I made the appointment online, and upon arrival at my appointment time I was told that they'd tried to contact me to reschedule because they only had one guy working. Then I found out that the a/c tech doesn't work Sundays (or Thursdays) which is not indicated on the website. So I wasted a half hour drive worth of time/gas for nothing. Decided to give it another shot. I had a day off yesterday (Friday July 20th). I made an appointment online for 10am and in the comments stated specifically I wanted the a/c tech to just do a diagnostic check. Didn't think it would take too terribly long for a check. I got to the same location on 96th St at 9:30am (a half hour before my scheduled appointment time). I was told this time that there will be a delay because the tech is finishing up with another car. I didn't mind a small delay as I was able to do some errands around the area. I was promised that I would be kept updated and informed of the status of the job. Well, I did all of my errands, even went and had a very long lunch. Finally at 2pm with no phone call, text message or email, went back to Pepboys to check on the status as I had completed all of my errands and then some. The guy leaning on the counter informed me that the tech was still working on the same car and had not even looked at or touched my car. I was not happy to say the least. Two appointments that I had scheduled and been on time for, just to ultimately have nothing done with my car. Best service today by Joe.!!! Made an appointment on-line for 10:00 and they started my car at 10:00 am. Had several things done, front brakes, rotors, oil changes, gasket leak, they found..!! Helping me out.!!! I mentioned to Joe how I have found a much cheaper price for repairs at Car X and he didn't hesitate to Price Match.!!! Pep Boys has a good selection but I've found that the numerous reviews are correct. Customer service is spotty at best. On my most recent trip I finally had to leave after getting passed over for assistance repeatedly. Had been a pretty loyal (registered) customer in two states. I made an appointment on line to have a tire checked for a nail. I get there and Dustin tells me it's going to be at least 45 minutes until they can look at it. I mention the appointment and he explains how just because I have an appointment doesn't mean I get to jump ahead of everyone else. Well.....what exactly does having an appointment mean, Dustin?? 2 hours later they were done plugging my tire. If you don't feel like getting "Dusted" by Dustin and crew(read the other reviews) go somewhere else. I'm open to suggestions. My husband did take my car there for 4 tires and again for brakes before he sent me in though. He said prices are fair, but enjoyed having Dustin's assistant take my Range Rover for a long joy ride both when he pulled it in and when he pulled it out of the service bay. My husband is a public speaker who needs examples of poor service for his talks. He thinks this Pep Boys is a goldmine of funny horror stories......but at least prices are fair. read more

I had my car towed to Pep Boys and they called the next day letting me know it needed the left tie rod replaced and quoted a price for the work. When I got there today to pick up my car they said the cost was $130.00 higher than the quoted cost. I let them know what the guy quoted, which apparently was incorrect. However, they ended up honoring the quoted cost. I've always been happy with the work, but really happy they believed me. I took my car there with front end issues. They "fixed" 1600 dollars worth of stuff none related to front end. I took the car back 2 day later and they found the issue I originally brought it in for. They told me that I would have to pay for the parts but they will install for free. I didn't ask for those parts to be replaced originally so why do I have to pay for the parts you should have repaired originally. They said that's all they could do. I called to speak to the manager and he said the same thing. I wrote a letter to the corporate office and received no reply. So a few days later my car broke down while I was on the road with my kids. My tie rod end (front end issue) broke. All I can say is never take your car to pep boys on 96th. They officially put me and my children at risk with terrible work ethic, customer service and lack of ability to be accountable. I had taken my car there before and had issue before this and thought I would give it another try. It's hard for me to express how I feel at the moment because I'm so upset. This is my wife's car and luckily I was driving and not here. Please stay away from this location. This shop does not care and their corporate office does not care. I work in customer service so I know when we make a mistake we make it right. Repeat business is always the goal. At pep boys it seems that misleading their customers are theirs. DO NOT GO HERE! my car was having break problems so Tiple A towed my car here Saturday night. my car and everything was their and ready for them in the morning. i called them sunday morning to make sure it was in and they told me it was. it wasn't until 2 that i was told it was being worked on. THEN as they were putting it together monday they noticed a part was bent and didn't "notice it when they took it apart". It is now tuesday and i am still without a car. all that needed to be fixed was my front breaks and my right caliber. $902 just to fix all of it but for the inconvenience they said they'd give me a 15% discount. 12/20/2011 UPDATE: Pep Boys reviewed the invoice and agreed there was an overcharge on labor. Resolution was reduction in bill by $160 which was a fair price. No complaints with the work and kudos for reaching out to address price problem. But I wish I didn't have to scream from the rafters to get it squared away ============================================================== Had my '92 S10 pickup towed there after breakdown nearby. All it needed was a "tuneup" which was diagnosed after a $90 "diagnostic evaluation". So the tune up meant replacing spark plus & wires ($32 parts + $170 labor) and the distributor cap ($23 parts + $110 labor) and the ignition coil ($23 parts + $100 labor). And then $56 for a warranty on their work (!) which you can't avoid. . So unless you're in the market to spend $500 for a standard tune0-up, LOOK ELSEWHERE. read more

