This review specifically relates to the auto service area of the store. Very dissatisfied with their level of service, as a simple oil change took two hours even though 1) I had an appointment and 2) it was promised to be completed in 45-60 minutes. If they were honest and told me they were backed up, I would have been fine with rescheduling for another day. Instead, I question their integrity - what else might they be deceiving us about their services? Reserved a part and went for installation. When we arrived, was told they didn't have it but they had a different one. I said no to that. Guy said he'd go check for it. He found it. But it was going to cost much more. I said no. Guy said would honor price but that didn't quite happen. I noticed it was not installed right. Mechanic came into store to reprimand me for moving my car back to service bay as instructed by the sales person. He also told me I needed another part but didn't tell me which. I was trying to figure what I needed but turns out nothing was needed. They had a different mechanic finish the job. I was feeling torn because this was the first bad experience. Long time LIC Pep Boys Client and always happy to let them have my business. Being a long time time client, I was compelled to write a review. Just always had good interaction with the auto services staff, but today was an exceptional one. Coming in the morning is always busy especially for an auto shop/store. I stood waiting for alittle in line while they got themselves organized. Didn't expect them to be happy, helpful, attentative because of the amount of work that was piling up for the day. When they finally got to me, Rachel stopped anything and everything she was doing to assist with my car needs. Even though it was just two tire changes I needed for that day, she didn't hesistate to provide 110% customer service. Friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Will be going with only 4 stars because store was understaffed and it looks to fall on Rachel and the auto service reps doing both auto services desk and cashier. The old location had them seperate. I don't understand why they would combine both and give the auto services reps additional work. Hoping the quality of work and knowledge don't change due to additional work burden and understaffing. read more

Had to replace two of my tires. Went online and purchased two on sale tires. Waited two weeks for the tires but the order never came in and the order got automatically cancelled by Pep Boys. It wasn't the store's fault but had to do more with their inventory/delivery issue. I then called the store and ask if a certain tire I wanted was in stock. I spoke with Tarik and he was really helpful over the phone. He verified there were 4 tires available, Tarik then coordinated on his end to make sure I got my two tires. Tarik also set my installation appt for the next morning. Went to Pep Boys at 8 am the next day as the 2nd customer in line. Tire installation and paid took around 1 hour. If you need a specific part, it is best to call the store directly. Schedule your appt first thing in the morning and ahead of time as well. read more

Bad experience but ultimately met with professionalism and empathy! The 2.5 hour and $103 oil change. They said no one was ahead of me and that I came at the perfect time. Groceries ruined, work appointments missed. Update: they comped my bill and explained it was a new guy. Should be noted that all employees treated me with great respect even when I was losing it. These people are professional scam artists. Low-life mechanics and salesmen whose only goal is to separate you from your money. I went for a safety inspection, and they told me I had to pay nearly $600 for replacing brake pads. They also threatened me with failing my safety inspection if I didn't get that optional service done. I declined, went next door and passed my inspection for less than $50. read more

I come back to pep boys and asked to check belt tensioner and repair power steering line and other stuff to fix it . Everyone one was helpful, mostly front desk staff. Service was slow and i had an appointment. I don't know what they did to my tires during rotation but I'm slipping and sliding across the highway. They incorrectly installed new wind shield wipers so i can see them from the passenger side door. The checkout line was a joke, like two employees playing store. This place needs work. The only reasons were that it's close and you can make an appointment. Well, once again, they demonstrated their ineptitude. This time, their state inspection machine "was down." That's it, last chance. I cannot believe that this place is still in business, it's obvious they don't care about their customers. First of all, my 30min oil change took 90min, even with a reservation. The fact that it wasn't even brought into the bay until 3:45pm for a 3pm reservation didn't help that much. I was even 15min early for my appointment. I'm not entirely sure why they even have a reservation system. Secondly, I was told the "Courtesy Vehicle Inspection" would include checking the tires. After 90min of waiting, I was finally cashed out and when I asked if they checked the tires and fluids I was told "yes, that's all included." Upon going out to my car to leave, it was blatantly obvious that my front tires were still low. When I brought it to the attention of the mechanic who did my oil change, he literally said, "yeah, I noticed that too." Seriously. Apparently he noticed it but he did nothing about it. It wasn't even noted on my paperwork. I can't really be sure that anything they inspected was okay if that rather major detail was supposedly noticed but ignored. Ultimately, he did fill the two front tires after I mentioned it, but apparently this "Courtesy Vehicle Inspection" simply means inspecting the car, noticing things that are problematic, but not writing them down or doing anything about them unless the driver also notices the issues himself and says something. That's assuming they actually even inspected anything. Who knows? read more

