Sadly, today was my third and last visit to Pele's Kitchen. The food was mediocre the first two times but I came back because the ambience is fabulous and there aren't a lot of options in Pahoa. The inside is vibrant and artistically decorated and the outside garden area is lovely. We ordered 1 omelette, 1 eggs Benedict, and 2 coffees - the tab was $74 for two (including a $12 tip). My eggs Benny was yuk. The eggs were overcooked, the muffins were soggy, and the hollandaise sauce was clearly not the real deal. I was super hungry so I ate it , but I could not eat the hash fries. I sat there trying to figure out what was wrong with them, they didn't even taste like potatoes, very weird. Thrice frozen? They would do well to cut their menu in half and put more care into their food. So bummed. read more

Came here after searching for a place to eat in Pahoa with good reviews. I was intrigued by the variety of fruit and the food looked appetizing. Inside has cool wall art that you just constantly look at as you eat. Employees seem friendly but look like they just got out of bed with their pajamas on as they walk around and serve you, never saw anything like that before but I guess this place is laid back enough that you could wear your bed clothes to work. Food looks great in photos but what I had wasn't so great. I got the loco moco and it's made with country gravy I believe and it came out in a whiteish color and was bland, didnt even taste like gravy. Colorful vibes attract a ton of guests to this spot. Come in and come early, seems like more travelers are finding out this is one of the few places to dine-in, so you can't be upset if there's no place to sit or if they take their time! 20 or so minute drive from Kehena, we did breakfast every morning here during our stay south of Pahoa and the coconut syrup is to die for! I was introduced yesterday to pele's kitchen by a good friend of mine. The menu had some great options and the ginger gauva juice was phenomenal. I got the gluten free pancakes. They were the best pancakes I've ever had , didn't even need syrup. Kimberly was amazing, and made me feel at home. Overheard two lady's who were being super demanding and rude to Kimberly,but she handled it well and was super nice. I'm kinda glad those days didn't stay because they would have messed up the vibes anyway. My overall experience was amazing I'll definitely be back for the pancakes and Kimberly. read more

THE BEST HIPPIE STYLE BRUNCH IN PAHOA! NEVER MISS THIS SPOT! We've dine-in here twice and we had the great time with the place and the food. The best place to grab brunch in town indeed. First of all there's not a lot of selection to grab meal around the area. And since we at least almost an hour drive to Hilo you gotta grab something somewhere within the area and this one by far is the best! The place itself is already instagrammable inside. They got a garden seating which we dine on the second day we came here. Both are terrific! The hippie vibe will make you love the place! Staffs are very friendly and efficient. Food is definitely the description of Onolicious. What an Aloha experience we had in here. Personally this mark my experience in dining! FOOD: Loco Moco Bowl with Big Island grass-fed beef patty is heaven! One of the best! The gravy ain't salty and my overall bowl is seasoned just right. The over-easy egg is cooked just the way I requested! They even put a bowl of sliced fruit on the side which I find it a perfect balance of my meal at that day! My bandit got the typical American breakfast which is omelet, toasted bread and bacon with a fruit sliced on the side. - Second day - Omelets with hash brown & sliced of fruits plus a side of bacon which makes it another Onolicious American brunch. Bandit enjoyed it! Pohoiki Fish Plate, 2 over-easy eggs, Hawaiian-style coconut fried fish, yellow rice & ube patty with sliced of fruits is a heavy yummy brunch! Though the fish is a bit dry it is still good. Rice is cooked just right and the ube patty is so yum! Wish they put a homemade sauce on its side though. Overall t'was a decent Onolicious brunch in the middle of Pahoa. And since their coffee comes from Kona t'was a dreamy haven for us especially to my bandit. Also, they will gave you a stone painted with art and I find it really cute! We ended up getting three stones which is currently displayed on our window. Highly recommended! Pele's Kitchen was one of the best parts of our trip to Big Island! What a gem! We were lucky enough to be staying fairly close to Paloa, but I would gladly had driven from further away to experience this amazing place. We went three times and loved it every time. Everything we tried was so delicious and I've never had better pancakes than the gluten free ones I got here. It came with five different syrups, four of them made in house. They were so good! So, as we were seated next to the busy street, we were given menus and our drink orders were taken. When our server finished sweeping, we were asked if we wanted to sit inside, which I greatly appreciated. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak, which came with hash browns. He orders this out frequently and said that it was just "ok." Additionally, the portion was on the smaller size. I ordered the Waikoloa scramble, which came on two bruschetta size pieces of toast, with brown rice. This place is the bomb!!! I absolutely loved everything served here. It was the only place we picked for breakfast daily! I tried the Eggs Benny with the Hawaiian poke (sooooo good) seved with a delicious purple yam mash (best thing I've ever had!). I also tried the Hawaiian fish one day and the flavours were on point! The coconut coating was so good! The exotic fruit plate is a must try, it gave us the opportunity to try some new tropical fruits we've never had. The service is slow, they don't have a large number of servers and it takes a while for someone to get you seated, then for them to come back to take your order and on our first visit we waited for over 40mins for our food (i think there was a miscommunication or delay of some sort because the next few time it came within 20 to 30 mins). The ambience is very colourful and had a cute cheerful vibe. It's hand painted with interesting designs so there is a lot to look at while you wait. We never had to wait for a table in the mornings as well. Extra: the sell some cute handmade tags( made by a local surfer) and I got to pick up a super adorable tiny stuffed whale! read more

