It has changed a lot Since the onset of covid with a major remodel and menu change. The kitchen had a hard time keeping up with demand as it took 75 mins to get 2 dinner plates from the time we ordered. The wait staff was very nice and very apologetic. This is a steak lover's heaven. They have a variety of dishes from filet mignons to ribs. The menu is pricey but nearly everything on the menu is delicious. I had the side of brussel sprouts. Yummness. For my main dish I got the fish with mango salsa and some strange buttery berry sauce. The berry sauce, in my opinion, was tooooooo buttery and took away from the dish. They plop it right on top after cooking, so it may be better had on the side. There is a cute fried lemon with the mango salsa above. Both aspects were delicious. The fish was tender and well cooked, but they could have removed the scaly bottom prior to serving. My main dish came with a side of sweet potato fries and those were mmmmm as well! They weren't too soft nor overcooked. Just right! They have a huge wine list, we had a red. Don't recall which, but I'm sure many of them are good. There's also a bar with stool seating which packed up quickly off to the opposite side of the dining area. If you get the center of the dining area you can watch them cut, and grill the meats. The ambiance is dark yet visible. The service is superb. Not a whole lot of dilly-dallying. The bread is warm and you get a choice of white or wheat loaves. They provide you with a small stick of butter too. Fresh and good. Happy eats! read more

Came on a Thursday during the busy season here on the Cape. I expected to wait a little bit, and the hostess told me 45 minutes. OK, fair enough ended up getting some speciality crafted cocktails from the bar. 45 minutes goes by and I head to the hostess stand to see where we stand in line and she tells us that it will be an hour and a half longer. I said that she told me initially 45 minutes and she said no, I told you one and a half hours. What kind of person lies to try and get more business in an establishment? I admit, I do miss the old Pate's the new interior lacks the character of the old BUT the food here is outstanding! I have eaten here many times and each is better than the last. Everything is out of this world. The staff is friendly and the service is excellent. Even if you are not staying in Chatham this place is worth the trip. Very lively bar. read more

This is a place that makes me feel like I am home sweet home. Food is home style and waitstaff speaks 'friendly', not standard young professional waiter-speak. We had a party of 8, and we were seated pretty quickly despite it being somewhat busy. Our service was pretty good, but the food left a lot to be desired. The baked haddock was overcooked and not fresh. Adding lemon juice pepper and tartar sauce did not do anything to help the flavor. The teriyaki chicken was good. The prime rib was just OK. Loved this place. It doesn't look like much from the outside but cute and lively on the inside. The service was very friendly but a little slower than we prefer, but it was ok because we were on vacation. Food was very good. My husband researched and found this place and we all liked it. We started with some apps to share and the duck tacos were out of this world. I don't normally even like duck. But my husband, son and I thought they were amazing. We also got the ribs for an app and that was good also, but not our favorite. The crab cake was well, just a crab cake. Nothing to write home about and it needed more remoulade sauce or something to jazz it up. Lots of crab though, not heavily breaded. For entrees my son had the 8 oz filet which he said was awesome and they perfectly cooked it - he doesn't like it too rare. My husband and I shared the shrimp scampi and the Halibut special they had. Both were excellent. For dessert it was the flourless chocolate cake - not a crumb left! And the coconut banana cream pie in a jar. Heavenly! He is beyond excellent in his ability to match wine with food and to make suggestions based on our criteria. Really love coming to Pate's for dinner every summer as I did when i was a little girl. Tonight for the first time I tried "take away" instead of dining in. After finally getting acknowledged I then had to wait while the bartender serve a man that came in after me with his take out order & a quick cocktail for the road! I finally said may I pay for my order (sitting in front of me this whole time getting cold)& still she didn't ring me in?! Finally I said I needed to go & could not wait for bread & butter! I paid & left hoping after all that my meal would be worth it! Well the prime rib was delicious & amazing! French fries were meh nothing special I wish I had ordered the bake potato! Unfortunately my salad that I ordered with no onions & house dressing was NOT in my to go bag but I was charged!! Oh well only dine in from now on! read more

