Time for a new experience! My wine dinner at Fleming's was cancelled at 6:30 with NO notification so this place gets the nod on my way home (not driving tonight). Starting it out with a glass of Liberty School Paso Robles Cabernet . Very nice! For my first item, I am trying the Special Salad of Artisal Greens (i.e. insulate) made with clementines (Oh my darling...), cactus fruit (?), sundried cranberries, caramelized walnuts and cheese tossed in a Tahitian vanilla bean vinaigrette with pomegranates. This ought to be interesting! This is an amazing item. The salad tastes like creme brûlée! I think the cactus fruit has seeds in it so beware. For my next item, from the crudo (or "Raw Bar"), I am trying the Polpo Carpaccio which is raw, thinly sliced octopus , celery, crispy fennel, lemon jam and pink peppercorns (well, that is the name of the place!). I have never had a "pink peppercorn." This is very good. Light too. For my next glass of wine, I am trying the Ornellia which is a Super Tuscan "Le Volte" (whatever that is). Time to find out! Wine is delicious. Comes in a huge glass! For my main course, off of the Specials menu, I am trying the pan seared Branzino (Mediterranean fish ) since they ran out of Icelandic halibut (obviously a popular dish tonight). It comes with a crispy, potato pancake, sautéed haricots verts, late harvest vegetables, truffle corn sauce and the "proper garnish." Wow! An incredible dish! For dessert, I am having the White Chocolate Bread Pudding with rum sauce and the "proper garnish." OMG! Look at this artwork! Taste is spot on too! For my final drink, a dessert wine , I am trying the 2008 Maculan Torcolato. Very nice! A small glass of yumminess! This ain't no wine tasting, but 3 glasses ain't bad and they were all real good! Peppercorn's Grill is always my favorite stop for restaurant week, given that they have more options than other local eateries and the quality is always amazing. My birthday always falls during Connecticut's statewide restaurant week, and since I hadn't been to Peppercorn's in a long time, yesterday was the perfect time to stop in. We were seated by the windows and started with a glass of wine while perusing the menu, deciding on veal-ricotta meatballs and prosciutto "sushi style" for appetizers. As perfect as I remembered them. I moved on to the scallop and lobster ravioli served in a decadent lobster cream sauce. Hands down, one of my favorite dishes anywhere. My boyfriend ordered the Stinco di Vitello, tender slow cooked New Zealand veal ossobuco with soffritto vegetables and balsamic white wine reduction served on top of polenta and roasted veggies -- exactly as good as it sounds. My chocolate bread pudding with bourbon custard was better than any birthday cake I could've imagined. Seriously rich, not cloyingly sweet, and altogether a perfect balance. Nick ordered the apple crisp which was similarly excellent. Altogether a wonderful meal with great service! read more

When to Peppercorn's with the BF this evening after a long draining week. We started off with stuffed baby artichokes. My BF loved it, I thought it was okay and it simply reminded me of how much I love artichokes. The lobster bisque was super thick. I counted 4 pieces of lobster. I expected it to be watery but overall it was really good just on the heavy creamy side. My favorite part of the meal was being introduced to John Dory. I never had John Dory before but goodness the fish was to die for. It was so buttery and soft that once you put it in your mouth you couldn't stop. The fish was paired with a crab stuffing which I could have done without. The stuffing was on the dry side. I would have preferred to have the fish plain with lemon wedges. The food was delicious but def high in calories. I'm not used to a heavy meal so half way through I couldn't keep my eyes open. Parking sucks! I hate paying for parking just to go to a restaurant. This place isn't ideal for large parties . Tables are cramped. They have Christmas decorations up. I personally don't like the decor, for the price they are charging the place need a more stylish decor. read more

