Terrible terrible service. Last time I was there I waited 3hours for an oil change. This time I made an appointment online 24hours in advance for 8am. They call me the 40 minutes before my appointment and said they had to cancel it because they only had 1 technician who already has an 8am apt. I asked what other openings they had and they said they were booked for the day. I am NEVER satisfied with my services here. It's a waste of my time. After this incident I have finally decided that I will never go here again and will warn everyone I can before they bring their car here. read more

Untrustworthy and unfortunately the technician did more damage than repair to my daughter's BMW on what should have been a regular maintenance. Had to take it to BMW to get their mistakes repaired. He managed to damage parts he had no business touching. Her car has a large scratch in the passengers side door and BMW is still working to repair all of the other damage their "master tech" did to the car. RUN AWAY!!!!! read more

I needed a new battery for my aging car, and I saw online that Pep Boys sold a cheap battery for $80. It was only guaranteed for 24 months but my car already has 150K miles on it, and I figure another 2 years is about all I'll get from it. The battery had good reviews online so I figured it was cheap but probably not a dud. When I asked for a new battery, the salesperson didn't even mention the cheaper battery, just the more expensive option. When I asked about the cheaper one, she first said they probably didn't have it, then said they did but that it was being discontinued. She strongly implied that it had no guarantee (contrary to what the company's website says) and that it probably wouldn't last 6 months. She worked very, very hard to steer me away from the option that had brought me into the store to begin with. I found it extremely off-putting. Go here if you know what you want and are willing to stand your ground in the face of strong upselling pressure. If you want a pleasurable consumer experience, though, go elsewhere. read more

CAUTION DO NOT TRUST I was given an estimate for a water pump and thermostat replacement for almost 1,000.00 I told the woman that it work be cheaper for me to tow my truck back to New Jersey and have it repaired there. She called me back and revised the estimate to 640.00 I gave her the go ahead to fix. Upon picking up my truck, the total was over 900.00 I was told that the 640.00 was only for the water pump repair and didn't include the thermostat. Pep Boys damaged my vehicle during a basic tire installation. Come to find out, the Chapel Hill, NC location damages their customers' cars on a fairly regular basis because they have outdated, unsafe lifts and equipment. The local manager was nice enough to work with, however the claims department is refusing to cover the collision waiver on the rental car, even though they have done it for other customers. Claims says if something happens to the rental car while my car is at the body shop, I just have to use my own insurance - pay the deductible, have my rates go up - even though I only need the rental because of their negligence. Do not come here for an inspection, they don't know which vehicles need which type of of inspection. They charged me for an emission inspection and insisted that I needed it, even though my vehicle is exempt from it. I don't know how you could possibly be certified to do vehicle inspections without knowing what inspection is required. September 7th, 2017 We purchased and installed tires at the Chapel Hill location. My wife got a screw in the tread. She brought it in to get a plug installed. Chris, who was handling the intake, told her that Pep Boys has been getting sued for plugs coming out. She said he made some reference to sidewalls. This screw was in the tread. He sent her away! I won't return there again. She went to Lloyd Tire and Alignment down by the Bolin Creek. They fixed it in twenty minutes. Extremely lucky and thankful to have gone to this place. We were visiting the area and our sliding door to the mini van opened by accident. This is a red alert because the last time that happened it was stuck, forced closed, and shattered the back window. Chaotic last time, and heart stopping scary when the door suddenly opened today. Went to the closest place, the Pep Boys. They are an incredible team, and saved the day. I took my car in for what I thought would be a $24.99 oil change and a $30 inspection. The oil change ended up being $40 due to the fine print (it only includes 5 liters of oil - was told my Camry needed 7 - and a filter UP TO $3.29 - was told the one for my Camry was $10). Ok. Whatever. My car failed the inspection because my tires needed to be replaced. This was legit. What was NOT legit was the fact one of my tires, by some strange coincidence, went flat within a few hours of leaving. Highly suspect. I noticed they hadn't replaced the valve cap, but I wasn't able to figure out what happened beyond that and neither was the AAA technician that came out. My overall experience was pretty frustrating. The $24.99 oil change definitely felt like a bait and switch, which isn't cool. It wasn't the worst experience I've ever had, but I won't be back. read more

