I parked my car in a reserved spot while I was waiting for someone to come out of a building, moving some stuff, and made the mistake of getting out of it and standing a couple feet away. I am from out of town and I drove in to Somerville to visit for the day. On Saturday evening (5/12), I briefly parked at Market Basket to run across the street to pick up a pizza. Though MB was closed there were other cars in the lot, yet when I came back out there was a driver hooking up MY vehicle. When confronted he demanded $100 to drop the car - cash only, no exceptions. He said it would cost me $178 if he towed it to their lot, so this was my "best option". I only had $40 cash on hand, but he conveniently knew the exact locations of all nearby ATM's. This was a red-flag to me since it was quite apparent they stake out this private lot and frequently tow people who inadvertently park there after-hours. As I was walking to get cash from the ATM I called the # on the side of his truck and spoke with someone named Sean, who told me that if I payed the driver $54 (their standard fee) he would drop my car - quite a different story. Clearly the driver was making a sleazy attempt at extortion and collecting an extra $46 for himself. I ended up paying him $60 in total since he had no small change, and he played dumb the whole time saying that his boss was "doing me a favor". Yeah sure, nice try. I can understand if a parking rule was disobeyed and a fee must be paid, but this behavior is completely unacceptable. Even after getting caught in a lie I was still expected to pay this clown. They don't answer their phone. If the police tell you Pat's has your car, you can also use Pat's online system to look up your vehicle by license plate and verify that they do have it before you waste a trip, and then just go down there. It's not clear from their website, but they have someone onsite 24/7, so just go and get your car asap, whether or not they answer your call or return your messages. If you do it same day you only pay the tow fee, currently $90, which is a lot of money, yes, but fairly reasonable as far as these things go. Another review has very detailed directions on how to get there, which I found quite helpful. It is a short walk from Inman - just cut through on the side streets East of Windsor until you get to Medford St., which will take you under the tracks, and then when you are across from the CW Price/ Target shopping center, turn a hard right down the little access-road-like street (called Somerville Ave ext. in Google Maps) that is off to the side of the McGrath S on-ramp, keep walking past the glass place and you'll see the lot and the sign for Pat's, and finally the entrance to the office. The lone attendant was polite and apologized for not being able to get to the phone or return my messages. I could see that he was answering calls frantically while I was there - he said that some police officers had been there for a period of time and I guess that disrupted his workflow substantially. Anyway, you don't need to call them if you can verify in the online system that they have your car. They DO take credit cards. That seems to be a change from prior reviews. And in defense of myself for getting towed - I street park my car near my son's daycare and take public transportation from there early in the morning before the weird little warning car comes by. It's the 2nd week of July and we just came out of a holiday weekend. I'm in a mad rush because the little dude's diaper leaked overnight and he needed a morning bath. How the fuck am I supposed to remember that the Monday of the 2nd week of July actually happens to be the 1st Monday of the month? So that evening I'm carrying my son down the street, wondering where my car is, with the stroller and the diaper bag in the trunk. Yes, my mistake, but god I fucking hate them! read more

Everyone hates tow companies, because even though they answer the phone with "Thank you for choosing Pat's," odds are that you didn't. Still, there are some tow companies out there that don't suck. Pat's is not one of them. A litany of complaints: - The first time I came in, they told me I had to go to the police department to get a yellow slip from them. Why didn't they tell me that when I called earlier to see if they had the car? Also, the woman I spoke with didn't know where the police department was. She pointed which direction she thought I should walk and told me to ask someone. - When I came back with the yellow slip, the total came to $200, and they only take cash. They have an ATM on-site that only allows you to withdraw $100. Really, Pat's? - After finding a useful ATM at the nearby Target, I returned to Pat's for the third time. Like many other reviewers have noted, they told me the car was "out there in the lot" and sent me on my way. It's a large lot. - When they towed the car, they ripped something underneath the hood and now there's a leak in the coolant. I hate Pat's, and you should too. read more

