Came to Pep Boys because i thought I would save time and money at the dealership. I was wrong, this location was terrible with communication. I had to be the one to call and check the status of my vehicle. Not one rep reached out to me, not even when my car was ready for pickup. Emailed the manger of the store to let him know of my experience and he never even had the decency to respond to my email. I ended up taking my car to the dealership to clean up Pep Boys mess. My recommendation - go anywhere else. I went here (the location on Elston), for the first time today. I was getting an oil change service. I had an appointment. It was estimated to take an hour and a half. I figured if it was a good place I have them look at my horn since it has stopped working twice in 2 years. An hour and half passed and no word, I went and asked about my car and they went and found out it hadn't even been started but it was next up. After another hour went by and I was getting kind of upset, I went to look and didn't see my car up there. The rep then came to tell me the technician was on break and I could come back tomorrow. After two and half hours of waiting is when they told me this, who in their right mind would come back. I also work all weekend. So not only did I leave their in tears, without any service done to my car, I wasted 2.5 hours and then drove 30 mins home unable to do my other errands since the places closed. The customer service was awful the fact that it took 2.5 hours and still nothing was done and I was offered to wait an unestimatable amount of time. And now I have to go get an oil change somewhere else obviously. Disappointed is an understatement. read more

Scheduled an appointment online to get my tires replaced, what a nice convenience. Got an email before hand saying that they were busy that day because of the weather, hey! An email notification, well at least I know there will be a small wait. I show up before my appointment and told the wait to get the car in is an hour. Okay...that's annoying....not sure why there's an appointment system if it slips that far behind but whatever, I was going to go to target anyways. I go to target to while away the hour and then come back. The same person at the counter notices me walk back in and says "Hey man, I tried calling you eight times. What did you think was wrong with the car?" Well color me confused. I look at my phone, still no calls from pep boys. I tell him that there isn't anything wrong with my car and I just want the new tires put on. He looks confused, he asks me WHAT MY CAR IS after they've already brought it into the garage and looked at it I now realize that HE CHECKED IN THE WRONG FUCKING PERSON and its taken him OVER AN HOUR, LOOKING AT THE WRONG CAR, and CALLING THE WRONG PERSON EIGHT TIMES ---- all without realizing it. Terrible- every single time. Last 3 times I've gone in for an oil change it's taken 2 hours or more. It isn't until I ask about the timing that my car is even brought into the garage to be looked at. The guy checking out acted as if I was being rude for asking an estimate finish time. They always tell me I need new tires and additional services which other mechanics said were definitely not needed. Never going back to this location, or Pep Boys in general. This place is by far the worst place for service. I say five hours waiting for them to put new tires on and a fuel pump. I was informed that they would get someone to do it ASAP. They hadn't even looked at my vehicle once in the five hours I sat there. The only way they knew I needed tires, and fuel pump is because I did diagnostics at another faculty prior. Then I began to complain to have someone finally look at my car, only for them to say drop it off tomorrow. They kept my for two days and didn't even change the fuel pump. Not to mention they left multiple pieces hanging, and dragging from my car. They still didn't fix my fuel problem, and just referred me to another repair facility. Then I had other issues occur that they were suppose already had fix, now I'm still waiting for them to get parts for issues that were paid for already by my warranty. They don't answer the phone, and no employee can explain anything. The entire staff is Lazy from the store Manager Charles, all the way down. No one calls you back ever, or they leave you on hold for 30+mins. I would love to see this store closed. read more

