We live nearby and in-laws love this place so we all visit frequently. I've personally be eating/drinking at The Pawn Shop for over 30 years. Unfortunately, may change after our most recent outing. We both worked late and were starving. Pawn Shop is 3 mins from home so we went for late dinner and the place was packed. As we began placing our dinner order, a woman behind the bar that neither of us recognized began shouting at our server and waving her arms. Our server then told us that their fryer just went down so we couldn't order food. We said we'll order from the grill and she said the kitchen was closed. Wife and I sat in somewhat disbelief because people at tables all around us were still waiting on their meals and the kitchen wasn't scheduled to close for another 20-30 mins. Our server picked up our disappointment and walked back to double-check with someone that there was absolutely nothing AT ALL we could order to eat. No cold sandwiches, no apps, no chips. Nothing. This is when poor timing and kitchen equipment failure turned into shady rude dishonest behavior. Our drinks then arrived (with our check, without us asking for it) and and as we sat there discussing the unusually strange / shady experience, we watched plates of food being served to tables all around us and guys at the bar. And 5 mins later, a plate of bacon went to folks next to us and the woman behind the bar that yelled kitchen was "closed" as we placed our order approached a guy enjoying a steak and said his French fries would be "right out". We walked to our car shaking our heads discussing how our decades long fondness of this place just turned very sour. My wife's a K-5 teacher with the patience and optimism of a Buddhist priest. She makes excuses for every bad driver on the road and lectures me on flowing around my obstacles and not speaking negative words aloud, she captures spiders and ants in jars to release outdoors, she rescues cats and dogs, etc. etc. But on this occasion, she was more upset than I've ever seen her and had no kind words or excuses for anyone working at this bar on this night. We always tip +20%, we're as laid back as it gets, my wife served tables in a CO ski town for several years after college and is now overly polite and respectful to servers, we never send food back or complain its too hot or cold, and frankly, never spend our time writing a review like this. Ever. But in this case, we agreed its time to make an exception. A regular customer to a place like this might expect the management to visit our table and perhaps offer a round of comp drinks in this situation vs yelling from behind the bar as she turned her back to us. By this time, it was too late to drive anywhere else for our dinner. Besides, we'd just been fed a BS story about the kitchen suddenly experiencing catastrophic failure less than 30 minutes before it's scheduled close then watched food orders to multiple tables pour out of the kitchen. No offer of comp drinks, no rain check for next time, no offer of chips and or any app's they could have heated up, zilch. It was the strangest and rudest bar experience we've ever had anywhere as a couple or individually. And my wife's eaten dinner on nearly every continent on this planet. IMO, it says ALOT when the Indy Pawn Shop takes the #1 Spot in the world for the rudest/shady dining experience, ever. Perhaps they have a new manager because as previously mentioned, neither of us recognized the woman behind the bar who waved off our server as we were ordering and walked away without explanation, without looking at us directly, without the slightest hint of an apology, and perhaps with a touch of bitterness and/or hostility. If she is the Manager, the Pawn Shop might not be a good fit for her. And vise versa. Bottom line: This strange experience changed our thoughts about The Pawn Shop and we wont be returning for some time, if ever frankly. And since my wife shared our story with both her parents last night, they wont be going either. And they both meet friends there on occasion so this story will cascade across our small network. Side bar: the cocktail I ordered was the worst Old Fashioned I've tasted in 41 years. Looking back now at everything as a whole, I shouldn't be surprised. Tasted like well bourbon, not what I ordered, and was lacking simple syrup, no cherry, and the slice of orange in it looked like an animal had half eaten it. I took a few sips, had my wife try it, and left it on our table (with a 40% tip). read more

It's a seat yourself establishment, so don't be waiting for a hostess to seat you at the front. Anything "breaded" I was told they're known for, and they haven't disappointed yet. One of my new favorite places for casual fare with a neighborhood vibe. We visited on a Sunday and grabbed seats at the bar. We were created by Brian, the friendly owner who was tending bar/training a new bartender. They have a handful of beers on tap, so we ordered 2 Daredevil Lift-Offs. They go for $4.25 a pint, which is the lowest price I've seen in the area! I definitely enjoyed my meal - I believe it was a special - 3 cheeseburger sliders with caramelized onions. I don't see it on the actual menu. They have a handful of specialty tenderloins - my partner got the Buffalo-style tenderloin and it was phenomenal. After shopping at the Backyard Birds store next door, that employee recommended stopping for lunch at Pawn Shop Pub as a good, neighborhood cafe/pub. The place didn't look too promising with lots of faded paint on the exterior, but the lot