Let me set up the scene... When I was living in Central Square, my street was the starting point for street cleaning, the bi-weekly Tuesday Morning Ground Zero.. Cars were ticketed by 8AM, sometimes as early as 7:30AM. The tow trucks would line up at the end of my street by 8:30AM, ready to tow any sucker who didn't hear the siren call of the DPW: Street cleaning, all cars will be tagged and towed. My apartment was set back from the street, behind another large house, and my bedroom was at the back of the apartment. Thus, I never heard the damn warning. Usually it didn't matter. I was vigilant about moving my car the night before street cleaning but one day, I was stressed out about a very big presentation and completely forgot. That morning I went about my business, getting ready for work, making sure I had notes on the presentation and my seminar was backed up on a disc. And then I remembered. Street cleaning. It was 9AM so out to the street I ran, hoping they would tow just a minute later than usual. But no, my car was already gone. I went to work, rocked my seminar (thankyouverymuch), called the city parking office and was directed to Pat's Towing. This brings us to the actual review. At the time, I knew little about Somerville, especially the vast commercial wasteland that is the McGrath Highway. When I requested directions to Pat's I was gruffly told 'We're at 160 McGrath.' When I asked where on the McGrath I was told '160 McGrath.' Okay, but where is 160 McGrath? Are there any landmarks? 'We're at 160 McGrath.' Um. Great. So I left work early and pretty much started walking. And walking. And walking. Turns out, the McGrath crosses the Cambridge/Somerville line without any notification (that I could see) so the street address is completely useless. I called Pat's again and was again told 'We're at 160 McGrath.' Well, 160 McGrath, in case you're wondering, is sort of underneath a bridge on the McGrath, near Target, AJ Wright, and about a hundred other landmarks. So, to add to the frustration of getting towed on an already stressful day, the folks at Pat's were less than helpful. Once there, I emptied my bank account of all available cash, paid the jerks and was told to find my own car in the ginormous tow lot. Gee, thanks for your help. Enjoy spending my money. I am not much for conspiracy theory but I have no doubt that towing companies are in league with local police departments. I was parked on the street in Cambridge where I park almost every day and I completely forgot that it was street cleaning the next day. Usually I remember, but I admit that it was my mistake. Had I not gone to my car and had it towed away to the yard, it would have been fully deserved. However, I did go to my car at about 8:20 in the am, and realized it was tow day. Well...my car was already ticketed by the policewoman (that was still there) and was already hoisted up on the tow truck. However, the guy had not even started moving and had not even gotten into his car. He was still attaching the final chain when I ran over there. I told him that it was my car and I am going to move it as soon as he releases it from the tow truck and the street can be cleaned without my dumb ass being in the way. Well...the guy said $40 cash. I was trapped. I could pay the guy $40 in cash or have it towed, be late for work and pay $90 to the yard. I figured better let the driver pocket it than the boss. He was even nice enough to drive me to the ATM. However, the police officer was parked right behind him and did not think to tell him to leave my car alone. No. The real goal is not to get the street cleaned (it was raining anyway!). The real goal is to share money among the city and the towing companies. Of course this is my perspective, and, yes, I did park illegally. I don't fault Pats for towing my car, the cops told them to. However, if they are going to damage my car in the process they could have owned that at the time (the spilling transmission fluid could have been a clue). The ensuing phone conversations included (from their end) cursing, false phone numbers to call and threats of physical violence (I do not kid). I ended up eating the $3k to fix my ride rather than pursue the matter with these people, that is how unpleasant they were. Thought I'd chime in here and add my story. A friend of mine parked his car at the Twin City Plaza.The posted sign states a person cannot park there for more than 4 hours and that if the person walks off the premises, the car will be towed, and it states Pat's Towing is the tow service. He parked his car there at 8 am and went back to his car at 11:30 and it was gone. I called and was told it was $116. While retrieving his car, my friend asked the guy at Pat's why his car was towed. He said there was nothing "Pat's" could do, he was called by security at East Cambridge Health Center so they just complied. There was another guy there who had been in the Health Center with his wife for only a half hour and his car was towed. So curious, my friend went back to the Health Center and asked if they called Pat's and they said no, they don't have security, the only security is property owner located in the offices above the Money Tree store. So, my friend went to the property owner and asked them about towing his car. They said they didn't call anyone, that Pat's roams the parking lot and tows at random. ??? So, the guy at Pat's lied, they randomly tow cars maybe when business is down, who knows. They towed at least two cars that were not parked illegally, and they only accept cash, which is in itself a questionable practice because credit cards guarantee payment. M.G.L. Chapter 