This review is for take-out slices of the famous coconut cake. First, I'd call and and order in advance, and ask where you should go for pick up, precisely. I knew I was vastly underdressed for a place like that, but I just wanted some cake to go before leaving town. It was on every Charleston must-eat list as I was researching the city for months before my visit. I didn't call ahead and didn't know where to go when my husband dropped me off at the gate. The main entrance looked like the hotel, so I went through the gate, lured by the strung lights on the patio. It looked like magic, and now I definitely want to go back in nice weather for a splurge celebration sometime ($$$$). I didn't see a hostess stand, so I entered a door leading to the bar where, I imagined, take out orders may be placed. I stood, unacknowledged for several minutes before I finally spotted a hostess farther in toward the dining room where people were dressed to the nines!! A wandering couple behind me said, "Oh, dinner jackets mandatory. Let's go." I stood embarrassed in my flip flops but was determined to secure cake. I had to tap the girl on the shoulder to get her attention, but then she was really kind and helpful and seemed to read my mind. She was back in a jiffy with my two slices of the renowned cake for $27. Hey, it's vacation, right?! Well, the to-go bag was super cute, and I read to eat it at room temperature. I waited patiently back at my Airbnb. I took the first bite. It was--creamy and coconutty--and pretty overrated. The outside was not very good, dry cake edges and nearly-burned coconut flakes. They are part of the reason we come back so often (Cassandra, Kory, Joann) well them along with that coconut cake. Some of our favorites to order are the she crab soup, lobster 3 way, and the fried oysters. Most recently, we were there for Christmas dinner. We sat at the bar then too. We booked a private room for a Friday night. The room was very nice, the waiter was amazing. Poor man was trying to take orders and my party of 14 looked like they were playing musical chairs. He maintained his pleasant and charming demeanor throughout this and everyone got the correct food. O.M.G the food here was AH-mazing.. I cannot express how incredible the veal sweatbreads were, they were perfectly fried, super tender and excellently paired with the sauce. My fiancée and her family used to have dinner and cake at the PG for years. I decided to book a reservation on open table for 530 noting we have a severely handicap father with a walker, so please take note. The app did not work. i called the restaurant and they returned my call. They confirmed my reservation. i noted again to the restaurant on the phone we have a father that is severely handicap (recent MAJOR stroke). We dropped our father (my future father in law) and wife off at the front so he could walk in. No one helped him or my fiancés mother as they walked in (stroller). The hostess took them to there table. The hostess decided to put us at the end of the restaurant right in front of the open kitchen, all while his wife felt embarrassed and commented I guess we are getting a tour of the restaurant. My fiancée and I arrived but only when they finally made it to the table. we observed and said why would they make a disabled man with a walker have to go all the way to the end of the restaurant (worse seat in the house) while there were multiple tables in front of the restaurant. We told the waitress how terrible it was to do that and how embarrassing it was. My fiancée was disgusted and voiced her disgust to the hostess. No apologies but oh I can move you to the front. He said to my mother in law, I don't want to do that again so we just sat down. We eventually asked for the general manager. No apologies. He said, we have no record of you indicating you were with a handicap person and no one noted it. I told him I personally spoke to your hostess the previous day and noted the severe disability and again no apology. Bill finally comes. $623 after tip for a group of 4! Thankfully the food was good and the waitress was nice. They did not even offer a complimentary drink. As we got up, my father in law used his walker (Major stroke) as people across the restaurant stared. It was humiliating for him. The staff offered no help yet again. On the way out, I said to the General manager you and your staff outta be a shamed of yourselves for the way you all treated us. No simple apology for not immediately recognizing the fact that my father was severely disabled and not sitting us in front of restaurant? All he said was how is this my fault? that is a direct quote. i said it's not but just apologize for your staff and take ownership of your policies. He again stated we have no record of you making note of your father in law (essentially calling me a liar). Disgusting. Ill be taking my business to a place that respects the disabled. They Get an F on equality and human rights! My advice to management: Treat the disabled and veterans with dignity and respect. Are here with my boyfriend plus a few friends for my birthday. The food and service were amazing! The place is pretty upscale. As soon as anyone leaves the table staff hurried to the table to fold napkins! Even though it feels fancy, the staff isn't snobby or stiff. I think you would be hard pressed to find any flaws. We decided to split the house salad with the green tomato vinaigrette. They brought out two beautiful plates. It was a perfect starter. I went with the Kansas strip with a side of field peas and butterbeans. I really need to make field peas and butterbeans as a staple in my kitchen. People from the north, meaning me, really do not know what they are missing! My wife went with the lamb chops with faro. Once again the plates looked well put together. We decided to jump into the coconut cake and chocolate dessert. You will be happy with either. All I can say is this place exudes class and refined dining in a very comfortable setting. My partners drink came from a glass that was in the fridge covered with Saran Wrap, and then whiskey was poured, and then stirred. As we sat there at the bar... we watched the bartender Corey line up 10-12 low ball glasses... add a cherry, orange peel, white sugar, and bitters to each, then Saran Wrap them individually, and they entered a mini fridge. He said he prepared them ahead of time for the next day. We questioned on it, and he said he would make an old fashioned any way we'd like... so one was made fresh and significantly much better. It's a shame a fine dining establishment would serve something like this to be honest. I just want people to know, so you can avoid this mess. I guess that's the nice thing about sitting at the bar - you can see how your drink