was in good condition and the ramp up to the entrance was in good repair. I entered (there are two doors on the south side and one on the east) to a pub with a central U-shaped bar (open to the kitchen) with stool seating and a row of booth/tables on all sides of the bar. The interior was festively decorated for the holidays as well as having a sports theme. Lots of TVs all tuned (silently) to ESPN. I grabbed a spot at the bar and was greeted and asked if I needed a menu. I did and while looking through, I heard one of the waitresses mention a daily special to one of the folks seated behind me. I decided to go with the special which included a cup of beer cheese soup (& crackers) and 1/2 breaded tenderloin (with chips). The wait was very brief and soon I was enjoying my meal. The soup had diced potato in the cheesy soup. Not especially thick, but still hearty. (I passed on the crackers.) The tenderloin was literally cut in half, not just a half portion of meat on a bun. I really enjoyed the flavor where all the toppings I ordered where in every bite. The place seemed to have a bunch of regulars that knew the staff by name. Kind of a quiet place with conversation murmuring instead of blaring tv's/music. The crowd was definitely weighted towards older folks. I got my bill after tax and it was just over $7! Pawn Shop Pub is pathetic. Unless you enjoy an unkept building which is unclean as well. The service is slovenly and lacking. Usually I wouldn't paint such a wide stroke but in this case it exists. We had potato skins and it took over an hour to get them. The Pawn Shop embraces a "cancel " culture vibe if your not of their ilk. The immaturity of a woke young adult wait-staff is sad, but worse was the mature staff having a temper tantrum slamming their hands on the bar and yelling at customers who dared ask to talk to a non-existent manager. First time stopping in today! We had great service once we got to the table. Our waitress while not talkative, made sure that we had everything we needed and check back often to see if we needed anything. My food was pub food not great but not bad. The pub needs an update but what's a city without an old school place that's been there for years?!? I would definitely go back. It's the closest thing I've had to Detroit's native Coney Island. I haven't been very much during Covid, but every time I go I think to myself that this is still my favorite bar in Indy. They seriously have the best barfood around! My friends and I have never gotten anything that tasted bad. And if you're not in the mood for barfood and want something healthier, their pub platter is delicious. You get your choice of meat (I always choose blackened fish), cottage cheese, boiled egg, tomatoes, and fruit (usually orange slices). It's filling and super tasty. Another plus is the prices. Originally, I was headed to Twenty Taps to try something new. Not knowing the area, I had no idea the area was so densely populated. No parking, tons of people, lots of noise and traffic... not my scene. So I kept driving. I drove right past this little restaurant that looked questionable and, being a foodie, noticed it immediately. Set back off the road, it carries an entirely different vibe and appearance than anything near my initial destination and it had numerous vehicles in the parking lot. So, I turned around and came on back. Super glad I did. Outside of almost gettin blown over by the wind, I walked in and immediately felt cozy. People are here, spread into intimate groups of two or four. Though everyone is conversing among themselves, its still quiet with super chill vibes. It's not dressy and fancy, its welcoming and homey. Service was great and I appreciated the knowledge offered by the gentleman who was the bartender at the time. They do not have craft beers and not that many options in the few select craft bottled options they offer. In fact, its so minimal that I settled for a Mimosa (pictured, $3.50 on Sundays). I rarely drink anything other than a good craft beer. But, again, options were minimal. However, they have plenty of cocktail options, the full bar allows for the creation of whatever you're in the mood for, and beer such as Bud Light, Coors Light, and so forth. The menu is light, proving great options from burgers, salads, tenderloin, sandwhiches, and all the good comfort food such as mozzarella sticks or fried mushrooms. I settled for a bacon cheese burger, cooked medium, with tater tots and ranch. Tots: Supurb. Crispy, crunch, and light. Ties a local restaurant in Nashville, TN for the first place tot experience in my life. Ranch: Yummy! Just classic buttermilk ranch. The burger. Omg. Amazing. If you're looking for a high quality, well flavored and cooked burger, but not all bougie (like Wagyu beef), then this is the place for you. Just... trust me. I hate grilled burger buns. Great little dive bar! No frills, just a laid back atmosphere with a bunch of regulars. They have a nice sized patio with music and lights for day and nighttime enjoyment. Pawn shop pub is that classic dive bar but with better food. We each had the tenderloins with their tater tots. The tenderloins are huge and full of flavor. They have a delicious breading and they have multiple styles you can choose from. We also split and order or their poppers. They were incredible and filled with a chipotle cream cheese rather than the plain kind. It gave it a nice extra boost of flavor. They have a wide variety of beers and drink specials with plenty of TVs to watch games on, or sit