Great local hangout attached to a motel -- superb New Mexican food and friendly, attentive, service. Best Mexican shrimp cocktail (think jumbo shrimp in ceviche), red chiles con carne (called "Chili Lovers"), rib steak with Chile relleno, and carne adovado are all must haves. Saved my rear end! I was the "great leader" of this family expedition into New Mexico and until our visit to Pecos Trail Cafe for a late dinner, I had failed miserably in satisfying the entire group's culinary desires! We got there about 30 minutes before closing time and to my relief they sat us down for dinner. The gentleman who was serving us was very polite and good at helping us decide. He also looked very serious, but more on that later! We all ordered our meals, and to be honest I do not remember who ordered what, but I can tell you that my Mom tasted my dish and decided that she likes it a lot, so we swapped plates with me fully aware of the fact that she would not finish hers and I'd get to eat both mine and part of her dish! Very conniving, I admit! At the end of our meal, I, as I always do in Mexican restaurants, had to have my flan so we ordered a couple. My girlfriend who had passed on flan tried a spoon of mine and decided that she wanted one too. Remember the serious server of ours? Well, my girlfriend shyly told him that she had changed her mind and wanted a flan too, and he with a serious look on his face told her that unfortunately they were all out of flan now! However, as soon as my girlfriend facial expression started to change into a very sad one, he winked and let her know that he was just kidding! We all got a good laugh out of it. At the end everyone unanimously gave an enthusiastic thumbs up to our experience at Pecos Trail Cafe, so much so that we came back for brunch the next day and had another excellent meal there, and I lived to decide on a place to eat for another day. read more

We have been trying to work our way through many of the eateries in Santa Fe for years now and being the next one on our list The Pecos Trail Cafe did not disappoint. The spousal unit ordered the quesadilla plate with chicken and commented that it was one of the better quesadillas she has had. I chose the Las Vegas combination plate due to the chile relleno. The relleno was one of the more "authentic" ones I have eaten. The beef enchilada was pretty much okay. The red chile was on the mild side, but both were flavorful. Our waiter, Jorge, was a pleasure to interact with and very professional. Overall, the service was excellent. The rice and beans did not shine but both were tasty. The only thing left on my plate was the stem from the chile. Nearly a perfect lunch washed down with a Nut Brown Ale. read more

Went with a party of ten last Friday, live mariachi music from 6 to 8 pm. Entertainment is fabulous. The sangria was delicious, as was my partner's nut brown ale. Shrimp cocktail was good! Ate and drank every last drop. Enchiladas were good, loved tbe corn ball they serve on each plate. All 10 people in our party said they would go back...me too! read more

Happened to be working in Santa Fe at the hospital and found this nice little place as I was looking for lunch. Stopped in and was pleasantly greeted. Immediately sat down. Drink came quick. I asked what their specialty was. It's called a Carne Something. It's basically chunks of steak in a red chili sauce/stew. It was delicious. Came out quick. Took longer to write this review than it took to get my food. Great portion size. Great price. read more

It doesn't look like much when you drive past but this is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Santa Fe. It is family-owned and each dish is prepared flawlessly. The chile relleno plate is particularly delicious! Jorge, the owner, and his family are so gracious, and he makes all of the food himself. We can't recommend this restaurant more highly! read more

We grabbed some chicken fajitas to go which didn't turn out to be a great meal due to the quality. I called in and the manager asked that we come back in and get a meal on the house. When we came in we chose to have the lamb tacos which was extremely flavorful. We will go back despite the off night they had since we think it was a fluke. read more

This place is a must-visit for Santa Fe. I came here after working as an RN at the local hospital and was immediately transported to a better place after work. The staff and owners were so welcoming and friendly and the food was amazing. Very creative and diverse flavors in one dish (Shrimp Veracruzanos) that seemed to come from a unique perspective. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, but not fancy or uptight. Seems like a local favorite. Definitely a favorite for this travel nurse and I will come back! read more

We showed up a little late, but the staff still treated us like royalty. I have never tasted anything quite as delicious as the birria platter from this restaurant. Food is really good. Customer service is great! I inadvertently mis-ordered and they didn't charge me for it. I felt bad but couldn't eat the extra food. I recommend this restaurant for the super friendly staff and food that will keep you coming back. Try the enchiladas with red chili sauce and sweet corn cakes that are addictive. I modified the three color enchilada plate to include a veggie enchilada with red chile instead of beef enchilada and I liked it the best. the other enchilada was chicken with green chile but it was bland and had diced chicken which I found odd. the worst item IMO was the cheese enchilada. definitely lacked cheese on the inside but was covered in liquid cheese that was just awful, again IMO. Entered a clean restaurant and was seated within minutes. The staff was friendly and sat us at a clean table. Food was served rather quickly but tasted fresh and hot! The flavor of the food was on point for NM dishes and even though only two of the dishes were served with sopapilla's the staff brought two additional ones without a cost. What a terrific place. I've been searching for fried ice cream that compares to what was served at Jose Muldoon's, a college staple in Colorado Springs, for ages. The version served at Pecos Trail is as close as I've found in decades of serious research Of course I couldn't just go for dessert, so first I ordered a chicken quesadilla. It was also perhaps the best I've ever had. The service was efficient and welcoming. I was greeted with a warm hello and given a fond goodbye as I entered and departed. This little restaurant was a lovely surprise. Everything was amazing. Service was seamless, cheerful and professional. The food was equal to any high end meal we have had recently, prepared and served perfectly. We shared the Mar y Tierra and marveled at the perfectly cooked scallops and subtle, spicy cream sauce.
