Everybody working there seamed cool. However, their website has a 30 minute oil change guarantee with appointment. Mine took 2.5 hours and had to check in with the service desk a couple times to make sure they didn't forget about me (which at some point the might have). Filled out their emailed survey unfavorably and got a response from somebody name David apologizing for the wait and offering to personally service the vehicle if need be to speed up the wait time for my next service. I responded with the following email but got no response: As much as I appreciate the offer to personally service my vehicle to help speed things up next time, even if it is frivolous, it means you would have to change my oil in the parking lot since they said the problem was they didn't have an open bay. Don't get me wrong I understand that an oil change isn't going to be the most important thing your mechanics have to work on, but in 2.5 hours I could have changed the oil myself and still had at least an hour and a half think of creative ways to dispense of the used oil. I guess I don't quite understand the purpose of your 30 minute guarantee. I didn't read much into it beforehand because even if it took an hour I would have been cool with that. But from what I can tell your motto is pretty much "30 minute oil change guarantee with appointment or else David will personal service your vehicle should you decide to come back." read more

Yesterday, I could not find a place to replace our corroded battery. I went to Pep Boys on Elston and spoke with Devin. Devin's friendly, helpful service was professional on a level that far exceeds what you would expect in replacing a car battery. Devin told me it would be about 45 minutes and that was what it took. I took a stroll through Home Depot, picked up a couple of items, cruised Mice Center to look at what a second monitor would cost, and picked up lunch at Panera. Imagine that the day before your to leave for your sister's wedding (which you are standing in) you discover your car has a flat tire. You swap the flat for your donut and carefully make your way to your local Pep Boys to see if they can patch or replace it in time for you to make it to the rehearsal the next day. Upon arriving, the mechanic at the service desk informs you that the tire can't be patched due to sidewall damage, and that they have to replace the tire. You reluctantly agree given the time constraints and not wanting to provoke bridezilla. You explain to the mechanic the situation, to which he replies "I can't guarantee you when it will be done, we'll call you." You look at your watch, it's 8pm, and you know your odds of finding another place this late at night are near impossible. You stress the importance that the tire is fixed so you can leave for your sister's wedding, and you head back home to finish packing for the trip. Fast forward to Friday morning, it's 11am, you wrap up a conference call with work and still have yet to receive a call from Pep Boys. You make your way to the store, and upon walking in, discover your tire, untouched, exactly where you left it the night prior. By now it's noon, the rehearsal is in less than 6 hours and it'll take you at least 4 to get there (and you'll lose an hour due to crossing time zones). You take back your tire and promptly leave Pep Boys, then spend the next hour visiting 4 other shops looking for a replacement before finding someone who's curious enough to look at the flat & ends up patching it instead of replacing it. That was my experience last week with this local Pep Boys store. Not only did the mechanic make an poor diagnosis which would have resulted in me paying more than I should have, he was too lazy to see that the work was completed before I returned. I had been a loyal customer with Pep Boys for the last year, letting them handle the maintenance on my car. I was planning on having my brakes serviced there shortly, but after this fiasco, I will never be a customer of theirs again. It's a shame too, because I'm now in the market for 4 new tires as well. The store is very busy the delay time usually ranges from 10 to 30 minutes mainly to the people who walk in without an appointment in this place usually busy because of the good service. What I like about the store is that people are very knowledgeable and if you don't feel comfortable with the person that you are talking to you can always ask for somebody else mechanic wise ask for Antonio. read more

Took my 2014 Sonata in for front brakes in July. They said it needed rotors as well. I was ok with that since it was original equipment. Brakes were good for a couple days, with a little grinding as they settled in...so I thought. The left side grinded for a few days and stopped. Then the right side started. Horrible grinding! Car pulling every time you brake. Took the car back since it was under warranty for 40k. They claimed to have taken them off, cleaned everything and back together. No grinding at first, then back to the grind at every stop. It was awful!! Returned for the third time and was told some screws needed to he lubrication. Again, ok for a few days. It's STILL grinding on the right side! I give up!!! IDK WTF they did, but don't take your car here for ANYTHING!!! read more

