Our car battery died, and I called A&A immediately. I dropped my car off and within hours it was ready and good as new. This ship is professional, friendly and efficient. A few weeks later when our car was hit while parked in a lot, we brought it right to A & A. They worked with our insurance to get an estimate quickly and began work. They even assisted us with obtaining a rental in the area. They kept us updated on the parts arrival, body and mechanical work. Our vehicle was ready in no time and looks amazing. Not only did they do a fantastic job, but they also saw that our inspection was due in a few weeks and took care of that at no charge! Joseph and his team made a stressful situation completely calm. Found this place on the NY DMV website as a place that does the required NY State inspection of my dad's 2020 Cadillac CT5. When they saw a fault light they opened the hood and discovered a rat's nest. A rat or rats had started living in the car because my dad, who is elderly, barely ever drives it since 2023. The rat(s) had gnawed through multiple wires to various systems. Given the reputation of auto repair places I was very wary. But they made sure the whole situation was documented and the insurance company covered it. They also repaired a bunch of scratches and dings that had happened over the years, at reasonable prices. Car looks and drives like new. Would never have thought I would find a place only a few blocks from my residence that does high quality work, and truly cares about doing a proper job! read more

I have never written a YELP review but this review is worth expressing to others because my experience with Joseph at A&A was a refreshing departure from the norm in the auto repair business. I could write about their professionalism or how courteous they were but Josephs honesty is what compelled me to write this review: I had a mechanical issue with my driver-side window and Joseph quoted me what the charge would be. Although I knew it was going to be expensive I had no choice but to give the go-ahead. Later that day I received a call from Joseph that he was able to do the job for less than I was quoted. I was shell-shocked that an automotive repair guy would actually lower the rate. That has never happened to me. Not only will I forever be taking my car to A&A for repairs but I am going to share this with all my friends in the city who have cars. read more

I'm writing this post about 6 months later and I'm still a little pissed off about my experience here. Only reason I didn't give them 1 star is because they did what I needed - which was installing a new battery which they charged $330 for... on an '07 Accord. I was a little shocked, but didn't try to negotiate or anything. I just sort of accepted it as the "city tax." Which I could be understanding of... BUT, they tried to pull the wool over my eyes by claiming I needed a new alternator, which they said was $600, plus labor, plus tax ($900+ out the door)... for an '07 Accord - nothing fancy... told them I wanted to sleep on it - very glad I did! Ended up taking my car to a hole-in-the-wall Automotive Repair shop DEEEEP in Brooklyn, after being referred there by a friend. That mechanic said I could buy the alternator myself and just pay him $50-$100 for the labor ($200 at Advanced Auto), which I appreciated. When I got there, he said, "Your alternator is fine. Who told you needed a new alternator?? No charge sir. Return the alternator." I tried to tip him $50 as I was originally expecting to pay $900+. He refused to accept my tip. It was never really about the money at that point. I also understand the business needs to make money, but don't LIE to POTENTIAL GOOD CUSTOMERS WHO LIVE 2 BLOCKS AWAY AND COULD REPEAT TONS OF BIZ!! Bottom line, I really wanted to support these guys as it would have been so convenient, being only 2 blocks away and they seemed like good people... plus, I would have been a great client as I have an older car that would require tons of work. As others have said, the staff is very friendly. If you're having an inspection done, then its great service, but do not have your oil changed unless your ready to get taken even worse for something more expensive. I was charged $156 for an Sync oil change, I could have had this done for $70 all included even now during the covid price increases. They even charged me tax on top of my inspection which is not legally taxable. Below is what they charged so beware. I will never go back again. First off, I'm not a big one for writing on Yelp, or any social media for that matter. I'm choosing to write about A & A because, as a customer for over 30 years now, they 1) deserve my thanks for unfailingly doing the job I both hope and expect of them, and 2) for their benefit and for that of potential customers who may be looking for a good garage. My advice is--give them your work! I first went there when, having moved to NYC in 1988, I was looking for a good indy for my 1981 BMW 320i. Having checked out their shop at the time, I noticed both a high-end Mercedes (in 1988, less common than now), and a big diesel truck, both worked on in what was evidently a well-organized shop. I figured I'd give them a try. Through various cars, including fairly new and old ones since then (currently a cherry BMW), I've returned regularly (except when I've had dealer maintenance coverage). I know a thing or two about car repair, but I'm no pro mechanic. I have to say they have always taken care of my cars with care, skill, and good value. Joe, the owner, is a stand-up guy. Front desk people David (earlier), and Lynne (for a long time now), and Joseph are knowledgeable and easy to deal with. In short, I recommend them highly. read more