I have been taking all of my vehicles to these guys for years -- including both Corvettes (a 1996 and 2009). Jerry is the master mechanic and has always done an excellent job, and the one time they messed up (replaced an intake manifold gasket on my 1996 Corvette, it started leaking again) they apologized and repaired it for free even though the labor warranty expired. Joe is the manager I always deal with and he is great to work with. They even refused to fix my air conditioning once (~$1000 repair) because they knew the factory warranty had been extended and they told me to take it to the dealer, who fixed it at no charge. Had they fixed it and charged me I would have never known that the dealer would do it for free. read more

He knew I was waiting for him. He kept waiting on any other customers that walked in. He then took a pizza delivery for the shop, all the while glancing at me. Then just disappeared in the back. I suppose to eat a piece of the pizza. The first guy came back over and asked if Jeff had assisted me yet. I replied that he hadn't. He went in the back to get him again for me. Then why allow people to schedule appointments online if you don't schedule the staff for it. The guy that greeted me at the service desk at 8 am had all of the personality of a blister after a 10-mile hike. I came in for 4 new tires that I had pre-purchased online. When I arrived I asked if I'd be able to have them installed in 2 hours. His response was maybe! So I said "30 minutes a tire? Really?!" He looked up unphased and explained that it was 20 minutes a tire, if they don't run into problems. Then he said "if I have the tires in stock"! My response was they had been pre-purchased and he quickly pointed out that I hadn't been charged so they might not have them. That gives you a nice warm feeling, right?! While he was in back checking the mechanic that was actually going to do the job came up and was as friendly and nice as could be. He said he'd do his best to get me out of there. Much to my surprise, he was done shortly after 9am! The mechanic exceeded my expectation at every turn. Meanwhile, the bearded counter troll should be banished to warehouse work where no living human customer has to interact with him. He is poison! So my experience was that I experienced excellent service, but a real jerk greets you and generally makes you have a bad experience from the start. Pep Boys need to let the service counter guy go and hire some people that care about people to work the counter. It's a real shame that he's the outward face of what seems to be a reputable organization. read more

Do not go here!!! My car didn't start, I got the battery replaced. 1. They do not care about online APPT TIMES. They neglected to look at my entire online ticket and told me never use the online appt feature again. 2. OVERPRICED LIARS: 300 bucks for battery replacement service and repair (even for a Fiat...) no!!!! Tried to throw on an extra 90 bucks in engine diagnostics that was never done, but then they called it procedure, and then changed their mind and said it was the "first draft" of the bill even tho I was just asked to pay for it. 50 random bucks was put towards electrical diagnosis. Asked why my 25 bucks hadn't come off for towing. They said "it will come off when you get to the register while I was standing at the register. 3. SLOW SERVICE and TOWing: Took 2 hrs for the tow truck to get to my car that was 1.5 miles away. They said might not be able to look at sane day despite same day guarantee. 4. SEXIST and RUDE: When I walked up to the counter they looked right past me and my boyfriend behind me and said, "sir what can I help you with today." I spent the rest of the conversation fighting for them to listen to me and trying to ignore the fact that they were being total assholes. I did not hear an ounce of customer service. To top it off they will blatantly lie to you hoping you're not just a busy ex mechanic or ten plus years, hoping you won't grasp what they say. I gave them the make, model and year over the phone prior to coming in and made an appointment. I was told it would also take one hour; 90 min tops. I had my wife's van towed to pep boys because we got a flat on the highway. By the time the tow truck dropped the car off it was late on a Sunday and the store was closed . I had to go out of town the next day on business so my father in law and my wife went back to the store Monday they told my wife the van needed 4 new tires. My wife told them that we only wanted the one tire they told us that we needed at least two my wife again told them again that we only wanted the one. At this time my father in law became suspicious and ask to see the tire so that he could determine if it needed to be replaced or could it be repaired.My father in law then offered to pay in advance for two tires Dustin told him that they could not take an advance payment. (Who turns down an advanced payment) Dustin then told them that the cost for the one tire would be $108 and the car would be ready later that afternoon. The afternoon came and went and Dustin nor anyone else called! When my wife called them the next afternoon they told her that the car was ready and the cost was $214 because they put on two tires! I have used pep boys several times before and have been a satisfied customer, but I will never never use them again! read more

