I have been here a couple of times. I can't really say I find this place up to par with some of the 5 star ratings received here. I guess I'm spoiled having lived in New Jersey (state of diners) and in the part of Jersey right across the Hudson river from NYC. So I've been exposed to a lot of good food. The food is okay, that's it, definitely nothing to write home about. They are pricey. I guess since the place is extremely small, they have to hike up the prices to compensate for the limited number of people that can be served. In the summer, the air conditioners are loud and intrusive to certain tables. It is definitely better and cleaner than Wagner's across the street, though. Although Wagner's does have cheap prices, it also serves cheap food. The service is nondescript. read more

This is a great little place! The Wagner across the street gets the crowds, but I prefer the Penn Yan Diner. Tiny, adorable dining car style joint with a friendly staff. This morning our omelets were perfect. Hers was with tasty home fries, mine was with a side of great, home made corned beef hash. Wow. Fresh veggies and cheese in a soft eggy envelope. Somebody in this kitchen really knows what they're doing. I've only had breakfast here, but I owe it to my stomach to try more on the menu. Tiny, cute, friendly little diner recommended by our hosts during a visit. We had lunch, and the specials were a salmon blt and a Guinness-infused brat in a pretzel bun- pretty ambitious for a diner. So we had both along with the onion soup. And coconut cream pie, which is my favorite. Cuz ya gotta have pie at a diner. It was a cute little place, a good value and worth a visit. Oh Man! I'm not from the area but was passing through and my friends and I really wanted to find a diner. When we passed the front of it, we were a bit hesitant because it looked kinda of small and dingy. This however was a 'don't judge a book by its cover' kinda deal. The place was small but the food was of epic proportions! I got the big Sean and asked for my bacon and homefries to be crispy. My food came out just as I wanted it. Everything tasted phenomenal and I think is by far the best breakfast I've ever eaten. The low price made it all the much better. I only wish that I had a Penn Yan Diner closer to where I live! I grew up in the Finger Lakes region and love coming here every time I visit home. This diner is the perfect place to visit for locals and tourists alike as it encompasses local culture so well accompanied by excellent food. I love retro diners like this that are lovingly maintained and serve food with pride. Pretty red and white exterior. Service is fast and friendly. Lots of choices on the menu. I enjoyed a grilled ham and cheese with tangy slaw and my wife had "Grandma's" salmon burger which she loved. The interior has the old style row of low stools facing the grill, and there are 4-5 tables on the left side when you enter. Hours are only from 7:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. but breakfast is served at all open hours.For diner fans, this is a must visit! read more

It's small, only a handful of tables and several counter seats. The food was pretty good - l had the 2 egg omelet with a side of home fries. Traveling through the state on a Sunday & needed to stop for lunch. Penn Yan Diner was pretty much the only place open nearby so we decided to check it out. Score!! Got the "crisp" (home fries & corned beef hash) & sausage gravy with biscuits. Delicious!! And even the coffee was fabulous, which I did not expect. (I'm a coffee snob. True confession...I'm a spoiled city girl.) Everyone who works there was welcoming, pleasant & provided excellent, quick service. We sat at the counter right by the register so I got to hear the cashier (I'm guessing she's an owner?) chat everyone up as they cashed out. When it was our turn she said, "where are you from". Lol. Either we are obvious out-of-towners or she knows everyone who comes in...or both. We even enjoyed reading the silly signs & watching the line cooks.
