Ive always had mixed feelings about food trucks in and around dc for various reasons. Overall I can say I really enjoy what Pepe has to offer. Although I haven't gotten around to trying the famous $20 sandwich, all of the items that I have tried have all been stellar (I'm a huge fan of the chicken club). I didn't feel that the wait was long at all, especially considering the amount of care that was put into the preparation. For food on the go, the presentation has also been wonderful. Not only was my sandwich delicious, it was pretty pleasing to the eye. Great colour, great texture and flavor. The perfect size for the price and the customer service was excellent. The staff is super friendly. Oh and the ice cream sandwich. Delish! read more

Went here for lunch on a Friday and I'll tell you what man, the bocata was delicious (Bocata is Espanol for sandwich). It was breaded chicken with this money sauce. Damn fine bocata if you ask me. read more

Sorry - this is why I avoid food trucks. I was lured in by the José Andrés name and the yelp reviews. Way over-priced for what you get and the wait was soooooo long, even though there weren't many customers. Ordered the butifarra burger. I don't mind greasy food but this sandwich wasted the fatty flavors and just tasted like a decent sausage sandwich. In fact I would prefer almost any grilled sausage sandwich to this one, and wouldn't need to feel guilty about spending so much on my lunch. The sauce was good but couldn't save the dish. I ordered the Pollo Frito and while everything about it was adequate it wasn't what I had expected from a Jose Andres food truck with an $11 price point. I was underwhelmed and disappointed and will likely not order here again given the many creative and less expensive food truck options that exist out there. read more

Had the tuna sandwich, the hardboiled egg was a nice touch but it was a little heavy on the mayo. I really enjoyed the small baguette that it came on it was crispy and delicious. The gazpacho was very good but extremely rich and he large was more than enough to share between 2 people. I wish they had had the veggie sandwich but it was not on the menu the day that I went. Yummy sandwich options at Jose Andres' food truck Pepe. I myself tried the fried chicken sandwich which had a nice spicy almost marinara-like sauce on it. This food truck is pretty awesome. But is that surprising? Everything Jose Andres does is pretty awesome. I prefer the pollo Fritos. This chicken sandwich is filling for lunch, the chicken is fresh and tasty, and whatever sauce is on it -- so good! My only compliant is 1.) it's kind of expensive for what you get and 2.) sometimes it takes 15-20 to get your sandwich. I'm on a quick lunch break -- I can't just wait around that long. After I paid $10 for the Pollo Frito sandwich, they called out my name and handed me what looked like a breadstick. This might be the smallest sandwich I have ever seen. I immediately thought, "What a ripoff, I will never come back here!" This was before I tasted the sandwich however. I took one bite and forgot I was standing in the middle of a crosswalk as closed my eyes to savor one of the tastiest sandwiches I've had in DC. Everything about the sandwich was amazing...the crisp yet soft bread, the perfectly cooked fried chicken and the brava sauce, oh my god the brava sauce (I don't even know what brava sauce is but its delicious). We just had this truck come to our office, it was solid. The serrano ham and cheese was delicious, the flan was very respectable. This would have been about a $20 meal but i didn't have to pay for it - schwing. Though I'l admit I'm considering what to eat for the "rest" of my lunch, if you need a sense of serving sizes. Despite being incredibly overpriced, and overrated, this is still one of the better food-trucks in DC. Pepe does gourmet sandwiches and an occasional Spanish extra sides. My experience included the FC Barcelona sandwich; chicken, lettuce, tomato, special mayonaise. It was good, not amazing, and for the price not enough to fill. The chicken is ok, the tomato/lettuce quality was what you'll find in any food truck, watery and tasteless. The shallot mayo was very good, and the bread was also very good, my only problem is felt like day-old bread; crispy on the outside from the toasting--- but still tough on the inside. I read on Yelp that the sandwiches are small - they're great snack size. I bought two for lunch the other being the Jamon. It was overall good. I think it would make an ideal snack, or type of food to eat on the go in the mornings. Pepe is a novel experience, but I'll have to invoke a comparison, Rolling Ficelle is the far better food truck. The sandwiches feature ingredients of equal or higher quality, the ficelle bread is fresher, the sandwiches are larger, and the prices are far more reasonable. I'd go back to this place for the Jamon sandwich when I'm feeling lightly-hungry and craving good crude ham, or to experience the novelty of a 20$ sandwich. read more

