No bells and whistles here, but they get the job done at a reasonable cost. I had an oil change and some bizarre one-way bolts removed from my rear license plate. They took care of both tasks, and as far as I can tell, that's all they did. I asked if my tire pressure was checked, which is pretty standard for an oil change, and they said that this is part of the service, but when I got back to my car the tires were still low. I didn't want to deal with waiting again, so I just decided to take care of it myself at a gas station. They also took longer than promised, which would have been annoying if there wasn't a Home Depot conveniently located right next door. read more

I had called there on last Friday to see if they would help with putting on my license plates and the guy said no problem. I didn't have time to do it Friday so I went first thing today (Monday morning). The check out girl was trying to help me and told me no they don't do that anymore because they got sued over it a couple of years ago. I gave her the guys name from Friday. They claim they rotate tires for free with oil change. They will mark down they did but when you have one tire that doesn't match its quite clear when it hasn't been done. I dismissed this every time i got an oil change since it was free. the last time i came in for an oil change the truck wouldn't accelerate when i got back in it to leave. The manager I talked to, I believe was Chris, tried to give me back my truck inoperable and tell me it wasn't their fault! ( was running fine when I brought in for an oil change), inoperable after oil change with them! After quite a while he finally said he would call his manager. (after I threatened to call corporate if he didn't fix this) Never been back , shouldn't have went back after 3 oil changes with no tire rotation as they claimed. read more

After seeing my review on Yelp, the new manager, John, contacted me and offered to replace my struts at no charge to me. I brought my car in and they did the work as promised. I would give four or five stars but I can't because of so much of my time that was wasted getting to this point. I laugh remembering an episode from the Simpsons Treehouse of horror when the Pep Boys come to life as advertising monsters, only to have to drag their huge heavy metal heads! Ha ha ha! Besides, I think the third Pep Boy is kind of handsome. Not that I would go here for Auto Repair based on past reviews, but not that any of the categories offered describe Auto Parts Shopping, and Self Auto Repair. I write this review simply on the selection, and value of the PARTS store area. We came looking for an oil filter, and motor oil. The process was easy, and with the store layout it was no problem for us to find what we were looking for without having to ask a rep. Easy to use catalogs assisted us to pick out the right oil filter for our vehicle. Again I'll mention the awesome selection! Anything you would need to pimp your ride, do self repairs, and more. They sell gasoline electric generators, and lawn mowing equipment. They almost seem to border into a hardware type shop for any motor type piece of equipment. One thing that was very striking was the large black loss prevention camera orbs. I felt like I was in a Star Wars Movie, and if I did something shifty these black orbs would detach themselves and float down to inject me or deliver a stunning shock. Then Stormtroopers would run out, and take me away for questioning! LOL, Overall this was a positive experience. read more

I came in to get a brake light bulb replaced. The gentleman helped me locate it immediately. I ask if someone can put it in as I needed to get back on the highway. 7 people were standing behind the counter doing nothing. Since we can't give zero stars, I will accept that this one star represents the trouble that was saved because this Pep Boys was (1) open and (2) located in front of where my oil pressure light suddenly turned on on a Sunday afternoon. I wanted to drive to Jiffy Lube when the light went on, but my owners manual said not to drive with the low oil pressure light on at all bcs it could be causing severe engine damage. So, I drove into Pep Boys... This place is a disaster... The only bright spot was the guy that worked on my car was semi friendly. I was told I would be in/out in 1-1.5 hrs max. I had no other options, so I waited. It was over 1.5 hours before my car was even pulled in for service. It was more than 2 hours after checking in that my car was completed. I've never had an oil change take more than 30 mins to do the actual work. It was ridiculous. I tried getting status updates from the people at the counter. They were unfriendly and unhelpful. I won't bore you with all of the things that made the interaction bad. Just save yourself the trouble and don't go here. Oh and they didn't put a label on my windshield telingn me when to get my next oil change. In the 15 yrs I've been driving, I've never left an oil change w/out a reminder sticker. Bizarre. read more

