I drove 40 min out of my way to get Jack's teeth cleaned (anesthesia-free at San Mateo Pet Supply). I called two days in advance. "Me: Jack likes to eat small poodles, can you accommodate him or should I take him elsewhere? - No problem, we'll squeeze him in around the smaller dogs." So, I get there (after Jack barfed in the car on the way), only for them to tell me that they can't clean his teeth, because then they couldn't take three f'in poodles at the same time. So now my car smells like barf, Jack is stressed out, and I will never patronize this place again. So unprofessional. read more

I was the first person in the door bright and early on a monday... and I was coming in with questions about raising chickens. The girl behind the counter was very pleasant and told me she'd get someone who could help me better. I was met over by the poultry section and found the answers I needed. She was also very pleasant and very helpful. She even carried the 25 lb bag of food to the counter for me and didn't try to oversell me on a bunch of things I didn't really need yet. I wouldn't have known better and she was very honest and straight forward about it. After she rang me up she gave me a free sample of millet worms for my chickens. I just wanted to be sure to write this review since it seems the grumpy yelpers had their way with another good homegrown local merchant. I'll be back here for my chicken feed from now on. This is a perfect alternative to those who are not big fans of Petco and Petsmart. I like this place because its local, friendly, deceivingly large and community-like at the same time. All of the guys who work they are exceedingly friendly and helpful and the items don't seem differently priced than any other major pet store. I shop here all the time. its one of the very few places that carries EVO, which is the best food for your dog. I was feeding my dog Science Diet until the staff kindly informed me of the ingredients. Its just full of by-products. All the Natura dog foods are completely natural! Im so thankful that they gave me all those free samples! I think the best part of the store is the staff.. they always have smiles and are always willing to carry out my dog food. Being pregnant, it is always nice to get a helping hand. I dont even have to ask, they always offer! If your serious about your dog loving skills, then you'll get the time to know the "vicious pit bulls" behind the counter. Go ahead and stereotype them all you want, but your being extremely hypocritical ... if you actually took the time to get the know them, or even put your hand out for them to sniff... you would realize from the first second that they are the sweetest "pits" you will ever meet. and for bring children into the store... iv seen plenty of customers put their young children behind the counter to play with "vicious dogs." the staff is always inviting kids to go back there and always making an extra effort to ensure the customers of the pits sweetness. The larger pit.. known as Duke, had his ears cut off from his orginal owner who wanted him to be a fighter, but once realizing that he did not fight other dogs, he threw in to the streets, where the humane society found him. then, out of the kindness of his heart, one of the SMPS employees took the time to get to know him, and realized how sweet he was, and took him to a good home. and for them jumping on the counter? please.. have you seen that counter?? a great dane would even have trouble jumping on that counter. I really think people ought to give every dog a chance. i admit i was terrified of duke from the second i saw him, but when the employees informed me of his kindness, i gave him a chance by walking up to the gate, and he ran over to me with a wagging tale and lots of very wet kisses. read more

I came here with my dog because I read pretty good reviews about their selection of food and treats. As soon as I walked in I was asked to carry my dog while shopping because dogs "pee a lot". Like most responsible dog owners, my dog is house broken and has never urinated in any establishment I've taken her. Also, despite the Yelp reviews, I saw nothing here for dogs. They only had a few shelves of chicken feed and some other stuff in a small unimpressive area. They should either update their Facebook page or create a website that provides information of what their store offers to better inform potential customers. This is a wonderful local business, with a huge selection of pet food in the back at very reasonable prices. The only thing is they are usually quite short handed, so you either know what you want, or patiently wait for help. Sometimes, the people have been a bit gruff, but not unfriendly and helpful. I came here to get a special kind of duckling food for some baby ducks that have made a home in my pool and they had this, plus an amazing assortment of feed, toys and accessories for pretty much every kind of animal there is! But it's the ambiance that is so great! It's a true feed store, not like a PetCo, and there are adorable animals running around, adorable people who love animals running around and it just had a great feeling... plus they gave me some good advice about the ducklings, citing experience, which really helped and gave me a good feeling that these aren't just clerks - these are people who understand animals! Low prices, and much bigger inside than it looked from the outside! Very disappointed in the customer service at San Mateo Pet Supply. Actually, customer service doesn't exist at this store!!! I have been going to this pet store for the past 5 years mostly out of convenience (location near my house). The prices are high, items are crammed into the store and the people who work there look absolutely miserable. The past two times I went there, I felt as though I was putting someone out to actually ring me up. Today the girl rolled her eyes at me when I came to the counter and said "I am on break, but I guess I'll ring you up" and then did not speak one more word to me, left my credit card receipt in the printer and left!!! I had to ask someone else behind the counter to give me my receipt so that I could sign it!!!!! No thank you, no nothing.....I am through with this place and will never return. read more