Slightly Pricy Sandwiches and Soup, but very, very amazing! 4.5 stars. Gotta say, this was one of those, "looks interesting, let's try it" food trucks. I gave the pollo frito ($10.00 fried chicken) sandwich a go and the gent inside was kind enough to give me a sample of their gazpacho ($8.00) that simply blew my mind (I definitely kirbied it down). Their sandwiches are very similar to Banh Mi (Vietamese sandwiches) though with a goodly amount of garlic in both the bread and different sauces. They've tenderized the chicken breasts prior to breading them. They used a larger set of bread crumbs for the breading (would've preferred something more akin to glaze rather than a heavy batter for the frying or grilling). The different sauces really come through quite well. I'd have liked to have had a little more lettuce, some tomatoes and maybe some sweet onions to complement the different sauces. The peppers came through as an interesting tangential thought/aftertaste that was very pleasant. Like Banh Mi, the bread is one of the stronger components of this sandwich and it stands out quite nicely with both a garlic and buttery taste to the crunchiness. Other folks could definitely tell that I had something with garlic in it, and again, I have to stress while there was a bit of garlic to the overall flavor it did not in any way over power the rest of the different tastes within this sandwich. One other comment about this sandwich is that it is not a "heavy" sandwich, but one that is fairly filling while leaving you with enough room for something else to go with it. I also did not find this sandwich to be over oily as others have posted. It was what I was expecting as having just a little bit of olive oil within one of the two sauces that is within this particular sandwich. These are long, thin sandwiches, and can inflict a little of their presence on your clothing if you're not careful. Wonderful, fresh ingredients, though I'll probably try one of the other sandwiches the next time. Their gazpacho is very different than what I've experienced prior. I'm more used to a translucent tomato base broth with chunks of different vegetables (tomatoes, different onions, different peppers, potatoes, olives, etc. , ...). I've not ever had one of the puree styles with cream added, and this one is definitely a puree style version of the dish... However, where this one really sings is that instead of using cream which can readily over-power the distinct tastes of the other vegetables within this dish, this one used bread in order to thicken up this amazing, cold soup. It was definitely possible to taste the tomatoes, onions, garlic, potatoes (very few) and different peppers (I'm definitely missing quite a few things that were present and I apologize to the chef and to all others who read this review for not being able to relate the full list). Where the sandwiches are very good, this soup will definitely have me coming back again and again when and if they show up near my workplace. This truck is definitely geared up for Summer, as their gazpacho was both cooling and filling at the same time. Would love to see this truck start offering flan, though the ice cream sandwich looked really tasty, too! read more

Eh. I had the pulled pork sandwich. The meat was tender with great flavor, and the slaw was fine, but the bread was mushy (and I ate the sandwich right outside of the truck). I could see it being a great sandwich with bread that holds up to the meat better. Others have commented on serving size. I thought the portions were fine. Really good stuff, but there is a problem: The super-thin bread can't hold meat and the sauces. The only way to eat these items is to lean over a sink and do your best to avoid the copious amounts of falling goop. (It may be tasty but you don't want to be wearing it from head to toe.) The problem, of course, is that if you are buying lunch from a food truck, you don't have a sink ... or even a plate. To exacerbate this problem, they only offer tiny insubstantial cocktail napkins! As with many food trucks that sell a limited number of items and are staring at lines of customers waiting to order, I don't see why the cooks can't anticipate and get things cooking in a process. Waiting over 10 minutes after ordering is too long. Those issues aside, the food it top rate -- the best I have had from a food truck. I buy uncured iberico pork myself and I more than fully appreciate why a sandwich of it costs $20. This is the best pork in the world. Period. Full stop. Until recently, it was never available in the US. Indeed, the uncured iberico is rarely available in Spain. Some friends in Spain -- true gourmands -- have only had it a few times. read more

