No matter how desperate you are - do NOT take your car here for an inspection. Owner 'Matt' agreed to squeeze us in. They barely looked at the car And it passed with flying colors. We drove around the block and parked for restrictions. While we were sitting there -less than 10 minutes after driving it away from this garage- someone pointed out our tire had a bubble! A very dangerous undrivable condition. When I went back to Matt, he said that was not an issue, and he was correct to give us the inspection sticker. Obviously it's not. I would have been better off finding someone not squeezing me in so we could drive the car today. And Response was so offensive he doesn't deserve our patronage. read more

This might be the first review I've left for a non restaurant business but had such a good experience with United that I felt compelled to share. I'm not a big car buff and regular maintenance, inspections etc always lead to me being slightly unsure about what the service entails, what it should cost, wondering if I'm being overcharged etc... in the few auto shops I've been to over the years, there seems to be an unwritten "no questions" policy -- apparently we're all supposed to be auto experts. All the above is why I was so delighted by my experience with United. I was able to schedule my inspection with a quick and pleasant call. They took me in on time, conducted the whole thing in under 10 minutes and had me on my way. They were pleasant and kind and didn't seem so in a rush like other auto shops I've been to. I have been going to United for years. Great service and very honest. Only downside is that they are closed on weekends.

They put a new battery in my car in May. Yesterday, my car was totally dead. AAA towed me back to this shop where the owner admitted they put in a bad battery. They changed the battery under the warranty. At one point all 4 of them were looking under my hood. Why all 4 for a battery? I thought the boss was a little gruff back in May, but this time he was mean, mocking and argumentative after I asked for a receipt. I had a smile on my face and was friendly, but no matter. I am pretty sure I was called a maricon too. Nothing close to a smile by anyone at this place. I never argued at all but no matter. You should have seen these guys fall all over themselves when a young woman came in for an inspection; treatment that this friendly 69 year old did not get. Maybe it was close to lunchtime. PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE CALLING!! This place is great but unfortunately this week their Yelp page was HACKED by SCAMMERS. I started contacting them about my car not realizing I was speaking to scammers who were not even in NYC! Please only call the REAL PHONE NUMBER OF THIS BUSINESS (See attached photo of their business card for proof!) 212-650-1548 I became suspicious when the scammers asked me to Zelle or Cashapp them BEFORE coming in... just to make the appointment! So I called A&A Imported Motors Inc. (a nearby shop) and asked if this was customary in Manhattan since I just moved here a year ago. Thankfully the guy I spoke to already had heard about the situation and saved me from getting scammed! He gave me the real phone number and I called right away... with no fake cash deposit, they said I could bring the car over right away. The guy who helped me and was so nice. I told him about the situation and he said other people had unfortunately paid the money to the thieves. They couldn't fix my hybrid battery, but he ran a diagnostic and was as helpful as possible. I will definitely go there next time I need service. So please-check the number before you call ANY auto repair shop... this seems to be a new scam. These guys are the best. I used to bring my old car to them in the 90s, and they were always honest and fair with their pricing. I bought a new car during the pandemic and when the warranty expired, I went to United, and sure enough Matt and Tommy are still there, looking like almost nothing has changed. I also sent my brother in law who was in from out of town to see them when he needed new brakes, and he raved about how they treated him. Very best. Almost did not write this because I don't want too many people to find this gem of a place.

Last year, my car's clutch pedal dropped to the floor. United was near where it was parked, so I took it in. They replaced the master and slave clutch cylinders. Less than a year later, the pedal was soft again. I took it back and they replaced the master (what they thought was the problem) for free and bled the system. A few weeks later, same issue. Took it back, bled again. Finally, I noticed a hydraulic fluid leak from under the car. Took it back and they replaced the slave cylinder for free. This was probably the original problem. The parts they used were the OEM parts - saw the box - so quality wasn't an issue here. Lesson #1: hydraulic problems in cars are a b*tch to troubleshoot, at least until the leak becomes big enough to be visible. Lesson #2: United stands behind their work, even after the warranty period on the parts has passed, and will go to great lengths to keep their customers happy. Tommy, the owner, is a stand up guy. Lesson #3: Don't buy a car where only 0.05% of the examples imported into the US had a stick shift. Don't buy an autotragic either, though :) read more

I just got off the phone with someone at this establishment to get my car inspected. It's a 2006 Honda CR-V. I set an appointment and then asked how much it would cost....he said $77. I looked up the fee (as well as called an auto body shop around the corner from this shop) and the cost is $37. I smell a rip off. Buyer beware. read more

The last place in Manhattan to inspect my 2012 Honda CRV told me I needed almost $1000 in repairs before they'd pass it. I declined the work, but lo and behold they passed it anyway. New to the City, I didn't check Yelp, hadn't ever experienced an inspection issue, and had just spent $ to ready the car for the move here from FL. This year based on Yelp reviews I chose United. United made an appt for me and had me out of there in 30 mins. Zero recommendations for repairs. I asked them to change the oil and perform an engine check in prep for an upcoming trip. I have had several contacts with these people, all of them were positive. I am especially appreciative of this since, after my husband passed away, the predators were coming at me from all directions. These people treated me fairly on several occasions: 1. My husband passed away in April and the car was not used for a couple of months. I called a number of places in the neighborhood, none of whom would agree to come to the garage and give me a jump start. In fact, the staff in my own building made some excuse about not having a charger. This building staff seemed to think I was too stupid to realize that one only needed jumper cables. I found the card of United Auto Repair among my husband's effects and called them. After all the other refusals to help me, They agreed to come to my garage and jump start the battery. The charge: $25. 2. The car battery died again. When I called the mechanics who had installed it, I was advised it was 5 years old and needed to be replaced. I called United again to give me a new battery. I also asked for an oil change since the car had not been driven in a while. The bill was under $200. This is a reasonable amount of money for Manhattan. 3. I kept having problems with the new battery. In part, this was because I hadn't started driving again. But also, I later discovered that Subaru has parking lights which I didn't notice I had left on. But I didn't know this when I took the car back. They replaced the battery rechecked the electrical systems and changed the battery. They also encouraged me to start driving the car again. The charge: nothing. 4. The last contact I had was an inspection on 9/23/15 for which I was charged $37. The car is a 2002 Subaru which has been very well maintained and has very little mileage. The point is, they didn't find a lot of "necessary repairs" to run up the bill. As a widow who is not thinking straight, and as a woman in general, I am aware that many mechanics would really try to take advantage of me. But I feel that United did good work and treated me very fairly. I am grateful for that. read more

Brought my 36 year old Mercedes Diesel in for the annual inspection and to check a problem with a intermittent warning light that related to my ignition system. Left the car and 2 hours later they called telling me it was a very expensive electronic part that was needed, but they felt it really had no effect on the running of the car and I should just live with it. I never been to this repair shop before but my old shop was forced to move out of their location so I figured I give this place a try. The owners were these two stout Irish fellows, sort of gruff and no nonsense types that looked at me as a typical over talkative self possessed New Yorker. But these guys were honest men! They charged me $25 labor to check out my electrical system and $10 for the inspection. I was expecting to pay hundreds of dollars for glow plugs and other repairs. What more can I say, I will go back to them again and, with my car, it surely will happen sooner than later! read more