I had a great experience here all things considered. The only reason I'm deducting one star is they didn't have the tires in stock they were supposed to install when I arrived for my 'appointment' and they didn't call as promised when they were in. But I called them, found they were in and drove back for installation. The guy who waited on me seemed clueless - but super likable with a calming energy. I know that sounds kooky, but it's just what I need when dealing with car issues . Also, they got it done at the 'appointed' time in 1 1/2 hour as promised and I got a great deal on 4 Pirelli tires. Arrived before my scheduled appoint and was told my wait from start to finish would be an hour for an oil change! . 2 hours later they were still working on it... they kept coming out and asking if we knew about the car and how to verify if the oil level was correct? Is there any time I feel more vulnerable, more ignorant or out of control of my universe than when something goes wrong with my car's engine? Right now, I can't think of any. This is really the story of two auto shops in Bucktown. Midas on Fullerton and Pep Boys on Elston. On Friday I headed off to work and my car started behaving badly. Drat. So Saturday morning I took it over to Midas who called and told me that I needed a new $1700 thingy...at the end of the day they also said it was idling rough and probably needed a tune up and some other stuff. Still in sticker shock, I paid for the original repair promising to think about the other and look at my budget (as if I really had the cash either way). By Sunday I was convinced so I shopped around for the tune up and Pep Boys was $100 cheaper. Turns out, it was cheaper because they forgot to include one of the parts I told them it needed. THEN, before they even started the tune up I got a call from the service manager. He said the mechanic didn't feel the tune up would solve the problem and thought the should run a diagnostic ($$) and if it came back that it needed a tune up, they'd do that if it was something else they'd do that. Made sense. Sort of. Next phone call...you need a tune up AND your fuel injectors cleaned. The super nice service manager offered not to charge me for the diagnostic check and take 10% off the total. I was pumped since my two day total was now at $2500. Before I even got home it was apparent that the car was running even rougher than before so I called and told them I'd be back. Today the on-duty service manager told me that, according to the mechanic that worked on my car, no diagnostic had been done. (so much for the free service) They did the tune-up and the injectors and that was all. And they didn't believe anything they did or didn't do could be the problem--this was all decided without even turning the key. Go back to Midas! They messed up, not us! At this point, I'm a little steamed and trying to voice my frustration on the lack of communication (or was it lies?) but back to Midas I went. At Midas, the shop manager saw me come in and recognized me from Saturday. He was on his way out but turned around to find out why I'd come back (I probably had some residule steam coming out of my ears as a warning). I explained my little saga and tried to be clear that I wasn't assigning blame, just needed someone to actually drive the car, see what it was doing and fix it. The mechanic thought I was blaming him and was a little high strung about it...I just want my car to run!!! 15 minutes later the shop manager came to tell me that Pep Boys didn't get a wire completely plugged in...something that if they had bothered to look at they could have found and fixed. I bought an old Jeep and if anyone knows anything about old Jeeps, then you know that if you maintain them they will run forever. I have been a pretty regular customer at Pep Boys since my investment in an old Jeep and everytime I go in I have gotten nothing but awesome service with competitive pricing. Two weeks ago I had to bring my car in for a serious check up. Chris at the front desk helped me and I could not have been taken care of in a nicer way. He was attentive, informative and didn't mind me calling him every four hours for a checkup. When I came to pick up my Jeep that evening I was assisted by a very sweet and personable young man named Sam (I am hoping that is his name). My car was fixed and I didn't totally break the bank. I love Pep Boys and will continue to bring my old Jeep here time and time again. read more

We had a scheduled tire appointment for 1:00pm on Sunday. We checkin at 1 at the front desk and we were told by the gentleman that it will be at least a 2 hour wait. He said they overbooked the appointments. We asked to come in another day and he said Tuesday would be a good day to come in. We scheduled the appointment for 4:30pm on Tuesday, we drive over there again and they tell us the computers are down and that we will have to reschedule. We wasted our time twice driving over there which is really frustrating. Overall, bad experience. read more

