We came to Peg Leg Porker to dry their Memphis style ribs we heard lots about. When you step in you see all the trophies and awards they have won for their bbq. We ordered a half rack of ribs and a peach fried pie. The ribs were solid and the meat was fell off the bone with each bite or when pulling the individual ribs off the rack of ribs. The ribs weren't very tender which may have been due to the cut we got or maybe most of the fat was trimmed off during prep. Memphis style bbq uses a dry rub rather than wet. The rub at Peg Leg Porker was decent, but during our trip we tried another bbq restaurant called Martin's whose dry rub I prefer. The peach fried pie was solid, it reminded us of a toaster strudel. The service was quick as we got our food very fast. There is a lot of indoor seating and a good amount of outdoor seating as well. The noise level was moderate, which allows you to have a conversation with your party without having to yell. This was a short walk from our hotel, so an easy spot to pick especially since we eat a lot of BBQ. Nice outdoor seating on a large deck and lots of seating inside. The BBQ is on point...or peg? The ribs are a tremendous standout for all the BBQ places in town! Tender with layers of flavor. And all of the sides were that feel-good-homestyle-not-an-afterthought, particularly the mac n cheese, green beans, and potato salad. The koolaid pickles were interesting, and despite the color, really tasted more like a regular pickle. The yardbird a different BBQ chicken presentation but kinda just ok; it seems to be popular otherwise as they thought they were sold out to start. Sadly, the counter service could have been less aloof and uninterested, especially since that is about the only interaction you have with staff and with so many folks that come by as tourist looking to experience that "real TN BBQ" could been a bit more southern hospitality. It's the typical "TX style" BBQ joint, with many tables inside, concrete/cinder block walls, a walkup counter to place your order, and a soda fountain to fix your own drink. But they only serve pork and chicken here, no beef. I asked the lady at the cashier what was best and she suggested the pulled pork sandwich, which I got. I saw they had mac & cheese and asked her what she thought of it... she said it was great, so I got it. I got their fries, since they offered crinkled cut fries and I also got an order of their smoked/baked beans, as I love baked beans. The sandwich was amazing - 10 out of 10! The baked beans looked like they were watery and bland, but WOW, that flavor floored me... 11 out of 10! The mac & cheese looked and tasted like Velveeta Shells & Cheese - I wasn't impressed... 3/10. This was my second time at the Peg Leg Porker, and the BBQ here totally hits. We ordered the meat sampler, pimento cheese, Mac and cheese, and the bbq beans. The pimento was outstanding, great taste and texture. The beans were great, smoky and definitely unique. The Mac and cheese was creamy and they use pasta shells. As for the meats....the star was definitely the pulled pork. It was tender and very tasty. The chicken was very juicy and cooked to perfection, and when paired with their BBQ it was perfect. The sausage was great as well. The only knock I had was with the ribs. They had a little too much dry rub. The parts with little to no rub were amazing. Very tender and the meat just melted off the bone. The cashier wasn't the nicest n most helpful, if not for that I'd definitely give it 5 stars. Peg Leg Porker in Nashville was a solid find. I actually came across it on Nashville's own recommendation site and it lived up to the hype for the most part. We ordered the Yardbird Platter with mac and cheese and potato salad. Coming from Texas, my expectations for BBQ are pretty high. The chicken really delivered. It was smoked beautifully, had a great smoky flavor, and was not dry at all. The seasoning they put on it is subtle but it really brings everything together and makes the chicken stand out. The sides were a bit more hit or miss for me. The mac and cheese is a shelled chipotle mac and cheese. I get that they are going for something a little different, but it missed the mark in terms of that rich cheesy and salty comfort flavor I usually look for in mac and cheese. It was fine, just not what I'd call great. The potato salad really comes down to preference. It is a white, vinegar based potato salad instead of the yellow mustard style that a lot of Texas BBQ joints serve. That kind of tangy, mayo and vinegar profile just is not my favorite, so it was not really my thing. If you are someone who prefers a classic yellow mustard potato salad, I would probably suggest skipping the potato salad here. The sauce, on the other hand, was a nice surprise. It is definitely a different take on BBQ sauce than what I am used to in Texas, but it paired with the chicken really well and tied the plate together. I found myself in Nashville with lunch on my mind and time in my side. So many bookmarks I have in Nashville that it is hard to choose where to go. I must have well over a hundred here. I've been stalking Mr.Bringle and his BBQ joint for a while now. BBQ was the bookmark winner for this day! Excited to arrive and dig into this man's que, I headed straight to the counter and ordered the Combo Platter. It had all the meats he had available I think. I wanted to try it all and knew there was no way I was knocking this out by myself. It had pulled pork, a half chicken, a jalapeño cheese sausage, and a half rack of ribs. I misread the website I guess and thought it came with sides, so I ordered beans and mac as a side. When she charged me I was confused and she set me straight that the "combo" did not include