Came to Peking Chef during lunch time and it was a complete Ghost Town. There was no one there, which I guess was good because we had the whole place to ourselves. I ordered the Spicy Salmon roll and the Combination Lo Mein lunch special. I was hoping the Sushi would come out before my meal as I wanted to eat it as an appetizer. Most places I go to, if you get Sushi and a meal, the sushi comes out first. However, this did not happen. So, I was left to play with the Chinese Year mat on the table while everyone else enjoyed their appetizer, Lol. With the Combination Lo Mein lunch special, you don't get rice, and I could see why. When the plate was sat in front of me, it was loaded with Lo Mein. I mean shoot, I'm not complaining, I love Lo Mein, but it was more of a dinner portion then a lunch portion. So, if your really hungry at lunch time, get the Combination Lo Mein. Needless to say, I left with a container full of leftovers. As I started eating my Lo Mein, is when my sushi came out. I mean, it is what it is, and I just ate them both together. The Combination Lo Mein was delicious. There was plenty of meat ( shrimp, beef, and chicken), and it was really flavorful. I didn't even need to add soy sauce and that's saying something. The Spicy Salmon sushi was your typically sushi. It was good, but nothing to really rave about. The staff needs to work on Customer Service, as we were coming to an end of our meal, we asked for the check because we had to get back to work and wanted to have everything finished up before we we're done eating. We have been fans of this restaurant for many years, and have received consistently received excellent service, delicious food (Chinese and Japanese sushi), and good value. Try the Peking Chicken or Mooshu pork, both excellent and our go to dishes, and the Miami sushi roll is to die for. Both eat in (nice atmosphere) and carry out (quick service) are very good. People on here are giving them crap for one or two specific things. I've been ordering from Peking chef for over 10 years. They have fair prices for usually consistent flavor. I will admit every now and then their food lacks a little bit but it's very rare. I usually love getting food from here, it's convenient and usually yummy. Last night I ordered chicken lo mein and chicken fried rice. After I had already gone on to my second serving I noticed a few pieces of shrimp. I am very allergic to shrimp, and so is the rest of my family. My dad and I spent the rest of the night in pain from the allergy. This is the SECOND time this has happened. Last time when I ordered vegetable spring rolls, i got shrimp in that too. I'm very disappointed because I really enjoyed eating here but they have been irresponsible with keeping foods seperate. My family has been coming to Peking since we moved to Columbia in 1993. No other Chinese restaurant we have visited since then has been able to stand up to the quality of Peking Chef. Yeah, I know, that's saying a lot. They don't try to overseason the food or get too fancy with it. It's just good food, period. Anyone who believes that the food is bland has been eating the wrong stuff. The sauces aren't too thin or too thick. Chicken dishes are made with all breast meat, none of the scrappy crap you find in most other places. They will custom-make any dish you request. The owners in the last couple of months have expanded the seating area and added sushi to the menu. This is nice, family-run restaurant. When we have out-of-town guests we always take them to Peking - none have ever complained about not liking it. read more

I had the wonton soup and house salad with ginger dressing to start off with. The salad was very fresh and the dressing is so good. The soup was good and the crispy strips that come with it were definitely fresh. I had the California roll B with masago, Boston roll, and spicy crunch shrimp roll. All were very good and fresh! The Boston roll was my favorite with the sweet sauce added. Also ask for the spicy mayo sauce is a must get. They are relatively inexpensive and have some good lunch deals. This restaurant absorbed the sushi place next door and opened their own sushi counter. Unfortunately it's not good. Sushi isn't really something that should be sort of good. The salmon in my salmon roll was grey, the hamachi was questionable. We tried crab rangoons, but they were terrible. The wonton wrapping the filling was rock hard, and the filling itself was cream cheese. No evidence of making any effort to at least include something that resembled crab. I don't mind spending $50 on dinner, but when it's this bad, it's really irritating. The search for a good Chinese place goes on. read more

