What a gem in downtown Hartford! We had a fantastic meal here and I will absolutely be keeping this spot in mind for dinner before or after a show at The Bushnell. We visited the day after Valentine's Day, so we were able to take part in their crab and burrata salad, as well as their fig and ricotta special appetizer of the day. We were so impressed at how tender the veal ossobucco was, and the ravioli I had were so unique in an orange citrusy sauce. Our homemade biscotti even came with chocolate truffles made in house! Our server was very professional and attentive, and the restaurant was so beautifully decorated. Since this was my first time, I'm not sure if it was decorated just for Valentine's Day, but it definitely was a nice vibe for our date night!

The Caesar salad was a complete disappointment. I cannot believe this was $13. It was barely a cup. No shaved Parmesan, no anchovies, barely enough dressing. Not fresh at all. I feel this restaurant used to be wonderful back in the day, but completely overpriced with tiny portions.

Oh my, I usually try to give a decent rating when there is some redeeming quality about the place. Must say that the atmosphere when you walk in was fine. We had reservations and showed up about 10 minutes before our time. Got to our seats and started looking through the menus. The waitress came over and asked were we ready to place a drink water. I said give us a few minutes. About 20 minutes before she returned to take our drink orders. She brought the drinks, left the table, and she was gone for about 10 minutes before I realized that she was not bringing straws for the drinks. So I went to the bar to ask for straws. Ordered appetizers and before they were delivered she brought bread for the table. I do not remember ever being given cold bread with olive oil; I mean refrigerator cold bread. Be that as it may, we were hungry so we ate. The waitress showed up another 20 minutes later. We decided to place dinner orders knowing that it would take another half hour before she returned. I ordered the shrimp dinner, my wife ordered the lobster and shrimp ravioli. Ravioli was cold with what seem to be a hefty serving of perhaps mushrooms and very light on the shrimp or lobster. My meal was actually decent however with the lack of presence of the waitress and the straw catastrophe and cold bread I would likely never go back despite a decent meal. I do not remember ever having service this horrible. We always give at least a 20% tip. I can only remember one other time we've given a 10% tip in the last two years. This place only got 10%.

Peppercorns has been around for a long time, and it is for good reason; they are pretty consistent in providing a great dining experience. We were going to a show, and decided to dine inside a restaurant for the first time in a long time. We shared and eggplant appetizer. It was delicious. Thinly sliced eggplant slices with freshly made tomato sauce. They also bring fresh Italian bread with olive oil. My wife had a salad as an entree. They have a large selection of salads - more than the two or three you usually see. I had the ossobuco. They really do this and other Italian specialties nicely. The meat falls of the bone. It was served with mashed potatoes and a medley of fresh veggies. Note: They're busy before the shows. If you want a long leisurely dinner with dessert leave yourself a couple of hours. They do a good job getting you out - but the timing may not be perfect. (We didn't want dessert, but we probably didn't have time if we did - and we arrived at 6 or 6:15. ) If you're going to the Bushnell, they give you a discount, but you have to ask.

My fianceé bought the Entertainment Book again this year so we're determined to use it! Oh wait, it's still December. So we're still using 2018's Entertainment Book! Lol. I'm so behind on reviews and it's already January... Anyway! So we were hanging out in downtown Hartford doing some restaurant and happy hour hopping so we chose this place to start for lunch! Atmosphere/Appearance: Very classic and modern feel inside. There's a touch of elegance, but you wouldn't feel out of place dining here in a t-shirt and jeans among the suits in here on their liquid lunches... Shh... The great big windows illuminate the entire restaurant even on rainy days like today. The decor is plentiful and done in good taste. Service: Very good. I have no complaints whatsoever. Food: We both started with the Black Fig Cosmo which we liked. It was a very different taste, but it was a good kind of different. It's hard to explain, but I think you should try it. Next up was an order of the shrimp cocktail. Nothing to write home about, but the shrimp were good. The cocktail sauce was a bit "ketchup-y" and could've used some more spice. For my entree I went out on a limb and tried the Insalata D'Aragosta which is basically a lobster salad. Now, I KNEW, just KNEW it was going to be some skimpy lil' lobster claw on a bed of lettuce. Nope. Wrong. It was pulled apart Maine lobster meat with arugula and radicchio in a lemon aioli with extra virgin olive oil then garnished with a plum tomato and roasted corn relish. It was delicious. It was a small handful of meat and was honestly a great amount of food for a lunch portion. Value: Not bad. Lunch time meals are usually a bit cheaper due to the smaller portions, but this place won't break the bank, but it isn't a local diner either. The Black Fig Cosmo was $11.00. The shrimp cocktail were $2.00 each and my lobster salad was only $21.00. Not bad at all. This place was pretty good! I'm glad that we came with the Entertainment Book coupon. Would I come back here without it? Eh, maybe... but we do have the book for 2019 so we'll likely be back! Lol.