159B: Section 6B states "Every person engaged in the towing away of motor vehicles, under this section, shall annually, on or before March the thirty-first, transmit to the department a financial statement on a form prescribed by the department, reflecting the net profits for the preceding year from such towing operation. A person who fails to make such return, within the time herein provided, shall forfeit twenty-five dollars for each day after March thirty-first that said return is not so filed." I guarantee you, they do not comply with this law because there is no paper trail for moneys they collect. Everyone who gets their car towed should demand a receipt and then send it to their city hall. Pat's has some kind of sweet deal with these cities. The Tauros are well connected. It's such a scam one has to wonder why no one has ever done an investigative report on it locally. I recommended the idea to Hank Phillippi Ryan some time back but I did not get a response. Last year during one of our many snowstorms, I was staying with family out of state when I got the text message from Somerville that a parking ban was going to take effect. I wasn't coming back for a week, and I knew that I had left my car parked on the wrong side of the street. Given the city's strict parking ordinances, all told I would have ended up paying 300+ for the towing and tickets and storage that would have accrued while I was gone, so I called Pat's with the strange request to tow own car from one side of the street to the other. The guy I spoke to (Bob, I believe) was completely understanding and helpful, and he called me back several times from the tow truck to let me know where he had found my car, and where he'd moved it to. He gave me a ballpark estimate beforehand and then a more accurate (and slightly lower) one once he was on the scene. What could have been a really stressful and expensive experience was instead a friendly and fair one at a fraction of the cost. I really appreciated it. read more

OK, so this won't make me a very popular person, but my experience with Pat's is as a tower, not a towee. I live on a street with private parking and assigned parking spots. Once in a while someone gets the bright idea to ignore the dozen "PRIVATE PARKING -- RESIDENTS ONLY -- VIOLATORS TOWED AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE" signs everywhere and take a chance to park in my spot. When it comes time to tow, my household uses Pat's. They've been pretty quick about coming to get the car and were really courteous. To the guy in the Oldsmobile that I towed: Sorry? These people are unscrupulous. Stay away if possible. I went shopping at Target and after went nearby for something to eat. My car was 10 minutes over the limit and was towed right away. It was a SUNDAY and a basically empty parking lot (closed down CW price on the same lot). I will now be spending my hard earned money in Cambridge or Boston instead of the local businesses in Somerville. Maybe they are a reason this area of Somerville is a wasteland with closed down stores. The city of Somerville needs to rein these people in. They are not good for the local community. P.S. They make you pay and sign the paper before you can see your car which is at another lot. It's so you can't dispute any damages prior to signing the paper. read more

Ultimately the people reviewing Pat's in this forum aren't the ones the company really serves. I'm sure municipalities and large landowners (with parking lots) are pleased with Pat's as evidence by the size of their business. No one is going to be happy or feel good about forking over unseemly amounts of money to get their car back. Nonetheless, I had an experience with Pats during the Blizzard of 2013 I'd like to share. Whether I deserved to get towed or not is in this case irrelevant. After finding out our car was towed two things really bothered me. 1) We called and gave Pat's our license plate number and were told it was in their McGrath highway lot by one of their service reps. She also said we'd be able to get our car and that the lot was open. She was flat out wrong on all accounts. We arrived and not only was our car not at the McGrath lot (it was at Dilboy Stadium on the other side of town), we would not have been able to get it since their lot had not even be plowed yet. Misinformation of this sort is just plain unacceptable. 2) They are exorbitantly expensive. $166 for a tow and that was without being charged the lots fees because a state driving ban was in effect. Getting rich off a blizzard isn't apparently the sole territory of snow plows. All that said, I'll own being towed and the fact that Pat's is only following orders from their client, be it a city or development, but I hold their business and their business practices in the same regard I hold used-car salesmen and scummy mechanics who con people with high repair bills. Our car was towed and we were charged at a rate of $35 a day for storage/parking. You can park in downtown Boston's best buildings for less than $35 a day Our car was kept in Somerville, where parking garage rates are $7.00-14.00 per 24 hrs. So why the premium?? Pat's location is awful. We were also charged $30 "notification fee"- yet we were never notified. A stamp costs less than $1. email is free. Even if we were notified $30 is absurd. We were charged $5.50 "for Fuel". Gas is less than $4 a gallon and gets you 15 miles. The car was parked less than a mile from Pat's Towing. Round trip would cost $1 of gas. And then of course $90 towing charge and a ticket for $40. Pat is paying off someone in City Hall , as he takes home a lot more then the City does. read more