sides. I removed them as they would have just taken belly space that I did not have to spare. I added a bottle of hot bbq sauce and white bbq sauce to my order and paid. It's funny to me that they prompt for a tip, even when they offer no assistance at all. Get your drink, get your utensils, get your sauce, find a table, get your ass back up to get your food when they scream your name. Better not get caught slipping or they will shout at you on the loudspeaker. That part of this equation sucks. When you're done you'll also need to sort your own dishes and trash as well. Seems fair... I missed my name and they screamed at me over the PA even though I was four feet away. They really could just walk about and politely find me. It was maybe 25% full. It's a dumb method. I get it. It's the BBQ way I suppose. Got my tray of food and was pretty stoked to try it all! Ribs were fair in my opinion. A bit dry and I had to use a knife to get them away from each other. Half chicken was even dryer. Zero moisture at all. I choked a bit on the breast meat. What made it worse was the soggy skin situation. I only ate a few bites. Hard pass next time. Pulled/chopped pork had great flavor and was decently moist. It was in chopped sized small pieces, but I got some good bark and crispy bits inside for extra flavor. I like this with the hot sauce a good bit. In fact I like all of the sauces. Sausage was my favorite thing on the tray. I am not sure if they make them here or not, but I really liked it a lot. They have a full bar with local beers on tap along with some Bourbons and Whiskeys. They cater and have an upstairs area for private events. The staff were friendly and the food was out in about 10 minutes. They also have a covered patio outside. There is a gravel parking lot across the street and will validate for 1 hour for free. We had the BBQ Machos which I highly recommend and could easily be eaten as an Entree. We also had the Combo Platter which has Ribs, Half of Chicken, Pulled Pork, and a Jalepeno Sausage. (Had a lot of pickles in it). They have free water right when you walk in which is great in this hot ass town lol. They are also known for an amazing and award winning (literally) whiskey and bourbon. My niece and husband tried and said it was smooth and delicious-on par with a $300 bottle they tried. I've had them at British fish and chip shops, I've had them at the polo bar in NYC, I've had French fries everywhere including France lol, these are the best. A little gritty, plenty of parking, and the unmistakable hum of change in the air. Fast forward to today, the parking lot next door is gone, replaced with fresh businesses and a more polished downtown energy. But the food? Still just as incredible. Tonight's crowd was a full Nashville sampler. People in business suits, gym clothes, cowboy boots, and concert tees. Tourists fresh off Broadway mingled with locals who clearly knew exactly what to order. That alone speaks volumes. Over eight years ago, I posted one of my first reviews on yelp because I was simply stunned by the whole Peg Leg Porker experience. While I had not planned on reviewing a place I already reviewed, I thought it would be prudent to let you all know how this culinary treasure stood up against the test of time. Eight years later, Peg Leg Porker still delivers over the top barbecue. For me, Peg Leg Porker is exemplary in all categories: Location, ambience, service, and, of course, the food. What I love best about Peg Leg Porker is the quaint and down home feel of the whole set up within the restaurant operations. Casual order at the register, your name is called when your order is ready. Food served on metal trays, bottles of barbecue sauce, everywhere, and a special pumping station for some super fun, hot barbecue sauce for the brave at heart. Aside from the food, they also offer a first class bar that's quite fitting for the location. A great selection of beers on tap plus a deep selection of about anything else you can imagine. Rounding out the environment are staff who are well-versed in proper hospitality vibes. Everyone hustles with a purpose, from the gentleman who answered the phone when I wanted to see if it was crowded as I was trying to gauge my time driving through Nashville, from the order taker at the register, to the gentleman who kept the dining area tidy and spotless as he clean tables and collected trays from the roomful of patrons. Spotless bathrooms also tell me that nothing at Peg Leg Porker is overlooked. Let's get down to the serious business: the food. I love barbecue, and I hold close to my heart any great barbecue experience I am fortunate to have. Peg Leg Porker, for me, is a national standout as it easily eclipses most other barbecue experiences I've ever had. What makes the food so special is easily found in each bite you take. Today's focus will be on their ribs. The ribs offer tender, fall off the bone eating, with a dry rub preparation that is simply divine. Whether you prefer a hint of sauce, or a healthy squeeze of sauce, each bite is a treat. Time and time again their ribs deliver a great eating experience. On a recent trip through Florida and Georgia I had barbecue three different times on three different days but given the chance to have Peg Leg Porker, I had to stop during a twelve hour drive back to Chicago. The sides are equal to the task of standing up against the ribs. For me when it comes to barbecue, I gotta have fries, beans, and slaw. The fries were great, but over-salted this time, the beans and the slaw are simply the perfect partners to the rib perfection that lays before you. My mouth is watering just telling you about this experience. Hats off to a place that is obviously run with care, and dedication.