Truck stalled while visiting Chicago. The only place open on a Saturday eve is pep boys. Got it towed there. Didn't work on it until Monday. Told me it was a junction box? No such thing. It was actually the fuse box. Told me it needed replaced, and needs to be reprogrammed for $1200. They knew that I don't live there, so if I say no, i would have to get it towed to another place, and start over. After further research, the fuse box replacement is just a plug and play, don't need to be reprogrammed, and they overcharged me for the part. I've already filed a complaint with pep boys, and I won't stop until I get results. read more

First of all and for honesty, they did good job in replacing my old tires with new ones. I came without an appointment but the receptionist said I may leave my car for 4 hours to be ready. I agreed and later they texted me to inform me that the new tires were mounted and my car is ready. In the same day I picked up my car and left to my home. Now, my bad story started When I arrived home and got out of my car, I locked up the doors but the horn didn't honk or totes , even the panic alarm was not working by the remote key. In the next day, I came back and told them about this problem. They agreed to inspect the car ( later discovered that inspection not free and I refused to pay even a cent) and after 1 hour they said to fix the horn I have to pay for this. I thought that Pep boys will apologize for this problem which was caused my horn not to work and they are in away or other responsible about it. I decided to see the manager but I was shocked, he was so firm, I tried to explain for him that my car was in good condition when I left it here in their parking lot. He did not help to fix this problem and told me to take my car and go away or to pay for them and fixed my car. Unfortunately, I don't blame people who wrote bad reviews on this store. This place lacks for understanding management who can listen to the customers and help them, and unfortunately you don't feel that you are so welcomed like other excellent tire stores. Honestly, this make me so sad and disappointed for what happened to me. My experience with this store is so bad and I am not going to be here again. Ha! I had a horrible customer service experience, so I come to yelp and see their 1.5 star rating. I guess I'm not alone. Wake up management! I purchased antifreeze. It rung up for one dollar more than it was marked. I know it's only a dollar, and maybe it's a character flaw, but I can't pay more than what it's marked. So I point it out to the cashier, and she calls the manager over. At no point does he acknowledge me, while he sends the cashier to the opposite side of the store to make sure I'm not scamming pep boys for one dollar. So she comes back, and tells him that I am right. He never looks at me, changes the price in the register, and walks away. The cashier then rings me, gives me my receipt, and doesn't say a word to me. Was it an inconvenience that I only wanted to pay the price that was marked? You sure acted that way. Shame on you. I was with a group of friends on our way six flags and as soon as I walked over to the service desk I was acknowledge by OSCAR he said we will be with you in just a min! Woohoo he meant right away he put me in the system and in no time he had the car in the shop. Honestly only came here because I was tired of having oil dripped in my parking spot after having an oil change at Jiffy Lube on North Ave. Well bad decision on my part. I made an online reservation for an oil change for 1pm and it was 2pm before my car was ready. I asked what was taking so long and they told me that my oil filter was stuck lol. I was watching the whole thing go down and one of the manager finally walked up and turned the wheel while my car was up on the lift and the oil filter dropped to the ground. First time at this location! 07/12/2016 8am I arrived and Joe Horvath got me all set up for my summer prep appointment. The service was excellent. Joe took me around my 2010 Nissan Versa and pointed out 2 tires needed to be replaced and made a few other suggestions. I didn't feel pressured at all, he allowed me to gain more knowledge about how my vehicle can be in the best shape and also assisted with setting up a return appointment later in the week. The time of service was done in an hour as well, which was awesome! 07/14/2016 Another bright and early 8am appointment this time Alan picked up right where Joe left off by continuing to provide Excellent service, I got two tires replaced and Alan was kind while explaining and answering any questions I had. The time on this was about 1hr 45 mins. I will be recommending this location to friends and family and returning as well! read more

These guys straight up lie. They aren't smart enough to be consistent in their stories though, so it is painfully obvious that they're lying. Scheduling and price quoting are routinely falsely stated. When challenged, they offer you thin explanations and attempt to distract you from their incompetence. I'm embarrassed that I've spent money there in the past. Don't patronize them because your service is likely to be as incompetently performed as their front of house operations. But unless you're under the good with them, how can you know? All you can do is rely on their front facing staff to indicate the likely quality of the repairs. read more

