Please note that this great local brunch spot is only open on Sundays. Service was very friendly, food came quickly and flavors were very satisfying. The sourdough French toast tastes very different from what one would find on the mainland according to my son but he says it was really good in its own way. The country gravy is not heavy but has a nice richness to it. The ube patty was a hug for my belly. The pineapple upside down treat in the welcome bowl of pastries was really good. Overall? Pele is the goddess of fire, volcanos and apparently breakfast! We have been coming here daily and brought our family after our first visit. It's amazing and you can't go wrong with any of the dishes. We all tried something different on each visit. The food is incredibly delicious and the coffee comes in giant mugs. It's best to eat here on the weekdays as it's pretty busy on the weekends. Joseph is super wonderful and is Mr. Hawaii with the island vibes he gives off. [UPDATE: Okay, been here twice now: 5-stars all-the-way...!!! :D This time around, on top of our individual orders of hash-browns ($5; still YUM!!!), we ordered two coffees ($5 each), and shared the "Ulu" waffle plate (with no frills). Initially, we both agreed that $17 for a single (breadfruit, vegan) waffle (with a small side of fresh fruit) was a bit hefty (considering the Jungle Breakfast is a dollar less for twice as much food); however, I feel the price was well-justified. Excellent texture and great flavor! And the lilikoi and coconut syrups were total YUMMMMM!!! (OMG, that lilikoi is superb! The coconut was quite a surprise, with only a very subtle coconut essence coming through--which was nice (for both of us) since most times that coconut flavor can really overwhelm a dish if used with less discernment.) At the end, the bill was a very reasonable $28, since they included the refillable coffees into our meals, apparently. And, too, the service and customer care was absolutely spot-on "Aloha! E Como Mai!" all the way around! We say, "Mahalo nui loa," indeed...!] :D Been here only once; but, sometimes that's all I need to give a 5-star rating! :D From its funky, awesomely inviting fasçade, to its wildly eclectic interior, Pele's Kitchen seems to be a Pāhoa institution, from what we've heard! This is second visit here in last couple years. Covid prevented us from coming last year. Like the larger location next to previous one. It has the funky-cute Pahoa vibe. We certainly noticed the price hike, wow. Eggs Benedict now $18.50!! Now I can see if at a nice restaurant and/or water view but this is far from it. Hubby was looking forward to the Benny but refused to pay the price although he may as well have because the King omelette, $16.50, he ordered didn't come with toast (what?) and so we got $2 add-on fee. His meal came a good 5-7 mins before my plate came. I hate that. I ordered the chicken fried steak that came w/eggs/hash browns. Both meals had nice presentation and were prepared well. We got the extra crispy hash browns as requested. My server told me they didn't come with my meal but I pointed out on the menu that it was and she said " well then maybe they are." Coffee once again disappointed, very weak...$7 wasted. Overall though enjoyed meal. We were the only diners upon arrival but leaving we realized the place was 3/4 occupied. The irritation trying to leave was we had to get up twice to ask for our bill/credit card to be brought back, seriously at least 15 mins after removing our plates,rediculous. I was beginning to think they gave my card to someone else! I would have given 4 stars if based on just the meal....but the poor coffee, service issues and my delayed meal was part of the overall experience. read more

What a random gem. I didn't eat dinner after hiking up Mauna Kea last night, so I was starving in the morning. I wanted a satisfying, large, stick to the bones meal .. with endless coffee. We came here a few months ago for vacation. The service here is slow, but you are in Hawaii on vacation and didn't care. The Hawaiian word is Ho'onanea. I ordered the Tofu Scramble, which was GOOD! Iced coffees were so-so at best, I'm so-so sorry. Got take away, all of the food was surprisingly portable and road-trip friendly. Pele's kitchen provided an absolute dream dining experience! Everything we ordered was delicious and the atmosphere was just so magical! We ordered the ulu waffles (vegan) with a side of housemade tempeh and the lau lau. You can tell that everything was made with local ingredients and lots of love! The ulu waffles are a must!! Taste and texture was perfection and the housemade syrups were also very unique and yummy! We opted to dine outside which I would definitely recommend if the weather is nice! The back of the cafe has been converted into an awesome garden with a huge variety of different plants! One of the staff gifted us with a ripe avocado that had just fallen from their tree! We also got the chance to meet Casey (the owner) and his sweet lil pet chameleon!! this place used to be amazing. They did not short you on meat in your burritos or breakfast plates. They served with real butter on their bread and did not use canola oil and seed oils I would say about a year ago. The burrito started getting stuffed with rice and very little meat. The biscuits and gravy is now served with gravy and biscuits, but no meat. even when I ordered extra meat last I got three marble sized meat so this is our fourth time here this year and we've made our decision to never come back. The customer service is nice. The people are but the food has dropped off in quality are on their servings and the price is high for that kind of quality. It's sad to see our favorite place go downhill all the animals are gone also. read more

