Tried to charge me $568 for labor because and I quote "they have to remove the intake manifold to get to my thermostat" I took it to auto zone down the street got the parts for which they were charging $80.98, got it for $25 along with some sodas, took the intake manifold off in less than 5 minutes since it's two screws then took the thermostat out myself. Only took 35 minutes, and they charged me over $400 for labor. Hence $400 an hour for them to do the bare minimum. I hope you guys read the reviews and see that a woman with bare minimum car knowledge can do your job better. Picked up wife's car tonight. We had them swap tires on her wheels. Quoted us $25 / corner when I called. A little expensive, but okay. They charged her an extra $60 for "TPMS check and reset." I've mounted tires myself on her car before (our shop was closed today; so, we took it to Pep Boys). There is no reset procedure. You just drive the car. Called and told us it needed an alignment. It needs tie rods, the alignment would be inconsistent unless repaired first. They called and told us it needed new rear brakes and that it is metal on metal. Rear brake pads have 4mm left on them. I moonlight as a service writer in Santa Clarita some times, but we never try to jack up the bill like this. $167.92 to mount four tires -- should cost $80 max. Buyer beware. read more

After 2 weeks, engine light was on again and so took it back. They called her back and said it's good to go. After a few days, light went on again. The temperature gauge is reading high and the check engine light keeps turning on and off. This time they charged her $35.00 but it's still not fixed. As a mom who is a few hours away, I feel helpless with these people that try to take advantage of a poor student. I have ordered some parts and have been pleased with their products and promptness. Good selection of items to keep your car clean, both inside and out. I wish they had a better selection of tools. Service: oil change Called beforehand to get a quote and ask how long for a walk-in (no appointment). $80 for synthetic oil. Told me there was a $20 off promo (it turned out to be a 20% off coupon, so a couple points off there - but you can look up the deals/coupons online before committing to going to a Pep Boys). Said it could take about 60-80 minutes since they're a bit busy right now. Indeed, it took 50 minutes until they took my car in. And another 30 minutes to change the oil. Could've gone elsewhere and gotten it done for $70 and in 30 minutes. They apparently rotated my tires too (according to the invoice I received afterwards), but I was sitting there the whole 30 minutes of service and even though I wasn't staring at my car the whole time, I think I would've noticed if the tires ever got rotated. All I saw was the mechanic spin my wheels to check the tread and whatever else of my tires; but I don't think they were actually moved from the front to the rear or anything. They didn't charge extra for tire rotation or anything, but I don't like seeing that I received a service that I don't think I actually received. I do like detailed reports after inspection, and Pep Boys have that going for them (fairly standard, but still). read more

I hadn't been to this Pep Boys before, but the ones in Burbank and Glendale have always been great, so I expected the same from Pasadena. Not so. Took almost 3 hours, and they didn't seem that busy. Wouldn't have been a big deal, except the waiting area was closed due to COVID. The real issue, tho, was after I left. I had asked them to look at the spare tire, since it had a puncture in the tread. They called to say they couldn't repair it - then tried to up-sell me 5 new tires, plus almost $1000 in additional repairs, including the brakes that I just recently had my brake guy look at. All I wanted was an oil change. When I picked up the car, the total for the oil change was high and when I checked the receipt, they had charged me to repair the tire they didn't repair. I'm not even sure they looked at it, since the tire wasn't even removed from the back of the CRV. Not going to return to this location. I'll drive to the one in Glendale, an extra 10 miles out of my way to avoid this one. read more

