I'd never heard of Baan Wasana Thai Restaurant until I saw a friend post about them. It's a family run Northern Thai spot located in between Jess' Restaurant and Nana's Green Tea. We've been twice, both times for dinner. Service has been friendly and sweet even when it's been busy. The menu is split into appetizers, soups, salads, beef/pork/chicken/seafood, curries, noodles, fried rice, vegetarian and desserts. You choose your spice level (1 - very mild to 5 - extra hot). We went with a 4, which was perfect. They also have $12.00 to $14.00 lunch specials (Tuesday to Saturday, 11:30am to 2:00pm). Trip #1 - 2x Thai iced tea ($4.00) - good sized. One of the better versions we've had in awhile. - Thai spring rolls - on the house (due to a slight wait). Spring rolls were crunchy and reminded me of how my grandma used to make hers. - Pa naeng ($15.00) - curry was balanced with good flavour. - Jasmine rice ($4.50 large) - good enough to share between three. - Pad kee mao ($15.00) - the spiciest dish; really enjoyed the kick/heat level. Decent amount of vegetables. - Pla lad prig ($20.00) - okay; crispy but not a lot of meat on the fish and you just don't get much flavour. Trip #2 - Som tum ($12.00) - standard fare. - Jasmine rice ($8.00 family size) - good enough to share between our group of four. - Pad gra tiem with tiger prawns ($17.00) - decent portion of prawns (you get 7) and vegetables. Sauce went well with the stir fry. - Yellow curry ($15.00) - my favourite dish of the night. Level of heat/spice was spot on and a generous portion of beef. Curry was well balanced. - Raad na ($15.00) - reminded us of the Chinese version of this dish. Comfort food. - Baan Wasana special ($14.00) - solid. I'm torn writing this review. After scanning what others wrote. It was my first meal of the day after another morning match. Everything was suppose to taste amazing as it is your first meal. Baan Wasana had glowing reviews on yelp and google.... Is it because there is no competition in Kerrisdale or Vancouver for middle ground priced Thai food? It could be a factor. All the positives were there, packed house at lunch, tons of take out orders. Thai speaking servers and back kitchen... On to the food... Iced Thai Coffee $4 1/5 It was watery and sweet. I couldn't tell if it was coffee or tea. The only positive was the glassware and the size. I didn't even bother finishing the drink Fried Wontons $3.5 3/5 It was like eating tortillas with a smidge of meat, the sauce is weak. It's neither salty, sweet or vinegary. Pad Thai $12 1.5/5 Positive, the texture of the noodles was excellent. 3 Prawns. Size is appropriate to price and location. Negative, isn't pad Thai suppose to be "fried" or have "wok flavour". Tossed in flames with sauce at high heat adding liquids to it until noodles soften. Seems like allot of corners were missing to create a retirement home version of less oil, less sodium. Also, there is none of the 4 elements of Thai cuisine. This was lacking in flavour. Sprouts were lacking and so was tofu. Also, why does their peanuts have so most moisture that it's not toasty but rather gummy. Final thoughts Wine and beer (so competitive in pricing). Come in for drinks first and something to go with the drink. read more

Tasty Thai place in the heart of Kerrisdale. Parking is available on the side streets. Unfortunately the free underground lot on 42nd is no more. As in no more free spots. Boo. The place seems like a mom and pop shop. The website seems to confirm this (the name means "Wasana's house"). Staff were friendly. No complaints there. The lunch special is a pretty good deal. $12 as of the time of writing. I had the pad gra prao (Thai basil stir fry). Ingredients tasted very authentic. Spiciness is on a scale of 0-5. I had the level 5 and it was maybe medium spicy. Fortunately the staff also had some cut chili fish sauce available. With this, the dish finally had enough heat. Special mention for the sauce. They also give tamarind candies with the bill. Overall I left happy. Definitely wouldn't mind coming back at some point, though there are so many other places to try in the area. read more