Counter weight IPA is a must try!

Well, that's the checklist for the standout lunch experience we had at Portobello yesterday. The European street scene dining room is very pretty, with two huge Italian landscape paintings on the brick walls, lantern lights, a wide plank hardwood floor, dark furniture and white tablecloths. Molto elegante! So, our experience was positive from the minute we sat down but got even better when Dee made her appearance. She may have been my favorite server of 2026! What a joy she was, with her sunny disposition, whip smart sense of humor, and plain overall charm. We dove into the lunch menu and saw they had a ton of options within their Appetizer, Soup, Salad, Entrée. Burger, Pasta, and Sandwich/Wrap groupings. We went for two sandwiches - Eggplant with fries ($19) and Balsamic Marinated Portobello Mushroom Panini ($16.00) with fresh mozzarella, oven-fried tomatoes, arugula, roasted pepper aioli and a side salad. The Mushroom Panini was mine and it was fantastic; I loved every bite of it. I love mushrooms and that big Portobello, tomato, aioli combination was delicious. Toward the end of the meal, none other than owner Seyo Cecunjanin came over to thank us for our patronage and asked how we liked the meal. When we told him we loved it and we were first timers, he thanked us again in the form of a complimentary slice of their Pistachio cake! Portobello has a Happy Hour (how does a Chocolate Covered Strawberry Martini sound?), and that makes Portobello even more of a sweet destination to seek out and support. Thank you, Dee, Seyo, and everyone at Portobello for a five star experience.

Started off splitting the Kale salad and I love when places split in the kitchen for you and bring you each your half. Nice touch. Crispy bacon and goat cheese creamy dressing incredible. Cranberries to blend with and it's just a party in your mouth. Sensational. I told the waiter how much I love the Josie's meatballs but wanted the Branzino and couldn't decide so he said he could just bring me one meatball! Just enough as they are quite large. Note if you do this you don't get the delicious creamy cheese like the regular appetizer portion comes with but the sauce and meatball alone are incredible. I believe it comes with 3 on the appetizer portion. Again the sauce - wow! Branzino delicious. Second time getting it. Will have to get something different next time. Bf got the Bucatini Pork Sugo Napoletana and loved it as well. The pasta in the dish looked incredible. I had one bite and delicious flavors going on. Another great dinner at Bricco. The only issue here is even with a reservation we waited 30 minutes. We knew that though going in. Just be prepared to wait but that's how incredible this place is. People love it! Bar scene is fun too. We stayed for a drink after and were well taken care of. Delicious espresso martini to end the night. They brought me decaf from the kitchen special too!

We started with the shrimp alla vodka pasta, which was genuinely good and a dish I'd order again. We also shared an apple arugula salad that was fresh and well balanced, along with a side of fries that were just okay -- nothing special, but they did the job. The evening didn't start off smoothly, though. The restaurant was busy, and the wait to be seated took a while. Once we were seated, the service was okay at best -- attentive enough to get our order right, but not particularly warm or fast. That became more of an issue when our prosecco arrived flat. We had to work to get our waiter's attention to have it replaced, and it took much longer than it should have for someone to notice and follow up. We also tried a lavender vodka drink, which ended up being a bit of a letdown. It was expensive for what amounted to a small pour, and honestly the best part of it was the fancy glass it came in -- the drink itself didn't quite justify the price. Overall, the food carried the night. The pasta and salad were highlights, and I'd come back for those alone. But the service hiccups and pricey, underwhelming cocktails took some shine off the experience. If you go, stick to the pasta and maybe skip the specialty drinks.

And if your wildest dreams happen to revolve around Italian comfort foods and well stacked sandwiches, well, do I have a place to make those wildest dreams come true for you! La Rosa is your quintessential Italian deli with dozens of grinders, paninis, wraps, salads, soups and a daily hot bar of pasta and chicken entrees. We ordered a grilled Panino Melenzani ($12) with eggplant, tomato, fresh mozzarella, basil and olive oil. It was grilled right in front of our eyes, so it was as fresh as could be. It had plenty of tender sliced eggplant, yummy cheese and fresh tomatoes. I went with my usual, an Italian Combo (half size for $14) stacked a mile high with Ham, Turkey, Genoa, Mortadella, Capicola, and Provolone with lettuce, tomato, onions, and peppers on a fresh loaf of Italian bread. It was superb, and the portion size was so generous that it lasted me for three lunches. As we were paying, we spied some home-made cookies by the register and grabbed an oatmeal and a chocolate chip to take home. Everything ran $32 for a ton of wonderful Italian goodness. We didn't get a chance to check out the hot bar. It wasn't open today because LaRosa's Marketplace was closing early for personal reasons. But I promise you, the next time we visit we'll leave with one of their chicken or pasta entrees. We love our Italian delis, and LaRosa's has immediately shot up into our top tier.
