Although I don't drink coffee every day, I found myself here a few times this weekend. You can say we were Re-Peet's Customers, I crack myself up on cheesy jokes and get my caffeine on at Peet's! I really like the customer service here. People are friendly, even the other customers are friendly. Lines are never too long and there is always at least one parking spot. I get my large iced coffee with room for cream and found out that Peet's roasts all their beans in Alameda. So now I'm wondering if that neighborhood in Alameda smells like roasted Kona beans or Major Dickenson's Blend. Either way, it sounds delicious and love to support the local businesses. read more

I like Peets. When given the choice I will always choose Peets over Starbucks. I had a work meeting at this Peets last week. It was my first time there. I found it easily but parking was another story. The parking lot was a full. I did find street parking nearby. This is a small Peets and all the seats were taken at 1 pm on a Tuesday. Luckily, it was a lovely day out and we were able to sit at one of the few tables outside. The outside seating would be better if it weren't at the corner of a busy, loud intersection. Oh well. I've started coming here when walking my 2 dogs. I tie them up outside while I run in for a small caffe mocha. Then I actually have the energy to not get dragged by the 2 little furballs on the walk back home. Service is fast and efficient - but boy is it crowded on Saturday mornings. It's all good though ... it's Saturday morning ... you are in El Cerrito ... do you REALLY have somewhere important to be ... yeah, didn't think so. This is the Peets near El Cerrito Plaza and it's busy traffic and parking-wise around here. My advice is to drive over to the Plaza and walk over, but watch yourself 360 the entire time. The inside of this Peets is a little small, which makes seating and the coffee lines "interesting". It's not Staff's fault and I usually find them helpful, friendly, and almost Solano Peets-like in their Barista knowledge. In any event, I usually take my java to go. Been coming here since its opening. Changed over the years. Lots of overturn in employees and management. Inconsistent with orders. My mobile app order was not made to my specification. Whats the point of spending the time to customize my order if it is not going to be followed. Today both of my order were not made correctly. No need to get into details. Coffee was strong though. The perfectly poured (flat) almond milk latte! I have been ordering the same beverage from any Peet's coffee I may stumble into for the last 3 years. Where Few have succeeded this shop is definitely now on this list, as I stated perfectly poured! Not only was I impressed with my visit to this shop, and my beverage made with love. I am a USPS employee and go to Peet's in el Cerrito Plaza at least 4 times a week, always at 6 am. Gave this place too many tries over the years, always out of something and the coffee doesnt taste too good usually, today they were out of stock but left the item up for display, only found out after paying, the scone i did get was dry, tasted old and not fresh and had a bunch of crumbs on top of it like it had been tossed around for a while, the cold brew coffee i got was really watered down. Two stars instead of one because the coffee is, of course - awesome / strong... and they are a locally-based company (started in Berkeley, CA). The layout does make things confusing; and darn they dropped the "Solano" blend. The inside is clean enough - but the outside of this location is usually disgusting. The benches are covered in food waste; I am not even sure what that goo is underneath; I think some of it was glowing in the dark the other night. Please rinse those things once and a while (hot water should be easy to locate in a coffee shop). I am convinced there is a class in business school about the outside appearance of a business which probably at least implies that it should be clean and sanitary - especially if you serve food and those benches are an extension of your dining room where guests sit outdoors. Almost the same issue with a near-by Peet's as well. Dang, what a shame because the product itself is outstanding - you shouldn't make your guests sit in filth while they enjoy your fine coffees / teas / pastries. I can't comment on the customer service other than they have always seemed to work hard - inside the store. read more

I have been drinking Peets coffee since they opened their doors. In the '70's, it was a cult-like following, waiting in line for an hour at the only store in town, on Vine Street in Berkeley, just to buy a bag of beans. Now there are stores all over the country. You can buy Peets in the grocery store and Costco, albeit not very much like the original one. I have shopped at many locations, but the store on San Pablo Ave. in El Cerrito is the worst. They are unfriendly, unorganized and slow. I avoid this location unless I have to go there for convenience. BLAH! read more