Honestly, I should be reviewing myself for 1 star - I was dumb enough to take my car here for years as it was close to my house and I was lazy/stupid. I'm embarrassed to admit how much of my money they've suckered me out of over the years, but it was enough that I just go and burn my money at a car dealership now instead. Wrong parts, bad estimates, non-honored warranties, "help" nearly as rude as you receive at the post office...you name it, they've done it to me and I actually went back. They couldn't even get windshield wipers right, I'm not kidding, but I believed them when they told me I had a late model car and it was normal for them to break after 2 weeks of use. Urgh. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I'll just say it - shame on me, about 25x over. I'd rather get rid of my car and ride a skateboard than come back here. Or eat at McDonald's every day for the next 6 months. In fact, I'd rather spend a year of weekends straight having to drink at Cans and NOT be allowed to make fun of anyone than come here again. Good God, do not trust these people with your car, it literally almost cost us our LIFE. Borrowed my in-laws van for a road trip and took it here beforehand to fix the brakes. $400 later, we were on the road. Little did we know that whoever worked on our car pulled our brake line AROUND the axle. So, as we were driving, the brake line was being slowly worn away. 300 miles later, we arrived at our exit and the BRAKES WENT OUT!!! That exit is always a really tight turn, when your car HAS brakes. It was fucking SCARY. Luckily, there was no one in front of us and we avoided crashing and dying by mere inches. The car had to be towed to another mechanic who was both appalled by the dangerous mistake Pep Boys made and amazed that we were unscathed. Another $400 to fix the car AGAIN (plus, we missed a week of work because we were stuck out of town waiting for parts.) Pep Boys actually tried to talk their way out of refunding us the full $800+! Oh, if only there was an option to award 0 stars. Let me take you through the nightmare that was having a simple tire rotation done: Before taking a weekend trip with my girlfriend Julia, we took the car in to this Pep Boys to have it looked at for any potential flaws that could hinder our mini road trip. One of the mechanics there suggested that we have the tires rotated. Simple enough, we said, "sure." The very next day (once on the road, headed out of town) we noticed that the car was making funny noises that appeared to be coming from the back passenger side. We didn't think much of it as there wasn't really anything we could do that that time. Once back home, we discovered the source of the noise: Our rear passenger-side tire only had 2 of the 4 lug nuts it should have. There are only two explanations for this: 1.) When rotating the tires, they forgot two of the lug nuts. 2.) When rotating the tires, 2 of the lug nuts were left so loose that they fell off upon driving. Either way, the fact remains: we were unknowingly driving a very dangerous vehicle, due to the negligence of Pep Boys. But wait, this is where it gets really bad: After we noticed this, Julia took the car over to the shop to ask if they could put two more lug nuts on that back wheel. She explained that we noticed this right after having a tire rotation done at the shop. We weren't berating them for leaving our car in such a dangerous condition, just that they fix their mistake. Well, according to the manager on duty, they had no record that we ever had work done at all. They said that without a printed copy of their receipt, they wouldn't acknowledge that we were ever there. Julia offered to bring in a copy of the credit card statement or the Pep Boys reward card we used when checking out, but they said that wasn't legitimate proof. She showed them inbound calls she received from their store on the date we had the car serviced. They said that wasn't legitimate proof. All in all, they called her a liar, and told her that they would put the lug nuts on the car for $85. This is extortion, plain and simple. For a business of any sort to treat their customers this way is unfathomable. Calling your customers a liar, putting them in life-threatening situations, and then trying to charge them additional money because they neglected to document that a visit ever occurred?! I will NEVER take a vehicle to this, or any other Pep Boys locations. read more