After getting my state inspection failed by great bear (you figure out who it is), unless I paid them over $3k in non-necessary charges. I made an appointment with Pep Boys @8am on a Sat morning. I had chosen the other place first since they had better reviews but there was some warning signs as recent Yelp reviews were pretty bad. Welp, I experienced it first hand! I still needed the state inspection so I found the MC tires (look it up, they got the big NYC STATE INSPECTION sign) was well reviewed on Yelp. I went to them @7:30am in the morning and they told me it was a 2 hour wait. I specifically went there early in the morning to get it done as quickly as possible. The guy said he wanted to do a thorough job ie do the windshield wipers, etc. Ugh, I got a bad premonition. It looked like it would be a repeat of great bear. So I was actually going to go back MC the next day and endure the 2hr wait and hopefully no shenangians when, I said what the heck, let me try Pep Boys but do it at a time when they weren't busy. So I setup 8am Sat appointment online, I got there exactly on time and there were already 2-3 people in the lounge. I spoke with Dana. She quoted 45 minutes and it was done in 45 minutes. No fuss, no muss. I have full empathy for all the other people who have given Pep Boys negative reviews. I'm sure it was deserved up till a point. I think you have to be a little more patient with Pep Boys. I would rather choose the slower option than the evil option. read more

I would give no stars if it were an option. Just another large corporate company trying to tell you things thinking you don't know what they are talking about to squeeze money out of you. First, I work in NJ, live in Queens, making getting my car serviced for inspection difficult (my own problem) right around the time my inspection was due I hit a deer and needed minor work done so it would pass. I called this auto shop at 2:30 pm to confirm they still did inspections and that the person would be there at 7:30. They said he would be, I asked if I need an appointment and they said no. I come in at 7:05. They say "oh we can our guy left." I immediately call them on it and repeat my earlier call. They walk in the back and MAGICALLY THEY CAN DO IT! After 15 minutes they come back and say "ok well the check engine light it on so we can't do it." I say "ok did you run the coder?" Dude looks at me like I'm crazy and repeats what he said. I say it again. He didn't want to run the code to see WHY IT WAS EVEN ON. He came back saying it was a sensor and some more bullshit, spewing hundreds in cost that they "couldn't do tonight (despite them being open another 1.5 hours?!?). Completely lazy, incompetent mechanics. Another woman asked me how long I had been waiting as she had made an appointment and they said they wouldn't help her because "they couldn't find it" however she was able to pull the reservation up on her phone. I needed an oil change for my car so I decided it would be a good idea to Pep Boys since I bought new tires for my 2013 Volkswagen from them earlier this year in January. I made an appointment with them becasue I knew something was going to come up when I went in for the work. When I got there I was 10 minutes early for my appointment so I asked them to look at my tire (Continental procontact) since there was a bubble on one of them with less than 3k miles on the tire and since I bought the warranty. They said that will look at it during my oil change. It took almost 2 hours to change my oil, which was miserable enough but, when I asked about the tire they said that they were too busy too look at it even though it is a big safety concern and to come back another day and they will change it for free no problem.. I asked if I have to make an appointment so I don't get turned away becasue they are too busy but the tire rep said it wouldn't be an issue. So I come back a day later to get the tire changed and not only does the rep not remember me, he said the tire is not in stock (once again, very common tire that they sold me) and he would have to order it. So, he "ordered the tire" then and said he will call me when it comes in 2 days later... It has been 5 days now with no call.. I am currently on hold with Pep Boys (after not speaking with a person but with a machine) and it has been 20 minutes without someone picking up.... Some one just picked up after this long wait so I ask about my order and he claims that there is a shipment coming in tomorrow and he "HOPES" the tire will be on that shipment.. How is this not something that can be looked into to give me a definite answer so I don't have to make a 3rd redundant visit?? TLDR; Horrible customer service, but since it's a chain they won't be gone tomorrow so, gotta take the bad with the good with Pep Boys, not to say they deserve more than 2 stars at all.. Fast Forward Months - When they changed my tire they didn't give me back my wheel lock key and when I went back for it obviously they didn't have it. I had to go to Volkswagen to have them remove the current wheel locks and get new ones.. This stupidity costed me $120. read more

