I don't live in Montrose, but it sure feels like it when I eat here. It's the kind of place that seems like locals just pop into for lunch or dinner. Atmosphere is causal with counter service. Staff is friendly and informative about the menu options. For lunch, I normally stick with the sandwiches or paninis and haven't been steered wrong yet. For dinner, I recommend a pasta (half order is more than enough for one) paired with a side salad. There is a small lot behind the restaurant that tends to fill up fast. On the weekend, it starts to get crowded around 6p. Don't forget to try the cucumber water or one of their delicious cookies (order these after your meal at the food pick up station). Whew, I was completely stuffed after eating here. Happy belly! Definitely more carbs than I prefer to eat, but worth it. My boyfriend and I split a whole serving of the Rigatoni Bolognese and a 1/2 order of the chicken parmesan. They don't skimp out on portions, that's for sure. The pasta was cooked perfectly and there was just enough sauce that it wasn't overwhelming. The chicken parmesan was nice and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It was hard for me to decide on a meal because all of the choices they had to offer sounded very good to me. The skirt steak with pesto gnocchi is on my list for next time I come here. I tried Paulie's for the first time yesterday and the food was really good. I went around 4 and we did not encounter long lines at all (fine by me). I tried the rigatoni balognese and it was delicious. I got the half portion for $10 and honestly it's huge. I have no idea who eats the full portion but I would like to meet those blessed individuals. Point is their half portions and the size of a full entree. I really liked the inside of the restaurant. I have lost track of how many times I have eaten at Paulie's. This is my go-to spot when I want italian. My favorite dish is the canestri and broccoli. It's so fresh and simple. My husband lives for their lasagna special and bread. Their key lime pie is delicious. The soup, the salad, everything. I haven't had anything that I did not like there. The service is always fantastic; fast and friendly. I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is very refreshing to have a casual and budget friendly italian place in the montrose area. My wife and I were pleased with their selection of food. Their were a dozen or so things we would have liked to have tried. The ceasar salad is worth getting and you could definitely make a meal of a small if you added some protein. The peperoni pizza wasnt as good as i had hoped but it was a good value for the price. The castreni alla fungi which we both really enjoyed. It was medium bodied and very well balanced with mushrooms. They had a good selection of beer and wine and makes for a great fast casual dining experience. This is such a great place for lunch or dinner! It's an America Italian menu, the food is seriously homemade, fresh and eclectic. I was greeted upon entering and the menu is on a huge wall so it made perusing the delectable choices easy to see but hard to decide because everything sounded so good! I ordered the KC sandwich which had avocado, provolone cheese, lettuce, seasoned tomato, and an awesome spread that was similar to pesto but creamier! I also enjoyed a half price glass of wine per the cashiers suggestion. Oh how could I forget the potato salad! Fresh, red potatoes with the skins on, herbs and light mayo not super heavy, amazing & very flavorful. My lunch buddy ordered a panini and it came with the best pasta salad of life, serious. Super cute cozy place, I recommend coming here between 1:30- 4:30p if you want to enjoy a calm, more quiet atmosphere..... and 1/2 price wine too ; ) The guy at the front counter was so helpful and crazy friendly as he walked me through the menu and let me sample the wine. With so many mouthwatering options to choose from, It was hard to decide but I ended up going with the KC special with an added chicken breast because I kept reading how delicious their chk breast was....and it is! The sandwich is served on soft wheat bread with a pesto sauce, roasted tomatoes, avocado and mozzarella, YUM! It normally comes with a side of Italian potato salad but I opted to sub that out with a house side salad....a mistake to me. I'm just not a fan of Romaine lettuce because it's so "veiny." The dressing was very flavorful but next time I will specify for an arugula and spinach side salad instead. Yes, the sandwich may have been quite challenging and messy to eat but it was sooooo good : ) Now, onto the pasta! Of course I had to try their infamous bolangase dish (small size which is plenty big enough) and it was quite tasty, creamy and rich, just how I like my pasta. This has to be one of their go-to dishes since literately EVERY table ordered it as well. So, we spent the day running around picking up stuff for our Christmas parties. As we do every year we swing by Paulie's and pick up 2 dozen of there fantastic Christmas shortbread cookies. It's a great time and always fun, except for this year, yep that's right we had a Seinfeld moment but instead of the soup Nazi we had the cookie Nazi. We wait in line and when our turn to order we ask for x amount of that and x amount of those as we have been doing for over 10 years. I sense something is off though as the person behind the counter does not seem to be in a very good mood as the customers before us noted as well. Surly it is not due to a long day on your feet as they had just opened. We are told we can not have what