Came here with friends as a standby for P.F. Changs-- apparently other people had the same idea of a movie and chinese food on Christmas. Our friends who had been here before said the food and service is usually good, and I take them at their word. Unfortunately, first impressions are everything, espcially if the dining experience doesn't pan out. There was a lot not to like--full tea pots were on the table, but there weren't any cups to go with them for over 20 minutes. By the time we had them the first pots were cold. Soup was good (it's had to mess up wonton soup, IMO). I ordered spring rolls, a friend at the other end of the table ordered egg rolls. They both came on one plate and were placed at the center of the table. A minor inconvenience, but an un-needed one-- how hard is it to put individually ordered appetizers on individual plates? When the main entrees came out every single one was cold. I ordered the "Combination Stew," which was supposed to come with scallops, duck meat, a few little chunks of chicken, and shrimp. My wife ordered a vegetarian dish. When her dish came out it was presesnted to me as "combination stew," even though all protein (see above) was missing, and it was clearly her dish-- it had potatoes, string beans, some carrots, and peas. My wife looked at it when it was placed down and asked the server, "what's supposed to be in this?" His response: "combination stew." For what it was, it was good, but it wasn't combination stew! When the server came back with the rest of the table's (cold) entrees, I told him "this isn't combination stew." In what can only be described as a monosylabbic debate, he said "yes," as in, there was no way it could not be combination stew. I told him "no, it isn't" and that it was missing chicken, duck, scallops, and shrimp, and that it was only vegetables. He then ran back to get the original order form the waiter took and asked me what I ordered. I repeated that I ordered "Combination Stew" and pointed to it on the form. After that he said, "oh. it was missed." No sorry, no nothing. Just "it was missed." About 15 (or so) minutes later, it finally came out, with a very casual apology. It was delicious, and, as an added bonus, it was hotter than everyone else's entree. One star for service (or lack thereof), with an extra star for the entree being hot and tasty when I eventually got it. read more

Every time I go here my food is always hot and fresh! The beef sticks and crab Rangoon are by far the best you can get around here!! I also enjoy the fact that they don't mind explaining a dish to you or making substitutions. I will be back again soon. read more

Standard Americanized Chinese fare. However, if food allergies are a problem for you, stay away. I'm not the only reviewer to mention issues with food allergies and cross contamination. Having a lazy night, we decided to order in and try out the local Chinese restaurant. We've tried all the other restaurants in the plaza, so why not? I placed my order by phone, making sure to inform the woman taking my order that we have a severe peanut allergy in the family, and she assured me that wouldn't be a problem. Nothing we ordered should have peanuts in it. Yet, my golden crispy beef (neither golden, crispy, nor spicy, as indicated by the pepper icon) contained a peanut. Fortunately, I'm not the one with the allergy. Had I been sharing with my son? Different story entirely. The food was sub-par/average. The beef chow fun was decent. The golden crispy beef was passable - slathered in sauce, so that obliterated any goldenness and crispiness, and there was no heat to it whatsoever. The chicken lo mein had an off taste. The shrimp chow mein had bits of shell in it, and the chow mein noodles were pre-packaged. On the plus side, the fortunes in the fortune cookies were somewhat accurate (for pre-packaged fortune cookies). Mine told me I shouldn't be lazy. read more

It's hard to be a 5 star chinese place that's not Peking Gourmet Inn in Bailey's Crossroads in VA. This place is quite good. It's never too crowded but never dead. They have decent hours, and also good food and prices. There are a few things that will be really quite good here. Get the Chicken Peking Style. Lightly fried, mildly spicy, and you'll be surprised how good it is. Also try the lamb. Good egg rolls and hot and sour soup too. I've been here a few times and it's always been enjoyable. They've got TVs and the decor isn't too much like your traditional Chinese place. I don't know anything about sushi really, but I was satisfied with the rolls I got here. Peking Chef restaurant says it specializes in Hunan, Szechuan and Cantonese Cuisine, but we found their food bland. They also offer sushi. On a recent Sunday evening my family and I decided to give Peking Chef a try. Located in a corner of the Hickory Ridge Village Center at 6420 Freetown road in Columbia, MD, Peking Chef's décor is clean and spacious with a clear Asian influence. We were greeted and seated right away, in the nearly empty restaurant. That's about where the high points end. When we looked around to order, no one was in sight. Even the sushi chef had left his station. Eventually someone showed up and we placed our order. First out was my husband's Hot and Sour soup which was heated with black pepper but otherwise unseasoned. My daughter's Egg Drop soup was flavorless. They were almost finished with their soup before my Chicken with Corn soup arrived. Any longer and I would have sent it back untouched. I found it bland with a hint of corn flavor and the unpleasant texture of dry chicken crumbles. For appetizers we ordered fried dumplings and Barbecued Spareribs. While the filling for the dumpling had an ok flavor, the dipping sauce was mostly vinegar. I ended up using strait soy sauce instead. The ribs were dry and completely tasteless. Even duck sauce couldn't save them, especially not the thin watery kind they offered. Portions on the main course were very good sized for the price. Sadly, the Soft Shell Crab with Ginger Scallion Sauce had a soggy gummy texture. It was slathered in a sauce that would have benefited from much more ginger and scallions. The Shrimp Pad Thai had lots of large shrimp tossed with Chow Foon noodles. Other than a slight smoky flavor, it was bland as well. Overall we found both the food and service unimpressive. We didn't sample any of their sushi, but judging by the lack of turnover, I wouldn't want to try it. read more

