I really hate to say it but this place has really gone downhill. Three to five years ago I would have given The Peking 4 to 5 stars. While visiting the North Conway area this establishment was once a staple destination while visiting the area. Over the last 2 years and a few visits the restaurant has lost its appeal. Our last visit was with a number of close friends and family. Unfortunately experience the was a bit embarrassing. At one time the food was stellar for Americanized Chinese in both quantity and quality. What really pains me is the following. The staff don't seem to know the menu, and are uneducated as to what other choices or substitutions can be made. The menus now look like they were made on a copy machine and then laminated poorly and are unclean. Some of the silverware that we were given was unclean. A number of the chairs at our table appear to have been repaired with clear packing tape. There does not appear to be anyone of Asian descent working in the stablishment anymore. Frankly I find it very important in most if not all cases that if your running an Asian restaurant, that the majority of the staff should be of Asian descent as well. For a few reasons. 1 to add to the overall atmosphere. 2 to ensure the cuisines authenticity. Prices in all items have gone up significantly. Some prices do not make sense, specially in regard to appetizers or substitutions. I observed they're being trash in the lobby and a large number of cigarette butts and refuse at the entryway of the restaurant. Overall the parking lot is not very well kept. It being mean winter is no excuse. The restaurant appears to be in a sad state of affairs and was once a pristine example of what a Chinese food restaurant should be. I hope that the owners will take this review into consideration and restore the restaurant to its previous luster. I would hate to see an establishment that I prized and was excited to go to as a child to fall by the wayside and in time fade out of existence because of poor management and or practices. As I stated before myself and my family once enjoyed this establishment for our trips to the White Mountains. This experience was always a treat for my daughter. Now even she is reluctant at her young age to venture through this once great establishments door. We will likely be in the area again in the next few months or likely closer to summer. One thing that I did notice was that there was some sort of construction going on in the back of the building. Perhaps this is a new dining room addition or some sort of enhancement the facility. My advice to you Peking, welcome or not would be to make sure that your current dining experience is positive that way when your new upgrade is ready to be used that you have clients left to use it. Unfortunately the only positive thing but I have to say about the most recent experience was that my drink from the bar, a Suffering Bastard was made perfectly. I hope the establishment is not turning its focus to catering to the bar flies as that would be the beginning of the establishments downward spiral to closing it's doors. I have great hope that things will change for the better for the Peking and its patrons, sooner rather than later. read more

My in laws loves this place, but not so much for me. The dinner menu is actually pretty pricey. The Peking Duck was half of a duck, deep fried and that's it. I don't think it is worth the money for it. The service was OK, but the waitress was good when she was there. My experience was OK, but I come back again just to test it out. read more

Very disappointed food. Not many options. We tried many Chinese buffets in different states. This one is the worst. The only protein it has is chicken and pork. The only vegetable it has is broccoli. No seafood or ice cream. The food let us feel that the purpose of running this restaurant is not to provide the good meal for the customers. read more

Drive right to the restaurant after a day away. Quickly seated with a menu and water but after 20 plus minutes we left!

As you walk in, the bathrooms are near the door and the bar is to the left. All I smelt was bathroom and cigarette smoke. Country music on the radio. We eat dinner early so we were seated right away. Our waitress was kind and attentive. I ordered a love potion, which came out as a frozen cocktail (not the norm) so I then ordered a scorpion bowl which was delicious. I avoided the sushi/ shashimi ( which is my norm) as I didn't feel like getting food poisoning. The food is adequate. It will need seasoning (salt) to your taste. The tofu I ordered was in huge chucks which is difficult to cook to proper texture but again was adequate. Probably will never eat here again but the scorpion bowl was great :) read more

Well not anymore since they changed owners the place has gone down hill The Teriyaki sticks were horrible (why ruin a good thing) Crab Rangoons aren't what they used to be either. Where to begin? The menu is confusing, the service was bad; however, the food was not as terrible as I feared it would be. Worst Chinese buffet ever!!! When we first arrived, the waitress said she couldn't give us water because they ran out of cups. But I saw other tables getting drinks in a cup ( I guess they only had cups for paid drinks) More than half of food trays were empty. Nothing to eat. We went there for sushi and there were only 3 pieces of sushi. We waited for 40 min, they did not make any more. I paid $ 16.95 per person. I have been a loyal Peking customer for 25+ years. Until today, I had never "sent back" a meal nor had I ever had a bad experience there. Unfortunately, while the service was *excellent*, the food was absolutely disgusting. I ordered chicken fingers, fried rice and steak teriyaki. I sent back the chicken fingers. The rice was disgusting and the steak teriyaki was slimy. This is the biggest disappointment of my life. Whoever owns the Peking now really f-ed it up. This should end up being a case study of "what NOT to do when you buy an established restaurant in a small town" -- they messed with perfection. The place will be closed in a year. read more