I bought a take-out lunch special from @baanwasana in Kerrisdale. The Pad Thai is the Stir-fried thin rice noodles with (prawn, chicken, or vegetables), tofu, egg, and bean sprout in a sweet tamarind sauce, topped with ground peanuts and a lime wedge. It also comes with a small side green salad. The portion was very generous for $12+ taxes. It was an authentic Thai dish. The rice noodles were al dente and flavorful. I have been to this Thai restaurant near my home twice in a week. Haven't eaten any Thai foods for a long while, one day I was craving for Thai foods and I went to here for lunch. For the first visit I had Yellow Curry Chicken with rice. They served the Curry in a bowl and the rice in the dish. The portion is just good for lunch. I picked mild spicy and it was really not so spicy. The curry tasted well and balance, not too mild and not to strong. Then ingredients absorbed the curry flavour and it was easy for me to finish the rice. As the first time the mild spicy level was so mild, in my second visit I ordered Masamun Curry Chicken with rice and picked medium spicy. It tasted better with the peanuts and white union in the curry. Again I finished all. The lunch set came with a small bowl of soup or green salad. The soup tasted slightly sweet and it could improve your appetite. I had the same soup in another Thai restaurant that used thyme and I think thyme is slightly better. For the environment and service, they were excellent. The restaurant was very clean, no matter the table or floor. They put some That decorations and played Thai music. The servers were very attentive and nice. Overall the dining experience in here was quite good and I will go there again to try other Thai dishes. read more

Baan Wasana Thai Restaurant serves authentic, bold and rich flavours from Chiang Mai. So happy to have accidentally walked into this family-owned business. For three of us, we ordered: squid salad, beef Thai basil stir-try, chicken green curry with jasmine rice, prawn pad thai and black sticky rice pudding with taro and young coconut. All the dishes were delicious but if I had to pick my most favourites it would be the squid salad as the squid was so tender; pad thai noodles which was not too wet and nailed the true Northern flavours; and the black sticky rice pudding balancing the sweet with salty to perfection. This dessert will transport you to paradise. Looking forward to my next visit and already know what to order. Our server was great and answered all our questions and even provided great suggestions. Compared to other Thai restaurants, Baan Wasana's prices are affordable and offers good portion sizes. Lots of free side street parking. This is Kerrisdale so everything closes early in this part of town so come earlier to get a table. read more

Excellent food, fast service and very reasonable prices. We ordered the pad Thai with tofu and it was super yummy. They tell you right up front that they spice their food strongly, so if you're sensitive to spice, you'd better order mild or very mild spice. The first time there I ordered mild and the chili just about blew my head off. We also ordered the pad see lew which was sweet and delicious. The first time we had it with beef and the beef was tough, so the next time we had it with chicken, which was delicious. I'd highly recommend this restaurant. read more

How do businesses survive, you wonder that, and you really wonder that when you enter a place, and leave feeling just cheated upon in terms of ethnicity and price, and we have another one, courtesy of my wallet, luckily for me and my partner we didn't spend that much, but you would think that being where this place is located in that the standard of food would be elevated a notch, well as the star ratings system goes "Eek! Methinks not"! A promise of good Thai food goes to waste if you go in here, not that the service was bad, but when your questions aren't being answered, and your only response to what good Thai authentic cuisine is, when they ask if you'd like to order the 'Pad Thai' is just wrong, like going into a Chinese restaurant asking for 'beef fried lice (I mean rice' was to come out from the server), and that is what we got, just on their end. The place looks like's it's been here a good while, from what my partner says, as she used to work here. You'd think, it's survived this long, it should be alright (it's Kerrisdale for freakin sake's) well the smokescreen was on, and once we sat and looked at the menu, the first thing that came to mind was, this better be good, as the prices were on the high-side, and when you saw what was being served the thought from our brains was a "really", like food court style food landing on the table. The dish we ordered today was the 'Moo Nam Prig Poaw' (your like.. what the heck did you order....??) Some pork mixed up with some green and red peppers, some onions and some Thai chili paste for close to $11. Let down, let alone with a bit of steam from the let down that became anger was probably the feeling at this point. Something that was just thrown together, called some authentic name, premium price chucked on, and having to stomach this knowing that you could probably get this at some other 'hole-in-the-wall' restaurant for almost half the price, and also probably being better is the final feeling of making this one memorable. Baan was my go to place before they had a fire and had to close for a couple of years! They are back and I couldn't be happier!!! The food here is truly exceptional. The epitome of fresh clean true Thai food! Amazing options for vegans as well as everything anyone else could want. The vegan larb is my go to lunch with lettuce wrap. Centrally located in the heart of downtown Kerrisdale, Baan Wasana is a clean, quaint, and consistent restaurant. I'm speculating, but it appears to be a Thai owned and ran establishment. For those who've been to Thailand you can really appreciate the sincere kindness and friendliness of Thai people, and that is reflected in the level of service they offer. I'm a big fan of making my curries spicy. They offer a wide range of levels of spice including: Very Mild - Mild - Medium - Hot - Extra Hot. For me Hot is the perfect amount of spice where its hot enough to put two light beads of sweat on my forehead, but not enough to keep my mouth perma-burning which takes away from my taste enjoyment. For $8.75-$10.45 you'll get to choose from 20 lunch combos which include a dish, plenty of rice and a soup or salad. The salad is very plain - iceberg lettuce with some thousand island dressing (boring!) . That's why it's must to get the soup. It's a simple light broth, but very refreshing. Not the best Thai in Vancouver, but excellent service and great lunch combo's keep me coming back. read more

