consisting of filling stuffed inside a shell made out of ingredients similar to those in pie crust. If you've read Harry Potter, this word should sound familiar (pumpkin pasties, anyone??). Pasties are typically handheld-sized (think of empanadas), but the ones here.....they're huge lol! They're almost the size of a football. Quite shareable for two unless you're super hungry. I got the Cornish pasty, which its filling includes lean beef and potatoes. Love the pie crust; very buttery and I'm a fan of pie crust having a slight chewy give to it. The beef was too lean for my liking as it was a bit dry and chewy. Gravy costs extra and I recommend getting it with this pasty to help with the beef. Also wasn't too fond of the potatoes still having skin (nit-picking but made the pasty a little less appetizing to eat). Definitely comfort food. There are other variations here, some exclusive to certain days. As I do really like the pastry shell here, I'm intrigued to try another type! read more

I was in the Sacramento area, and decided to see if this place was a still around as I use to come here when I attending Sac over 27 years ago. There wasn't Yelp back then. Surprisingly and excitingly I saw it was still there. So I stopped in as this was a nostalgic thing for me. I was raised by a British woman and so I try to get British food when I can as she is no longer, everyone agree mom food is the best. It's small place and looks exactly the same as it did when I use to frequent. The menu board the kind with the plastic letters. The prices have not remained the same :) So I ordered 4 for the road. 2 cornish, and 2 chicken. I was so excited to have these when I got home. They looked really good, but sadly after a few bites I found them to be extremely salty and I don't remember them this way. The cornish beef was a little tough and dry. The chicken was ok, but still salty. If you've never had a pasty they are quite filling, but I think the cooks needs to watch the salt. Cute little family owned shop. Simple menu with a rotating daily special. It's a small building with only a couple tables. Pasties are good to take as a to go order because they seal in the their own heat, and are easy to warm back up if they cool off. We came in just after opening on a Saturday and were the only customers. The pasties were fresh and hot, and we took a frozen one to go as well. The woman who helped us seemed a little frazzled, but she was nice and instructed us on how to bake the frozen pasty. We ordered a Cornish and a chicken. We had the Cornish which was steak, diced potatoes and onions, and the Corned Beef and Cabbage Pasty which was special for the holiday. Pasty was dry and not very flavorful. Nice tender meat and potatoes but lacked moisture. I think we should have gotten the gravy. The crust wasn't very good either. We bought two extra ones and the next night I took the insides out, added peas and carrots and made homemade gravy and put it in two large ramekins covered with puff pastry. This tiny East Sacramento hole-in-the-wall checks all the boxes for a place I love: locally owned, unique, different and delicious. My only regret is that it took me so long to pay them a visit. Authentic British food is not something I can say I eat often, if ever. The pasty, as I've learned, is a long British tradition. It's comfort food in every sense. Warm dough and a filling of meat, potatoes and vegetables that is hearty and satisfying. I went with the cornish, which includes beef, potatoes and spices. It's a delicious medley, but what really sets it off is that perfect buttery homemade crust it comes in. I could have eaten quite a few if carbs weren't my worry. Since it was my first visit, the gentleman gave me what I believe was beef gravy for free as a side and it helped moisten and enhance the flavor of each bite. The place is one of those true word-of-mouth kinds of joints. Talking to the owner and a patron, I could see that they rely on old fashioned recommendations and customer loyalty. Perspective...before you come here thinking you will get a lavish savory meat pie, you must first know and appreciate British food. Since the owner died last year, his wife has been keeping up with daily operations with the help of a family friend, John. John promptly greeted me and explained the 4 choices I had for the day. After some great conversation about just about everything, I settled for the Cornish Pasty. It had lightly seasoned, many would say bland (it's a British thing) lean beef with potatoes and onions. Since the beef was so lean it was a bit dry (it's a British thing) BUT they offer gravy at $0.50 for 2 ounces to help with the American palate (it's an American thing). Only two tables inside so don't expect to dine in. Two on street parking with more behind the building. Don't do this...I parked next door at the post office since their lot was empty but when I came out, there were cars waiting to get in. A small pasty on J next to the USPS and Rite Aid. Our attendant, John was really friendly and welcoming, with a splash of delightful sense of humor; very engaging. He patiently introduced the variety of pasty and his favor (Bavarian) and customer favs (Cornish and Bavarian). He