My family and I did a take out order from Dino's fabulous Peppercorn's Resturant last nite. What made it special as always was the food despite being take out was wonderful as ever. From lobster ravioli, polpo carpaccio , petti di pollo, every bite was superb. We celebrate all my families big events with Dino and this one was no different except take out. We had reservations at 830. Didn't sit till 9. Didn't order drinks till 930. Again. While food was to die for. The service sucked. The waitress we ended up getting. She was amazing. She was middle age with accent. She was great. But she was our third server who finally decided to acknowledge us. That was the problem. We weren't even acknowledged most of the visit. I am updating my review from 2 years ago from 3 stars to 4 stars after spending some time at the bar during a Monday happy-hour. The bartender was attentive and made sure we had enough chairs at the bar for everyone in our group. I like that they have happy-hour drink and food specials. I had the truffle fries and tri-color salad which was very fresh: arugula, endive and red cabbage in a balsamic dressing. Michael the bartender expressed his foodie-ness to back his recommendations and was able to talk to the flavors in the wine we were drinking. They still have the complimentary valet which is a huge factor in where we choose to get together for these work mingle-networking occasions. This place exceeded out expectations. We were headed to a comedy show so we looked for a good place to eat prior to the show. We utilized restaurant.com for some good deals and this place came up. The good thing also is that you can utilize OpenTable to make reservations. Started off with the calamari which was very good. Not over cooked or chewy although I would have rather it come with marinara sauce than the lemon aoli but that was still good. Also had a bottle of the Ruta 22 Malbec which was amazing, some of the better Malbecs I have had. Next we had a chopped salad, lobster bisque and the lobster bolognese. The chopped salad was fresh and chilled with a good sized portion. The bolognese was very good, home made pasta in a slightly creamy sauce with very fresh large pieces of lobster and a perfect portion size. The lobster bisque, now this is where this place climbs above the rest. It had a very nice smoky taste and large fresh pieces of lobster. This is the absolute best soup I have ever had. I could not get over the smoky taste that it has, AMAZING!! Robyn was our waitress and she was extremely nice and as sweet as can be. The gentleman who started us with water was also very polite. The only gripe I have is that when I asked the valet to grab us a cab he told me to call for one. I have no problem calling but being a valet and such a nice place I thought they would be able to get one quicker and easier. 4.5 stars and I only docked them the .5 because of the valet. read more

My first time at Peppercorns, it a nice classy place. I had their House Salad and Ravioli Al Aragosta. I'm not really a salad person but that was good! It has walnuts, fruits such as orange, cranberries, pineapples, pomegranate and pears. Light balsamic and a hint of vanilla. I was really surprised that I liked it. Ravioli Al Aragosta is a lobster ravioli dish. All I have to say is that the ravioli was SO Delicious. I haven't had a ravioli dish that was this good. The sauce and the lobster balance the whole plate. I recommend you try this dish out, it's that good. read more

I came here with my boyfriend for happy hour before seeing a show at the Bushnell. Happy hour ran from 4 to 7, which was great sense it was in extended time frame compared other restaurants nearby. They had drinks anywhere from $5-$7 and good appetizers. There was only one person behind the bar however and I think that made service a little slow, because it was really popular night. Years back this was my go to place, Great food, great service and a busy and fun place - even at lunch. So I was very disappointed when I had a chance to go back and have lunch. Not that it was bad - it was just average. The sole was done well and the service was attentive. the bread was standard fare but we were pleased the staff was happy to offer salad/double vegetable for the meals. I plan to go back as there was me interesting items on the menu to try - but its a bit out of my may and well max and Trumbull Kitchen really pop when you visit - Peppercorns needs to make me want to come back. read more

Peppercorn's earned their 5-star review almost entirely based on the service we received, although the food was also worthy. We walked in a few minutes before 7pm on Friday night, asking if any tables were open. We explained that we were going to the show at the Bushnell that evening, so we were in a bit of a hurry. The waitress seated us almost immediately even though the restaurant was very busy and we didn't have reservations. Our waitress understood our time restraints and was attentive and swift. She brought us our drinks and bread right away and even recommended to stay away from certain food items that take longer to cook. My friend had the gnocchi and I had the rigatoni. I absolutely agree with the other reviews here raving about the rigatoni. I ate half of it and was full beyond means but wanted to finish it, it was so good. Our waitress brought us the check when she saw we were about halfway done, so that it could be processed and signed by the time we were ready to go. I had set an alarm on my phone for 7:45, giving us 15 minutes to get our check, walk back, and find our seats - the alarm went off as we were leaving Peppercorn's. I was really impressed with how well they took our predicament (45 minutes to get seated, find a meal, order it, and eat it) and handled us professionally, positively, and made us feel welcome. At no point did we feel rushed, even though we were rushing them. I will definitely make reservations here the next time I'm going to a show. read more