I ordered the Pad Thai and Larb Tofu, a thai salad, one of my favorite dishes i tried in thailand (well technically i tried the waterfall pork sauce and the seasonings are quite similar) the Pad Thai was not bad at all, i really enjoyed it. however i have yet to find that amazing pad thai that tastes just like from a street side in thailand. even in more westernized places in thailand it can be hard to find that perfect pad thai! but hey: it was good. and the Larb was FANTASTIC. perfectly seasoned and flavoured. i was skeptical of ordering the tofu version because i tried tofu larb in a different local restaurant and was disappointed. but this was perfect. they chopped the tofu up all small so it had the texture of ground meat. perfect! read more

Went back again, this time for their lunch menu (slightly different from dinner). We ordered the spicy noodle tom yum goong soup (spicy level 3) and thai fried rice (level 2). The noodle soup was flavourful as expected, I just wished it stayed hot in the bowl for a while longer. Also the pork was quite dry. The fried rice was not as good as anticipated. Though the texture was excellent (almost perfect rice cooking), I could hardly taste any of the unique Thai flavours I hungered for. It was definitely more bland than other Thai rice dishes I've had in the past. A bit of a miss. Also, a different lady served us during lunch - she wasn't as warm and friendly as the owner (?). On a drizzling Saturday morning I was determined to ride my bike through UBC. The weather was a bit iffy, but I told myself not to whimp out cuz of a bit of rain. I rode up to the Kerrisdale Community Center and had lunch with a friend who was working there. We ended up at Baan Wasana Thai Restaurant. This place is in the heart of the ritzy Kerrisdale commercial district. I think its a family restaurant. When I was there, I would deduce that the mom and her two pretty daughters were serving the customers and the dad's in the back cooking? Well I could be wrong, but its a romantic notion none the less! Ok down to the nuts and bolts... Food was delish! We shared the Fish Cakes and I had a Pad Thai! Both were very good! I love the fish cake sauce! Also, considering the area, $10 for a Pad Thai in Kerrisdale is a bargain! The Pad Thai was a good size too! Overall, a great place to come for lunch! Super friendly service! Our tea cups, and water cups were always full, and I like the fact the the girls and the mom came by several times to ask if we were enjoying our meals. I can't help but think they really care (even though I know they really don't care! Haha). Ok I would come again! And for those that care... (I'm sure there must be a few out there that may care....) Tried this place for dinner on a Sunday night and it was pretty packed. I really liked the stuffed chicken wings appetizer (not a lot of places have this dish and can do it well). The Moo Yang (BBQ pork) skewer appetizer were just okay. I like that the main curry dishes come in mild to very, very hot. They have a rating scale of 1 to 10. Keep in mind that the dishes are very spicy/ hot !! The chicken in red curry (shrimp paste coconut mild with bamboo shoot and peppers) was pretty good, and the pork in green curry (basil coconut milk with eggplant and peppers) was amazingly flavourful. The bowls weren't that big but it was not skimpy on the ingredients. Awesome place for groups or family dinners. Lot's of young university students. read more