I normally go here to get my oil changed and I am in and out in less than a hour. They also have a nice waiting room with free wifi and coffe/tea. I always use their 19.99 oil change coupon online. I have one negative, normally when I use the 19.99 oil change coupon they charge me $10 extra because my car takes "more quarts of oil" but this time the manager said my car doesn't take extra oil and only charged me $19.99. I would recommend that you make sure you know your car and don't let them take advantage of you. read more

This pep boys is great! I have been to a couple other ones in the past in a different state and they were always rude to me and treated me like I was dumb. However, at this location, everyone is so nice, the pricing is reasonable, and the service is quick. They have the AC on full blast during the summer so the waiting room feels great, but there are also some nice locations within walking distance to go relax and work while you wait. Oeo Boys Chapel Hill, NC. Worst ever. Brought car in for Check Engine Light. Charged me $90, to inform me that I needed thermostat and sensor. They couldn't figure it out. $600 for these 2 items. They then Inspected the car and told me it failed, because of the code. Are these assholes really working on cars? Either they are scammers or just stupid!! Charged me with the Inspection also. So went to AutZone, bought a sensor for $24.00 and installed it in 15 minutes. Go anywhere else !!!! read more

I went for a diagnostic on car. I asked for them to list the codes and every detail of what they found because I needed it to run a warranty. They gave me a paper that they said it was it and turns out it was not and and I called them and all they said was "sorry" and hung up. Least to say, I did pay them $120 for it. read more

It was late in the day and I had a flat tire. I took off the tire, put in the donut, and started calling repair shops. One after another told me they were closing up for the day and couldn't help me. This Pep Boys location agreed to stay open and help me even though the technicians had clocked out and changed their clothes. They waited for me, fixed my tire, and took good care of me. Overpriced - Don't trust them blindly. They tried to charge me $800 for what I was able to get done for $200 at F&F in Carrboro. They wanted to charge me $400 for a part I was able to buy online for $36. They wanted to charge me another $400 for labor, which F&F in Carborro would charge me $170 for. It only takes a half hour, so I might even do it myself. They wanted to overcharge me $600! Do a little research and get a second opinion. They do have a great waiting room with coffee and wifi though. read more

1 star for one particular salesperson named Sam, and 5 stars for Angie. I had my brakes fixed, and when I got home, noticed the front wheel was missing both a lug nut and hub cap. Went back to Pep Boys. Angie (who is wonderful) was able to find one of the lug nuts. When I told Sam about this however, he placed the blame on us saying the hub cap was "already really loose" and was basically bound to fall off. No attempt at an apology was made, which was really the only thing I was looking for at that moment. Angie however made up for the experience and sincerely apologized, saying that she would refund the cost of new hub cabs once we bought them. I appreciated that very much. A mistake was made, which happens. I really just hoped Sam and the mechanic he spoke to would own up to it and apologize, instead of putting the blame back on us. Poor customer service on his part, but 5 stars for Angie for making up for it. read more

Went to get a quote on a wheel bearing hub assembly... they wrote 350 plus labor... the part is 102.99 at auto zone and another mechanic charge 90 dollars for labor. Took my volvo there to get inspected, it failed. Who knew that when your headlights get the foggy graininess on the lenses your car can fail inspection. So for $49 they buffed them back to show room quality. I have had it done somewhere else with less than stellar results. Thanks guys read more

Rip off of a place. Charge you $100 to diagnose your car. My car had the engine light on and they charged me to tell me I need spark plugs and coils changed and estimated me $400 for that. When I went to get my car, I noticed a quite large scrape on the left bumper of my car. I notified the man behind the counter and he said they would review the cameras and notify me. That was 3 days ago. Called the place today and spoke with the manager and still waiting on them to get back to me. The scrape was not there when I left the car, I drive a Mini Cooper. It is quite difficult to scratch a car that short. Learned my lesson about pep boys and never coming here. read more