Dined at Peppercorns on Valentine's Day before a show at the Bushnell. I had made reservations way in advance, fortunately, because it was predictably VERY busy! Our server was Denise, and she was FANTASTIC! Answered our questions, helped with suggestions, attentive but not obtrusive, and very sweet! We never felt rushed, even with a full house, and when we were finished, there was no wait to pay the bill. The food was outstanding (rib eye au poivre and filet mignon, Valentine's salad, oysters). Was looking forward to a nice meal before the show at the Bushnell last night. Conveniently located right down the street, we decided to go to Peppercorns since we haven't been to for a very long time. So long, it seems, that what I remember in no way matched our experience last night. We had a reservation through Open Table which is always a plus and I appreciate the convenience when restaurants subscribe to that service. We were seated right away although when we requested a table away from the draft of the front door we were put at a table that could not accommodate the size of the plates very well over the course of the dinner. In short, it was really cramped. Overall the service and timing of food to table was very good. However, everything else seemed to suffer from what I can only refer to as a lack of imagination. The appetizer we ordered was the antipasto del giorno. When it came out my first thought was it was simply a plate of haphazardly placed deli meat. There was barely any hard cheese and I was scratching my head at the inclusion of what appeared to be cottage cheese. Compare the content and presentation to what you get at, for example, J. Gilbert's or Grants and its night and day. My wife ordered the lobster stuffed ravioli and she said it was very good. But the plate was very bland looking. It was simply the ravioli covered with a brownish sauce with a drizzle of what appeared to be either a cheese sauce or sour cream. Nothing else to pop the plate for the eye. I had the filet mignon. It was cooked perfectly but the glaze was just so-so. The accompanying veggies were a bit over cooked as was the extra side of asparagus I ordered. Not worth the money in my opinion. We didn't have time for dessert but the menu looked fairly competent. The service was prompt and courteous but the presentation of the food was under par from what we were expecting. The flavor of the food was OK so I think we'll try elsewhere next time. read more

I am beyond disappointed to report that we returned to Peppercorn's tonight, raving about it to my family who came from out of town to be there. We had an absolutely AWFUL experience. We called ahead to see if they could accommodate our party and they assured us they'd be happy to. "Come on over," they said. When we arrived the waitress did tell us that they were busier than expected tonight. (Even though it's Saturday night and they were participating in, "Taste of Hartford." We arrived at 7:30 and did not receive our meals until 9:30. Several tables stood up and walked out after we were ignored by wait staff. We couldn't even get the water that we were asking for. The worst part is that no one even bothered to apologize to us or explain what was going on. After we Finally approached them about it, they were beyond rude. When the food finally came, it was decent. However, we can absolutely never return and I hope you don't bother wasting your night here either. Too many other great options in Hartford, west Hartford, and Glastonbury to put up with this awful service. read more

Four of us sat at a table near the window - it's a bad spot to dine because the front door can be heard banging loudly for patrons as they enter and exit frequently. Service from our waiter was superb. Oysters on the half shell were enjoyed by those who ate them. The shrimp cocktail and meatball apps were ok. The NY strip steak was very good. The veal chop was also good, though not nearly as good as at Abe & Louis', a very high-end steak house in Boston and Florida. I went there last week for my birthday for the first time since the pandemic started and I wasn't disappointed. I got the OssoBucco, which most Italian restaurants only have occasionally as specials, Peppercorns has on the menu, and it was terrific! Everything we ordered was fantastic, from the calamari, shrimp and bruschetta for appetizers, the Caesar salad, to the rigatoni, salmon and ravioli for dinner, everything was amazing! Hartford's an odd town for restaurants. You think you're in the middle of nowhere, a desolate wasteland bereft of nice restaurants... and then something nice like Peppercorn's just happens to be sitting there. Indeed, Peppercorn's isn't exactly in the heart of Downtown Hartford, but it won't matter once you step inside. It's a pleasant, quasi-upscale Italian restaurant, complete with a small bar, and an unpretentious waitstaff. I must echo the sentiments of many other reviewers: The ravioli is AWESOME. It's hard to describe until you taste it... it's just got that you-know-it's-fresh-pasta taste and texture to it. I tried an artichoke ravioli in a butter sauce that was particularly decadent. The prociutto-wrapped "Italian Sushi" is a unique dish - wrapped around figs and topped with a balsamic reduction, it's a nice salty start to a meal. Just cut them in half before eating them - I wouldn't call them "one bite wonders" like sushi should be. Anyway, it's really nice place. It's pricey, but it's worth a return trip. read more