I hate Pep Boys. Let me reiterate that for you... I. Hate. Pep. Boys. Always have, always will. My father swears by them, so as long as my car was in his name - we took it where he wanted to. But I'll be damned if I ever step foot in this place again. It seems that every time I had a small, simple problem, they'd fix it within hours and have it back to me by the end of the day only for us to turn around and drop it right back in their parking lot because now something much larger and much less simple was wrong. I recall spending roughly $600 to have my brakes fixed about 2 years ago. I had the exact same service done at Velasquez this year and it cost me LESS than $300. That's Pep Boys for ya. And if you try and tell me they have a warranty to back t hat $600 purchase I made...yep. A 2 year warranty. Convenienently enough, that warranty always falls JUST short of when I need to get it fixed again. No thank you. read more

I walked in for my 2:00 appointment and there were two counters -- I wasn't sure which one to go to, and the man at the front counter made such a lazy and subtle motion with his thumb, without eye contact, that I had no idea that he was trying to tell me to go to the other counter. After I confirmed, the man at the other counter checked the list for the cars ahead of me and told his co-worker in Spanish -- "3 cars, so an hour." Then he told me in English, "There are 3 cars in front of you, so it'll take us half an hour." I thought maybe I misheard what he told his co-worker since Spanish isn't my first language, but it turns out that after 3 years of working in Cicero as a schoolteacher, I need to give myself more credit. I waited an hour with no update. I went back to the counter and was told that there were still 2 cars ahead of me and it would still be half an hour more. At 3:35, over an hour and a half past my appointment time, again, with NO update, I asked for my keys back. I got no apology. They didn't care. When I picked 1 star for my review, Yelp asked me to keep in mind that it's COVID and businesses are trying their best, but looking at the other reviews here even from before COVID, I'd say you're better off going somewhere else. read more

I purchased new headlight bulbs here and went home to attempt the self-install. When I saw that the auto body shop that repaired my front end used rivets instead of screws to attach the undercarriage of the wheel wells I figured that I'd need the use of tools that I did not own in order to finish the job so I called and set up an appointment. When I told the guy behind the counter what I was there for he walked out to the parking lot and installed them by hand using some impressive arm contortions. So instead of having to wait in some terrible line, I got the bulbs installed for free and in no time! I wish I would have asked his name but the guy who helped me was younger, had his car wrecked by some a-hole in a Mercedes and was from Florida. If a manager or corporate ever reads this you need to give this employee a raise! read more

The female sales cashier was super RUDE! I wanted to just yell at her for being so bit@hy! Ok, my reveiew went from a 2 to a 4 when i was helped by the service guy Chris. I left without getting my car fixed the first time because i was so annoyed by the cashier. But 20 mins later I went back after refusing to give up because of one evil devil spawn. The service guy Chris was super nice and helpful. He was able to find the problem with my car and fix it in 10 mins! My wait time to have the work done was pretty short considering they were pretty swampped. Pretty much was in and out. So far haven't had a bad experience and he is very friendly and knowledgeable. I have always had great experiences with this Pep Boys location, and honestly I'm surprised to see so much negative feedback here. The option to make an appointment online is very convenient, and while I've sometimes had to wait a bit, it has always seemed like a reasonable amount of time to me. Then again, I always make sure to schedule my appointments on days when I don't need the car back in a hurry. As a young woman with almost no understanding of cars, I often worry that I will be talked down to by mechanics, and I've certainly had that happen to me in the past. However, I NEVER have that issue at this location. Any of the employees I've interacted with treat me with kindness and respect, and break down the information I need in a way that is easy to understand without being condescending or patronizing. I have an older car with quite a few miles on it, so sometimes multiple problems pop up at a time. What I most appreciate about this location is that the employees help me prioritize the repairs - what needs to be taken care of soon, what can be put off for a bit, what isn't really that big of a deal, and so on. I have never felt taken advantage of, or like they just want as much of my money as they can get. It would be easy to tell me that every little thing is an emergency situation, but they are honest about what can and can't wait. I'd like to make a special shout out to Joe, who walked me through my most recent set of problems in a clear and straightforward way. He helped me understand what was going on, didn't make me feel bad for putting off a replacement that should have been taken care of 60,000 miles ago, and even gave me some coupons to help soften the financial blow when I decided to get it all taken care of that day. Extremely rude customer service. Went an hour and a half before close with a flat to be told they weren't taking anymore cars for the night. The guy was reluctant to even put some air in my tire. When asked if they had a suggestion of where else to go he said he had none but I could wait until Monday or Tuesday and they would be able to do it there. My husband called the store to be told we could get it done tomorrow. We went elsewhere. No need to be rude to customers in need. read more