I had the pulled pork and it was delicious. Very meaty and filling. The bread was perfectly toasted and the slaw inside was pretty good as well. The staff was also nice and friendly. I took away a star because of the cost. $11 for a sandwich is a bit steep, especially because there are other places in the area for cheaper sandwiches. So I have now been to 52 food trucks, I guess I am a fan of the movement. I was lucky enough to hit up Pepe on opening day as they were two blocks from my office. I am a fan of Jose Andreas, and excited about the menu. I was not wild about the pricing, but in my quest to hit every food truck possible, I had no choice. I was about 12th in line, I got there early, and service was understandably slow as it was their first day. I think they did a good job overall and will work out the kinks. I ordered the Pollo Frito as I did not want to pay $20 for a sandwich. In true Jose Andreas style, this would qualify as a small plate. I'll get to flavors first. The sandwich itself was really good, fresh ingredients and very tasty, the brava sauce and aoli mesh perfectly together, the bread was nice and crunchy, and soft on the inside and a fine place for the sandwich to lay. But, and this is a big BUT. It was tiny, if I spend $10 on a sandwich it had better fill me up. No chips or pickle included, just a ficelle bread about 1.5" wide, and 4" long. For a food truck this is ballsy, I see people trying it out, and being off put by the size of food and not coming back. I will not revisit unless i know for $10 I don't have to find more lunch elsewhere. So that is the two stars. If portions were even a little bigger, I would give it 3 stars, if it was enough to satisfy my lunchtime hunger 4 stars. Until then, try it once to say you have, then decide for yourself. Again, I am a big and long time of his work, but the pricing model of this has turned me off. read more

I usually love this food truck but today i tried the best seller pollo frito (fried chicken) which was quite bad. The chicken was very dry and not tender but rather crispy like it wasn't fresh. The bread and sauce were very good however and made the sandwich edible. Disappointed as I love the other sandwiches but maybe this was just a fluke. read more

Pepe is the hottest new food truck, featuring Spanish inspired sandwiches from José Andrés. I've been there three times now, and each time was great. The first thing I had there was the Butifarra burger, which consisted of aioli, pork sausage, and brava sauce. The sausage patty was great with a good spiciness to it, and the sauce was so amazing I wanted to lick the wrapper. The Pepito de Ibérico was quite good. For $20, you get Ibérico pork and Serrano ham, with roasted green peppers and aioli. I said it was good, but at that price, I want my food to be heavenly, and the Pepito de Ibérico was not. It was too salty, and the sauce overwhelmed the flavor of the meat. The Pepito de Ternera was my favorite so far. It's a seared beef tenderloin sandwich with piquillo pepper confit and blue cheese. The tenderloin has a strong enough flavor to balance the sauce, and is exquisitely tender. I'll definitely be back, but I'll probably not bother with the $20 sandwich again. read more

I've only been once but my Futbol Club Barcelona was out of sight delicious. Exactly the right amount of every topping. Sometimes it's irritating to write such a positive review but I'm glad to say this place is a 5 star all the way. There was no component of the sandwich where I could offer suggestions for improvement. Pepe gave me a familiar sandwich and made it into something really special. Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest! Thanks for getting the food truck concept right! Some complain about the price, but my sandwich was $9 and I would gladly spend it again. Yes, $20 is too much to spend on a sandwich. So to those who complain, I ask, "Why did you spend $20 on a sandwich from a FOOD TRUCK??" Also, iberico ham is greasy as hell--it's an unusually fatty, salt cured ham. If you don't like grease, probably stay away from the cured hams. The food is 5 stars, the price knocks it down a star. A little more than I'd like to spend for lunch (~$15-16 total). I always get the pollo frito, patatas bravas, and either a soda or the hot cider if its cold out. Really really delicious.