This quaint, Bohemian style cafe serves up a great healthy meal at a reasonable price. It's located in the old Pahoa town, about 35 minutes outside of Hilo, 2 hours from Kona, and 35 minutes from Volcano National Park. I wanted to try their inticing ulu (bread fruit), chocolate, mochi waffles, which I drizzled with maple syrup and served with garnished fruits. The ulu was tasteless, yet it gave the certain texture. There was a faint taste of chocolate and it was chewy as mochi is expected to be. Very different, but very good. I loved painted designs on the walls. Gave the place a cool 70ish vibe. The seating area is rather small. There are a few individual tables and a larger taller for bigger parties. They do get busy during normal breakfast hours. We got there about 11 a.m and there were ample seats available. They close at noon. There is free, street-side parking. If you're looking for something different this is the place to go. read more

Was supposed to come here last year but there was a crazy rain storm and all of Pahoa town had no electricity! But I came back this year and I was going to go out of my way to check this place out. A local mentioned it to me the year before and I made sure to come back and now I'm biased. I love Pahoa. I love anything that comes out of Pahoa because it's given with such TLC. Pele's Kitchen is gorgeous inside and out -- the unique artwork from ceiling to floor alone is breathtaking. The fruit from the backyard garden was delicious and unique. Everything here is beyond fresh - and super delicious - except the coffee, which was just too light for my tastes. But I found this to be true throughout Pahoa, seemingly no matter the place. Here at Pele's they serve a local blend, which I think is true throughout the town. But back to the food. I ate there twice. One day I got the Waikoloa scramble and the ulu waffle. Hey, don't judge me! Ok, you know how sometimes you get a veggie scramble and it's kind of light on the veggies and heavy on the cheese and you feel kind of junk afterwards? Well, none of that here. Everything was super balanced! And the hash browns were perfection - crispy on the outside but not at all dry! And the fruit - WOW. I'm not sure I've ever had fresher fruit in a restaurant setting. And such fun fruit too! There was some papaya and longan, in addition to some pineapple and other stuff I can't remember. The ulu waffle was seriously out of this world. Super crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and amazingly flavorful throughout. Ever since I had it I haven't been able to stop thinking about it and have been looking for mixes and recipes to see if I could reproduce it (I haven't decided on anything, because I'm pretty sure I can't) - that's the impact this waffle had on me. I paired it with some of their coconut syrup - OMG. And that syrup was so amazing they were almost out of it! Needless to say, I could only eat about half of what I got so I took it back to my daughter, who concurred with with everything I just said. I went back and got a Benedict - also so delicious! The Big Island was still in the throes of fighting off COVID when we went, so Pele's was still closing at noon. Because we were there for a swim meet we couldn't seem to make it there before they closed, unfortunately. Which was junk because we really wanted to try their house made ravioli! Pele's is an adorable cafe located right on the main strip that runs through Pahoa. They have a ton of outdoor seating. I have absolutely no idea where parking is because we parked at the Pahoa park and walked over. This is an omni restaurant that serves vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options - and as far as I could tell they were fantastic! Everything is clearly marked, so you there's no confusion. The service was wonderful here and everything was super clean.. If we ever go back to Pahoa I'm stopped here for breakfast. Maybe by then they'll be open for lunch and dinner too! After we placed our orders; for her, vegetarian Eggs Benedict and the vegan breakfast burrito for me. We waited closed to an hour for our food to arrive. I brought it to our server's attention that we had been waiting a long time and she apologized, but was sort of dismissive. Then the chef came out to explain there were several orders in front of ours and he had to clean off the grill because he was cooking meat on it. A simple "sorry about that" would have sufficed. My friend did enjoy her Eggs Beni and I liked my vegan bfast burrito. It was loaded with veggies and tofu and full of flavor. Delicious! Second visit: 10/16 Redemption Although first experience was less than ideal, we decided to give it another shot. There's no denying how good this place is. Creatively and thoughtfully prepared food boasting some amazing flavors. Our server appeared after 30 seconds and poured us waters and handed us menus. She was friendly, snappy, and helpful. After some deliberation, my friend went vegetarian Eggs Beni, again. I wanted to try something different than last time. I was craving pancakes, so I ordered vegan pancakes with pineapple and tofu scramble on the side. After a couple of minutes the chef appeared, he was very friendly and asked me to clarify whether I wanted plain tofu scramble or with veggies and seasoning. I opted for the latter. The food appeared 10 minutes later. The eggs beni were a solid eggs beni. However, this where I became a real fan of Pele's. The chef (owner I think) personally delivered my dishes and explained his rationale for preparation. What he presented was one of the best breakfast experiences I've ever had. 10 out 10.