This was almost the most horrible experience I have had just about anywhere. No one likes taking their car in to get fixed, because it's a) and pain in the butt and b) expensive. I waited in line for 15 minutes while other employees floated in and out, not bothering to ask if anyone needed assistance or opening up additional lines. When I finally got up to the front to ask about whether or not they could do my repair, not only was the guy the most RUDE human being I have ever come into contact with, he pretty much never even looked at me while we were speaking- instead, he was more interested in helping other customers in line behind me. He then told me there was NO way I could have it fixed that day, even though it was still pretty early, and that I had to leave my car overnight and they MIGHT look at it in the morning. At that point I literally turned on my heel, walked out, and headed over to Midas on Clybourn, where I got the best service ever. I broke my serpentine belt on my way to work this morning and this Pep Boys was the closest auto parts store to the Loop. I'm so used to the over and above service in my home town. We pre-ordered the parts online. When we got there.... Not one hello or how can I help. The guy grunted... "You ordered online? I think there was a problem with the belt" what problem, I asked? He just walked away. After yelling at a few employees not to touch his register from across the store, he came back and threw the belt on the counter. I said don't forget the tool we ordered with it. He just looked at me and said, just wait, I'm not done. He brings the tool back and rings it up saying I cannot use my pep boys rewards number. I just want to fix the car and go home. Super disappointed in my visit to Pep Boys for a broken headlight. The guy at the counter gave some effort attempting to help us find the right replacement bulb. The guy who came out to see how hard it would be to fix, just kept telling us how to fix it while we were only asking for an appointment to have it fixed. In the time it took for all the research (which we ultimately found in our manual) and looking at the car, I'm sure the bulb could have been replaced. I called AutoZone, who were super friendly and accommodating and returned the bulb to PepBoys. When I initially brought my vehicle in , I thought "not bad" on the service and wait time. Of course I was the only one there to wait on and the garage was quiet also. So pretty quick on my radiator check and off I go on my trip only to have my engine seize from overheating not 3 hours away. I tried to drive it slowly ,nursing it along as I was in the middle of nowhere ,the nearest auto repair with a tow service was 150 miles away.. Thinking it was a fluke, brought my other car in for some work ,(they were walking distance from me)I told them what I needed done , I don't have a garage or lifts but apparently those don't help these guys anyway. That car never did run right after their repairs ,they kept telling me there was a mysterious electrical problem following a battery ,alternator and belt replacement. The battery was a $150 Bosch ,best they had , I don't skrimp. Finally just sold that car with full disclosure ,I stupidly trusted their diagnosticians..bought another import..that too soon needed a battery ,damn chicago extremes. Again, I bought another Bosch from Pepboys and they installed it -also big bucks, soon after the car wouldn't start if it sat for a few days. I dealt with it almost all winter ,AAA came out with a tester when I called for a jump and told the guy he was wasting time and sure enough , the battery was defective , it had a bad cell!! He printed out the diagnosis. Changed that battery and not another problem! Oh and I did not bring I back to those butchers..did it myself.. Then I thought about the other car with it's mystery electrical crap...The Bosch's were likely old sitting on the shelf or a defective batch and I wasted ALL of that time , money and frustration , not to mention being stranded on the coldest days...I wasn't going to bother posting , but if this helps one person from the unbelievable stupidity that I dealt with , it's worth it. Go ANY where else for auto repair and parts!!! And save your rebuttal , I shouldn't have to ,as a customer , bring my car to get the battery tested when you sold it to me and installed it.....twice!!!! Came in with my new born baby to get a flat tire fixed and after waiting about 10 minutes the guy at the counter asks what I needed help with and proceeded to tell him that I needed my tire replaced because it was unsalvageable and he then proceeds to tell me that they were closing in 20 minutes and couldn't fix it til the next day. Ridiculous right?! Since I had a new born and needed to get home. I don't remember the bald guys name, I'm sure he was Hispanic but don't worry I'll go back just for his name. Wish I could give them 0 stars...called to see how long it would take to remove a screw from a tire. I told them that i could only be gone for an hour from work and they told me it should take about 20 minutes. Got there like 10 minutes later and was told that it was now an hour and a half. Seriously?! Get your shit together guys! There are 12 of you standing around gawking and only 4 out of the 10 spots in the garage were taken! Will not be going back to Pep Boys for any future tire purchases or work. Even though I had the tire replacement plan for my tires here there is a place next to Cafe Bolero on Western (close to Fullerton). $3 and 10 minutes later tire fixed no problem. This place is great! I went in on a Sunday to try and get the broken power antenna on my Toyota 4Runner fixed. Mike at Pep Boys spent over 20 mins diagnosing my problem, walking me through possible solutions, and trying to fix the problem himself. Mike made two separate trips out to my car to try and fix the antenna right then and there. He eventually was able to get the antenna to 90% functionality... for free! I'm really happy with my experience at Pep Boys on Elston. I'll be going there for as long as I live in the city. read more

