I brought my vehicle to Pepboys only for a simple NY State inspection. Before coming here, the vehicle has been checked by the dealer and everything was good to go. The mechanic in Pepboys first proposed to change the engine oil, and I decline. Secondly, he pursued me to change to break rotors and pads otherwise the vehicle would not pass the inspection. I declined again and he scraped the old sticker with a failure of the inspection report. I simply brought the vehicle to the dealer 10 minutes later, and IT PASSED THE INSPECTION WITHOUT FIXING ANYTHING! What a fraud in Pepboys! read more

I've going to Pep boys 38-50 21st Street Long Island City, NY 11101 for over 5 years. After learning they are under new supervision I found out that this pep boys seem like they running a scam. I went there in august 2019 and again august 2020 with my car in the same condition as in 2019 with actual replacing tires and fixing any problem it may have had only to find them to fail because a crack that's always been there on one of the headlights that I was passed with so they could charge me $700 to fix and a windshield wiper they actually replaced their before my inspection months before. So I went to my mechanic and ho has worked on my car since I had the car. He replaced both headlights did a complete check of the car and the only issue with the car was the battery I purchased from pep boys last year is dead and won't keep charge. I brought the car back to pep boys wasn't going to get an inspection there but since they have to replace my battery I will go back there and see what they have to say now. Brandon called me saying "oh your Engine needs to be clean" or whatever and that will fix the problem and that was $141.49 and Matthew need to drive the car for at least 40-80 miles which I did 60 miles a left my car there. Now all of a sudden after calling and speaking with Chris one of the most unprofessional individual I came across stated my break lights is out, mind you I saw my break lights working when my the mechanics was reversing my car out the shop the same day brought my car to pep boys and the mechanic checked my entire car to make sure there is no issue with the car even my breaks to make sure it didn't need to be changed. I WOULD RECOMMEND NOT TO GO TO PEP BOYS BECAUSE THEY ARE SCAMMING CUSTOMERS, if I go pick up my car and my break lights are not working because their hours of operation has changed I'm causing hell in the shop. If these people tampered with car to make me paid them to work on my car I will be contacting everyone on these review threads and start a class action law suit on pep boys. Everyone dealing pandemics issues and just cause your business isn't doing well does not give you the right to scam people out of the limit funds they themselves have. You have to wait on line just to see a tool which you may not buy as the cashier also works the floor. Takes forever to get anything done, they move like sloths. Made a 10am appt. and two hours later my car is just sitting there with the hood up and no one working on it. It's now 12:50pm and they are just starting. The appointment means nothing. My experience was so horrible I felt compelled to make an account and write my first yelp review. I went to Pep Boys because I figured I could trust a brand name and corporate entity over an average mom and pop garage. Boy was I wrong. I went for a simple oil change and inspection. I received a phone call about 30 minutes in stating that my check engine light was on and that it would cost an extra $80 for them to check it. I thought this was odd because I figured that them checking out the car was part of the cost of the inspection. Anyway, the guy on the phone told me that they would charge it to me only if they couldn't figure out what the problem was and that it would be waived if they could figure it out. I didn't have many options so I accepted the charge and told them to look into it. They failed me and told me that I needed over 10 parts replaced and stated that it would cost me a total of $2,300 to have my vehicle passed. They also said the only way to have the $80 fee waived was if I had the worked done. After arguing with the representative on the phone, I was able to get the fee waived. I ended up paying about $70 for the failed inspection and oil change. When I picked up my vehicle, they had taken off the inspection sticker, making me a prime target for police who would have to assume I never got my car inspected; the radio no longer worked, and they had not replaced my previously oil change sticker - leading me to believe that they had not actually changed my car's oil. I took my car to a mechanic my family knows - something I should have done from the start - and he passed the vehicle and charged a total of $160 after cleaning the engine's intake manifold which was causing the check engine light, and installing a new battery. read more