I got brake pads for my BMW x6 at a great price. The staff was very patient and knowledgeable and helped me choose the correct brake pads for my car and driving style. One of the staff, I believe her name was Kim, was very courteous and understanding, as I had purchased brake pads at a competitor and they had worn down in less than 4 months so you can guess I was already upset that I had to buy brake pads again, and she helped me choose ones that are a better quality and for a reasonable price, relatively. I was in and out, and didn't waste time waiting around. Will definitely be back and recommend this place. read more

A week after my oil change from pep boys I notice I have oil leaking from the filter as my car has the oil filter on top of the engine. How difficult can it be to do an oil change and replace with the right oil and right filter. I return to profits to fix the issue and the wrong filter was installed. I made an appointment for and again they can't get to my car under the 30 guarantee that is offered. read more

Good grief this place sucks..Always has, even when they were across the street in the old store. . And thats putting it nicely. Parking lot is horrible, its always full and when you walk into the store its like walking into a funeral home quiet but empty. How is the lot full and the store empty? I usually order online because of the savings.. Most orders i end up saving a minimum of $20 which you can't get in store. Once you arrive and ask/tell them about your online purchase their attitude and facial expression change, like as if it bothered them that they had too look for the items themselves. 2 employees if you're lucky and they are always at the register. read more

From what I understand this is a new location that has only been around for a few months. With that said I have more patience than most when realizing the facts about a location. Upon walking into the store I saw the help wanted signs up and figured that since opening they have been short staffed. However, I walked in at 8:15 pm for an oil change and wasn't turned away because they close at 9pm and I've been turned away from other locations with more time before closing. Everyone I dealt with was kind and courteous, no issues with the staff or the level of service. Everything was nice and clean and well organized. Some aspects of their service need to be improved based on the reviews of others but I feel they were very decent and have a lot of potential. read more

Got a flat tire driving on X-mas eve in the rain. Went in the following Sat. morning and was told the wait was 30 minutes for my new tire. Waited 2 hours and my car was finally pulled into the garage- which I didn't mind as I knew 30 minutes was a generous estimate and clients who were there before me were still waiting. As guests started leaving I checked in on my car. After checking in and being promised another 30 minutes until completion my car sat for 45 more minutes without being worked on (I could see my car in the garage through the window). I complained and my car was finished in 15 minutes. A new tire should not require a 4 hour wait in total! Not to mention the estimated wait time was WAY off. I guess there was a big mis-communication with the mechanics but this is unacceptable. I would have gone home instead of waiting on-site. First, they make you wait while the entire crew takes there time to walk around and smoke. They might not test your car but will definitely test your patience. Horrendous. WORST. Purchased a tire at a PEP boys in Connecticut. Blew out a few minutes after it was put on. Had to pay for a hotel and for someone else to put another tire on in the morning. We came to this location to get a refund because the Connecticut location told us we could (we live in NYC). We were called LIARS by an employee (Kevin was his name) who stated that we hit something. What's more likely after driving for a few minutes? That we hit something or that the tire was faulty? Why would we lie? We don't want to be spending a Saturday afternoon a national automotive repair chain. We were offered a new tire. Not a refund. That doesn't help. We already had to purchase a new tire and sure as hell weren't going back to PEP boys to get it. And sure as hell never will again! If you want to be insulted, go to PEP boys. PS. Pep Boys - Happened 10 minutes after I got the tire at a pep boys - Auto Repair Near Me - City, New York