This WAS the best Chinese restaurant in northern New England for years...Since the change in ownership, I have heard from friends that the quality deteriorated badly, but I decided to check it out first hand. Having eaten here many times I knew the food was good. Today I enjoyed a wide variety of dishes at the buffet. The standard dishes were good - General Tso's, sesame chicken, chicken with broccoli, Kung pow chicken. This was a pleasant surprise to find this Chinese restaurant while on vacation in North Conway. We ordered several meals to go and enjoyed them in our room. This place has all the ingredients to be a success however, right now they need to refine a few things. The ladies are nice but they need to be a little more professional and complain about fellow customers and how slow it is out of earshot, instead of near tables. These ladies clearing the tables and handling money should not be putting the food out without gloves. I even witnessed our own server put out spicy shrimp and using her hands to push the rest into the Buffett tray. Another server walked along grabbing things she wanted to eat with her hands and nibbling on them. Inappropriate. The fruit and desserts are always low or out at the at the buffet for some reason. They do a good job at keeping the hot food available but not a good job at keeping sauces and things such as gravy for the egg foo yung fresh and available. The bus boy lost the race with a sloth and a snail to clear a table. We were there for an hour and a half and the entire time he cleared two large and one small table around us and used dirty rags that didn't even effectively clean and then when he made the settings on the clean tables they were awful. This place has a better chance of just sticking to being a buffet more than just the two days a week. We would like to come there during the week but I cannot justify paying $10 for an order rice and then whatever other items we would like to enjoy for a family of five. Way too overpriced even for tourists. The bathrooms were in need of a cleaning each time we visited with the men's room being soaking wet with urine in front of the toilet in the urinal. If you are a man and you need to use the bathroom anybody can see you if somebody else opens the door. If they just spent a few minutes keeping things straight and nice it would go along way in the customer's eyes. Horrible service! Here right now and was insulted by several staff members. My husband and I are spending $40 on lunch. Our boneless ribs and teriyaki from the pupu platter were overcooked to our liking. We requested that they be remade. You would think we insulted everyone and their mother. The host came over and said that they were fine and they would make something else since we wouldn't like them. We asked them to go ahead and try as we would rather have some teriyaki rather than none. All Hell broke loose. A table next to us with 2 elderly couples was waiting on food. They were asking for the waitress and she couldn't be found. Apparently, remaking 2 pieces of teriyaki and a handful of boneless ribs caused such a commotion back in the kitchen that other food was being held up. The elderly diners asked again and a belligerent young bus boy said he looked and couldn't find her. When they asked another question; he repeatedly told them that it wasn't his problem to deal with...he's just the busboy. How do you condone speaking to the elderly like this. Then a different waitress comes over and rather loudly announces to the elderly couple as well as the restaurant that they aren't eating because "these people sent back food that there was nothing wrong with". Seriously?! Finally, the remade food comes. We just ask for to - go containers. Then it gets better! Some supervisor comes over and rambled that they remade the food. I said at that point....who cared about the food? The horrible service, treatment of the elderly and to us was horrendous! Then the waitress comes back and whispers in her ear. We are then, again announced to the restaurant that they want us to leave! We told her that we are trying; but waiting for check and the leftovers. She then said she'd pay and want us to leave. I have NEVER ever experienced that behavior in an establishment. So now, we did get a free lunch.....but not worth it. Here we were excited to be back in the area and finally have some east coast Chinese food again. First meal was at Peking. Won't ever go back. I know family won't go back. Being in management for years; I would never think of treating customers that way. This establishment needs to learn manners and have some respect for their customers. I can't get passed the way that they treated the elderly couples at the table next to us! There are too many other choices out there for dining. I love their chicken fingers ( some of the best duck sauce around) Although I do not like the sweet and sour red sauce at all it is tolerable here at the Peking. Another of my favorites are the crab rangoons. The chicken fingers and Crab Rangoons are the number one reason i come here. And the scorpion bowl. It is good to share between two to three people. Very good. Their blue alcohol drink is very good too. The service can be a little slow and I have gotten some rude ones so that is why it got a 4 instead of 5. And I am not a difficult customer at all. In fact I am pretty easy to please. They have pretty decent tea that comes with your meal. Pu Pu Platter for two is more than enough for two people especially if you haven't eaten all day and you are there for dinner. The fried rice is good but its just rice. The egg foo young is highly recommended. The kids meals are good too ( they use normal chicken fingers that they serve adults and fries) and other kids meals are good too. We ordered takeout this past week. First time. Probably last time. Our order was pretty large and our schedule dictated we wouldn't be eating right away but wanted the food for when we could. So we didn't check it for accuracy right away. As we sat to eat we notice about half the food was missing. I called to inquire about the rest of my order and was greeted with " ya, you forgot here"......ok. I corrected the gentleman and ask if he could please remake the order. He hung up on me! I called back to speak the manager. Explained the issue and she insisted she was sorry and of course would remake it. Apparently "remaking" an order consists dropping all the fried foods back into the fryer. Behold!! Chicken and shrimp briquettes! I asked the young lady how she would like to rectify the issue's and she told me she could not make any decisions but the store manager would call me the following day. Shockingly this never happen. I was finally able to get to the store manager. I asked if she had received the message to call me, yes indeed she had but simply hadn't done it. No apologies . She insisted my account of the transaction was inaccurate but would be willing to give me accredit for my next visit. I explained we where not local to area and this would not be satisfactory. So long story long...she refunded $20.00 of a $100.00 order. Had to go twice to get my food. Not prepared as promised. Was told it was my fault. Pizza it is! read more