I have been going to Pep Boys for an oil change for the past 10 plus years. This is very hard to write but what happened to Pep Boys Service?? Over SIX hours to get my oil changed?!!!! So Angry! I made an appointment for 5pm online. An email confirmation was received for 5pm. It stated that the store will contact me to confirm the appointment as well. Service manager called me to say he's backed up due to the holidays and I need to come ASAP (11am) for an oil change. Earliest I can arrive is 4pm. He said I must arrive by 3pm or else he's going to turn me away WITH AN APPOINTMENT! He said there's lots of appointments that day as well. I asked if I can be reschedule for the next day and he said, it will still be the same wait time whether you come in or not. Basically no. Arrived at 2:45pm so they took my car into service. Said it will be ready by 7. Why can't I keep my original appointment? Said there's only 2 service tech past 4pm? Store closes at 8pm. Long story short, my car wasn't ready until 8:40pm!!! This doesn't even deserve a star but the service guys were working hard because they knew I was there all day! The service manager was completely rude and argumentative. Whatever happened to the old service manager Chris? Why can't I show up at 5pm like my appointment? Honda Pasadena has the same oil change service for the same price. $60 for synthetic oil change. This morning I walk out to my car and find some pretty substantial scratches ok the front driver side fender, along with additional evidence (smudged hand prints) that they didn't cover the fender before working on it. This place is trash. I went to take my car for an oil change. Typically 1-2 hour job depending on the day. They told me 2-3 I accepted because it was my only day off and I had some errands to do in Pasadena (which was difficult to do without a car) Anyway, 20 mins away from being 3 hours, I gave them a call and they told me it would be another 1.5 hours... for an oil change. I told them I was walking over to get my car because it was too long for an oil change. I was on my way and they gave me a call saying they were taking the car in and it would take them 20 minutes... if I knew I had to basically take my business away I would have done it earlier to get my car back. Over 3 hours late I get my car and it's DIRTY. They ruined my carpet by not putting a sheet before stepping into my car and left my steering feeling filthy. I cleaned my steering wheel up and it's was disgusting and black... My Hyundai Santa Fe began shutting down this past Sunday (9/23/2018) so I took it to this Pep Boys which is located nearby from home. They called me back the next day on Monday to provide me with the details of my diagnostic test. The diagnostic found that my car should have the solenoids, cam shafts sensors, and spark plugs replaced to eliminate the car from shutting off automatically; and also found that an axle should be replaced, along with an air filter, too. The diagnostic also suggested a fuel system cleaner too. The breakdown in costs were $1,131.66 in parts, $1,531.87 in labor, and other expenses at $187.70. Totaling to $2,976.58 with taxes. I found the prices for the parts to be excessive considering that I briefly looked up the parts needed to replace the solenoids, spark plugs, cam shafts sensors, and cam shaft cables for $471.07. A $660.59 difference in costs. (Didn't include the air filter and axle in my assessment because I have extras at home and I had the axle replaced at a dealership a couple years ago and its under a lifetime warranty). I ended up paying for the diagnostic ($89.99) and drove home to do additional research on the parts and labor costs since they weren't too concerned with looking for cheaper alternatives. This following event is what prompted the 1-Star Review: I went down to the garage to check my vehicle liter size for checking part sizes online. I opened the hood and my engine bay cover was MISSING. I quickly walked back to Pep Boys right before closing and asked if they had my engine bay cover, the attendant went back and grabbed it at a mechanic work station and offered to install it back on my car. If I hadn't went down to check my engine bay cover would have likely been tossed, and luckily I don't live too far away to go fetch it. Rather than be inconvenienced again I just took it with me home and handled the problem myself. They were kind enough to wrap it in cellophane, though. Pic included. I took it in 10/22 in the afternoon before I left we had agreed that it would also need a battery replacement, fine and was told to not reschedule because the "only personal working the next day were trainees and it's not recommended" I got a call a little before the agreed pick up time and was asked if I can leave it for an additional day which I agreed no hesitation, I know how it works with working with cars. Next day I go pick up my car they handed me my keys for me to find out another notification for a malfunctioning signal light! No one told me!! The guy never mentioned a thing!!!!!! I quickly go back in and the worker said oh yeah we tried to fix it but somehow they couldn't!?????????? Did not offer a solution only suggestion was for me to buy another light when they messed it up in the first place. Told me to take it up with MIKE. Wow! Pep Boys really DOES have my back! Today around 5:00pm, I was driving my car when it started making REALLY awful noises from the engine area. I immediately knew that something needed to be done ASAP and called for a tow truck. While waiting for the tow, I called Pep Boys in Pasadena and described the noise and situation to Matt, who assured me that they could look at the car right away. After towing the car to Pep Boys, I was met -- sure enough -- right away by Matt and David, the mechanic who assessed the situation!! A new belt and tensioner did the trick. The team picked up the parts swiftly (I can't recall the gentleman's name who drove, however, thank you!) and installed everything in time for me to make it home for bed! Edgar made certain that everything was in order and kept me updated every step of the way, and Aaron also provided excellent customer service. David provided a detailed report describing how he fixed my car and his recommendations for future items I should be aware of to keep my car in tip-top shape! I'm extremely impressed by the entire team's effort to get my car fixed. I was in a jam, it was late, and Pep Boys Pasadena really came through. I can't thank them enough! I wouldn't give this place one star if I could help it. Went there today for an oil change, tire rotation (free), and for air to be put in my tires (free). My car sits for long periods of time, and my low tire pressure indicator was visible. Worked with the manager, Pedro. He tried to up sale me on two new tires and alignment. I must have asked Pedro five times if air was put in the tires. Each time he assured me that it was. On top of this, I was told to bring my car back for an oil change after 41K miles - no exaggeration. While I'm driving home, I noticed the low tire pressure indicator was still visible. I called Pedro back and he assured me that air was put in the tires and that something must be wrong with the sensor. I called Crown City Tire & Auto Repair and asked if it could put some air in my tires. He, Leo, said, come on in! I went. Leo had air put in my tires and had them checked for nails. I was out of there in a flash. And, when I drove home, the indicator was no longer visible. Crown City just found a new customer! I will never go back to Pep Boys. Ever. read more

Made a reservation for 11:00am Saturday for an oil change knowing full well how busy Saturdays can be. Arrived at 10;50am to find a line of maybe 6 people waiting for service from one(extremely surly) service advisor. Twenty minutes later, finally my turn! Ok, no problem, an oil change takes about twenty - thirty minutes tops right? Had no ride, so I just expected to wait... I had a reservation! Well, yeah, but Mr. Surly Service Guy barks " Hmph... hope you have about two-and-a-half, three hours, cuz we're backed up". But I had a reservation! For just an oli change! Tough. Not even an apology. Walked out. Look, I'll show some respect for your business when you show some respect for this customer's time. Why am I penalized for having the foresight to make a reservation? What is the point of a reservation if I'm just put in a que with all the walk-ins?? Why not a dedicated oil change bay and technician to get people like me in and out quickly??? Nope, that would be too efficient I guess, and well, respectful. I've taken my vehicles a number of times to this Pep Boys, primarily for oil change and some minor tune-ups. The service has been friendly but I've always just dropped off my vehicles. It does take a while when you drop off your vehicle, especially with no appointment, but there's plenty of things to do while you wait. The prices have been good for the service conducted. read more