Made an appointment and purchased tires on-line. When we arrived at appointment they took the car and told us it would be 1 1/2 to 2 hours. That was great. An hour after we left car they called to tell us they did not have the tires and couldn't get them till Friday. ( appointment was Tuesday ). When we went to pick up car he said he could have other tires delivered by 2 o'clock on Wednesday. So we made another appointment to come back the next day at 3. When we showed up they did not have those tires either. They said the truck didn't show up to deliver tires. I guess they couldn't call us to let us know!!! First and Last experience with Pep Boys! SCAM ARTISTS DO NOT GO HERE I was called after dropping off my car for an oil change saying that I needed new break pads and rotors on my car and that they could do it for me then and there for $950. I politely declined and then was offered discounts to persuade me to say yes. Again I declined and was told I shouldn't drive the car until I get them replaced. To be cautious I did not attend a birthday as it was a far drive. I later took my car to a mechanic that I trust and was told I had almost 8mm of break pad left and rotors were untouched and I shouldn't need new break pads for at least another 10-15k miles. read more

i needed some antifreeze , oil and other important stuff that everyone should keep in the trunk and pep boys is less then a 10 minute walk from my fav diner and cuz is running late so its a trip to pep to waste some time. they carry everything you need for your ride and prices are fair . got to hear a bit of drama as some dude who was getting his car service in the repair area was shouting at the pep boy mechanic until the manager stepped in and calmed the drama . spent about 60 bucks and everything i purchased was needed including the flashlight which i may lose or give away just like the many other ones. so remember folks , antifreeze, motor oil , basic tool kit , flash light, gloves , flares, is important to keep in your trunk and dont forget the spare tire and jack. read more

G been a long time customer with pep boys for over 7 years, I have brought my last 3 vehicles to you and have had thousands of dollars worth of repairs done. I never had an issue before this. On Friday 09/16/22 I sent my car to pep boys via pep boys tow through the 800 Pepboys number. The tow truck came and dropped my car off to the Baldwin, ny location under warranty for a service repair that I received in February. I called the store @ 4:51 pm to make sure my car was dropped off, they told me it just got there not to long ago. I went up there later that evening to check on the status of my car. I was told that there was only one mechanic on duty and they will be working on my car on Saturday instead. Saturday morning I called them @10:24am to check the status of my car, they told me they hadn't started it yet they will call me after they check it out, they called me back @11:12am and said the key was broken from the fob. They told me they weren't responsible the tow truck driver done it. No matter if it was done by the mechanics or the tow truck driver, their both under pep boys. Not too mention if the tow truck driver handed them a key in 2 pieces no one noticed it? They had many opportunities to bring it to my attention if they received the key broken. Also the tow truck driver jumped my car right here in my parking lot, put the car in neutral and towed it up the tow bed. He would not have been able to get my car on or off the flat bed if the key was broken. Now they are telling me there is nothing they can do that I have to buy another key, but I don't understand why I would need to buy another key when someone under pep boys is responsible. read more