And for what it's worth -- it's pricey Italian food. The customer service has always been courteous, friendly and very helpful though. Peppercorn's is truly one of the last great restaurants in Hartford. Forget the whole Franklin Avenue area - there really is no comparison. Peppercorns may be handicapped by its location off the beaten path and adjacent to a methadone clinic. All of that becomes insignificant, however - the food is always terrific as is the service. The drinks on the happy hour menu range from $4 to $7 and I definitely enjoyed every cocktail I drank that evening - their house made cucumber infused vodka was especially notable. Happy hour appetizers were mostly in that same price range and allowed us to have tastes of quite a few yummy delights. The ravioli on the happy hour menu that day was the lobster - which I would definitely recommend. Everything from the apps to the salads to dessert was absolutely delicious, perfectly seasoned and cooked. Some truly great execution from the kitchen! We were a party of 4 going out to celebrate a birthday with dinner and the UConn game at the XL center down the road. Despite having reservations, it took a little wait before being seated, not because it was busy, but because there wasn't a host behind the booth for a while. I was unimpressed with the somewhat snobby and rude way in which we were greeted - it didn't feel very welcoming. Despite the initial impression, I was looking forward to our meal becuase I had heard good things about this place from a friend. The service was fairly decent, until we gave our waitress a restaurant.com coupon - part of the coupon rules is that an 18% gratuity is automatically added to the bill. I suppose our waitress figured that, since she was guaranteed an 18% tip, she didn't have to provide good service (and I generally tip over 20% so she should have just done her job well and provided good service, and she would have been left more than the generic 18%). The service was SLOW (not good when you have plans following dinner). The place was not very busy, and by the time we left we were one of the only tables. So I don't know what the reason was for the hold up. Our appetizer came out after a long wait, but without any appetizer plates. We asked for them and received them promptly. Dinner came out and was very good. It wasn't anything too over-the-top amazing or spectacular, but it was solid, decent food nonetheless. We seldom saw our waitress, and she only came to check on our meals when we were almost finished with the entrees (and one of us had ordered a steak, so she should have checked back in with us after he cut in to it to make sure it was cooked as ordered). Waiting on refills for drinks was annoying. Around 8:15pm (we initially sat down at 7pm) we ordered dessert. The game was at 9pm and was only about 5 minutes away, so we figured 40 minutes was plenty of time for a quick cup of coffee and an ice cream sundae. Wrong. We had even expressed to our waitress that we were going to the game at 9, so she was fully aware of the circumstances. We also mentioned that we were celebrating a birthday - a table nearby had gotten a birthday candle in their dessert and we were hoping for the same cute touch. About 30 minutes later, around 8:45pm, the dessert finally came out (I'm sorry, but 30 minutes for a few cups of coffee and an ice cream sundae is completely ridiculous, especially when she knew we were trying to get somewhere by 9pm - and at 8:15, when we ordered, this was a completely reasonable time frame!). There was no birthday candle, no apology for the absurd wait, nothing - just dropped off the dessert and the check and told us that she added her own tip on. I did not receive an itemized receipt, only the credit card receipt (I had provided my credit card to the hostess before being seated, as I was treating my guests, so the card had already been charged). We scarfed down the dessert very quickly and left in a rush to try to make it to the game. I was very disappointed that I had chosen this restaurant for a special celebration. We don't go out to nice dinners every day, so when celebrating an occasion you expect (and deserve) to receive proper service. Nobody deserves poor treatment, especially when paying a lot of money. I'm not sure if we would have received better service if we hadn't had the restaurant.com certificate (it is sad to think a waitress would purposely neglect a table just because she knew she was guaranteed a tip already). The food was good, but to me service is just as important as the dinner, and it was truly lacking here. I hope that their other servers are better than the one we had, but unfortunately our waitress left a bad taste in our mouth and I don't think we will be going back. read more

This one frustrates me. I've been to Peppercorns a ton over the years, as it has always been one of my favorites. But this past weekend's visit was a disappointment. Our server was new and inexperienced. She didn't know what menu items were, she didn't recognize dish names. She was also inattentive. Our drinks sat empty. No biggie - the rest of the waitstaff seemed on the ball. I'm not here for the service - I'm here for the food! I love the classic italian menu, lots of salumi plates and lovely sounding pastas. We toiled over our selection, and finally settled on three apps + two entrees for two people (yes, the menu looked that good). Here's the skinny on apps: - Lobster Carpaccio was the standout, with an inventive presentation for classic flavors: lobster, spring peas, and truffles. - Prosciutto de parma with figs - I eat prosciutto like it's my job. This particular plate offered enjoyable, albeit dry, meat. - Carpaccio trio of tuna, octopus and veal. There were only two quarter-sized pieces of veal, equivalent in volume to two peas. Was the kitchen out of veal? The smoky tuna was great. The entrees were the great shortfall...my hubby's "Prime Ribeye" was seared so hot it was contracted into a bowl shape. Thin cut, it looked like something served in a diner with eggs. And served with french fries for $31????? My Striped Bass fell victim to the restaurant's heat lamp. By the time it made it tableside, the plate was searing hot and the fish and roasted potatoes were so dry they were unpalatable. These plates should have never left the kitchen. Even great restaurants go through ups and downs. Maybe this Saturday night dinner service was short a chef and working with the "B" team. But at $200 a clip, I'm hesitant to be the supersleuth behind what went wrong. read more