I had to get an auto part and decided to call on the phone as I drove here. The guy was very helpful. He informed me that he only had one left in stock and wanted to know if he should hold it for me. I said yes and gave him my name. He also told me how much the part would cost too...a great way to get over the sticker shock when I walked in. I arrived at the location, walked in and went to parts and there was my part sitting right on the counter. I asked the guy and he said here you go. Wow this process was so fast and easy. Then while I was checking out, I joined the Pep Boys Club...the more I spend the more rewards I get. The major perk was that they will rotate my tires for free even if I do not get my tires there. DO NOT take your car here unless it's just an oil change. And probably not even then. I'd taken my car here twice for oil changes before, and they were always relatively quick and reasonable and I liked the fact that I could make an appointment online. So when my brakes were acting funny, my boyfriend and I thought it would be good to get them to check it out before we drove 8 hours (the next day) on a road trip. So my boyfriend took it in on a Tuesday morning, where he stayed for four hours with little to no communication. After four hours, they told him they had to replace the brakes ($400) and the master cylinder (also $400), so they would order the part and it would be ready the next day around noon. The next day (when we had hoped to leave around 6 am), we didn't hear from them, so my boyfriend decided to go to the store at about 2 pm. At 3, they took the car back (good sign, right? and already 3 hours past their quoted time), but at 5:30, we still had no news. At 7, a full 5 hours after getting there, my boyfriend said they hadn't given him any update, and his phone died. At 9:45 PM, he finally came home with no car and no hope. At 9:30 PM, they had finally informed him that the part they ordered was defective, and we wouldn't get a replacement until Friday (because of Thankgiving) So tl;dr my boyfriend spent SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS in their waiting room with NO COMMUNICATION. We then had to rent a car ($400) for the weekend, to which the guy managing our car said "oh sorry." Despite promising to call on Friday, we hadn't heard from them by Saturday night, so we called. "Oh the Mazda? That was fixed Wednesday," said the project manager. NOPE. No one had bothered to write anything down, so the internal communication was completely nonexistent. He then told us everything would be good Sunday and he'd give us a call. No call. We called on the way home, and we were told it was fixed, so we stopped by the store. SURPRISE-- it was not fixed. The guy took us through everything like they'd made great progress, but literally nothing was better. Long story less long, it took them TWO WEEKS and FOUR REPLACEMENT PARTS to give us our car back. In that time, they called when they promised exactly zero times. I realize that sometimes parts are faulty, but at least let us know. Anyway, they didn't charge us for the master cylinder, but I will never ever ever ever ever go back here again. read more

I was aware of Pep Boys being awful and expensive but cheap for Oil changes. I was leaving for a month long road trip and thought it would be a good idea, So i brought my car in for an oil change thinking they couldn't mess that up. Guess i was wrong. They haphazardly crack the plug off my oil pan to cause a leak. The incompetent mechanic told me that they couldn't put a temporary plug in and that i had to basically drop $500 to fix my car right now. How did a $20 oil change turn into a $500 cost so quickly? Finally one of the slightly more competent mechanics realized that they COULD put a temporary plug in, but stated that it wouldn't last more than a couple days. I spend the first 3 days of my road trip in fear of leaking oil on the highway. When i finally reached my day off in Toronto, I took my car to a autoshop. Not only did the mechanic say that the temporary plug would hold, but that i didn't need an oil pan replacement. Guess what? THE PLUG HELD THE ENTIRE TRIP. Thank you Pep Boys for being money-grubbing liars who try to scam everyone out of more money because no one trusts your work, and this is why. NEVER take your car here. NEVER. read more

I went there for 4 wheel alignment in 2005, because the wheel was off center. I drove in and left the car there and picked it up in the afternoon. On my way home, I didn't notice any change in the handling, the wheel was still off center. After some online research, I learned that shops should provide before and after alignment data, which I didn't receive any. So, I went back the next day. It turned out that they NEVER TOUCHED MY CAR, but they charged me money and wasted my time. Stay away for the this terrible place. read more