Overall delicious (although a bit over priced - NYC status food $ wise). Upper management ownership needs training on how to run a $40+ entree restaurant. Woman owner came out upon our complaint about being brought the wrong meal and said "but did you eat it though?". That blunt classless statement would never be asked in a nice restaurant. Common curtesy is when a complaint is brought up and the bill is $500+ you can comp one meal. Nice restaurants in Boston and NYC would do that in a heartbeat. If someone is complaining that much that the owner has to come out and say sorry yet no compensation...step up. Woman part owner very rude, blunt, and waiter argumentative. Rule of owning a restaurant is customer is always right. Treatment of service at the end has entire family saying won't recommend to others. Huge stink for one $40 meal and no apology. read more

First time here and we will be back! Six adults who enjoy a great meal and Pates did not disappoint. Even with staff shortages and COVID, our waitress Kim and the other waitstaff were incredibly attentive and efficient. The presentation did each course was photo worthy, and the food tasted as good as it looked. Appetizers were amazing; lobster tacos had a nice surprising "kick", we loved the roasted shrimp and the crab cake was among the best we've ever tasted. Our meals were just as good - scallops, surf n turf, cod and the seafood pan. Yum! Please save room for dessert. All 4 choices were outstanding - banana coconut cream in a jar was tops. So grateful to the new owners who envisioned a coastal modern vibe with upscale dining, but a huge shout out to the waitstaff who are working so hard these days. read more

4.5 Stars. I won't lie, this place could use a makeover, if only just getting rid of the musty old carpet and any other legacy of indoor cigarette smoking and spilled drinks. Walking into this place is like a time-warp; it reminds me of a place my grandfather might have gone: a shirt and tie bartender making classic drinks, an experienced host, a dark atmosphere; he would have ordered a rare prime rib, a 7&7 and capped it with a cigarette. I rather liked this atmosphere, but I know it's not most folks' taste. Given that it hadn't updated...ever, and a largely empty dining room (probably because it's massive), I didn't know what to expect. But I started to perk up when I saw an open grill right out in the dining room with white-clad chefs and GORGEOUS looking cuts of meat. The host was friendly and our server was excellent, unlike many of his fellow apathetic teen/twenties employees in other Chatham food establishments. Now to business: the food was fabulous. I ordered scallops, my mother swordfish, and my father a lobster dish of some sort, and they were all excellent. We also were gawking at other tables' beautiful prime ribs and cuts of steak; there is clearly pride in quality and preparation here. Do not expect bright, fresh, airy here, but take a trip back, and come for the FOOD; I know I'll go back when I can. read more

We went Friday August 21, which happened to be their first night after recently being renovated and under new managnent. We were prepared for opening night jitters but instead were treated to one of the best dining experiences in quite a while. The new decor is bright and sophisticated. The service was flawless. The management was very friendly and attentive. The menu is eclectic ensuring that everyone in our party had olenty of options. We ordered a a bunch of appetizers and they were fantastic, the peking duck tacos were a standout. The tuna and prime rib entree were amazing. One of our party got the burger and proclaimed it to be one of the best on the cape. There was also great energy in the dining room. We will definitely be coming back. read more