SHADY!!! DO NOT GO HERE!!! These guys tried to charge me $1,200 when no work needed to be done to the car at all! Our check engine light came on so we took it in to for a diagnostic. I told my wife it was probably a loose gas cap as this has happened in the past and when the light came on I noticed the cap was not tightened completely. We dropped off our car Saturday night and they said they would have a diagnosis in the morning. We got a call in the AM and they said they needed to get prices for repair parts from the dealership and they were closed until Monday. Monday rolls around and I call in around noon as I have not heard any news. I was told they didn't call yet and they would get me the price right away. I get a call at 3:30PM and the the clerk says the fix was going to be costly. He said we had a cracked fuel canister and there were multiple parts needed to fix the problem. He went through the items and repair costs and even said we needed new front tires. I said "we don't need tires, I just got new ones less than a year ago." He said "oh, well you can wait on those." His total was $1,200 to fix the problem. Something felt shady so we took it in for another opinion. Our car had a part recall a month before this all started so my wife said "let's take it to the dealer to see if it's a related issue." So she took it in and the dealership gave me a call later in the day to tell me there is NO PROBLEM with the car and it was a LOOSE GAS CAP that caused the light to go on! Pep Boys tried to screw me for $1,200 when there was no problem at all. DO NOT GO HERE!!! read more

Had a flat and took it to Pep Boys...They were slow as molasses but the tire is fixed and they didn't charge me. The only thing that I was concerned about prior to them doing the tire replacement was the fact they top off your fluids prior to doing anything to the car. I didn't know that at the beginning and when I saw the hood up, I freaked out. The customer service guy never mentioned they top off fluids prior to doing anything to your car. Anyway, the service went without a hitch. If I encounter a problem with the tire, I will be sure to update my review. Right now, so far so good! read more

Is it possible to rate something with no stars? This place is the biggest bunch of scam artists and ripp-er off-ers. I had my car towed here the other day because the power died on it and I didn't know where else to take it being fairly new to the area. Before we had it towed, we took the battery out and had that checked - it was fine. So towed away my car went. I showed up at this place the next day to find out the status of what was going on with it. I agreed for them to run their $89.95 diagnostic service to see what the problem was. About an hour later they called me up to the counter to let me know my car needed $650. worth of repair done on it just to get it up and running again. I thought 'you got to be kidding me!' They were able to jump start it to pull it into the garage, so it couldn't have been that bad. They tried to tell me I needed new battery cables, that I had a gasket leak that was leaking onto a wire, and that I needed a tune-up. I knew that I had a tune-up less than 30K miles ago, so there was no way I needed another one. I asked the guy what of the items I only needed to get done today to get the car back on the road. He told me I needed all of them. I was shocked. I called my husband and after reading yelp reviews, told me to immediately get the car out of that place and take it over to Nal's (which is closer to my house anyway). I paid them their ridiculous $89.95 and took my car over to Nal's. I will never go to that place again. read more