This place is an absolute joke and management here is more incompetent than teenagers working at McDonalds. The wait to drop my car off was similar to standing in line for a new ride at Great America. However, they didn't even provide the 45 seconds of enjoyment. To make a long story short, these morons took my car in and completely mis-diagnosed it. I paid for a diagnostic check and they missed 8 different issues. Since I trusted them as they have been very good with our other car, I went ahead with the work they recommended. Now I am out over $3,000 and I'm staring at over $5,000 more! Their direct quote was that once I fix the items, the car will be good as new. Well, it is not even drivable. To top it all off, I subsequently brought the car to the dealer-ship as well as a family friend and was informed they didn't even replace the rotors or discs that I was charged for! I hesitate to post a review of an experience I had five years ago, but based on these reviews, nothing much has changed. Long story short, I tried out this Pep Boys when I moved to Chicago, when I was in a position of caressing as much life out of an old car as possible - without going broke - before investing in a new one. They did some kind of bumper-to-bumper inspection and told me I'd be crazy not to immediately invest $1,500 in the thing. I did not. I took it to a friend's father's mechanic, who told me I needed new brake pads and replaced them for a reasonable price. I then discovered the Midas on North and Clybourn. With the help of the kindly mechanics there, my old Geo Prizm and I had two more good years together before we parted ways, during which time I didn't spend anywhere near that $1,500 estimate. I'm going to be as brief as possible. I used the Lyft express hertz vehicle for 15 months and I was a very bad decision. One reason is because Hertz Elston location lied to my face by promising I can return vehicle with zero gas return limit and to look for a credit on my account for days non use ( 12/31-01/02 ). People who drive for any share rides no the values of those days. Today I return the car and my balance owed is ridiculous. I have called over 20 times and left several voice messages with the at this location manager Shavon Lacey (she was the 2nd person that made the promise ). The humiliation I experienced when I was told to contact Lyft bc Hertz done their part. Someone need to be held accountable as I spent over $27,000 renting from Hertz last year! read more

The retail store here is great, but save yourself the headache and skip this location for any service beyond an oil change. They tried to rotate my tires and broke off a lug nut by using a high-powered impact wrench. This set of lug nuts was of high quality and was only 3 months old, so it was not a rust issue. Once they broke half the lug nut, they took an air chisel to it and damaged the rim, which was also 3 months old. I had to take it to two wheel specialists to have them blast off the lug and replace the stud. Thankfully, pep boys was at least willing to pay for the cost of the ruined wheel and labor to blast it off. I ended up paying for just the new set of lugs out of my pocket and dealing with the very large headache. An important note - Pep Boys, as a brand, is a great one. I've had lots of success with the location in Forest Park and will continue to go there. The techs in Skokie are also great. read more

Oil in the oilpan. That's what I was told the problem was after bringing it in for an oil change. They stripped the bolt and told me since they did that and they found oil in the oilpan it would have to be replaced for $700. I asked if there was also gas in the gastank because that's a big problem. Tried to fix it in the lot but I was told they would call the police. Towed it away and got that done elsewhere. Total crooks and if I even need parts, oil, or anything for my car or motorcycle, I travel past pep boys and go somewhere else. read more

They haven't even looked at my car and I'm already livid. I had AAA tow my car there yesterday and I called them this morning to check on the status of my car. Well, there was no record of my car being dropped off. Um what?? I was on hold for 30 minutes while they checked their computer over and over, I had AAA call them to check on it, and I have confirmation that the tow truck did indeed drop it off. I was told to go there to look in the parking lot for my car. My car is broken, I have no good way to get there! I finally called back and asked to speak to the manager. I had to ask him to walk outside and physically look for my car because they were too incompetent to walk out and look themselves. Well, the car is there just hanging out in the parking lot. They are expediting my service, which from the looks of these reviews, will be shiteous and overpriced, and probably need to be redone in a few months. Dammit. read more

They said they had unexpectedly gotten more jobs, but when I got there they never informed me about prolonged wait times. I'm showing Pep Boys some love! I didn't have my car serviced here, but this is the a review for the store. The rubber off of my windshield wiper had frozen off during the recent snowstorm (I yanked on it when it was still frozen to my car. Oops.) The forecast called for rain, so I desperately needed new windshield blades. I had a really bad experience at Autozone, so I decided to stop at this Pep Boys on the way home (already raining, I barely made it there!). The service was efficient, and when I went to check out, I asked if they did installation and for how much. They first said it was $5, but then offered to put them on for free! I know I would have have the hardest time messing with them in the rain and dark. So I tipped the guy a few bucks, and I was on my way, with a windshield I could see out of!!! I'm a happy customer, and I'll be back to Pep Boys for all of my car parts from now on! read more