outside it that's what your feelin. The staff is friendly and the food came quick! Really disappointed in my order today. I've been going to this restaurant since the early 80s and now an acquaintance owns it and I'm friendly with his sister. I ordered a sandwich that I've always ordered in the past, The Water Buffalo. Yummy cream cheese and sprouts. I had checked the Google menu as the menu wouldn't come up on their website. This sandwich was unrecognizable. It was large and clunky, you couldn't pick it up. Could have been cut it in half but they couldn't have, it was so bulky. There were mushrooms in it that were huge and round, how could anyone eat that? I called and the waitress that I picked up my sandwich from said, well we don't use sprouts anymore. The veg in it was so large and thick, a total mess. She said I'm sorry and that was it. Pawn Shop Pub was well on its way to a rare 1-star rating from me, a sure sign that things weren't going particularly well after my first few minutes inside the former Long John Silvers turned local pub just west of the corner of 54th & Keystone Avenue in what is often called SoBro, that area of Indy just south of Broad Ripple Avenue that is more working class and less hipster, more stoned than intoxicated. I'd long wanted to check out Pawn Shop Pub, though despite my general state of independence as a wheelchair user I had a strong feeling that the space wouldn't exactly be wheelchair friendly. For the record, I was pretty much right. Pawn Shop has its own parking lot and the remnants of what used to be disabled parking remain, though the more traditional spots have been set aside. Being an old Long John Silvers, Pawn Shop does have a pretty appropriate curb cut with a grab rail that would be kindly described as in disrepair. There's two entrances, per the usual LJS design, but the only one a wheelchair could possibly enter would be on the left (west) side of the building. As you enter, you're immediately in an area with a large bar area in the middle along with rows of tables and half-booths to the left, right and alongside the front of the restaurant. It's a tight fit, though they do offer some outdoor options that are roomier. Back to the problems. As I arrived, a party was leaving right near the front of the pub. It was a perfect spot for a wheelchair and they, the party, actually moved one of the chairs so I could have their space. I saw a couple servers, but waited. I waited some more. I kept waiting. After what had been 15-20 minutes, I'd still not gotten as much as an acknowledgement when the server, whose name won't be mentioned out of courtesy, came up to the table and looked at the bill. She got this confused look, most likely because she hadn't registered I was a new party and the old party didn't have anyone in a wheelchair. She then proceeds to hand me my bill...before I'd been acknowledged, before I'd ordered and before I'd eaten or had a drink of anything. While I'm not big on clearing up someone else's work confusion, I didn't really want to pay someone else's bill so I quickly let her know that the previous party had left. She took the bill, whose it was I have no idea as the other party had left their bill with payment, and went to get something to clean the table. Did I mention she stopped to talk at another table? Twice? After things calmed down, they did in fact improve to the point that a 1-star rating was no longer warranted. They do carry iced tea, a huge plus, and their menu is largely traditional bar and grill food. I've been informed they have a strong breaded tenderloin, though I was in a burger mood. They had a special today of a cheeseburger with fries for $5.95, a decent value considering the usual cheeseburger is that price and it comes with chips (fries are an extra $2+). I was also grateful that when I ordered a plain burger, she gave me the special price anyway. The price overall was just over $8. I was pleasantly surprised. Without the special, I'd have likely ordered fries anyway and had a price of $10-11. I'd still say that's solid pricing. The burger was good, not great, with the fries being a rather modest order. They were crinkle-cut, which always sort of makes me smile for some reason. I got my always desired refill, though I was a touch disappointed not to get offered another one before I left. The atmosphere in Pawn Shop is on the loud side with the tight quarters leading to a sense of the space feeling very busy. It works for a bar and grill, though I doubt it's a place I'll frequent very often since I tend to be alone and I tend to like to relax and read. I initially thought that maybe the server was a tad overwhelmed, though I quickly caught on that she's simply a bit scattered. I don't mean that as an insult...I just have a feeling she may have been confused at the beginning simply because she leans toward confused. Pawn Shop Pub is a bit of a dive, though it's a relaxed vibe and you can tell quite a few folks are regulars. I have a feeling if I became a regular that I'd likely feel a lot more comfortable there. Instead, a really rough start that almost led me to leave turned into a decent meal, average service and a really good price. I doubt I'll return, but I don't regret going. read more

Went there for lunch today - food took forever & when I asked the waitress where our food was and told her we were at the point where we probably needed to take our food to go - she touched our appetizer plate and said "well, clearly, I put your food order in because you got this, right?"
