Very happy with our choice in Pate's for our Anniversary. We went on a Monday night and had a great evening. The decor is nice. Old, but nice. It was very comfortable to be there. The food is done right. I can't express that enough. There were no out of control flavorings or going over the top...everything was just done really well. We ordered drinks to start, beer and wine. The service was fast and our waitress Sue was spectacular. Funny, fast and very attentive. She didn't hover over us, but was there the second we needed anything. To start, we had oysters on the half shell. Delicious. The cocktail sauce that went with them could have used a little more spice for my tastes, but it was the way my wife liked it. C'est la gare. Overall, fresh, delicious oysters. Next we had salads. I had the house with blue cheese (homemade, very good) and my wife had the caesar salad. It came with bacon on top which I though was an excellent substitution for anchovies. It took me back a bit when it came out, but it was good as well. For Entrees we had the Prime Rib and Lamb Chops. The prime rib was out of site. The lamb chops were done perfectly. I would have like to see them accented with a nice sauce, but they were cooked perfectly. The portions for dinner were monstrous and provided a nice lunch the next day. Desert was a slice of their cheesecake and two "International" coffees. The coffees were very good and the cheesecake met expectations. I prefer a creamier cheesecake, but this one was fine. We will be returning. read more

As a summer vacation restaurant Pates just doesn't stand up to the competition in Chatham. The decor is dim and quite outdated. The food is good enough and the size of the place is good for larger groups. I ate the clam chowder and shrimp scampi. Both were good but you can find much better versions at different restaurants on the Cape. read more

Love the new decor. The food was amazing! I have been twice and both times it was great. Kym our server was delightful. First time I had the shrimp wrapped prosciutto, lobster tacos and a yummy pistachio martini for dessert. The second time I did the 3 for $33. Started with the clams in miso broth with chorizo, seared tuna on a yummy rice bed for my entree and pumpkin bread pudding. So much food! It didn't help that we shared the salad special and duck tacos first either. Everyone was very happy with the food and the service. read more

So I took family and friends from the west coast out last night for a great dinner before they left. We went to Pate's because they offer a Baked Stuffed Lobster. We were greeted by a bra less waitress who smelled of stale cigarettes. She took our order and then returned a short time later asking is we had reserved the lobsters. We said no and she said well then we are out, we only had two lobsters and they have been reserved. Who reserves lobsters? You would think the waitress would inform us ahead of time that they are out of lobsters. Anyway I am not going back to Pates since you need to reserve your food order ahead of time. read more

Saw on line that the newly refurbished bar at Pates Chatham was open. My husband and I were excited about visiting, and as Chatham residents really want to support our local businesses. We were greeted at the front door by a hostess who told us they don't accept reservations for the bar and it is first come first serve. She escorted us back and we were delighted to find 4 unoccupied seats socially distanced and surrounded by plexiglass. After being ignored for several minutes by the 3 people behind the bar, we were finally able to get their attention and asked them for a cocktail menu. The bartender, Jaime, informed us that the seats we were sitting in were reserved and we could not sit there. We told him that the hostess told us that it was first come and reservations were not taken for the bar. Jaime insisted that the seats were reserved for friends of the owner, and that he was one of the owners. He went on to tell us what a bad day he had (the bar top was not yet installed, he had to borrow bar stools from another restaurant, cable was not yet set up), and again we could not sit there because the seats were reserved. After waiting several minutes Jaime found 2 bar stools and eventually set us up on the rail outside the bar. Since we were already there we had 2 drinks. While paying our bill Jaime informed us that next time we visit our first round will be on him. After the customer service we experienced it's hard to believe we will be back. We are locals who supported Pates over the last few months with take out, have enjoyed their food, and so much wanted to like dining there. It is not a good image that friends of the bartender are given preferential treatment. In this difficult time when restaurants are trying to survive, and people are starting to dine out again, it's a shame that the customer is not appreciated at Pates because you are not part of the click or that the rules you are told at the door do not apply to you. read more

We usually go to Pates once or twice a year as the food is always pretty good, but this time since new ownership...Watchout other restaurants!! Pates is doing an amazing job with their food and the restaurant redecor is beautiful...Congratulations new owners and keep up the great work!! Last night was our initial dinner at Pates making Father's Day a real treat. Dinner was delicious from cocktails through dessert. The salad special hit all the right notes for freshness, taste and texture. My husband's sword fish and my tuna were seasoned and cooked to perfection. The peanut butter/chocolate dessert, a perfect ending. The wait staff was timely and delightfully paying attention to keeping our water glasses filled, not always the case elsewhere. Had an awful experience here yesterday. I asked the waitress what was in the Seafood roast and she told me it was scallops and lobster. A huge pasta dish came out and I can't eat gluten. There were probably 3 pieces of the smallest portion of lobster you can imagine and shrimp. I asked to remake it with gluten free and she quickly brought out another dish that 1) was still not gluten free pasta and 2) was not even cooked. The dish was $38 and was not comped and the shrimp tasted... bad. I come from the industry myself and have never been the person to write a review, but this was just too terrible. There was no trying to fix it on their end either and we paid a $200 to have to eat somewhere else after. read more

The appetizers were OK didn't like getting the appetizer and salad at the same time, with the prices they have you shouldn't have to feel rushed( place was not that busy)and even if was they are charging top dollar , plus never told the specials , We both ordered a prime rib medium rare and it came out med well as well as it tasted as it was not fresh cooked that day Veggies and rib lukewarm Was not impressed with the wine list there was no roses by the bottle, come on roses are the hottest wine going right now. read more