And they carry quality food and products that are healthy - not the junk food that so many other pet stores sell these days. I've been trying so support this business for years. However, the products, service, and prices are mediocre at best. To top things off, I took my dogs with me to purchase some treats for them and the girl at the register along with a psychotic fat guy in a suit called the police because I had my dogs in the truck. My slider windows were open, my two fans in the shell were on, my dogs were sitting up and enjoying life as it was 10:15 am, and the temperature IN the shell read 66 degrees. Not a huge selection of treats, gadgets or other pet claptrap, but you can buy horse stuff here which I believe is properly called tack. So I need to buy chicken feed. I have 2 choices near me. I can either go to Half Moon Bay or come here. This place is more convenient to me by a factor of like 10x. So I come here. They've got a pretty big selection of general pet stuff, but what they also have is the less common pet stuff -- like for my chicken childrens. So for that, they get bonus stars. I haven't had to deal much with their staff since I just buy and go, but they seem generally nice enough when I have to interact with them. read more

My positive review is based mostly on the vaccination clinic that is offered here on Sundays. It's quick, efficient, and the price is right. Before shopping around, I always vaccinated my dogs at Banfield Pet Hospital inside the Petsmart in Redwood City. I always felt like I was taking them to "Doggie Kaiser". Banfield even encouraged me to get doggie health insurance the last two times I was there. I had to pay for a physical exam two months in a row, because their bordatella shot was due. Well, I wasn't about to fetch my wallet for a third monthly physical just because my girl dog was in need of her distemper shot in order to be boarded for the holidays. I came upon the clinic through an internet search. $15 vs. $30 for the shot=awesome! On the phone I was instructed to just drop in vs. making an appointment. I brought the dog in, and was led to a back room. The vet appeared experienced, and my dog didn't display any discomfort or even recognition that she'd been pricked by a needle. So simple. Also, I don't think the cashiers or staff are rude. I think that they are genuine and not overly involved in your pet store experience. I've been there before and needed help finding the right harness for my dogs, and they were great. The store itself is much larger than I realized it was. Don't be thrown off by the shabby exterior, this place is great! One star off only because they don't carry my favorite dog food, Prairie, that makes a dog's fur as soft as a chinchilla. read more

Top of the line dog food at the best prices anywhere. Seriously. Always well-stocked and generous with free samples if you are considering a new brand/kind of food. The staff knows their stuff. The manager (I think) comes off a bit rough/unfriendly in demeanor but is actually quite friendly and very knowledgeable. EDIT: you know, I just went there again today and am wrong here: although very knowledgeable, she is, indeed, actually unfriendly which is a shame. All the other people here, though, are very nice. I've also used their do-it-yourself dog wash. Cheap and good, although they could use a bit more by way of available grooming tools. But that's a minor qualm. read more

I was finally compelled to review SMPS after I made the mistake of dropping by Petco to pick up dog food due to convenience. They had my dogs' brand... for $10-12 more for a 30-pound bag. The same was true for the food from which we recently switched them, and for my cats' food. Oh, and SMPS keeps your bar codes and records for the buy-10-get-1-free deal that many of the smaller food companies run, so you don't have to (and at least for me, invariably forget), which makes it an even better deal. For me, getting the same product at a locally owned store for less than the big chains charge makes my decision a no-brainer. Add in a comprehensive selection and (mostly) knowledgeable and helpful employees, and the only time I go to a Petco or PetSmart is when I happen to be right there or I need something after SMPS's 7pm close. Interesting reading the other reviews here. One theme in the negatives is the behind-the-counter dog population. AFAIK, these dogs are rescues and fosters, not the employees' personal animals, but I could be wrong. (I was on the fence about 4 or 5 stars, but the tiebreaker was trying to counteract the negatives.) read more

I love this place- its hard to find pet stores that carry things for guinea pigs or small animals in general but they have so many things for them which is a 5 star in my book because my guinea pigs are like family. I have seen this place many times driving down el camino but i never went in because it looks a little run down but inside it looks amazing!!! So many things for all pets big and small! They carry what seems like every singe Oxbow product, which is my piggies favorite brand. the employees are not too helpful but i always know what i want ahead of time so its not a problem for me. San Mateo Pet Supply is the only pet store I know of that carries EVO 95% chicken & turkey canned cat food. One of my kitties LOVES this food. SMPS has an awesome selection of healthy premium cat foods that you might not find at other places. Prices aren't the lowest but I go here for the premium food selection and availability. The staff, besides the grumpy old lady (avoid her if you can), comprises of really young kids. Sometimes, the young girl doesn't know what she's doing, but the young man is always a pleasure to deal with. He's super friendly. I like this pet shop and my kitties thank me for going there! read more

Excellent supplies, great people, no attitude, FANTASTIC no anesthesia canine teeth cleaning every month (they do a great job and it doesn't cost 650.00!). I buy my dog toys and chicken food there and they have always been helpful, friendly, attentive and seem to genuinely like what they do for a living. I have two tiny chihuahuas and have never, ever had a problem with the dogs behind the counter. I enjoy watching them play! I like this place because I can get what I need; such as wild bird seed, Wellness catfood, and Oxbow timothy pellets for my foster rabbits. I love that the store promotes cat adoption. The only thing I don't like, are when the in-house dogs growl or otherwise act aggressive, and then the staff has to tend to the dogs, i.e. split them up, whatever. My husband was in the other day and he said a dog actually leaped up on the counter to try to get to another dog on the other side. And no, we're not "nervous" - just realistic.