we ordered as 6 of one type is not allowed. No checking in the back either to see if they have any more Gingerbread men cookies, what you see is what you get. I understand the 2 dozen limit but the attitude, yikes. It was sad, it seems the personal touch you used to get from Paulie's was gone today. No more nice fun talk and happiness on cookie selection. I know what most will think but at $3 a cookie, yes that's right, $3 a cookie I would think they would make a little more effort. I am hoping this is just a one time deal and it is corrected or it's chalked up to some sort of unhappiness carried into work. Either way fix it. Paulie's blew my expectations! Unsure as to why I thought I'd be coming into a dining establishment that was stuffy and slightly expensive, but paulie's was none of that. Very rustic and homey feel with their brick walls and pick up to order set up that ditches the waiters and uses a buzzer to notify that food is ready. But the food! Wow! Such huge portions! And each bite of what seems like an endless train of bites tasted just as delicious as the one before. My friend and I split the full order of the canestri alla funghi and the half order of the summer salad. The size of the plates proved too hefty for the both of us to finish so we definitely recommend sharing a half order of the pasta and a half order of a salad with a friend. You'll still be filled to the brim with just that. The summer salad was absolutely necessary to cut through the richness of the pasta. It was a salad piled with arugula, cucumbers, the most flavorful of seared tomatoes, parmesan, and a slice of watermelon. Quite refreshing. I had really high expectations for Paulie's based on the excellent reviews on Yelp. However, it kinda fell short. This is a cute rustic chic cafe ideal for dinner dates or small groups. You place the order at the counter and wait for the buzzer to go off, to pick up your order. So, basically it is self service. The staff were really courteous and friendly. Even though there was long queue, it moved reasonably quick. The pastas comes in small or regular portions. I went for the mushroom pasta, bigger portion for $16. The smaller portion is served on a plate, whereas the regular portion is served in a big bowl. The portion was wayyyy bigger than expected! I could probably make three meals out of it! It came wide a side of two toasted bread slices. The pasta tasted good, but there was clearly something missing and the Alfredo sauce is a little bland for my taste. Maybe, I would have liked it with marinara. On brighter side, there wasn't too much cheese in the dish. I haven't really worked up my appetite, therefore I barely finished a quarter of the portion. They also have a good wine list. I didn't bother to pair up my dinner with wine, since I really don't care much about it. Instead, I opted for the ginger lemonade, which had a weird taste. But, the best part was the dessert, for which we ordered Nutella rocky road ice cream. Nutella hardly disappoints. It was just perfect and was easily the best part of the dinner! I was really surprised that I got two scoops only for $5, given that the ice cream is from cloud 10 creamery. They don't have an extensive dessert list. I'm disappointed I haven't reviewed Paulie's previously. It's one of those forgotten treasures of Houston simply because it's been around for as long as I can remember (which only goes back to 1995 when I moved here and then started working downtown in 1997 which brought me to lunching along Westheimer). I got the Pork Tenderloin sandwich for years before getting focused on the Mediterranean Pasta Salad for the better part of a decade. I'm now on the Petronella panini. I get a little side pasta salad with it so it's the best of both worlds. Turkey, bacon, swiss on sourdough...yum! Great place for lunch or dinner. Friendly staff. If you haven't been, take some time to stop by. Oh, and get a cookie. I don't lately because I just really shouldn't, but my lunch buddies and I used to always get a cookie. My first experience at Paulie's was a very pleasant one, great service and delicious food. Upon first entering the door, you're greeted by the friendly staff behind the counter & have an opportunity to select your menu items from the wall-sized menu. My colleague ordered fettuccine Alfredo with Roasted Salmon & a side Cesar salad with a lemonade. I also wanted fettuccine Alfredo, but since it was my first visit, I thought it would be better to order something different & my colleague and I could try each other's mean, to get a better idea of the variety of food. I decided on the Canestri & Broccoli, also with a side Cesar salad, also I ordered a Tea. The cups with ice were handed to us to use the self-service drink dispensers in the dining room. We were also given a pager to inform us of when the food was ready. After we poured our drinks and selected our table, the pager beeped & the salads were waiting for us to pick up. The side Cesar salads were delicious. After we (almost) inhaled them, we picked up the entrees. The Alfred sauce was delicious & the Roasted Salmon was probably the best Salmon I've ever had. The Canestri & Broccoli has an amazing texture & the Parmigiano sauce was good. If I had 1 critique, it would be to have the Roasted garlic, Roasted a little more to bring out the flavor a bit. This is a great place to grab lunch. Pretty good for groups since you can pull tables together. The parking situation is reasonable for this area...there's actually a small lot behind the restaurant. I had the pizzitola panini and thought