This is a busy Cafe with super friendly staff. The manager (Darius) is always very welcoming and his team always has lots of great energy. The lines tend to be long (especially on the weekends) but they move pretty quick. The only downside to this cafe is the horrible (and tiny) parking lot. It's always over crowded and stressful getting in and out. TIP: park across the street in the parking lot by Macaroni grill and avoid the madness of this parking lot. read more

Hrmph... This location granted has much less foot traffic than others, seeing as there are two starbucks locations across the street at the plaza and two stands that sell coffee also, but on this side of san pablo ave, peets is your best bet. The staff here is very polite and nice. Not super chatty, but still very polite. They did seem to go a bit slower than the Shattuck peets, but that location probably has to be faster to cater to the much larger clientele base. This one is very quiet and has very limited seating, so it would be a nice place to get some work done if you happen to snag a seat. read more

Lately, I've been having a serious gripe with Peet's that noone else seems to be talking about, and I can't figure out why. But here it is. I love cappuccino's. I love the taste of Peet's capuccino's...when its done right. Made properly, its heaven. But lately, 50% of the time that I get my large capuccino, the foam is made with TOO MUCH AIR. The result is that I get in 5 sips of my $4 cappuccino...and then its finished. Over. I'm tipping my cup upside down thumping the bottom. But I'm left with nothing else but a cup full of bath-bubble-like foam that has no volume to it, and a lot of resentment that I just paid $4 for a huge cup that had only 5 sips to it and a lot of anger that the coffee that I was looking forward to all day was over before it barely began. And it freakin' drives me crazy!!! I don't know if this is a reflection that Peet's is not properly training its baristas on how to make capuccino foam, or if its just the baristas at this location. I've since become reluctant to enter a Peet's for this very reason, which is a shame because I otherwise love their coffee. Just please train your baristas properly, for Peet's sake! read more

The Peets in my neighborhood looks just like the one on the website--oh right it's a chain!! Silly me...it was feeeling so personal and neighborhoody. It's approximately an 8 minute walk from where I could otherwise make my own cup with the beans I bought there, but often it's the thing to do- go there for coffee. My goodness- they have ecups and samples and random encounters with long lost friends and a better batch of breakfast pastries than any other coffee chain or location, even. Unfortunately for El Cerrito, the area around the Plaza is bursting with chain eateries and severely lacking of very many real, local restaurant choices. The coffee situation is the same way: your choices are Starbucks or this Peet's. Of the two, I would choose this place, but just barely. I have always liked the taste of Peet's better than Starbucks, but you probably already know the differences in flavors, so I won't take any more time to describe them. Peet's seems to have quicker service and is usually less crowded, meaning you're more likely to snag a table here than at Starbucks. Parking is adequate, but the small lot does get full at times (and will never compete with the huge lot at the Plaza). Even on my squeaky-tight budget, I manage to come to the Peet's Coffee and Tea at 9889 San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito nearly every day. The other day I was stranded near a Starbucks, and begrudgingly ordered a "bold" small drink (or whatever Starbucks' cutesy term for "small" is). It was thin as water! I have been so spoiled by the nice bold drinks at Peet's that anything else is weak to me. That being said, yes there are those who feel Peet's coffee is too strong. I call those folks "coffee dabblers". For you coffee purists, oh is this the coffee for you! I love the seasonal coffee drinks, though I often get my standard white chocolate mocha. The El Cerrito Peet's staff somehow always seem to remember that I only go for whip on top if I am ordering a large, but not if I am getting a small or medium. I also prefer half-ice with my iced drinks, and two teabags every time I get tea. No matter who is ringing me up, Peet's always gets my preferences right. The seating here can be at a premium, and there are a few "crazy" folks who come and go. But that's just how it is in the Berkeley area, and most patrons and certainly the staff are sane and pleasant. I met my roommate and both my best friends at this Peet's, and this is my go-to meeting location for both friendly and business visits. I like this place so much that I contacted the corporate office to praise the staff for their kind consideration of service dogs and their general awesomeness and professionalism. Especially after the change in management, things have been improving more and more. Love the new store remodel! Brings a more modernized look with pops of color (dark blue, but still) and cool wall art. Can get busy on weekday mornings since the Bart station is right across the street. This Peet's Coffee is probably the best thing ever happened to El Cerrito. Not because I'm a total coffee addict but the lines running out of the store and into the street is a sledgehammer hint that this place is popular. In my quest to avoid all things Starbucks while in NorCal, I find this Peet's very convenient (close to where I'm staying) and the baristas pretty friendly. The daily cup of coffee is relatively good but I noticed that my coffee was a bit on the weak side this morning. It's not the industrial strength that I'm used to. Has Peet's gone soft??? When I say Peet's coffee was a bit weak, that usually means it's stronger than Starbucks. This location gets very busy in the morning and it's sometimes difficult to find seating inside. The parking lot is a joke! You're better off parking on the street. And yet I return. What can I say...I love Peet's! read more