I must say this particular service center lacks the basic ability to complete an oil change without issue. I could almost overlook putting conventional oil in a vehicle that is running full synthetic. However, not remembering to replace the oil cap and causing damage is a problem. Moreover, when trying to find an amicable solution with said service center, I am met with an attitude, no one even acknowledging any of my concerns. Chuck the service manager was like have it towed and we'll clean it up and look at it. Well Chuck I am in the exact same industry you are in and cleaning the engine is not going to rebuild it. You should have slowed down long enough to listen to me and not shuffle me off to the tow center so you could finish your coffee. I do not want to speak for the masses however in my case even with the costly foul up I think I wouldn't have been even remotely this frustrated if he would have acknowledged my concerns and listened to me. I could have save him a lot of time and frustration if he would have not thought he was the smartest one on the phone. Frankly I have been how one mans mistakes impacts not only the customers life but the dealer/service center, the community and our industry. We are in a customer service based industry ... so the customer is # 1 over everything. Without the customers we do not have jobs to goto. So Chuck I suggest you and your store 96th street pep boys learn and remember this important fact. The customer is the entire reason we do what we do. I've been to this store 3 times in the past week. Appt #1 was made online but no record of it on their schedule when I got there. I waited 2 hours for an oil change. I needed tires mounted but discovered rim needed replaced first. So I ordered a rim. I prepared for the tire mount. Appt #2 also made online and no record of it on their schedule...and nobody available to do a tire mount at 5pm on a Monday! Appt #3 was made IN STORE but, you guessed it, no record of it on their schedule AGAIN. During the estimate they tried to charge me for the tire mount, but I showed my receipt from the week prior and the charge was removed. Then I proceeded to wait 3.5 hours for the tire mount! When I checked out they tried to charge me AGAIN until I showed my receipt! I'll never go back to this store again or maybe even a Pep Boys in general. read more

They then said they it would be ready to on the car by 11 and they would call. When 11:15 rolled around, I was told "oh I think it's done". I took my car there. Then I was told it would be a short wait. Almost 1.5 hours later, I walked up to the desk. The girl picked up my key. WHAT? Wait my car was done, you saw me sitting there for and did not tell me? On February 7th, 2019, my husband brought in our car (2001 Volvo V70) to this location to have the oil changed. We thought all had gone well after the oil change was done, as the car was running just like it was before. On February 18th, 2019, my husband was driving to come get me from work when the car started randomly shutting down and was sounding like a rod had been bent due to knocking noises while driving. He was able to limp the car to this location after their mechanic had already gone home for the night. On February 19th, 2019, we were contacted and informed that the motor had seized up and would need to be fully replaced due to the amount of damage done to the motor. When we asked them what happened to cause this to suddenly happen like it did, we were told over the phone that the person who had done the oil change had just dumped new oil in and did not do a proper oil change on the car, causing the eventual seize of the motor. When my husband pointed out to them that they were the ones to do the oil change only 12 days earlier, their tone changed and they said that they would try to do a head change to see if that would fix the issue. The afternoon of the 19th, we were told the head change would not work and they were going to try to find a new (to us) motor to replace the seized motor. My husband was told to call back the following afternoon around 3pm for updates. On February 20th, 2019, my husband called again and was told that the person looking for the part couldn't make it to work, so no progress had been made. On February 21st, 2019, they had informed us that they had found a motor but it was the wrong type (ours doesn't have Turbo, the motor they found did have Turbo), so it couldn't be put in our car. Finally, on February 22nd, 2019, we received the final call that let us know that the new motor would be $2000 with an additional $2000 in labor costs. When we pointed out that they had admitted fault, they got defensive and said that there was no proof that the oil change had caused the motor to seize up, despite admitting that previously. Their only accommodation they would make would be knocking off $1000 off of the labor costs. We ended up having the car towed home, at our expense, and do not recommend this location to anyone at any cost. Our car was running fine prior to the oil change, and now we will probably not be able to salvage the car. read more

The online app't time thing is kinda like call-ahead seating at a restaurant, you just get moved to the front of whatever line is there at the time you happen to show up. They don't anticipate you showing up at that time and make no provisions for that. So be first in line in the morning or go somewhere else. We'll not even mention the poor handling of things at the service counter. Just avoid this place altogether for service. read more

I had previously taken my car to another location where the bill was going to be upwards of $500. These guys looked at my car, found the real problem, and helped me get it figured out for free! I was so impressed with their service, I would recommend them to anyone I know. Took my car here for new rims and tires. Had a manager by the name of Steve handling it. Picked out tires and rims and paid for them in advance because the rims were a custom order and needed to be paid up front. No problem. Spent 1700.00 for rims and tires. Came back 3 days later after receiving call saying the rims were delivered and ready to be put on. I had to leave town but instructed my boyfriend to take the car when Steve called to pep boys to have everything put on. Come back from out of town and THESE WERENT THE RIMS I BOUGHT!!!!!!!!! These were $89.00 rims and I was charged $179.00 per RIM! I go get new rims put on and go back to Pep Boys to return the Rims and spend well over an hour waiting to get my money back and finally after Pep Boys putting the wrong rims on my car!! Whats the matter Steve mad because you got caught stealing money from me!! Yeah thats right he spent an hour trying to refund my money because the order wasnt in the computer!!! What??? Thats funny? Gimme my money for the rims and the labor you charge me too. Oh yeah I just spent $2 200.00 somewhere else and you lost a customer. Nice job Steve! You are a thief and an ass-----!