By 3:54 pm I had not been given a call to tell me either it was done ,or needed to be kept over night. I tried to call immediately, but got no answer. I ran over a giant screw with my one year old car. Extremely annoying! I made it back home to Chapel Hill and tried removing the screw by turning it, hoping the tire wouldn't be perforated. The hissing air indicated otherwise. As I did not want to drive on a flat tire the next day, I immediately went to Pep Boys at 6:30 PM. I planned to leave my car there over night as they close at 7 PM and I did not expect them to fix my tire right away. They said they'd take a look and I waited a few minutes. When I asked the clerk after 10 minutes where things stood, he told me that they were fixing it right then. To my great surprise the tire was repaired within 15 minutes and I was back on the road well before 7PM. I was shocked, in the most positive way, about this service at lightning speed! My daughter bought 2 tires from PepBoys a year ago, car started shimmying recently. We discovered that one of the tires had raised lumps on it, our mechanic said it was a defective tire. When we called the PepBoys, they acknowledged that the tire was defective. They said it was a cheap tire and that they would do nothing about it. We found them to be very unprofessional and disorganized when we bought the tires initially and very unconcerned about the fact they had sold us a defective tire. Needless to say, we will never patronize them again and we encourage everyone to stay away from this place. read more

We have tire and wheel protection through Safe-Guard, so we were sent to Pep Boys when we ran over a nail and ended up with a flat tire. It was the first time we have been to the one here in Chapel Hill. Amber helped us and was amazing. Update to previous review. My first experience at this Pep Boys was very good however my second experience was a joke. Just needed a new tire (provided by me) mounted and balanced and a new valve stem because the old valve stem was broken and leaking air. The tire was mounted on the rim and balanced ok but the mechanic DIDN'T PUT ON THE NEW VALVE STEM I PAID FOR AND SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED TO BE REPLACED. I didn't realize this till the next day when I walked out and saw that the tire was flat. I took it back and they replaced the CORE of the valve stem but not the valve stem itself because the tire was already mounted and I guess that would have been too much trouble for them. As a result I had invested not only the cost of the service but also the trouble of taking the wheel up there twice to get it done right. Was offered no refund or credit. Don't bother going to this Pep Boys on the weekend because no one is working in the shop. Don't get tire service at Pep Boys because they're over priced and they can do proper installation either. read more

I WILL NEVER SET MY FOOT IN THIS STORE!!! THEY ARE DISHONEST! I needed to do the annual inspection. I thought this is something simple and my car is well maintained so I took it to this Pep Boys store to avoid the long wait in Toyota. They failed my steering mechanism, saying something leaked, and it's safety issue. They wanted to charge over $300 to fix it and about $100 for alignment. I only trust Toyota to repair my car so I took it to my usual Toyota store. Guess what? Technicians there said they didn't spot any problem and passed me on the spot! In another words, Pep Boys wanted to charge me $400+ for nothing. A very unethical business and I will definitely not return nor recommend it to anyone. read more

They preform a quick-ish oil change and the staff is typically pretty friendly! However, I would suggest that you get a second opinion on any work they say is needed to be done on your car. They told me that both of my front axles were "busted and leaking grease," and that it would be a $1,000 repair. When I got a second opinion at another shop, they showed me the "damage," which was really that my oil pan was leaking. Tread carefully! read more

Hello, every body: You should make your right decision to choose a good mechanic shop. Pep Boys in East Franklin/Chapel Hill must NOT your first choice and it should not earn any star. When the merchant sees my review, he would reply the comment asking to followup....I doubt if Pep Boy will stop the dishonest way earning someone who lack of mechanical knowledge. Upon a State annual inspection one Sunday morning, Pep Boys demanded my daughter for a "so call" fixes. The fixes included two wind shield vipers ($36) that I had replaced a week ago, two items xxx fix ($900) that I had completed month ago (I paid hundreds dollar). Pep Boys said to the college girl that your car was failed and you HAVE to leave your car and fix it. They ask for 1000 dollars. She did not know what to do, but call me to discuss. Of course, she left without problem but paid $24 for the unsatisfied service. Pep Boys should not demand leaving a car and trying to earn some money in a dirty way. The car was passed inspection somewhere else in the same day. Pep Boys is on my own black list now! read more