The older male host is miserable - one of the least friendly or helpful people I've experienced in the restaurant industry. He should denot be in 'service'. My family of 5 adults ate dinner at the newly re-opened and renovated Pate's in Chatham last night. Everything about the evening was fantastic! We were seated within minutes of our reservation in the new, bright, open restaurant. Our server greeted us immediately with drink and food menus. We all enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail. Particularly delicious was the Ruby Red Kiss martini! As a table we shared a dozen super-fresh and delicious oysters, the grilled artichoke hearts which were tender and so flavorful and the tuna tartare. Our entrees ranged from a grilled NY steak to swordfish to sea bass and prime rib. Everyone raved about their dish! I am so happy to have a new, fantastic restaurant here in Chatham and look forward to many visits to Pate's! read more

In sum -they may be in over their head over there. I married into a 3 generation family who cherished Pates and genuinely appreciated the fact new owners were willing to preserve the namesake. Perhaps they should have have let it go. Our first visit there was fine, but our 8/26 visit was far from it- which was quite unfortunate. To begin with both drink menu's and bread were commodities. Revenue was lost there, but not my concern past my thirst. Appetizers were served spot-on time. However, the clam chowder was returnable (although my family would not allow me to return the third thing in my life) and the most accurate summary from our table was "...you wouldn't have to be Jesus to walk across this chowder." The kitchen was back logged over an hour from order to service, and the bread remained scarce as a winged unicorn. One would think there would be some sort of concession. From there my $42 Chilean Seabass (a meal like enough to have served at my wedding) was as charred on the outside, as it was dry on the inside. I would give it a 6.3 overall. To be clear, service was great, and there is nothing negative there. Yes, it an Cape restaurant in August- but everyone needs to know their limitations. Reassess your ability. read more

My family and I just had our first dinner here since the new ownership and renovation and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Have dined here for the past 15 years and can only say its the greatest in the Chatham area. Where else can you go for a 2# lobster thats on the menu every day and doesn't clean out your wallet? My only complaint is that I live in New Jersey and can't enjoy it more often. read more

You get what you get... Pates is consistent. Really good steaks cooked on an open hearth, and twice baked potatoes have been served the same way for at least the past 35 years. The homemade bread is addicting and the Croques St. Jacques is nice and tangy - just right. The onions in the onion soup if caramelized properly form the base of some amazing onion soup - delicious (but they are often not, which can render the broth quite bland). That said it's a solid steak house with some seafood offerings which are equally solidly and consistently produced. read more

8 of us went to dinner here last night. I was the only person that had never been here. It is considered a staple of the Chatham food scene. I do enjoy a prime rib. My party told me that Pates is known for their prime rib. I was given a short tour of the line, where the chef behind the line showed me the cut of meat. It was on the bone, which made it very tasty. Review from Gen X'er city dweller (Nyc,Chicago, London). Don't come here if you want sterile, trendy, white decor, farm to table ambience/food. BUT this place is fantastic for transporting you back to a simpler time. The food is outstanding comfort food circa 1975 (prime rib to die for). Steaks, seafood, baked potato, perhaps add a veg soaked in a heavy sauce. Clientele is primarily 65+ locals, sweet and friendly as can be. The owner cooks behind the grill while his daughter serves up great drinks and a surprisingly decent wine list at the bar. While the decor has literally not changed in 40 years, the place is spic n span :). 7 foot ceilings, Dark wood paneling, heavy wood bar, dark brick fireplace, minimal windows. If you can embrace and appreciate "old cape cod" while also appreciating great quality food served the way grandma made it, you will have a fantastic experience. Had dinner for 4 Friday night and have to say, it was excellent. The hostesses were very friendly and welcoming. Our server, Ellen was so personable and timed everything perfectly. The drinks were made well, not too strong, not too weak, just right. The food was phenomenal. Had the Wedge Salad and the lettuce was very crisp and refreshing. Our friends had the Lamb Lollipops and when they mentioned to our server that only 3 came instead of 4, she went right to the kitchen and brought them 2 more, even though they told her not to worry. Our entrees varied from surf/turf and swordfish to pizza and fancy fish & chips. Presentation was beautiful. The desserts were equally amazing. We never felt rushed with our meals even though the restaurant was very busy. In fact, were told just to enjoy the experience and relax - exactly what you want to hear! All in all, great meal, great company and we'll certainly make the trip again. A new favorite!! read more

I don't think Pate's has changed much since the 1950's-which is a great thing. Some reviewers complain that it's too dark, no ambiance, but think of it as a throwback to mid-century steak and seafood restaurants. Except it's not a throwback since it has never been any different! It's easy to imagine Don Draper or Roger Sterling sucking back oysters and martinis in a corner booth. (On vacation, of course.) My grandparents used to come to the bar here in the 60's for a night out and rumor has it my grandma would have a few too many Manhattans. So it's that kind of place. Solid if not amazing steaks and seafood, menu might seem dated to some but I think it's totally charming. Perhaps this holds less appeal if it's not part of your family lore or you haven't been coming here for your whole life, but I think it's amazing that Pate's remained untouched and I hope it never changes! read more

Top notch steaks, seafood, baked stuffed lobster and the best steak terriyaki in the world!!! Clams casino are tasty too!