I usually don't do reviews, but the other days Andres went above and beyond in a way that compelled me to let everyone know how great the service there was. I'm a small business owner whose only delivery truck had its starter go out on a Friday night, the night before the busiest delivery day of the year for us. I didn't want to, but I had to walk in there 2 minutes before they closed and Andres still acted as if it were 2 minutes after they opened. He didn't huff or puff or complain even once and also gave me the best service that I've received from any auto parts store in the 25 years I've been working on cars. I've used the Elston Pep Boys for years and was always happy. The last two times (February and June 2021) were disasters. It started a few months ago when I took my truck in for new tires. I was told it also needed suspension work. OK, I authorized some but turned down some. Right after the truck came back, the news stories said there was a recall for the tire brand I purchased. But nobody at PB contacted me. And nobody would say even after I asked. Days later, the check engine light came on. I used a code reader and it said a bad evaporation system. Fast forward to June, The AC stopped working. That started my second PB encounter. I asked them to fix the AC and resolve the check engine light. After a week, I was told I needed more suspension work but couldn't get an answer about how much it would cost. So I declined and stuck with the AC and check engine light. Around day 12, I'd heard nothing and called. I was on hold for 20 minutes but only got a promise that someone would call back later that day. Didn't happen. Not a big deal ordinarily. But it had been 12 days without an explanation. The next day I was told the truck still wasn't ready. Pep Boys said that the replacement part for the AC broke and was on backorder. I asked for the truck back until the part came in so I could at least drive temporarily. They said no, the truck was "disassembled in a bay." What? It was just the AC and check engine light. After 18 days, the truck came back and cost $2,100 (with an unexplained alleged discount bringing it down from around $4,400). But fewer than 24 hours later, the check engine light came back on as if all PB did was use a code reader to clear the error message. A day later, the smell of gas was noticeable from outside the truck and it started requiring extra attempts to start. After approximately two weeks, I planned on bringing the truck back to see what was going on. But it suddenly lost the ability to shift. It's got automatic transmission that was stuck in neutral and the shifter was loose. After the truck was towed back, PB inspected and said it needs $2,100 more work to replace the fuel pump and the shift selector cable. It's just a coincidence that all these problems happened after they "disassembled" my truck. And if i want the check engine light fixed, it's going to cost more. Supposedly the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. Am I confident? Well, they didn't fix it last time. So it seems like it's just a guess. And I'm worried that something else will need fixing that isn't PB's fault. read more

Horrifying Accident and Funny Business at PepBoys I've read through most of the reviews on this site. My experience is probably the worst. If you're thinking of taking your car to the PepBoys store on Elston Avenue, I urge you to read my review first. Here's what happened. 1. In September of 2012, I had PepBoys work on my car's steering system. 2. About 10 days later, the driver's side front wheel detached from the steering system while I was exiting Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, causing an accident. If a wheel detaches from the steering system while you're driving, it's impossible to control the car. It was a horrifying experience and could easily have resulted in multiple fatalities. Miraculously, no one was hurt, but my car suffered substantial damage. 3. Immediately after the accident, the front wheels of my car were sharply pigeon-toed. This means at least one of the wheels was not attached to the steering system. When both wheels are attached to the steering system, they point in the same direction. 4. I had AAA tow my car back to PepBoys. Since PepBoys was closed, AAA left the car in the PepBoys lot. 5. When PepBoys reopened the next morning, I spoke with them by phone. I asked them to inspect the car and determine what caused the accident and what needed to be done to fix the car. I didn't authorize any repair work. 6. When PepBoys completed their 'inspection,' they told me both wheels were attached to the steering system and had been that way when the car arrived at their store. They said they couldn't explain what caused the accident. 