Been to this Peet's and other locations previously with no problems, but my husband and I just got back from our last Peet's run, and I am furious! I ordered a Vanilla Freddo since I am pregnant and have to limit/cut caffeine, and when the guy gave me my order, it looked brown. I've ordered this drink before at another location, and it was white and vanilla-ish like the vanilla frappucino they sell at Starbucks, so I politely asked him why this one was brown. He said something about some kind of chocolate spice in there that made it brown. I shrugged and took it, had a sip, and thought it tasted NOTHING like vanilla and an awful lot like coffee. At first I thought maybe it was just me, since I had just finished a chocolate chip cookie, so my husband and I left. I continued to sip a bit after we left, but I was still convinced he gave me something entirely different with caffeine in it. I gave it to my husband, and after several sips, he was like, "Yeah, I taste some vanilla, but I taste a lot of other stuff, too". We remembered that when the barista started making the drinks, he was holding two blenders and looked all confused for a moment, so I think he really did make a huge mistake. Instead of owning up to it and just fixing the order, he made up some excuse about adding some other extra spice. Thanks for lying to me, jerk. I'm not an idiot. Do you really think I wouldn't notice a difference between vanilla and something else? And THANKS for giving me something with caffeine in it. That's really helping my morning sickness, by the way. Love my Peets! I have been a fan for many years. This is the place for real coffee drinkers. (unlike the weak coffee from Starbucks) At least when you order a latte here it actually tastes like coffee instead of steamed milk with very little coffee flavor. Admittedly I stopped by this Peet's for the WIFI since I was in the area house-hunting. I was greeted by a sincerely friendly individual. I ordered a decaf coffee with room for milk. It wasn't quite brewed yet and they said it would only take a few minutes. During my brief wait, I noticed that all the employees were smiling and interacting warmly with each other. I've got to say that this is the friendliest coffee shop I've visited, whether Peet's or any other. And guess what, they actually left me room for milk - a common miss because people are usually automatic and do things out of routine than actual customer service. After making my order, eating half of my warmed up monkey roll, I notice hella names being called, but not my order. My light bulb went off and remembered , even though I paid for my order, my name was not asked. Was this the reason for the long waIt?? Love love love you Peet's. I wish you were as easily found as Starbucks. Because your regular brewed coffee is still rich and flavorful and strong! This location is fine. The baristas are good, efficient and nice. However, the parking here sucks! It's easier to park at El Cerrito Plaza and walk across San Pablo Ave to get here. Also, I was with a colleague at this location the other day and realized there are like maybe 2 expose electrical outlets in the whole place. So it's difficult to plug in if you want to use a tech device that needs charging. Boo on that.
