Ok. reading some of the reviews here from straights, it's obvious your cheapskates and the only reason you wanted to go in this bar is to get a stiff drink that is inexpensive. Won't hold that against you. Pecs is what it is, a small bar with several pool tables, outdoor patio for smoking. Depending on which day could be crowded or empty. Sure its a gay bar but that only means we don't have to worry about someone making a comment if we put our hands together and sing Kum Ba Ya once in a while. Seriously, everybody is welcome but the more the merrier so coming here alone and straight, expect what you get. Come with friends and enjoy the atmosphere. And Marisol's comment that Ruggy threatened them to come back here if they don't win their kickball game, let me just say it might actually be more scary to say that you all will hang out at the Flame or Numbers during women's night. Cool dive bar. Their happy hour is $3 wells and double for a buck more...double please on my vodka and pineapple. Tall glass too...like 16oz or so. The drink was pretty stiff by the way. Needed some water as well to balance my liquid intake. Bartender dude was superfriendly and had no shirt on. He called me babe...um I guess..thanks dude...well this a gay bar. Everyone was friendly. Nice atmosphere. There's a separate room called the "man cave" and I guess you can smoke there with a second bar inside. They have 2 pool tables, an ATM, jukebox, darboard, a breathalyzer machine and a pinball machine. They have several tv's as well. Can't lock the bathroom, you just need to piss and move on. Overall, it was kinda dark, some good music. What's the deal with these teddy bears everywhere? Someone has to explain that one to me. read more

Its 2 stars not 3 because of the clientele, not the staff. While this is a known gay bar, I am amazed at the chilly reception bordering on rudeness of the patrons here when a woman walks in. I know I'm a woman but come ON a girl has to get her drink on too sometimes! hell, even the bouncer carded us after letting a stream of guys in unchecked... The bar has a big front room with tables and a pool table and darts, but the real action is on the patio outside. The bartenders are attentive and friendly and pour a pretty strong drink. A very friendly gay bear and leather bar located away from the Hillcrest drag. Staff is friendly and makes everyone feel welcome. This bar used to be friendlier and a lot more cozier but now that the outside patio has opened the bar and patio can be filled to over capacity on the weekends (leave the patio to use the head and you will have to wait in line until someone leaves to rejoin your party on the patio.) This was one of my first hangouts in SD and I still go here with friends to play darts on occasion. It just doesn't feel the same since the management changed a year or so ago but everything must change. Parking can be challenging during peak bar hours as you are competing with local residences. read more

You always treat us right ...pecs. You always have a great vibe , decent music, good bartenders, stiff drinks and good looking patrons. My boyfriend and I always enjoy coming to this establishment when visiting America's finest city. It never lets us down when we are looking for some fun and it's never as pretentious as some other gay watering holes. Love the diversity and the lack of attitude. It's just a chill bar. It does sit away from the rest of the hillcrest bars, but conveniently sits on the corner of a busy street. My boyfriend, my best friend and I took advantage of the lyft electric scooters that adorn the north park streets of San Diego. It was a great way to bar hop especially since pecs was a bit far from the first bar we began our gay north park adventure. Pecs always has a nice vibrant crowd and their drinks are always nice and stiff. They have a great covered patio that allows smokers to light up including my boyfriend who enjoys smoking his menthol tobacco sticks. The place never charges and welcomes all. Gracias Pecs! Bartenders Brad and Eloy, are helping me start my Sunday off right! I love the outside bar/patio and the pool tables inside. It doesn't hurt that I can control the jukebox from my phone. I finally made it to Pecs since they have reopened and the experience was great. You now enter off the side street and have your temperature taken before you enter. It is obvious they took a lot of time and effort to make the back patio look nice. All the tables were socially distanced. Their menu is pretty typical bar food: burgers, tacos, wings, etc. The burger I ordered was good. More importantly the drinks were strong and the server was very attentive. So glad to see Pecs is back in business. I'll definitely be back soon! read more