7. I've asked mechanics repeatedly if the wheel could reattach to the steering system without human intervention. No one has an innocent explanation. The only plausible explanation is that PepBoys reattached the wheel in order to hide the cause of the accident. PepBoys must have thought the accident was caused by their negligent repair work 10 days before, and wanted to hide the evidence. The 'inspection' was done by the same mechanic, Paulie, who did the original repair work. 8. I've spent a lot of time trying to get PepBoys to assume responsibility for the accident, but so far with no success. 9. The PepBoys store manager, Chris, admits the wheel couldn't reattach itself, but claims the wheel was in fact attached when the car arrived at PepBoys after the accident. 10. The AAA tow truck driver saw the wheels were sharply pigeon-toed after the accident. So did a young woman who stopped to help me on the night of the accident. So did I. In other words, we all saw that the wheel was not attached to the steering system. 11. My insurer, Travelers, investigated the claim. They agree with me that someone at PepBoys must have performed work on the car in order to hide the cause of the accident. 12. I filed a claim with PepBoys. PepBoys denied my claim with no real investigation. They made no attempt to contact the AAA tow truck driver or the young woman who stopped to help me. Their claims staff contacted me only after denying my claim--and then only by an automated phone call. Instead, they relied on assurances from Chris, the store manager, that they'd done nothing wrong. 13. Looking back, PepBoys couldn't have behaved much worse. First they performed negligent repair work on my car, causing what easily could have been a multiple-fatality accident. Next they did unauthorized and undisclosed work on my car in order to conceal the cause of the accident and hide their negligence. Finally, they denied my claim without making any real effort to determine what happened. 14. My advice is to avoid the PepBoys store on Elston Avenue at all costs. read more

I wish I could give this place less than 1 star. I also wish I had read the reviews on here before ever stopping in. I brought my car in when I discovered a bubble in my tire. I was on my way to work and didn't have time to search out places online and came to this Pep Boys. Another tire had gone flat recently and I only temporarily fixed it with a fixaflat can, not to mention that I had also just come back from a road trip so I didn't want to risk a highway blow out. Pep boys was the closest place listed online and I figured a chain would have cheaper tires and better deals. I went in and was told it would be 2 hours. 2 and a half hours later it was still sitting in the lot. Then I was told it would be an additional hour plus another 90 min for the work. I was already late for work and didn't want to risk another long wait somewhere else so I stayed against my better judgement. I have to admit that 1 guy was really nice and apologetic but Chris, the manager who originally helped me, was not. He had been rude right from the beginning until the very end. He acted like he would give me a discount for the 4.5 hour wait but instead only gave me a rebate that I would have gotten anyway. Once I pointed out that that was not really any additional savings, he scrawled on a business card for a free oil change. Gee, thanks. Did I mention that I opted to replace all 4 tires and an alignment that was going to run me up to $500? I am not the type of person to complain for free goods and services. To be honest, I don't even enjoy writing negative reviews. But also having experience working in customer service, I know what is and is not acceptable customer service; something this Pep Boys obviously needs a lesson in. None of this would have warranted a bad review if it had been handled properly, but it wasn't. Immediately driving out of the lot, I realize that my horn is not working. A horn I use daily driving out of my alleyway that was working that very morning was not working following the tires and alignment. I came in for my free oil change and asked them to take a look and they wouldn't unless I paid for an electrical diagnostic. This doesn't surprise me as I've read a lot of reviews of people who have had 'mysterious' parts breaking after bringing their car in here. Or that their cars/tires were not put back together properly after maintenance. Even though they may not be related, the way they handled it was poor. They also tried to sell me on a bunch of other stuff, which I would normally be glad to do since I'm getting something free, but I absolutely refuse to pay any more money into this shoddy establishment. There is no reason to frequent a business that treats their customers this way, especially in the city where there are a ton mom n pop auto garages that appreciate your business. Listen to me and all the other people on here who were obviously treated the same way- do not go here. UPDATE: I decided to look online to see what the problem was and watched some tutorials on common problems. I checked the fuse, cleaned it out, checked out the wires