I needed 4 new tires and I thought I needed new breaks. I called pep boys for a quote on 4 tires and made an appt. Then i called just tires; they beat pep boys price. I made an appt with just tires. I spent 30 minutes in the phone and saved nearly $75 for 4 new tires installed. I set my appt for Saturday 9:00 am. I got there at 8:50. There was a line for service by the time they opened the doors at 9:00. Make an appt ahead of time. They worked on my car and I went to target. An hour later I came back and saw my car on the lift. I asked the mechanic if he could show me my rotors and brakes and he explained everything to me. He showed me that I did not need brakes or rotors. Saved me ~$500. Well, I've read the reviews of a lot of the unhappy customers on here and of course each persons experience is different. I, on the other hand hand an excellent experience and feel comfortable recommending them to anyone I know. I had an issue with my rear wheel bearing making grinding noises. I am familiar with this issue yet don't have the mechanical confidence to complete the repair myself. I initially went somewhere else to get a diagnostic of the issue and an attempt for the repair. well as I said I have knowledge of car repairs and so on. so I was very surprised when I was told that a 2 hour repair for the wheel bearing assembly would be $1100. I got my car back and left. Did some research for equipment cost (yes OEM) and came across this pepboys location. I had been there before for others things but I don't believe any automobile service. I spoke with Rashad to set up the appointment we spoke for about 10 minutes about my desire the issue with the car and what the equipment and labor would cost. I didn't mention the pricing from the other location. He told me it would be less then half the amount I got from the other location. I matched the assembly's manu.. part # to see if there was a difference in the equipment each location was offering.Turns out the exact same part. Set the appointment with pep boys. Came in on the day of my appointment spoke with Rashad face to face went over that issue and some other things i was interested in. He was very professional and customer friendly. i was told it would be about a 2 hour job. once the car was up on the jack and the wheel was removed I was offered to come out to the car so they could show me what was going on. Fernando was the one who worked on my car. He and Rashad both pointed out the issue with the assembly, what problems it would cause and why it should be replaced. Backing up for a second, the other location indicated a few other problems with the car including swaybar and struts both of which they said needed to be replaced. I visually inspected both the swaybar and struts and asked both their opinion on them. Once again they told me what to look for in problems with the sway bars, and the struts. they indicated that they was normal wear on them and at this time they didn't require replacement. All and all, the service was completed in a little over 2 hours. I witnessed the old part being removed and Fernando showed me where the ware on the it was. My experience at this location was excellent in regards to customer service. I appreciated both men taking the time to explain to me from top to bottom what was involved in the repair. I feel comfortable saying I will bring my vehicle back to them in the future. Understanding that the automobile service industry can often be filled with unscrupulous establishments I have to say my visit to this pep-boys location was as smooth and upfront as I could expect it to be. Good luck to the next individual that visits the location. Ask for Rashad at the desk and Fernando to do the work, and ask them to explain the steps involved and even show you what they're doing if your so inclined. They went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable with the service I was having performed on my car. I'm sure they'll do the same for you! read more

I had a not-so-great experience at this location with a scheduled oil change. Not likely to go back. I don't usually leave reviews, but this experience stayed with me all day for some reason and I wanted to let other people know about it. This was by far the longest I've ever waited for a routine oil change. My "appointment" was at 2 PM. I arrived at 1:50 PM, but had to stand around for 15 minutes to be seen by a tech and drop off my keys. I then sat in an empty waiting room for over an hour before getting up at 3:15 to investigate. I found my car parked out front. I returned to the desk and asked the tech if my car was ready, he said he was just finishing the paperwork. I finally paid and got my car back at 3:25 PM. The price was essentially what I expected, but I did notice a mysterious "shop fee" on my invoice for $2.50. Ordinarily, I wouldn't care (it's such a small amount and all) but I was already a little upset about the long wait, so I thought I'd mention it. The one positive thing I can say (and the reason I put two stars instead of one) is that the tech didn't come back to me and tell me I needed get a bunch of other services done. A lot of the other lube chains are guilty of that, which is one of the reasons I thought I'd try PepBoys. I'll keep looking. Bottom line, I'm not impressed. While other places may try to up-sell, at least they get the job done in a jiffy. read more