I'm going to have to echo in here with all the horrible reviews. My husband needed to take his work van in for an oil change and new brake pads before going on a long trip. He decided to take it to Pepboys because it was one of the places his company fleet management card would allow him to go, and he could get both of those things done at once. When we got there, we were told it would be about an hour wait. We walked over to Target next door to kill some time. Came back and were told to wait some more. Went to the shopping center across the street and killed more time, and came back to find his van still wasn't done because they had a hard time finding the parts, or some lame excuse like that. It was closing time before they were done with his van- altogether, four hours! We were the very last ones sitting in the waiting room and the lights had even been turned off, and then the staff remembered we were there and turned them back on. If you want to throw money away and stand around a bunch of leering ghetto fab attitude mechanics who couldn't get it right after 6 frigging times in a smelly waiting room go there. I took my car in for the alternator, about 4 months later the alternator died again, so I want in for the warranty. Then it actually became ridiculous, I had to go back 4 more times and they not only couldn't seem to fix it, but kept breaking other things too. They broke the fuse box cover, they lost the oil cap which gave me a heart attack on the highway and many more little dents and scratches. The customer service is absolutely pathetic. The place is accessible (after you get away from the fullerton/elston intersection from hell) and they have what you need for your vehicle. My only issue is that "mechanics" must troll the parking lot for suckers since I have been asked on two occasions if I needed auto help. The first time: "I notice a little crack in your front bumper. I can fix it for you for $100." The second time (while I was replacing my windshield wipers): "Hey, do you need help installing those?" I needed my side view mirror replaced and know nothing of cars or where to go so I naturally called pep boys..... The guy on the phone was super nice, told me they would order it, then call me when it came in. They never called. I called a couple days and my mirror had just been chillin there for days, so I went in, they tried to put it together, and ordered the wrong one. Great. They ordered a new one, said they would call me, THEY NEVER CALLED. and neither did I. Job: 1 Motor mount replacement ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TL-DR: NEG: Attempted $16 up-charge for part they had in-store ($63.99 advertised vs quoted price $79.99); Overall poor customer service; Previously unquoted shop fee; High base labor rate (compared to other local & more reputable garages) PRO: Technician Fernando provided excellent customer service & was very knowledgeable. He took extra time to explain the problems with my car & was nothing but professional--even when it was clear Pep Boys would not be servicing my car. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ THURSDAY NIGHT: I left my car late in the evening. I was told it was first in line for the next morning and that a mechanic would call with his assessment so I could give the OK. FRIDAY AFTERNOON: No one called by early afternoon. I called & spoke to Oscar, who put me on hold. After 10 minutes I began think he'd forgotten about me so I hung up & called back. Oscar answered & quoted me $295 to replace the motor mount. Breakdown: $79.99 for the part (#2933) $215 labor. (FYI: Their hourly rate is $109.) I understand labor costs vary, but I wanted to make sure the quote was reasonable so I called two other area garages and was quoted $207 (Ashland Tire and Auto) and $225 (Marvins Auto) for everything. Both places quoted me $60 for the part, so I went to Pepboys.com, selected the Elston store, typed in the part number & sure enough...Price: $63.99. I called Pep Boys back and spoke with Chris this time. When I asked him about the price difference, he had no explanation but offered to adjust it to reflect the store's retail price. At some point he mentioned there would be an additional $23 shop fee. When I said this was the first I'd heard of it, he waived it--but did not explain what it was for. I asked if Pep Boys typically waived the diagnostic fee ($20) if a potential customer had their vehicle serviced with them and he said no. After I told him I had other (less costly) options, he offered to waive that fee as well. Once we locked down a price ($286 with tax), I gave the go-ahead. SATURDAY AFTERNOON: Midday and I still hadn't heard that my car was ready. Oscar answered and explained that they could not do the repair after all. Apparently I needed an additional part (a bracket) & the repair could not be handled by the shop. He was vague but I managed to glean that the internal treads where the mount is screwed in had been stripped so I had to go elsewhere. I asked for a recommendation, but he did not have one. I suspect Pep Boys realized the job would take longer than what they had originally estimated & no longer wanted to take on the job at that price (per their policy, Pep Boys won't charge you more than the quoted labor cost even if the job takes longer, but they also won't reimburse the difference if the work takes less time). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I spoke with a manager and the technician who looked at my car (Fernando). I voiced my concern about the part price & asked if they had caused the stripping damage (in a failed attempt to replace the mount). Fernando explained that once he realized that the bracket was cracked & that the screws appeared to be in bad shape, he didn't perform any work on it. He even raised the engine to show me the cracked bracket & screws, which I appreciated. Technically, there was nothing in the job that Pep Boys could not fix, but at this point, I was happy to take my car elsewhere The write up for my car included a $20 diagnostic fee, but the manager waived it without me having to ask. read more