and connection and bam! Horn is working again. Pep Boys wanted to charge me $80 for an electric diagnostic testing and god knows what they would have "claimed" to be the problem and charge me additional fees to fix it. Ok first let me start by saying DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLE HERE FOR ANY TYPE OF MAJOR SERVICE! The mechanics and customer service are just terrible. Now, my story will tell you why... I was having a rough running and electrical issue with my Jeep. I took it to Pep Boys after I was told by another shop that the issue was my fuel pump. I took it to Pep Boys because they quoted me a much cheaper price for the repair. I dropped my Jeep off Thursday evening and told them what the issue was, but also told them to double check because of the other symptoms I was having. I was told I would hear from them in the morning since I was supposed to take my Jeep out of town Friday eve. Friday morning rolls around and I don't get a call. I call them and am told that the mechanic who will be working on my Jeep doesn't event come in until 12pm, which I was not told when I dropped it off. 3pm rolls by and still no call. At this point I am starting to get worried as I am supposed to leave town at 5pm. I call again and my Jeep still hasn't been looked at! Finally a rep named 'Susan' calls me back at 8pm saying that they ran the tests and found that it wasn't my fuel pump but my cam position censor also needing new plugs, wires, cap and rotor and that they wouldn't event be able to work on it until Saturday morning not to mention she was condescending as hell! At this point my trip was shot, not to mention Susan's rude attitude toward me about calling multiple times during the day to get a status update. That's where the customer service went bad. BEWARE OF SUSAN! I was quoted just over $500 for the sensor and other electrical parts so I told Susan to just replace the sensor and that I would do the other parts myself since they are a parts store. She told me that they would work on my Jeep in the morning. Now its Saturday, day 3 of this ordeal and I never got a phone call before 12. Mind you the shop opens at 8. So I call again and IT STILL HASN'T BEEN WORKED ON! Finally I get a call around 7pm telling me the repair is complete and that I can pick it up, but since I was now at a wedding I decided to come pick it up on Sunday. I went to Pep Boys around 10:30 on Sunday, paid my bill, bought the other parts then swapped them out only to find out that it was running just as bad as when I brought it in! My fault for paying $220 for service and $50 for parts before I checked out my Jeep. So I go back inside and tell another rep that it's still running just as bad and he said that Susan would be back on Monday and would call me ASAP. Now we're in to Monday DAY 5! Again I hear nothing from Susan before noon, so I call and am put on hold over over 10 minutes. Finally she gets on the phone and I explain to her what was happening. She said that the mechanic would take another look at it but now for some reason there was another car that he was working on in front of mine so he wouldn't be able to look at it until Tuesday. I hear the same damn thing on Tuesday! Now he wouldn't be able to look at it until Wednesday! I'm sorry, is there only one mechanic at that whole store?! Don't worry I'm told, he'll look at it first thing in the morning. And no, he didn't look at in the morning. I don't get a call again until late in the afternoon telling me that the issue was indeed my fuel pump which is what I brought it in for in the first place! I told Susan that I better be credited for the repairs that were done and she told me that I could have a partial credit because they still needed to run some tests so incited of the fuel pump being over $500 it would be $330. Thursday rolls around and they have had my Jeep for a week now and again I don't get a call. And again I have to sit on hold only to feel stupid by Susan and find out that the mechanic didn't start working on it. Friday, the work is finally done and I get a call from Susan again late in the day telling me its ready for pickup, but since I had no ride there I was not able to get it until Saturday. When I go to pick it up I first check to see that its running and it is, but there were still some electrical issues of it stalling. I go into pay and get my Jeep out of there. I get it home and its still running like crap so I call to make an appointment at a trusted mechanic who works on Jeeps and I take it there on Monday. Since the issue weren't resolved I called the store manager at Pep Boys and told him my situation and that I would go over his head if I needed to. He told me to see what the other shop said and that we would go from there. The issue wound up being a bad ground wire in the rear causing loss of power and the fuel pump to malfunction. It was a simple fix that cost me $200. At this point I am about $800 into repairs. So I tell the Pep Boys manager whats up and he ends up crediting me the whole amount of my misdiagnosed repairs that they did. I got $550 credited back to me.