Holy bajolies! Pele's Kitchen delivers stellar service, fantastic, organic, and locally sourced food, all done with an emphasis on freshness. When perusing the menu, I noticed there were vegan and vegetarian options along with some meat lovers' offerings. I went vegetarian for this meal and had the Pahoa Scramble with ube on the side. Our waiter was friendly, informative, and instrumental in helping us choose the right food options for our mood. The walls were covered with original, local art, and the chairs were painted in bright, inviting colors. At the end of our meal, we were served a little chocolate heart wrapped in red foil, made in their kitchen, which I thought was so cool. This spot is THE BEST breakfast spot- one of my top 3 in the world! Yummy plant based options! I had to make a tough decision of whether to be naughty or nice when making my selection! I comprised by having the Vegan Jungle Breakfast (nice) with a side of buttermilk pancakes with macadamia nuts served with both coconut and Lilikoi syrups (naughty!) Both choices were excellent. The purple island yam and fresh fruit on the vegan breakfast were simple and delightful. The pancakes were so light and fluffy and the lilikoi syrup was scrumptious! We picked this cafe for its eclectic vibe and extensive menu. We love supporting small family-owned establishments, but this one missed the mark badly. The food and service were both disappointing. It pains me to give this place 1 star, but I'll explain. We ordered one vegetarian burrito and a guava juice and a coffee to-go. Both drinks were given to us promptly. The guava juice was tasty, but definitely tasted like it was from a Kern's can (Pele's juice price: $4.50, Kern's juice can price: $0.89). Now the worst part, the wait. We were not told before we ordered that it would be a 25 minute wait. But it gets worse: after 50 minutes of waiting and asking multiple times when our order would be ready, did we finally get our burrito. Upon asking when the order would be ready, I was told multiple times, "the grill is tiny, we will get to it." If you are charging $15.50 for a burrito, maybe you can get a bigger grill? Unfortunately the burrito was a not appetizing at all. No salt, no flavor. The pico de gallo on the side consisted of chopped tomatoes and a few pieces of white onion. The kitchen staff seemed stressed and not organized. At one point, I was considering donning an apron and getting back there to lend them a hand, to speed things up. Skip this spot. Food trucks elsewhere on the island can provide you with better quality food in a timely fashion. read more

Great breakfast spot in Pahoa Village! On the main Pahoa Village Road, where the main part of town is, Pele's Kitchen resides here. Street parking is available but can get tight when it is busy. Luckily this place is only open til lunch time so parking shouldn't be too bad. They've got a lot of delicious menu items for breakfast and brunch! My boyfriend and I ordered the Kalua pig with cheddar cheese omelette and Gourmet Breakfast Burrito, respectively. The kalua pig was very delicious - being tasty and not too salty - and was perfectly coupled with the cheddar cheese, making an irresistibly delicious omelette, fit for breakfast gods. My burrito was also quite delicious, with its blend of jasmine rice, egg, Portuguese sausage, and spinach. It was filling and tasty, but utilized much of the tortilla with a little too much rice. The "salsa" they provide is nice but is more of a pico de gallo. It would be nice to have a salsa, one that has more sauce and taste to add to this wonderful burrito. Nonetheless, I still recommend the burrito for satisfying and filling breakfast. Both dishes were served with a slice of pineapple, papaya, and longan fruit. Prices are decent! Not dirt cheap but not ridiculous for breakfast! Maybe around $9-$12 for each dish. Very affordable and justifiable by their portions. Staff was incredibly friendly. However, they were a little shortstaffed because there was only one girl hosting, serving, and bussing tables. It was to the point where some parties had to wait for her to bus the tables because she was the only one who could. Perhaps one more person to assist her and facilitate the customer's waiting times would allow for a better experience. Overall, GREAT breakfast place I would recommend. If you are near Pahoa, please come here! It is 30 minutes away from Hilo so it really isn't near Hilo. But if you are feeling adventurous and have plans to go to Pahoa anyways, try to make a trip here for a fresh, delicious breakfast! read more

But service was poor: the waitress was not warm, we needed napkins before meals came, she acted like Not Happy that we were asking for things; she served one plate to me while my son still waiting for his food.