recommended eating it with a side of gravy (another regular customer also recommended eating them w/gravy & that we "won't go wrong"). They were right, it was delicious; the gravy gave the pasty another level favor. My brother and I ordered the Chicken, Cornish and Bavarian. We split the Cornish and Bavarian pasties, they're a good large size and one is quiet filling. The Cornish may look dry when cut open but once eaten it's quite tender and juicy. Especially the diced potatoes that have absorb all the flavors and meat juices, creating a wonder savory combination with the meat and pasty shell. The Bavarian is more on the tangy savory side, eating with a splash of gravy mingled together so well that is heighten one's appetite. When my bro ate the Bavarian, he said, "I just could not stop eating, so I kept going and going until it's gone." 3 visits to Sacramento with intent to try Pasty Shack I finally made it last month and what I was hoping to be the discovery of a legit Pasty in California turned out to be a bit of a let down. Since I moved from England 4 and a Half years ago it has been my mission to find 1. An amazing Pasty 2. Equally as amazing Fish & Chips. Back to the hunt, I guess. I had high hopes going here because I had just received some horribly shocking news from U.C. Davis medical center in Sacramento. My wife and I entered, the place was acceptable sanitary wise, although I could see a lot of clutter behind the counter. The patrons who hadr been served were happily noshing away on their meals. I checked out the menu, and we both agreed on the chicken pasties. We told the young lady at the counter that we would be dining there but wanted our order wrapped to go. And there I believe is where it went off the rails. Instead of two chicken pasties, we got two very dried out Cornish pasties. Seeing as I had just been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, I was too in shock to point this out. Normally, I have no problem speaking up in a restaurant (I was a cook in fine dining for more than a few years), but frankly I was still in shock due to my recent diagnoses. I truly feal that's once the attendant heard "to go" she immediately used the opportunity to pass off some substandard product on two unsuspecting rubes. I am very blown away by how great the service is of this business and the quality of the food Now if you're new to eating Pasty , let me tell convince you that is is extremely delicious . Asking for gravy also is an added bonus . I made my delivery through post mates because grub hub wasn't doing delivery in my radius . I called in and told the the lady that I wanted gravy on the side , even though there wasn't an option for it through the app. She gladly put in a side of gravy . The food came in I just dug in . Pasty is good on its own , but let me tell you that adding their homemade gravy pumps the taste to a whole new dimension . I am very impressed and will definitely order again . Yes have been coming here for years, but the first time I thought to write a review. First off the owner is so nice. It's a small little establishment that is more of a walk-in, walk-up, order, then take home, which is perfect for the 2020 time of social distancing and limited dine-in options. I really do enjoy the pasties here. I tried their holiday turkey with mashed and stuffing pasty for the first time last week and I think it's one of my favorites. The mashed potato keeps the inside moist so much so that I wish mashed was in the Cornish pasty! Some of the reviews said it's not really like a traditional pasty. I really have nothing to compare it to, but I think it's a nice hearty meal that delicious. I will be putting in a preorder for the thanksgiving holiday pasty this year they are that good! There are a few pasties that are weekly specials and unfortunately you are able to order them on any given day. For example they have the Mexican pasty on Thursdays and the Chile Verde on Fridays. I really truly wanted to love the Pasty Shack. For those of you who know me, I have a love affair with pasties. My favorite spot of all time, and where I first fell in love with this traditional English/Welsh treat, is in Boston (shoutout to The Cornish Pasty Co.). So I have a fairly high standards when it comes to pasties. Unfortunately, those standards were nowhere near being met by the Pasty Shack. I came in for lunch on a Monday afternoon with my dad and left unsatisfied and underwhelmed. It's not that the pasty was inedible or anything of that sort, it just had several missteps along the way. To start, the pasties are premade and already cooked, and served from what I would call a "heat box". So my pasty was slightly warmer than room temperature. Second, the bottom of my pasty shell was burnt. And when I cut into my pasty it wasn't stuffed full of all of the ingredients but rather fairly hollow, which dried it out. Without the side of gravy to save it, the entire pasty would have been very dry and almost unbearable. The gravy brought the filling slightly back to life. Without any other true pasty competition in the Sacramento area, I can see how this place has managed to survive but I just expect so much more when I go get a pasty. read more