Staff? Not at all trained. I had an appointment at 11am. The car wasnt brought in until 1125am. Car sat in lift for 20 minutes while tech helped another lesser trained mechanic with another car. I asked the counter help person to ask the tech what the correct ait pressure for the tired were. As in. Please read the tired or use ypur tire pressure gauge He replied. They are all 35psi. I laughed. I told him that was a ridiculous statememt. Each manufacturer has a different psi for each tire. He just walked away and shook his head as if i was bothering him. I use their online booking tool, and that has removed a lot of potential frustrations. I book online, drive up, and they call when my car is all set. tl;dr I took the car in to get it checked out before a long roadtrip, and they literally made it worse. I was going on a long, 1000 mile roadtrip, and thought it might be a good idea to get the car checked out beforehand, so I made the mistake of bringing it to this pep boys. First of all, it was very disappointing to see the manager walking around, getting up close to customers to talk to them, and shouting across the store, all while not wearing a face mask. Did he forget how the entire city had to shut down because of a global pandemic just a few months ago? Just wear a piece of cloth on your face, it's not that hard. Moving on, they charged a couple hundred dollars to align the wheels. I hadn't noticed any major issues, but I figured maybe they ran some test that showed that they were off, which is what I brought the car in for in the first place, so I told them to go ahead with the wheel alignment. But then when we left on the roadtrip, I noticed right away that the car had started veering to the right! And not just a little either, if I took my hands off the wheel for even a second, the car would start going off the road. So basically they charged to fix a nonexistent problem, and made it worse. They also tried to charge me an extra 300 bucks to perform various maintenance work that they said needed to be urgently done. But I take the car in for a yearly inspection, so I doubt that there's any maintenance work that's actually overdue. Plus the car only has 30k miles on it. And when I looked up the work they wanted to do, it was all stuff that needs to be done, say, every five years or every 50k miles. So how could it possibly be overdue if I take it in every year, and it hardly has any miles on it? Fortunately, I said no, even though the maskless manager really tried to pressure me into have the "repairs" done. So I made an appointment for 7pm on a Friday night (their closing time is 9pm), thinking that most people must be out and about. Arriving at 6:55pm, at the service counter I'm told that there is a person doing state inspection and that I will have to wait. I told him that last time I was here, it took them 1hr and 20 mins (for the synthetic oil change package which included overall inspection plus tire rotation), so as long as I'll get serviced by the end of the day I'm fine. The staff apologized saying that they were supposed to have two mechanics but only one was in. I was observing closely as I waited. My car wasn't getting worked on until a little pass 8pm. Then 10-15 mins before 9pm, it was "done". Wow. What? I didn't see my tires getting switched. At the counter I asked if the rotation was done, and the answer is no. I'm quite sure they also didn't do the inspection. The staff "promised" me that next time I come he'll do the rotation for me for free. Dude, next time the car needing a change of synthetic oil will be a while. And, also... it is included in the package, so obviously you will do it for "free". I understand that at 9pm people want to get the heck out of there. So do I. I didn't get the service that I ordered online and paid for, when I was there on-time. I even worry if the mechanic actually did a good job at all on changing the oil. Pep Boys, you need to have a better system. If someone is coming in for a scheduled work and you only have 1 mechanic, don't take a walk in customer unless the scheduled one is late. Recently I took my vehicle in to check my brakes due to it was pulling to the left when I brake. The mechanic checked the front brakes by visually inspecting the pads only. He did not test the car on the road he didn't check for a faulty caliper or a clogged brake line. He stated it needed an alignment but his alignment machine could not accommodate my vehicle. This process took an hour. They returned my car and I took it elsewhere immediately they discovered a faulty caliper. Had it replaced and the car is stopping as it should. You could see the difference from an experience mechanic. It took him 15 min to diagnose the problem and even showed me before removing it. In no time I was back on the road extremely satisfied. It's a shame Pep boys hires young inexperienced mechanics that have no clue how to diagnose simple problems. I even saw the mechanic struggling to open the hood of the vehicle and it is not in any way faulty. It was evident the mechanic has not been around cars long enough to even know how to open the front hood. When I take my car for service I don't want someone in training with no supervision working on my car. Especially if they are unfamiliar with this type of vehicle or brake service. Not a good look Pep Boys. No confidence in your mechanics diagnostics skills. Hopefully, this was a off day and can be corrected with better training. read more

I made an appointment for 8am because I had other appointments in the afternoon. This store doesn't care if you booked an appointment or not. They will serve customers on a first-come basis. Additionally, I was quoted $15 per tire for mount & balance. Once I got there, I was quoted $27 per tire. Supposedly $15 is only for balancing. I don't understand how the clerk could have misunderstood me when I told her that I had recently purchased brand new set of tires and would like to replace my current tires. I even reiterated several times that I need to BOTH mount & balance. I will likely get outta here at 11am. So if you want to book an appointment for 8am and leave around 11am for a 30min job...then come here. Personally, I would never return. This shop is rubbish!!! Oh... It is now 10:50am and I went to inspect the job. Not surprised to find that the mechanic put asymmetrical tires backwards on all four tires. Now, he has to re-mount and re-balance all four tires again. PATHETIC!!! The nightmare continues... No one noticed a cut on one of the tires because they were initially put on backwards! Pep Boys put me on the road with a tire that is leaking air from the cut. Luckily, Tire Rack was nice enough to send me a new tire. read more