This has been consistently one of the worst parts stores I have ever been to. After this Sunday, I will never step foot into any Pep Boys. It is so hard to get anyone to help when going into their stores. The only reason I go here ever,is that I live nearby. Today I walked up to the parts counter and had to interrupt the only employee while he surfed the net for breakfast items. This was about 10:00 on a Sunday and very few customers were in the store. I explained what I needed. It was clear that he did not want to help me and looked at his Breakfast menu on the monitor. I explained that I have a commercial account at two other locations. He said I could re-apply for an account at their location on Monday. I explained that their commercial manger has helped me out before. He said he was not there and I would have to come back in on Monday. Thanks for helping, sorry I even tried to do business with you. I left the other item I had in my hand on the counter. Waited over 3 hours to get tires put on, and in the middle of it all, they tried to scam me. I ordered new tires online, which it said were in stock, and made an appointment a week in advance. When I went to cash out, the total was almost $500 more than the online order stated. They put on different, more expensive tires than what I ordered, tried to explain that my order doesn't show up in the system (so they didn't know I wanted the tires I actually ordered), and eventually offered to put on the right tires. Cut to another 30 min later, they couldn't find a complete set of the tires I ordered a full week earlier. What a surprise!! Eventually gave me a significant discount, but it still ended up net $100+ more than I was originally quoted. I have every reason to believe this is not the first time they've done this to a customer, and it won't be the last. read more

I thought the point of making appointments was so when you arrived you would be taken within a few minutes and your car put on the rack within a few minutes of that for the oil change you scheduled the time for. It appears all the appointment does is get you a spot for the day. After being told that it would be within 2 hours, at 2 hours and 20 of dropping the car off, I called to inquire and was told it should be within 20 more minutes and to wait on the call. Absolutely ridiculous way to do business, last time I will be going there to waste my time and day. read more

I am adding on to my first review. If I could give them ZERO stars, I would. I took my car back there to have the struts they installed looked at. They informed me that the struts where fine and that I needed new springs. They were going to charge me $500 for new springs. I told them to put my tires on and give my car back. I then called around for quotes. I called Marvin's on Belmont since it was close to my home and they gave me a very low quote. After Marvin's checked out my car they told me my struts were (clearly) blown, several parts needed maintenance since they were rusted or worn, and that my springs were fine. Marvin's quoted me $525 for new struts, springs, and extra maintenance. That was a price quote that was much lower than everyone else and more work was being done. After placing a call into their customer complaint center I received a voicemail from the shop manager explaining what the issue was. His voicemail only made him and his shop look that much more aweful. The reasoning he gave me for my issues had nothing to do with my original complaint, further proving my point that they don't listen. Here's my first and last experience with Pep Boys. I set up an appointment 6 days early over the phone. Late the night before my 10am appointment I get a call that they are backed up and can't get my car started at 10am but that they could get to it in 2-3 hours time. I have 4 tires that I need installed waiting at their location. I made the appointment for a reason, so I could get it in when it was scheduled, wait for them to install the 4 tires and then leave. Now they are telling me that I could be waiting 2-3 hours plus the install time and they did not realize that until late the night before. What good is the appointment if they overbook? It's like a Seinfeld episode. They know how to make the appointment but they don't know how to keep the appointment. I called the store and the poor guy who answered was nice but basically told me corporate is screwed up, they overbook constantly via their online system and he can't even get me an appointment now until Saturday and that would be the same situation. No promise of getting me in at the appointment time. He told me this has been going on for some time. Call their helpline. No help. Spent 10 min getting through their prompts and on hold only to be told their computer appointment system is screwed up and they are working on it. They have no remedy or solution and basically, I'm SOL. This is how a big corporation works?! Terrible, terrible, terrible experience, customer service and one screwed up company. Manny, Mo, and Jack are their advertising guys but they only got Mo right. It should be Mo, Larry & Curley. I'm getting my tires, loading them into my car and going to a real tire store to have them installed where they keep a reasonable appointment schedule. I would give them a minus rating if possible. Very unreliable! Took 2 hours to check the status of the car break. Then I got the page that the car is ready. When I got out, my car is still in the service area with no tires! The manager on duty can't find the staff who is working on my car. Waited another 30 minutes. This place is a hot mess! Everybody needs to go back to basic training on customer service. This place never heard of under promise and over deliver strategy. I will not come back to this place again. I should have been warned with the 2 stars rating here at Yelp and never brought my car here in the first place. Don't know how this place stays afloat with poor customer service. read more

I brought my car in for a quick oil change. They told me that since I didn't have an appointment it would take longer. Saturday and Sunday are so busy they said. I took a walk to honedepot and it turned out they were done in 40 minutes ratjer than 1.5 hrs. Someone dind't show up for their appointment. I had bought some floor mats and" Little Tony " a tech offered to help install them. He helped without having to. This place is neat. It's an autoshop Open on Sundays. Thanks to the tech that go work when everyone is off. read more