I had my car towed from parking lot Lambert Street where my husband lives at 4:00am. There were no signs regarding parking or towing. Originally there was visitor parking signs but assuming construction took them down without letting tenants know. My husband is disabled and lives in the building. They had me come to their place to retrieve my vehicle and no one was there. The building was closed but when I called, the phone rang right there. Someone did answer and I explained what happened but it didn't matter. I was told that it was $144 to get the car back. My husband and I had cash to pay the bill but the employee there said we needed exact money because he didn't have any cash and the place was closed? huh? I thought towing was a 24/7 business? So, you can tow my vehicle at 4:00 am but you don't have change and no explanations for anything at all. Luckily, we had 4 dollars on us to give him the exact amount. If not, we would have to walk down the street to a place to purchase something to get change:( . I know towing is a business and it is what it is, but not everyone should be towed or not allowed to dispute the tow. Unfortunately, you just have to pay the bill and keep it moving. We asked the tow guy how to get the ink off my window that was put there by your tow company, but he said that it was our responsibility to get it off , not the tow company. Huh?? Not a good experience and this is the second time being towed by your company over the years in housing parking lot. We heard back from our assessor, and thankfully it does not appear that there is any damage from the first attempt to tow by Pat's. I'm very relieved to hear that, but frankly, given the behavior of the driver, and the significant difference between how Pat tried to tow my car and how it was eventually towed, I still would never trust them with my vehicle. Be careful before dealing with them, and make sure that you have a basic understanding of how they are going to tow your car before you let them touch it. I understand that we're not the tow drivers, and that they are. But as potential customers, we have a right to know and should never feel bullied into just letting them "do their thing." They are definitely not paid by the smiles over at Pat's. Had my car towed due to street cleaning (doh!) and when I called to find out if it was there, the first lady to pick up checked for my license plate # and said no it wasn't. I was in the middle of asking a question when she hung up on me. Maybe they were too busy counting their money? I called a few hours later and the second lady was more helpful. Turns out they didn't enter my license plate # into the system which is why they couldn't find my car. So I run over to Somerville and when I arrive, they ask for $131. Now, I'm looking up at their sign that breaks down the cost: $90 for a basic tow, $27.50 for a storage fee. I'm not brilliant at math but it doesn't add up. I ask for a breakdown of the costs and she tells me I'll get it with the receipt (b/c obviously it takes a lot of energy to explain). She gives me the bill to sign and I ask her again for a breakdown and she's like, "What, you need it now?" She inwardly sighs and says, "$90 for tow, $35 for storage, and $6 for gas." Why is it $35 for storage and not $27.50? Because they are in the city of Cambridge and I am from the city of Boston, although Pat's is literally 1.8 miles from me. I don't even get how that makes a difference to them or how it accounts for a higher storage fee. Plus, the "Boston" fee isn't posted anywhere. I pay and walk out feeling like their address is really apropo because yea...it's highway robbery. But my beef is not about being towed b/c of street cleaning, but that if I needed to get my car towed by them at some point I would never turn to Pat's. I wouldn't trust them to treat me with any decency or to give me pertinent or truthful information. So just beware. read more

I never actually got them to come get my car, so I only had half the 'wonderful' experience of Pat's Towing. I called to get a tow and they said it would be 45 minutes. Over an hour later, I called back and they said, well sorry, we've been busy and we'll get to it sometime today. The woman on the phone was completely rude and unsympathetic and seems surprised that I would think that she meant what she said in the first place given the fact that I was such a low priority. I canceled the request as "sometime today" was the best they could promise me and went with another company (i'd recommend Hi Tow). If you can avoid them, do. read more