Tonight I had dinner here with a friend that I haven't seen since he moved away from Toronto. We settled on this place coz the mexican place he thought of was closed, it had a veggie menu that would meet my vegan needs and the place also had good reviews. Sadly, I don't agree with the high ratings this place received, I most def had better thai food (in Toronto). The menu was very similar to my favorite Thai place in Toronto, but I settled for the veggie pad Thai with tofu, no eggs and extra spicy. The dish was rather disappointing as it came with virtually no tofu, unless you count the 2-3 tiny, tiny cubes of fried bean curd -that does NOT count! It did not come with eggs (thank God) but extra spicy was tolerable, which means it was only mild spicy in my books. To give you an idea of how it wasn't extra spicy: I had to add extra spice to it. And as I said in one of my previous reviews: If I am not gasping for water, then it is NOT (extra) spicy. My friend's fried rice with pawns looked ok, like something you could get from Manchu Wok, only less soy sauce and with pan-fried pawns on top. But he said it was dry, which is why he asked for the hot sauce -to make it a tad more moist. Despite the mediocre food, I had an enjoyable evening catching up with my friend and the service was good -friendly, prompt and polite. And it's not like the food was terrible, I just had better Thai food elsewhere (*cough* Toronto *cough*). read more

Ordered the Thai fresh roll as we love it so much and it's a must order food whenever we went to a Thai restaurant..however the spring roll here was made differently..there wasn't prawn in it and mostly vegetables and fuse with Chinese sausage..the taste was okay but personally prefer the one we had in other restaurants..the homemade peanut sauce tasted good tho We ordered chicken green curry for our first main dish..it was very considerable that they provided level of spiciness for us to choose so it suits everyone's preference.. The green curry tasted great too!!! Pad Thai was our second main dish for sure!!! This place! Oh my gosh, what a gem! Their food is incredible, the staff are friendly, and their food is completely authentic (and spicy - spice wimps like myself, beware!) I'm quite surprised by the amount of negative reviews I'm seeing. I came with a group of six on a Saturday night right before they were about to announce last call for the kitchen and the staff were incredibly accommodating and friendly. Their pad thai was some of the best I've had in the city! I would absolutely make the trek out to Kerrisdale from Commercial just to get some more of their pad thai. Boyfriend was over the moon about finding sticky rice, and their curries were incredible. It's a pretty narrow space, so I would definitely phone ahead if you're planning on coming in a larger group, but I will absolutely be visiting again! read more