I'm obstinate, when I go for service in the city I go to pepboys and every time I am dissatisfied... No matter what! I asked to redo my '02 suburban leaking brake lines and after waiting 2 hours (after telling them what I needed - I am a mechanical engineer, I know my way in a workshop) they told "Sorry we don't do that!"... Ok, they are not comfortable with braking systems, it's ok you need specialists to bend the brake lines into place, I get it... But then I bought 4 new tires for my Audi A4, asked for the full service (including alignment), something that is within the reach of what they advertise... Result: after waiting 4 hours, getting a disgusting car, missing one of the valve cap (that has later be found), now in order to drive straight I have to keep my steering wheel turned 10° to the left! So I will go to a competent shop where they do things right! The good thing is that now I have a full winter & summer sets of tires and I hope I will not have to go there again! read more

It's 1:56 PM. I came here for an oil change at 11:45AM. At that time they said "one hour". They didn't even TOUCH my car for over 90 minutes. Keep in mind I called ahead to make an appointment. I'd sworn off pep boys for car inspections after a location in queens tried to say I needed $800 worth of work just to pass..but, this one (38-19 21st st, lic) seemed ok when I bought a battery from them. So, I figured why not go to them again. BIG MISTAKE! this pb tried to say I needed $1,100 worth of work to pass inspection. FOUR THINGS on their long list I could do myself & did! Of the rest of the repairs, that were actually needed, a reputable shop did them for less than half of what they tried to gouge out of me! I am presently looking into how to make a formal complaint against pb, because it can't be coincidence that 2 different pb lied to me & tried to steal from me. so, this is a warning to you. & it matters not if you're a man or a woman. they gouged my boyfriend on some nonsense too some years back. read more

This place always takes care of me! I needed a warranty replacement tire and my tires had been discontinued. They searched and found one for me at another store and had it delivered asap. I have never had any complaints with the customer service here. Everyone is always friendly and helpful. The new store is very nice, however, they need to hire more service agents as the line was a little long , even having an appointment. Overall, this is my favorite pep boys. read more

This location is the best Pep Boys I have ever experienced. The reason being is on 2/25/15 I had my car service not realizing that the next day I was missing two hub caps. I called the next day to speak to a manager. I had the pleasure in speaking to Eric Sr. the service manager I had explained my situation and he was nice enough to tell me not to worry that he will take care of my missing hub caps. The five stars I am giving this location it's about the principal and Mr Eric went above and beyond and for that I give a 5 star. Also for the record the next day I sent a friend of mine for her car to be service and she also experience the excellent service. Eric should definitely be consider for a higher position. I dropped off my car today to get a synthetic oil change in the morning and given it is a 'wal-mart' of car service, I'm quite content with the service I've received. I did have to wait in line, but not extensively, which is what's great about this location. When I dropped it off, the staff that helped me didn't seem to be happy with her job. I ignored it and she basically took my keys and did her thing. I had to go to work, so I told her I'll pick it up later. As I was heading to work, I realized that I didn't receive a receipt or anything after handing my keys to her. I went back and asked if I could get a slip or a receipt or something and she printed out the receipt for me. With the same lifeless reaction, she did print it out and off I went to work. After work, I went back at around 6pm to pickup my car. I had a printed coupon which required a mail-in rebate so I showed the staff the coupon. She told me that I need to get a print out from another staff in the front, so I went to her and waited a bit. When it was my turn, the staff was a bit annoyed that service staff told me to go to her and in return, told me to go back to the service line. I went back and the manager (I didn't get his name) was trying to print out the rebate form. He couldn't seem to do it, but I patiently waited. In the end, he was trying to do the rebate submission for me online, which you can not do as my service receipt wasn't registered in the pepboys system yet. He printed out a blank form and asked me to try it later at home. At least, he was trying to help. I did see another customer who was complaining to the manager but he patiently handled the situation I believe. So in summary, I was pretty content with the service as my expectations are not as high when it comes to car servicing, especially from a car service-mart. I am still a fan because I believe this place has potential for a better service - some training/incentive for the manager and the staff who has to deal with many new yorkers that comes through the door. There is a lot of inefficiencies due to staff trying to figure out the correct procedure and the low morale, but I hope this will improve for the better next time I need servicing. read more