There are so many negative things that people write on Yelp, I thought I'd be the exception. I just left Pepboys a couple hours ago, where I needed my tire fixed (there was a nail in it), before I drive a long distance tomorrow. When I walked in, they told me they couldn't fix it tonight because they were already going to be there way after close (it was 30 mins until close). Knowing that feeling when people do that to me at work, I politely said 'Okay that's fine, I totally understand! Thanks anyways.. I'll come back at a different time.' After I said this, I was ready to leave. This is when one of the mechanics stopped me and asked what I needed done, and then proceeded to ask me for my keys - he was willing to do it for me, on top of his full load for the night. I was caught off guard and so unbelievably appreciative, that I decided I was going to tip him when he was done. Once he was done and I tried to give him money, he wouldn't accept it.. I then went in to pay and the lady walked out from the back and told me that I was 'all set.' On top of helping me late, my services were taken care of. $20 might not be a lot to some, but being a college student, it's a lot for me. When I walked in there tonight, I had no idea I'd be writing this right now. Proof that good people do exist, but even more proof that simply treating people with respect (even when things don't seem to be going your way) is recognized and appreciated. read more

I would rather not eat for a week than go here again. I would rather get kicked in the stones by the Noid every morning when I get up to take a leak than ever go to this place again. The story is that my van was having trouble starting, so I took it over there to have them test the battery. They said that it would cost me $20 for them to check the alternater, starter, and battery. About an hour later the dude tells me it is definately the battery and showed me the paper where the mechanic wrote down the resting volts (remember this for later). So I said go ahead and replace the battery. A hundred bucks and 2 hours later I am set to leave. I get home to check to reference ranges for the volts on a battery, and my battery was actually in the normal range! That SOB lied to me. So I get up to start my van the next morning and guess what? Wow can it get any worse .Bad customer service, way too crowded , kept my car over the weekend and did not fix it .I would not recommend iot to ladies that have no idea how a vehicle works. I scheduled an appointment online, which seemed to have no bearing on the amount of time it took to look at my car--as I heard him also quote and hour and a half time for an oil change (?!?) to someone on the phone--which yes, the man answered while I was standing there without acknowledging to me he was being rude. I chose to take my car into a shop because there was also a strange rattling noise it was making. So, after an hour and a half I was informed a) the rattling noise was something they can't fix since they don't weld anything there b) they did not rotate my tires as my front tires are old c) they want to sell me tires instead of doing what I brought my car in there for. $42 and and hour and a half later I was out of there with just a basic oil change. Also, upon checking my receipt I was charged $10.60 for a tire rotation..which they told me they did not do. I won't be back here. read more

I didn't have the shiteous experience here that so many other people did, but the stories of long term issues, and bad reviews from trusted Yelp friends makes me a little wary of possible future issues. I came here after a failure at home auto repair. I really should have just listened to my dad instead of trying to fix my own car, considering I'm not even allowed to use the lawnmower. Actually, I had to finally bring it in b/c of time constraints. Tow was cheaper than I thought, and they were able to fix the problem, albeit a relatively small one, in one day. The only issue is that they needed to get a different part instead of one I brought in, and they broke a promise to quote me a price before fixing it. I hate liars. I think most people do. They did remedy this irritating gaffe by price matching on the part which saved me $35. I'll have to update if anything bad happens as a result of this repair. read more