it was very well done. The pesto/tomato/cheese ratio was perfection. It wasn't a greasy mess, either, which I appreciated. The pasta salad was REALLY good for being a token side dish. I almost liked it better than the panini. I liked the drinks a lot too...I tried the ginger lemonade (lacking in ginger flavor, but a nice tart taste) and the cucumber water (refreshing, with a great cucumber flavor). I would come back. This is the best Italian dining experience I've ever had! Their food is superb and is always made fresh. Their portions are large while their prices are affordable. You order can be customizable if you ask them too. I usually get the smaller size portion of the chicken fettuccine alfredo. It doesn't come with broccoli or any vegetables, but they will include it in your order as long as you ask. With the smaller size portion, I never end up finishing it, I always have enough leftover for another meal. If you can't decide what you want to get, you can always ask the staff. They're incredible friendly. Paulie's can become crowded during lunch and dinner time, but you can always call in and order ahead of time. They do a great job of having the food ready whenever you get there. Parking can be difficult sometimes since they have a small lot, but it's definitely worth the hassle! read more

Asides from various pastas, Paulie's also has a bunch of personally-sized pizzas and a plethora of pastries: both sweet and savory carbohydrates that you can stuff into your mouth to your stomach's content. The restaurant is mainly self-serve -- you order up at the counter, after which you receive one of those electronic buzzers that go off when it's ready. Pick up your food at the appropriate counter, and proceed to chow down. The ambiance is clean -- giant chalkboard menu next to the order counter, wooden tables, metal chairs. There's outdoor seating if the weather permits, as well. Overall the dining experience was good, clean, and pleasant here at Paulie's. LOTS of food for the price. i think Paulie's offers the most robust pasta in Houston. I tried their primavera and castrini with fungi. The most notably the pastas were very well prepared and easily defeat their peers in Houston. The primavera came with a lot of chunky lightly cooked vegetables which were excellent and the castrini's white cream sauce was thick but not tiring. Very enjoyable. Also, their full portion is really big and can easily serve two empty stomachs. Just a couple of negatives are: 1) The primavera was greasy and the bottom of my bowl was soggy with oil. 2) We encountered a few lumps of pasta, which were little undercooked because of, well, the lump. Despite these minor negatives, the pasta is very solid. We will go back shortly and surely. read more

And they don't skimp on the sauce at all. You can get whatever meat you want with the fettuccine including salmon. I know this because I ordered shrimp and they mistakenly gave me salmon. After a few more visits here mainly at dinner time, I have really grown to love Paulie's. It's a great spot close to home with large portions and fantastic prices. I will typically order the pastas, with meat in them, but on a recent trip here I finally tried the skirt steak. At $17, one of the priciest items on the menu, it was just as delicious as others have told me. Cooked to a perfect rare and seasoned very well, this large strip of steak comes with a side of pesto gnocchi which is a great compliment. There was only 1 open table in both the indoor and outdoor seating, and luckily I was able to snag it. Clearly, this is a crowd favorite restaurant! And I have to say, I had a pretty great experience and can completely understand the obsession. The cashier was incredibly friendly and very helpful to first-timers and to people wanting to pick out the perfect wine to pair with their dish. Unfortunately, I did not order any wine. But it seemed as if every table had at least one glass, so I imagine the quality to be great. For food, I ordered the Canestri alla Funghi while my friend ordered the Bucatini. We both ordered the half portions and still had leftovers to take home! And I have to say, the pasta was top-notch. The canestri was very savory and just the right balance between light and heavy; the bucatini was a bit spicy, but oh so delicious and refreshing. Besides the wonderful pasta quality, I really loved that they didn't over-season or over-oil their dishes. Unlike other pasta meals, my stomach didn't hate me for being overfed after Paulie's. First off, I've got to give my Yelp friends a shout out for directing me to this place. I've passed this place so many times and never noticed it and now I've been twice in two days. I'm always studying at Agora or Bacchus around the corner and usually end up leaving the area to find food. Not any longer though. Next shout out goes to the staff here. No matter who I've talked to they've all been friendly and gone above and beyond to make my experience great. I've come alone and with a friend and both times ended up chatting with someone at the counter. They're genuinely friendly people. And last but not least is the star of the show, the food. More specifically - the Bucatini Amatraciana! Smoked bacon, garlic, cherry tomato, chili flake & pecorino all come together to make a delicious, slightly spicy (I love spice so I didn't think it was hot but my friend did) pasta dish. Comes with a side of crusty bread to mop up the amazing sauce and clear your plate with. I love pasta and I'm usually so picky with Italian dishes but this plate really does hit the spot.