After a pretty bad dinner take-out meal, it wasn't my choice to return here - I blame my coworker. The red curry + soup combo was even worse than last time's pad thai. The curry was bizarrely flavorless, and contained only bamboo shoots with chewy, shriveled-up pieces of pork (also flavorless). Ew. It was initially upsetting to see how small the soup was, but that turned out to be a good thing as I couldn't finish it; the menu nor the server indicated what the soup was supposed to be, but as far as I could tell it was few greens floating in oily dishwater. As such, it's prob. not for the crowd looking for a hip atmosphere, seating can be a bit tight, esp. during lunch times. You won't want to come here if you want to discuss serious business or relationship issues without eavesdroppers unintentionally. Very narrow resto, well-decorated, looks bigger than it is as there's seating in the back too. Too bad they take a break between lunch & dinner. But it's authentic, Thai-owned. Let me first start off by saying I should have listened to all the reviews on this site and never gone here is the first place. I ordered Pad Thai with chicken. It was for pick up but when I went there it was almost ready. The staff were really nice (hence the one star) and kept me updated on how much longer I would have to wait. They even went back to the kitchen a couple of times to find out. HOWEVER, when I sat down to eat it I immediately noticed the lack of chicken. There was a shredded piece here and there but all I got was a pile of noodles. No tamarind sauce and barely any egg, tofu or bean sprout. I had ordered the spice level at 4 (as I like it spicy) but the spice was really at a level 3. The dish also lacked another very important element and that was taste. Other than the hot spice I tasted nothing. The spice didn't over power the flavor either as it wasn't that spicy. No taste of the tamarind sauce. At the end I threw away half of it was I couldn't take it anymore. A complete waste of my money. So let this be a lesson to me and all....listen to the reviews! Ps. For the most flavorful Thai food, I can always count on Baan Wasana. Lunch menu combos are awesome and I'm always satisfied with the prawn pad thai, tom yum goong, papaya salad, Thai iced tea, and sticky mango rice dessert. I love this place and look forward to going. Nice decor and ambiance and helpful service. They have a separate vegetarian menu. It's a large laminated menu that you would never know about if you did not ask. Once you get that menu, adventure awaits--so many delicious dishes to choose from! I really love this place! They have the best noodles and thai dishes here. It tastes very authentic and they are pretty generous with portions. The restaurant itself is a bit small, but that is ok because I have never failed to get a table. The staff and service was decent, not amazing but not horrible. Definitely a to-go place for me when I'm in Kerrisdale. The Thai food is awesome, especially the pad thai and the curries. I've realized they don't add as much spice as the other Thai restaurants (such as the ones in Kits) but I kind of prefer the lighter taste! You could ask the server to add more flavor to your dish beforehand, although I do admit sometimes the chicken/shrimp can be overcooked. The staff is friendly and prompt, and the atmosphere is great. The only downside is whenever I would like to order pick up it ALWAYS takes around 40-50 minutes at night. That is not their fault so the reason for -1 star is just due to the overall rating. I personally prefer to go during lunch, since it is a lot cheaper and you get soup/salad with an entree as well! If anyone is interested in beverages, get a thai iced tea, it is delightful! Though Baan Wasana wins hugely on customer service, there is a little lacking in consistency. Each time I call in, I am greeted by a friendly voice that takes my order and accurately relays an expected time for pick up. I walk over to get my food and am never forced to wait much more than 45 seconds to a minute. I admit that I mostly go for the Pad Thai but it is through this that I have learned their levels of spice vary greatly from visit to visit. There is also a distinct lack of peanuts which is disappointing. I would not recommend getting the prawn version but the chicken is quite delicious. I'm giving full marks for great staff but 3/5 for quality and taste. I will definitely go back to try a few more dishes because the overall value is on point. $10 lunch combos! read more

Probably 2.5 stars, and I'll round up since it's the only Thai place in the area (that I know of) so if you're craving Thai it can hit the spot. I really like the coconut soup with lemongrass, basil and chicken -- the flavours are interesting and rich. The pad thai is decent. Also had a fried chicken dish which was fairly lacking in flavour. Friendly but sometimes slow service makes this a good place to go when you are looking for a leisurely lunch/dinner with a companion you enjoy talking to. Wish there were better Thai in the neighbourhood to maybe push Baan Wasana to do a bit better with the quality and taste of the food, but I appreciate having at least this one Thai option available. read more

The wait staff practiced the policy of standing a side watching and waiting for you to signal them before approaching your table. I was actually surprised he gave a recommendation and was able to back it up, it doesn't happen much at most Asian places I have been too, must be the area we were in. The menu was extensive, even offering a selection of salads. I have never heard or seen a Thai salad, and I would not get to tonight as we did not order one. I sort of feel that salad are not worth paying for, its just ingredients added in a bowl, un-treated. I am sure many of you would argue with me. The spring rolls for our appies were nothing special, but you cannot really go wrong with something savory that has been deep fried with a tangy sauce for dipping. With the chicken satay we expected the usual BBQ grilled flavour, but at "Baan Wasana" it was marinated in curry spice and glazed with coconut milk. The peanut dipping sauce did not disappoint, we just needed more so every bite could be slathered in its deliciousness. The second condiment was a cucumber, red onion, vinegar and sugar mixture. It was not that great for dipping both with its drippy texture and its taste not being too complimentary to the curried spicy satay meat, but alone I ate it all.
