First time back since they reopened after fire. I definitely missed it while it was closed. And if possible, to sushi got even better since reopening! We shared multiple rolls and everything tasted very fresh. The server wad friendly and attentive and we didn't have to wait for a table. Can't wait to go back.

I came here during happy hour and there was almost no one around. The decor wasn't terrible, it was minimal to try to cover the 20 tables that were around. The service was average. The chicken karrage was overcooked and very tough to eat. The veggie tempura is more deep fried than it should be, as i tempura is usually a lightly batter item. It's also a little bitter which makes me question how long it's been around. The caterpillar roll had a very small amount of eel in it. The pizza roll is an interesting concept of a roll with fish as an appitizer, but without the sauce, the fish being baked dries up and eating it is tough. The Philadelphia roll looks like the salmon has been sitting in water. Don't get me started on how difficult it is to park with a tree behind one of the slots. I'm sure this is a great place to go if you are drunk and wanna get more alcohol with chicken yakitori, but my experience was made me not want to come back.

WOW.... pleasantly surprised this restaurant has been closed for a while I've never gone to it but i past tried it... Great happy hour 50% off all week long 4:00 to 6:00 p.m...... everything was a high quality and fresh as can be not to mention the affordable price... whole menu is available to order even the lunch boxes at any time of the day I chose the San Box... teriyaki cinnamon egg rolls sashimi then I got the 50% off mixed tempura plus 50% it'll mommy bowl.. The lunch box came with a nice salad and miso soup... okay when I said fresh I mean there was nothing frozen The edamame was fresh The sashimi was not frozen fresh high quality almost double cut thick and two pieces of teriyaki salmon... it was more than I could ask for even their hot to you tasted legit and oh yeah miso soup was spot on... He sure didn't cut any corners with their quality of food both in freshness and taste

The lunch bento box was awesome. So glad this place is back in action. I got the chicken katsu which was super crispy and the California rolls which were good as well. I was surprised by how much food came with the bento. Definitely will be back!

A really great spot. Quality fish, large variety and creativity of rolls, super affordably priced, and incredibly friendly service. 10/10 come here every time I'm back home.

Pretty decent late night sushi in PB. We ordered few appetizers and sushi rolls and we enjoyed all of them, but the edamame and mushroom miso were my absolute favorite. Tables were a little greasy and I did get the wrong mochi that I ordered, but we did walk in after 8PM (they close at 10). Will definitely come back earlier in the day and I'm sure it'll be an even better experience.

I came here for the first time today, and I heard they reopened last week. I ordered sashimi and sushi, and I was amazed at how fresh they were. I'd love to come back again if I get the chance.

Stick to the appetizers if you go on mon/tues discount day. Fish is not that fresh. The server gave us the wrong tea, vegetable instead of mixed tempura and made a stink when I told her we wouldn't eat/pay for the albacore nigiri. Might go back for some gyoza and edamame because it's a good deal.

Quick Service. Order was messed up but did not have to pay for the mess up roll and the correct roll was brought out fast. Food was decent and prices were average.

I love this place it's small and quaint and not too busy! The service is good, the waitresses are very attentive and sweet! The sushi is good, fresh and is presented well! I love their salad it's aways crisp and full of veggies with a delicious ginger dressing. They have specials everyday of the week on food and drinks, my favorite days are Wednesday and Thursday - 30% off all rolls and half off selected appetizers!

I took some time to decide if I wanted to give this place 4 or 5 starts. Ultimately went with the 5 - not because this place is fine dining, but because they definitely over deliver on what you'd expect. In my opinion this place is the best deal in PB. Monday and Tuesday you get 50% off most rolls (see menu pictures, everything with a *) - and then 30% off all roles Wednesday & Thursday, and even deals on the weekend. These deals even apply to to-go! Plus you can't beat $1 sake bombs. The place is cute inside, maybe not a first date location - but nice enough. I used to work in a sushi restaurant and can be somewhat picky about quality, but I was very impressed. Everything from fried rolls to fresh sashimi was absolutely delicious. For sure my new local go to when I'm craving.

Zen 5 sushi is an affordable sushi place when you need that quick sushi fix. Of course you aren't going to the get best quality food, but you get what you pay for. I've dined here a few times usually and slower weekdays and service has always been good. They have some sort of special everyday. Today was Tuesday, half off select rolls. It did the trick and fulfilled my sushi craving. The presentation of the sushi is also nice and cute. The interior is also nice as well.

I had debated whether to reserve upstairs or downstairs and ultimately chose upstairs and I was happy with that decision for the two of us, as it was a bit more relaxing and I liked the decor. There was however, a large table of about 8 people in the center of the room that were quite noisy. Downstairs definitely had a more 'hustle bustle' atmosphere with large booths and a long sushi bar. (There is also some outdoor 'Covid' style seating). We ordered sake, a couple of sushi rolls and negiri. They were kind enough to supply a complimentary birthday ice-cream dessert with a candle. Service was very attentive and as we passed the sushi bar on the way out, staff behind the bar waived goodbye. Parking: We were able to park near First and Laurel streets for free on a Saturday afternoon. A very classy sushi place. I definitely recommend a visit for a special occasion or perhaps if visiting nearby Balboa Park or the Old Globe Theater. Helpful?

I ended up asking for lemonade too to mix with my soju since I rarely drink and do not like the taste of alcohol lol. The food was absolutely delicious, I wouldn't have changed anything about our meal! We left satisfied and were so impressed with the sashimi variety we were served. We were first to enter and it was clear immediately that omakase is this restaurants institution; delicate lighting that highlighted the bar that separated diner and chef, clean lines everywhere, and just overall a beautiful place. The theme of Sushi MARU is truly attention to detail, and that extends from arrival, to service, to, of course, the food. Staff were incredibly attentive and easy to talk to, including the chefs. The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. The pacing was just right, and each course was presented simply yet beautifully. I truly enjoyed this experience and give it my highest possible accolades! There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Highly recommend!

We ordered takeout, and the food was packaged well!…read more We ordered the: -Sashimi champloo ($31.95): This had twelve pieces of prime cuts of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and chef's choice. Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.