We went on a recommendation for great food. That did not disappoint. We had 3 in our party, and all had excellent meals (sea bass, tuna, surf and turf). Service was good. Unfortunately (for us who are amongst the concerned during Delta surge) there is zero Covid awareness or precautions. Tables are close together, no staff was masked. This restaurant is definitely an anomaly. Dining here is like going through a time warp in terms of the decor so if you're looking for a cutting edge/stylin' restaurant then look elsewhere. Everything about the place is retro and I don't think it's intentional (i.e. they purposely did a theme), I think it's just one of those rare restaurants that just never changed and people liked it that way. Eating here brought back memories of being taken out to eat as a child by my parents in the mid 70's. Think dimly lit, leather trim on wood chairs, jagged pineapple style candle holders on tables, etc. Either you'll like it or you'll hate it. I liked it. My wife and I both got the clam chowder and we both thought it was excellent. My wife commented that it was way better than the chowder she had just a few days prior at the Wellfleet Oyster festival. For our main meals we got broiled haddock and a catch of the day which consisted of scallops, shrimp and lobster mixed with squash, zuccini and grape tomatoes. My wife said that her haddock was cooked perfectly and was tasty, flaky and juicy. My catch of the day special was very good with the exception being that the lobster meat was definitely overcooked, it was slightly tough/rubbery, compared to the shrimp and scallops. I still enjoyed the dish though. We shared a chocolate lava cake that came with a couple scoops of ice cream for dessert. It wasn't the best chocolate lava cake I've ever had, but it was tasty and a good end to the meal. Our server was fantastic. She was super-pleasant and incredibly, but not overly, attentive. I would say that the food here is above average overall. This place is an unpretentious little retro-gem that could easily be missed amidst the cookie-cutter clones of the restaurant world. If you're looking to do the timewarp or just have a little fun dining in a restaurant reminiscent of days long gone by then this is the place to do it. read more

My parents and I have been visting Pates for special dinners for years and years (about 20 now, yikes). We have always loved this place and usually go at least once or twice per visit to Chatham. It is a true steakhouse. Sure, you might not be getting a dish that you'd find in some trendy city joint, but it is so fun because it is a traditional American steakhouse. We always get caesar salads and filet with a baked stuffed potato. I always like the teriyaki steak--it is not traditional teriyaki flavored but it is scrumptious. Also- brussel sprouts with hollandaise sauce, yes please. OK, so some of the clientele might be old but that doesn't mean anything bad at all! There are people of all ages here- lots of people bring kids also. Visit Pates. Get key lime pie for dessert. read more

Not Yo MaMa's Pates! We had not ventured into the new Pates - if you have not been you must go! We had Roasted Swordfish and Seafood Pan Roast both amazing! Swordfish was cooked perfectly and the pineapple salsa & Orange honey soy butter which enhanced the flavor. The Seafood Pan Roast had an amazingly light sauce with huge chunks of lobster, amazing scallops & perfectly cook shrimp with the tail removed - thank you very much I hate fighting with the tails! But best of all was our waitperson, Ishmael, he is the most professional waitperson we have encountered all season! We will be back! read more

This place kept making me repeat to myself the phrase 'the land that time forgot'. It's an absolute time warp of a joint, and almost totally out of place on Cape Cod, but I think that's part of the charm. It's dark oaken wood offset with red naugahyde benches are totally from the 50's. They hang a discordant melange of decoratives, including ox yokes and harpoons. It's a total trip. The food is essentially classic steakhouse fare with a Cape Cod twist of seafood dishes, but those too are done in classic steakhouse style. I had a really tasty and HUGE slice of prime rib, after some calms casino which were pretty forgettable. The meat was really good though - tender, red & juicy. The service was curt but gracious, and the clientele was a typical mix of Chatham retirees, trending from old to older for the most part. It's good for a steak and a laugh in here. read more