I have been going to Peking Chef since about 1992. Since then I have introduced many people to their absolutely fine dining. Some make it a priority to visit the restaurant whenever they come to town. Between countless family and business meals I have found the food to be top notch - always served fresh, hot, and with a friendly smile. I do NOT care for the huge televisions as they distract from paying attention to those with whom you are dining. We used to eat here all the time and the food was really REALLY good. However I had lunch there yesterday with my daughter. When we went in there were no other patrons there but the man at the front door just waved his arm at us and told us to go sit down. Perhaps he didn't want any customers that day. A waitress appeared who was very polite and attentive. I ordered Sesame Chicken with white rice and broccoli. There was nothing good about any of it. It was completely tasteless. The chicken was that awful white meat, so dry and hard I had to cut it with a knife. (When did restaurants start using lumps of white chicken instead of dark meat???) This used to be the best Chinese restaurant in the area but not anymore. What happened??? If you're planning on chicken, rethink your choice. read more

My rating is based mainly on the service and not the food. The food is decent. I never choose to go there, but have gone along when my wife has asked me to go. As stated above, I have never been overly impressed by the service in the past, but today was a new low and the last time that we will ever go there. We went in around 12:30 pm and were the only customers in the restaurant. We sat down and the waitress (who I believe is also the owner) just dropped the menus on the corner of the table and walked away. She never came back to see if we were ready to order, so after about ten minutes I had to get up to get her to come and take our order. I believe that on at least a couple of previous occasions we were overcharged and we had to point it out to them. I don't remember this ever causing a problem in the past. Today, we were overcharged for two items - our soup and my daughter's order (only 65 cents total), but I remember it happening in the past and it was more of a principle thing to me. I politely explained both of the errors to our waitress and she informed informed me that our daughter's order was not considered part of the lunch special even though she ordered it that way (lo mein combination but without the meat). My wife and I asked why she didn't explain that to us at the time, especially since the meat usually makes something more expensive, not less expensive. She didn't really give us an answer and just responded that she did us a favor by not charging us full price. She then asked if I wanted to pay the house price or my price (seemingly disregarding that we were also overcharged on the soup) and I told her my price. She loudly make a comment about her business and walked off with my bill and credit card. Unfortunately, this all took place in front of the handful of other customers that had come into the restaurant. My wife was shocked that anyone (let alone the likely owner of a restaurant) would act like that to customers, especially in front of other customers, and asked me if she minded if she and our kids could wait outside while the bill was being paid because she was so uncomfortable with the woman's behavior. I paid the bill and as I was walking out she loudly and sarcastically said to me "thank you Brian - God bless you." Needless to say we are never going back. I have always felt that the service was average at best, but the woman's actions to treat a customer like that (even if she felt the customer was in the wrong) and over what really amounted to less than $1.00 is no way to run a successful business. read more

Ordered delivery from these idiots. More than an hour later I received a missed call. Apparently it was the driver who couldn't find the house. I wasn't by my phone so I wasn't able to answer. No message so I didn't realize it was the driver. Not realizing it was the driver who called me, I call the restaurant and they insist that it's my fault that I should have called back an unknown number. Then the rude woman yells at me to call back the number. Then she hangs up in my face. I call the number, sent directly to VM. I call back he answers and says because I didn't pick up the order was canceled and taken back to the store. Then HE hangs up in my face. I call the store back to complain and apparently it's my fault. THE ABSOLUTE WORST service. I wouldn't send my worse enemy here to get food poisoning. A*holes! read more