is made. But if you're at the table, You're at a loss! Peninsula Grill lives up to its reputation. Went here with my husband for my 40th birthday. We went to dinner around 7pm on a Tuesday evening. The entryway leading into the restaurant was lit and gave a great ambiance. The inside of the restaurant is dim and lit by candles. Service was great. Our server was named Laurent. For our first course, we ordered and shared the chilled wedge of gem lettuce. Because we were sharing, they evenly split the salad between my husband and I. It was very good. It was composed of gem lettuce, fire-roasted tomatoes, stilton blue cheese, bacon, and buttermilk dressing. For our second course, my husband ordered the center cut filet (medium rare) with brandy-peppercon jus and a side of sauteed cipollini onions and mushrooms. I ordered their nightly special: Pan seared halibut with a side of sauteed garlic spinach. Both dishes were AMAZING! The pan-seared halibut was cooked perfectly. It was tender and did not have a fishy taste. My husband took a bite and was impressed because it did not taste fishy. He will only eat seafood if it's fried to the point where you can't taste the fishiness so this meant something. Accompaniments with the pan-seared halibut included succotash with okra and sauteed tiny oyster mushrooms. Again, so devine! For dessert, I ordered the Banana "Panna Cotta" Pudding, which had a mixed texture of bread pudding. It was covered in chocolate ganache. It was very good but filling especially after having two previous dinner courses. My husband got the infamous coconut cake, even though he doesn't like the texture of coconut. Even he was pleasantly surprised at how much he liked it, although he did scrape the back of the cake, which had baked dried coconut pieces. We went here for one of our anniversary dinners and this place is extremely fancy. The food is delicious, we had a lobster risotto dish and a duck entree. The duck was so smooth, it tasted like meat flavored butter, in the best way possible. Perfectly seasoned, excellent sides, and amazing atmosphere. For dessert we got the crème brûlée, and the world-famous coconut pie. They were the best desserts we've ever had ever! My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here and enjoyed drinks at the bar before being seated in the modesty sized dining room. I found the ambiance to be oddly stuffy and formal as if we had been transported to some incarnation of the Old South with its large portraits of antebellum era aristocrats staring at us while we dined. But it was this strange dichotomy that made Peninsula Grill work--a dining experience deeply steeped in Southern tradition while offering decidedly unstuffy dishes with a modern and sophisticated twist. For starters, I had the she crab soup, a quintessential lowcountry offering that was about as good as it gets while my wife had the Lobster "3 Ways." She found the combination of textures and flavors unexpected and delicious. For my main course, I had the duck breast. Fantastic. Multiple dimensions and layers of sweetness from tomatoes, saltiness from the duck and earthiness from mushrooms made each bite an adventure. My wife enjoyed the perfectly seared scallops with gnocchi, which was rich and satisfying. For desert, the coconut cake with coffee appeared to be the obvious choice. It had been selected as one of the best restaurants on the U.S. by TripAdvisor! Shared a salad, which was fine, rib steak, Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes. The steak was so fatty that only half of it was meat. It was well-cooked, but I've had better elsewhere. The Brussels were fried with bacon and apples. Honestly, they were like bar bites at a popular restaurant. The mashed potatoes needed seasoning. The cake was nice and moist, but I bake and it did not knock my socks off. Planters Inn and their restaurant, Peninsula Grill are Relais & Châteaux properties. I follow and book with Relais for a couple of reasons. One is service and the second is more service. The properties in their portfolio are quaint and clean. Every time you turn the corner, you're greeted by staff who are doing everything they can to help and provide service that goes beyond expectations and the Planters Inn staff were exactly that... more than accommodating. Being guests of the hotel, we stopped by the Peninsula Grill for a cocktails and dessert after dinner one evening. Our first night there, we had a nice dinner and the bar was beautiful, so wanted to stop by again for a nightcap. We walked in and the restaurant was half full, every table in the bar was available, as well as every table outside. We asked to be seated and we were refused service. They said we couldn't be seated until 9:00 pm, it was 7:55 pm. As anyone would respond, I simply reminded them that their restaurant is half full, and that every table was available in the bar as well as every table outside... we we were still turned away. I'm one who understands policies and procedures, but this made zero sense. We are guests of the property and paying a premium for one of their suites. We are were a captive audience, their guests, and happily so. To receive zero accommodation except, "you can order it to go" was absurd, to say the least. i would have given the property a 5 star rating if our experience wasn't so poor in the Peninsula Grill. read more

I visited Peninsula for a special occasion dinner and it didn't disappoint. While it a little difficult to order the glass of red wine in the crowded bar while we waited for our table, I generally assume a crowd is a fortuitous sign of something special to follow. I began my meal with the Lobster Three Way and I have to say this is probably one of the BEST bites in all of Charleston. Lobster ravioli, lobster tempura, and sauteed lobster in a flavorful stack that is mind-blowing. I'm not sure why this dish isn't getting more press. I followed that with an entree of diver scallops that were no doubt delicious, but not in the same surprising way as the lobster appetizer. I want to tell you what my husband ordered, but I can't because I was so enamored with my own plates. He gave high marks to whatever it was. We, of course, finished the meal with the famous coconut cake. It was good. Was it Taste of Cake's coconut cake (Atlanta, GA)? No. Overall, the service here is incredible. There's ample staff waiting to attend to your every need. The food has REALLY high points and high points. The restaurant itself feels a bit country-clubbish and stuffy with the one large open room reminiscent of a conference space. An effort to modernize might bring in fresh faces and a new generation of diners. The paintings are of the kind where the eyes follow you before they murder you in your sleep.