This shop is a little jewel that does great big work at fair prices and no BS attitude. They take care of our 2005 Lexus like it was theirs. The car comes back clean and we always know what to expect. Lynne is organized at the front desk and Joseph is a great customer service manager. I have lived in the burbs and the city and put these guys' expertise, value, and delivery at the top of 40 years of dealing with repair shops. I just popped in to ask where I might purchase a set of feeler gauges (to set up my guitars). The guy was super-helpful going so far as to phone a place on 125th St to see if they had any. I got a set at the first place he sent me to. If this is the way a non-customer gets treated, I would say that A&A will treat their customers like Royalty. Nice Rolls Royce being serviced. A & A was excellent. I started going there last year. I went in for my yearly inspection. During that time recognized extensive damage, therefore unable to complete the inspection. They informed me that the car is not safe to be driven. They suggested to contact my insurance. Once there was an inspection, they quickly got on the repairs. The extent was a lot and they completed it ahead of anticipated time. They remaining in communication with me regarding insurance inspections, what was needed and time frame. It was completed ahead of the anticipated completion time and I was able to get it back prior to the holiday weekend. Everyone there is extremely kind and helpful. From Joe, who met me when I pulled in the Lynn in the office. One of the other gentleman insisted on helped move all my belongings out of my car into the rental. There was a lot of stuff since I was planning to leave for vacation after the inspection. They did all this with kindness and professionalism. A&A are a great find! I have gotten oil change done, brake repairs, and recently car inspection. I find them to be cordial and honest about the service a car needs. The mechanic informed me that the brakes are wearing off but can last another 2-3 months in usage instead of pushing me to get it done right then. Brought my car in after an aluminum valve stem failed. Was in and out in less than 1.5 hours, which is impressive considering how many cars they were working on at the time. Zero star is more accurate. Joe and his guys unplugged my intake manifold sensor so that my check engine light would come on - that's after charging me $400 to install brake pads that I provided in the event that I needed brake pads. I never got an estimate or diagnosis first, just steamrolled and shaken. "We changed your brake pads," Joe said, "because that's what you said you wanted, but you still had 40-50% on your old pads." Well, thanks a lot for the disservice and the utterly shameless deception. read more

Is "zero stars" possible on Yelp? Brought car in with dead battery, and was charged over $200 for a $110 battery, only to have a car that would not start with the same symptoms 3 days later. Rude service writer (wife of owner?) brings a tiny bit of in-your-face Bensonhurst to the Upper East Side, where the rest of us all try to be nice to each other. No apology about stranding me with the same exact problem, no offer to look at the car on a priority basis, just a rude "you need a new alternator" in reply to my statement that, after paying over $200, I still had the same problem. On a Monday got "come in Tuesday" then, a call back later with "we cant take you until Thursday". Never mind my car is not drivable entirely due to their use of a voltmeter rather than a proper "under load" battery tester as used at even the lowest-priced auto-parts store. Then the other shoe drops "We found a tech note - the voltage regulator can be intermittent - we will replace the alternator for $700. Replaced the voltage regulator myself with the proper bosh part for well under $100, as the tech note said "voltage regulator" not "alternator" and the bearings were fine on the alternator. Wouldn't trust these morons with adjusting the handlebars on my bike, let alone my Volvo. Overcharged, under served, and attempted fraud to turn a $100 voltage regulator replacement into a $1000 battery and alternator replacement. Run, don't walk! read more

I inherited a car (a 2008 Saab) and this place is down the block from my apartment so I figured I would try them out to fix the couple issues that the car had. They are always busy so I figured they had to be pretty good. A&A were extremely helpful. They conferred with me before doing anything to make sure I approved the price and procedure. They did not overcharge. They didn't make up problems to get more money. They were even able to fix the brakes that had previously been "fixed" several times. Long story short, my mom had the brake master cylinder replaced at least 2 or 3 times before I got the car, but the brakes were still going to the floor. A&A investigated until they figured out what the issue actually was - a faulty abs pump. They tracked down a replacement for me (since Saab went out they don't make the part anymore) and installed it. They were also very timely and always answered my questions. I accidentally locked my keys in my car when I was double parked on 92nd street. Needless to say I was moments away from a panic attack. I ran in the shop and asked if anyone could help me. Joe probably spent over an hour trying different ways to open my door but other mechanics came out to help as well. After finally getting the door open I tried to compensate him for the time he spent helping me and he refused to take it and said drive safely. I am so grateful! He saved my day. read more

I was stuck on the side of the FDR with a broken tire and failed miserably at trying to slap on the spare. Google led me to this place and it was the best decision I could make. I was told they were not insured work on my car outside of the shop but after some explaining of my situation the owner joe came to my aide and quickly too. He helped me put on the tire and didn't charge me a penny. I was stuck on the road for 2 hours and 6 minutes after joe came I was on my way. These guys are honest. I needed bodywork after a fender bender and these guys reasoned that only 1 panel needed replacing, so it was pretty cheap to fix. I took it in for a "check up" and a new sticker and after looking the car over, they said all I needed was a sticker ($37 total). Both times, they could have said I need a "new this or that" but they didnt. For that, they get all my future auto repair biz. read more

I had been quoted several hundred dollars worth of damage to my 2005 Mercedes from other repair shops, so I decided to bring the car into A&A for another diagnosis before putting such a large amount of money on the line. A&A was not only flexible about keeping my car for a long time (there were times during the week I couldn't pick it up), but they found that the actual damage to my car would cost significantly less to repair than what I was quoted before at less experienced shops. I brought my Honda in last week for an estimate to repair minor fender (and possible wheel well and door hinge) damage, after receiving an informal $3k estimate elsewhere. Joseph at A&A estimated $750, so I acted on my impulse to get the work done right away. The car was repaired within two days, and I paid the estimate (plus tax). The work was well done.