But the tow guy skips at least 20 cars some without any stickers and chooses to tow mine and 1 other person out of at least 20. PLEASE READ! I was recently towed by Pat's. I called to find out the price and it had gone up $30 when I arrived for a "Notification Fee." The city of Somerville contracts Pat's for city towing, which is who had my car towed. After getting my car back, I realized there had also been $20 or so stolen from my car. I emailed the mayor, city, and police dept. I surprisingly received an email within an hour from the police dept. They started an investigation on Pat's because of these ridiculous fees. Pat's Towing was ordered by Somerville Police to repay ANYONE who had been charged a "$30 Notification Fee." So if you have been hit up with ridiculous charges from them, (even throughout the past year) PLEASE contact the police department, city hall and the mayor of Somerville. Pat's is required to refund this money. I received a check and an apology letter within 2 days from them. And PLEASE file a complaint with the city and police dept about Pat's if you have had a problem. The city should know that they are employing a business that is far from legitimate. read more

Me and my buddy r jokin around sayin wouldn't it be funny if the car go towed and it actually did. I learn that it is 112.75 to get the car back. Not only was the guy at the counter an A-hole he was also about 500 pounds. He was sucha fat-ass. They have signs in that parking lot that are not even able to be seen that say u cant park here. I was going pick up my car in front of my house in Somerville when I noticed it was gone. I called the Somerville traffic and parking office and the told me that it had been towed and that I should go to the police station first. Apparently a police officer had called the towing company the same day early morning. Note that I was not given a 48h of notice before someone decided to put up a sign next to my car. I ran for 15min to the police station and spoke with an office who gave me a card and told me to go to Medford to pick up my car. The office was so unwilling to help and said she had no info and that it wasn't her job to help. I grabbed an Uber in the middle of rush hour for a 20 min ride to the towing company cash office. The guy was so rude, didn't want to share any info, just swiped my card and told me to go to a different address to pick up my car. Eventually when I got to my car I also found a parking ticket. I did nothing wrong and I'm planning to go to the city hall to fight for my rights. They charged me $90 dollars for towing, $35 dollars for "Storage" and $35 for "Additional hour/Equipment". I asked the guy if it was fair to charge me $70 for storage and additional hour/equipment when my car had not even made it to the lot. The guy was so rude and would not listen...Sure enough it was a losing battle but it is nothing but cheating and fraud. I was completely ok to pay $90, but, I was charged $70 for no reason. - To make things worst, the lot was 5 minute walk from their office. I get to the pick up lot, to find no one there. I find two other customers waiting to pick their car, who had been waiting for 10 minutes on a cold 7 deg F Boston night!!! After waiting 5 minutes at the lot, the tow truck guy pulls in with another car, he stops, does not check our receipt and simply say "You are all set, you can go and find your car!!!" They towed my car and had it for all of 1 hour and 40 mins and charged me $218.00!! This company is robbery. My moon roof was on tilt so they claimed they had to crash wrap it to keep the rain out (it wasn't raining it was sunny and 55 degrees but thanks) the 3x3 piece of plastic that didn't even cover what they claimed it was covering so had it needed to serve its purpose it would have not stopped anything my car would have gotten ruined. They charged 75 dollars for that crap. So I start my video camera as they opened the gate for me and walked over to my car so they can't claim it was tampered with and yes I still have the video. So I said well thanks for charging me 75 dollars for something that wasn't even properly put on and he said well if it had rained you could have put in a claim the driver was probably in a rush to get back out! Like what! For 75 dollars I'd expect my car wrapped like a Christmas present with a damn bow on top! I'm surprised I didn't get charged for not having a valve cap on one of my tires. The ATM they have only lets you take out 200 at a time go figure and it charges you $3.00 plus another $3.00 so it was 6 dollars per transaction and oh it's not their ATM but hey its robbery so if the shoe fits pats towing will be part of it. Iv has my car towed before by other company's in my life and as shitty as it was the people where nice and made the best out of a bad situation and didn't take advantage of people but not pats they are the worst. Iv never heard a good thing about this place. They towed my car because I went into my barber shop to get a hair cut and then went into target to do my shopping but because I stepped foot off the property (barber shop is on the corner) it constituted me for a tow (their words). Shady people. I parked at the Twin City mall in Somerville for 10 minutes to go across the street giving medication to a patient. When I got back I found my car towed. I could not believe how they got there so quick. They had my purse with all my belongings it . I could not even pay a cab to drive me to the lot. I was so desperate to go see the patients that I begged a stranger to take me to the place to pick up the car. These low lives charged me $144 plus 3 dollars ATM fees for having the car for only 30 minutes. As a result I saw my diabetic patients late. read more