Welcome to Pate's, the restaurant that time forgot. I went here as part of a dinner engagement with an elderly couple my partner and I adore, on their request. I wasn't terribly surprised to find out that the place is right in the old-timer wheelhouse: pleasant (but ancient) decor, dim lighting, and a doting host that treated us like royalty. The old-fashioned touch was actually quite charming, really. This place is apparently mobbed if you try to get a table during peak senior eating hours. Sadly, the food can't carry its share of the bargain. The teriyaki chicken I ordered was astonishingly bland, and my partner's scallops were deemed 'chewy' and 'blah.' (We kept these views to ourselves until later, of course, to not offend our wonderful guests.) Even the complimentary bread was poor, and that's nearly impossible to mess up. Our guests barely touched their meals, but that's just how they roll. I've heard good things about their steaks, so those might have received a heartier endorsement. In all honesty, Pate's is essentially a dressed-up Red Lobster where you're paying three times the price for dated ambiance and illusion of elegance. Lord knows I'll probably be hovering around a place like this when I'm north of 70, but for now, I can't possibly recommend spending $30-$40 a head (or more) on mediocre cuisine. Been here twice. Last night was my second visit. First time my meal was fantastic. My NY Sirloin was cooked to perfection. Everyone at our table was impressed with their meals. Last night I ordered the Surf and Turf. My Top Sirloin was a bit over cooked. I debated on sending it back, but for the price of $23.95, I thought I would. I kept the shrimp to eat while the waiter took the sirloin back to the kitchen. Within minutes I received an order of three coctail shrimp with apologies from the kitchen. I received a perfectly cooked filet minon along with 2 more baked stuffed shrimp. The service is exceptional, and the food is absolutely delicious. My ten year old son ordered off the children's menu. Top Sirloin with twice baked potato and carrots. He received a large steak cooked perfectly. He cleaned his plate and asked how they can cook steak so perfectly there (he is not one to clean his plate normally). He said it melted in his mouth like butter. This is my favorite place in Chatham for dinner. Great service and the most delicious baked haddock of your life. Pates recently reopened after new ownership and a renovation. We got takeout. The order process was very good online. The pick up process seemed great at first. Although the person who brought the food to our car read off the receipt to us, the bags did not include 2 of the 6 items ordered, which we learned when we got home. When we called and then returned for the food it was waiting for us. Unfortunately, so was the partial order waiting and getting cold at home. Really soured the whole concept for us. Frustrating. The lobster tacos (3) should be identified as "mini" on the menu. Tiny! The shells were prepacked and tasted like stale crackers. The taco filling was so small in quantity it was difficult to recognize much flavor. A major disappointment for $19!!! The menu photo is quite deceiving. The seafood special dinner was alright. We expected much better. The burger was pretty good. Fries are shoestring type and do not hold much flavor. Wedge salad was standard except it was smothered in tiny fried onions which was too much. Would have been best left as a traditional wedge salad. In summary, we will chalk up our disappointment to the newness of the place and the need to iron out a lot of wrinkles. We'll give Pates a chance to get better before we go back. Please Pates, improve your lobster tacos!! read more

I should have known this was going to be a sub-par experience when an elderly couple almost T'd our car as they were pulling out of the lot and onto the main road... Of course the decor is old, the lighting has a pink hue (why??) and not a single local was to be found dining in (other than the host who was MIA for 5 minutes). We should have turned around and walked out right then but those misleading 4 and 5 star reviews made us think that at the very least the food would be good. Our waitress was nice (thus concluding the complement section of this review). The menu and specials looked normal except for the fact that the meal only comes with a starch option or veggies, not both. Okay so my husband got clam chowder and I got lobster bisque. Clam chowder was just meh, lobster bisque tasted fresh and had large lumps of meat. My husband ordered the fried seafood platter for his main meal but barely touched it. The scallops were chewy and the breading was funny tasting. I had the baked scallops which were, surprise, chewy and came out swimming in butter and juices. The assorted veggies were previously frozen as was the twice baked potato. I live in western CT and can get fresher, better tasting, cheaper seafood. If you are looking for a special meal out while on vacation then I suggest you eat elsewhere. read more

From the fresh baked bread with butter to the prime rib, steaks and chops always cooked to perfection to right off the boat fresh seafood there is truly something at Pate's for everyone! They even have an extensive children's menu and parents with toddlers will love the wikki sticks they give the kids once you're seated. Great way to keep the little ones entertained! Lastly, you know you have a winner when you're asked by your leaders' leader to share with her your favorite restaurant and it just so happens to be Pate's. Once we kick Covid-19 to the curb and things are back to normal my travel schedule will resume.