Okay, so first a few words from my mom, which she asked me to share: "I can't give enough credit to this business and their employees. We were walking near Pecs Tuesday evening when a very disturbed man started harassing us. He seemed harmless as far as we knew but was definitely following us and wouldn't leave us alone for blocks yelling in our faces. A Pecs employee came out and escorted us to a safe place while we contacted police. Trevor (I believe this was the bouncer's name) was so helpful and humble. Thank you SO VERY MUCH! We proceeded into the patio to de-stress and enjoy a few beers. Cool patio, friendly staff , and great food!" For my part I've been coming to Pecs every now and then for many years, and have always loved the bar and its staff. Their new patio is really nice (I hope they keep it even when all this is over) and the food is really great! I had the tacos and was pretty blown away by how good they were. Pecs did a soft opening (practice run) last night with serving food. It was great seeing our favorite bartenders and supporting our favorite bar. The food was awesome. Not impressed. I was with a friend on the Sunday of Pride and it was 1:05am. Website said they were open till 2am. We wanted to see if our friend was inside. Pecs is the true definition of friendly neighborhood 'hot spot.' Pool tables - CHECK! Dart boards - CHECK! Kick-ass MP3 searchable juke box - CHECK! Cheap drinks - CHECK! Friendly, fun, unpretentious - CHECK, CHECK, double CHECK! There's something going on @ Pecs every night, though Thursdays-Sunday are usually the most popular. Free pizza on Sunday nights sums up the reason this place simply rocks (...and a few slices to soak up the booze certainly come in handy before the drive home.) Went here yesterday after our first Kickball loss (sorry everyone for not catching the ball that one time : / ) Anywho...DD #2 and I got *kinda* lost getting here, because there's no garish sign telling you where it is, I know I've passed by it multiple times and HWMNBN never failed to point it out when we did. If you've never been there before, it's on University (a few doors down from F Street- so if you need some kinky gear, hey- you're in luck!). On our way in, we passed by a guy who had 2 chihuahuas and one was an absolutely adorable puppy that rolled on his back when I pet him. I'm a sucker for cute dogs. Been coming to this bar for over 13 yrs. I like the laid back atmosphere, and the fact that there are lots of middle aged guys there like me - love the bears. But, for the life of me I can't understand how the bartenders keep their jobs. Just the most crankie, crotchety guys behind a bar that I've ever seen. I am always nice and always tip, but DAMN if you hate being behind the bar so much... go somewhere else! All of my friends and I hate even asking for a drink because there's going to be some snide comment or attitude to deal with. Just last week I was there with two friends and one of them said, "I really want another drink, but I don't want to deal with those guys." He ended up nursing his melting ice instead. Dropped in here during a bike ride booze down University ave. I did not know much about Pecs. All I knew was that given my slender stature, I probably would not fit in here, but that did not stop me. I wanted beer. The place was cool and down to earth, with cheap booze. What I liked is that the pitchers have an ice block in them to keep the beer extra cold. Granted, I would never let my beer sit idle in a pitcher long enough to get near room temperature without drinking it, but if I did, this pitcher would make sure it stayed cold! read more

There was once a part of me that fantasized about being overwhelmed by shameless and unrelenting advances from bears. Then I visited pecs and realized that I'd have to go to Eagle for that. Pecs is surprisingly respectable, until you see the bathroom. My straight friend went to Pecs with some of my gays one night. Once we were inside he turned to me and said "Oh, this is a different kind of gay bar". Sister, you said a mouthful. Pecs is most definitely a man's bar. There have been a great many occasions when I was the only woman in the joint. No matter, I've always had a blast and met some really awesome folks. Bears, cubs, twinks, tops, bottoms, couples and tricks- all walk through the doors here. Prepare to get hammered on strong and cheap drinks. *My only gripe is this: waiting in line for the ladies room. Now fellas, I know this is a "man's bar" but proper gay bar bathroom protocol should be followed regardless. If a woman at a man's bar needs to use the ladies room then she should be able to cut to the front of the line provided there are no other ladies waiting. I'm not bitching about you pissing on the seats, or the floor, or getting head in the ladies room- I could care less. It's about principle people! read more

I remember it being a dark, dungeony, dive bar with lots of tall, burly men in leather. Talk about bear heaven. I have no idea what the drink prices were like, but I think I had a beer here. There's no need to feel homophobic if you're straight here 'cause you totally don't get that kind of vibe here. Great bar with friendly staff and customers alike. I first landed here last Thursday and returned on Friday and last night (Sunday). Lot's of middle-aged bears (like myself) and younger dudes who are into 'em :) The service is great, and the bartenders are both sexy and helpful -- so far I've met Eloy, Brian, Eddie & Tommy, and can't say anything but good things about them. The bar back dude (Trevor) working on weekend nights is jaw-dropping gorgeous.....waited around the bar until I was way too buzzed to see when he'd take his shirt off. Poor dude was getting eye fucked by about a half a dozen guys sitting around the bar drooling at him, I'm sure he gets that a lot. If you're a smoker then you've found your bar. There's a huge back patio with full bar service and flat-screen televisions playing sports. The patio is truly ventilated and outdoors, although it's covered and heated with propane (I believe). As a non-smoker I was totally unaffected by hanging out here -- and I consider myself to be sensitive to cigarette smoke. Apparently Pecs picks up after the Sunday daytime beer bust at the Hole is over. The rowdier "not ready for it to end" crowd comes to Pecs and turns Sunday night into a 3rd weekend night. Total fun time. Parking around the neighborhood blows; but you really don't want to drive from here anyway -- the drinks are strong and you're gonna want to hang out here until you're way too buzzed to be driving. It's just a short walk back to downtown through Balboa Park (took me 40 minutes from Pecs to my downtown hotel); and an even shorter walk up to Hillcrest. read more