I just bought a second hand car - my first car in the U.S.! It was well maintained by the previous owner and, according to the Carfax report I ran prior to purchasing the vehicle, it had just been serviced a month ago. Despite this, I chose to go to Pep Boys for a Change Oil (something my car didn't need for another 5 months at the very least) and have tires checked. I chose Pep Boys because there was one nearby and they offered coupons! Semi-Synthetic oil would come out to only $29.99+ (instead of $39.99+) after applying the coupon. I made an appointment for 9am but changed it to 10am last minute - this was done online. I arrived at 10am and there was a cue for service. I was told that I was the 4th person to come in with a 10am appointment. They couldn't understand why their system/website allowed that many to be booked. Needless to say, it was going to be a wait. I didn't mind; I had nothing scheduled till noon anyway. I killed time shopping around their store (looked at car plate frames, cleaning supplies, etc.). By 1130am I noticed my car was still parked and hadn't been brought into the garage. I called their attention to the fact that I needed to leave by 12pm. They assured me I would be done by then. When it was time to pay, they were charging me almost $100 ($98 or $99). I told them all I wanted was the $29.99+. That's when I realized I wasn't even asked what kind of oil I wanted when I checked in, so it seems they automatically used fully synthetic oil. Even then, on their website, fully synthetic oil was only $59.99+ after applying a coupon, so I don't know how we got close to $100. They said they would give me a "discount". In the end they made me pay $39.99+ (came out to $42 with tax). In short, I got fully synthetic oil for the price of semi-synthetic oil. I still feel bad I didn't get the $10 coupon discount but I did get a much better oil, even if I didn't ask for it. They are getting 2 stars for the misunderstanding plus the fact that they didn't live up to their "30-minute guarantee with appointment". Would I go back? Yeah. But I will remember to clarify total costs beforehand. read more

Rachel is hands down the sweetest, most thorough, and competent person I've had the pleasure of working with for an auto issue. I had a huge nail in my tire and she helped me call my insurance and submit all the paperwork they needed. She didn't make me feel like I was an inconvenience and kept me updated when she had any information. Rather than just letting me handle everything on my own, she was upfront about what I needed to do and tried her best to get most of the process done for me. I'd give the place 5 stars, but minus one star because the wait was 4 hours. The place has a nice lounge area that's away from all the fumes of the shop. Couches are comfy, TV is nice, and they have a little coffee station. I'll be back for my other auto needs. read more

You do have to wait a couple of hours, I want to know where are these magical places that people go to where their cars are serviced in half hour. I went today after work, and without appointment they checked my car and they serviced it. This not f#@!$ NASCAR where you go through and fix your car, yea I waited and I was happy going home with a fixed car. Chris and Mariah were super nice and everybody in general. Your New Hartford NY store should be closed! I had to weave through the parking lot like a drunken sailor in order to avoid the 4 foot wide potholes. Upon completing that mission I made it into the store to purchase headlight bulbs. It took me 5 minutes to find the correct bulbs and I proceeded to checkout. When I got to the register I then stood there for at least two minutes. There was no one to cash me out! There was at least 5 employees in the service dept standing around talking to each other. There was one person sitting at a table by the exit that was less than interested with me. I don't know if he was an employee. I stood there waiting for someone to help but, no one came. I did try to make eye contact with the service employees but, to no avail. I left my bulbs on the register and walked out! Very last time I will visit this store as a person and as someone who sends multiple vehicles there for fleet service. My business will go elsewhere! read more