The food we had was all good - there are no complaints to offer on that end. It was not out of this world either, though. We got the distinct impression that we did not look old enough or wealthy enough (we were dressed nicely, but casual, and in keeping with mist if the crowd) to receive proper service. I write this sitting at peppercorn grill waiting for my dinner plate to be cleared. My fiancé and I had high hopes for our meal, we had tried peppercorn back in the winter during restaurant week and really enjoyed our experience. We had great food and a great server. A few months back we bought a groupon and tonight was the night to use it. To start we walked in and the host looked us up and down like we didn't belong. And even when he found our reservation he couldn't figure out where to sit us. (Our reservation was at 630 and most tables in the main dining room was empty). He also just pointed us to the table and didn't actually seat us or give us menus. As a matter of fact we got our bread well before our menus. Next was our waitress. She appeared already stressed and again there were maybe 3 other tables seated. She barely acknowledged us throughout our meal and frankly was just a giant sourpuss. One table actually said loud enough for us to hear how bad she was. We were impressed by the specials menu, we had many more options to choose from over their basic menu. We had the antipasto for the table which was delicious, so we had high hopes for our entrees. My fiancé had Chilean sea bass with shrimp and veggies, it was just ok, the description on the menu was better. I took a risk and ordered the cod special with lump crab topping, asparagus and a potato cake. The presentation was nice and that's about it. I suspect my food was victim to the heat lamp as my fish was so overcooked it was dead, buried and the funeral was already over by time it was served to me. It was very disappointing. We were looking forward to a great meal and this really fell short. We passed on desert. We are going to sonic for ice cream where you are greeted and served with a smile ;) read more

Recently had dinner with friends here on a Saturday nite..the nite started out great--I was happy to find an open, free parking space in the lot next to the restaurant..the valet attendant greeted me as I walked by to the restaurant, which was a nice touch! The hostess was very efficient..I arrived before my friends, and was seated right away. The menu is extensive and took time for us to work through..I've heard that Peppercorns focuses on seasonal offerings, and that did reflect in the many specials choices (a cool thing)! Out waitress knew the menu and details on the specials, which was helpful since we did have questions. We started with salads..all three were unique..one friend had a salad with a cactus fruit and kumquat, along with berries and a vanilla bean vinaigrette..it was delicious--not too sweet! My salad was with dandelion greens from imported from Italy; the vinaigrette was very garlicky--which was noted on the menu..I'm glad I got to try something so traditionally Italian, but if you aren't a garlic fan, you won't like this! My entree was the gnocchi special--with eggplant in a spicy red sauce...was yummy and filling..the gnocchi did melt my mouth :-) I had a chocolate lava cake with hazelnut gelato for desert..was awesome! tried some of the bread pudding desert--that was very delicious, too! Went to Peppercorn's for the first time on a Saturday evening after having purchased a Restaurant.com gift certificate. The menu looks amazing and there were a ton of options so it was hard to decide. We started off with a special beet salad and pasta fagioli soup. I love beet salad but this was the least tasty version I've ever had. Mushy beets and a few greens were past their prime. It wasn't so bad that I'd send it back but it didn't live up to the promise of the menu description. The beans in the pasta fagioli were a little crunchy and flavor was lacking. We also tried the shrimp cocktail and it was excellent...Fresh, large and tasty shrimp cooked perfectly...But alone on a plate with some cocktail sauce. I should mention that the free bread with dipping oil was excellent also. For the main course we opted for the Oso Bucco which was the highlight of the night. It was tender with a delicious sauce accompanied by some perfectly cooked veggies and mashed potatoes. The decor was very strange, confusing and unappealing. Even in the ladies room there's a hodgepodge of styles (and two Christmas decorations thrown in for good measure). Overall, we didn't leave hungry but I'm also not sure we'd go back. The experience just didn't live up to the menu and expectations. Service was ok but overbearing at times while missing when we wanted the check. It seems like the talent at this place rests with the person who developed the menu. The execution of those wonderful selections needs to be brought up to the same level. If that happened and a decorator was brought in I have no doubt that Peppercorn's would be a favorite for us. read more

I went there for a birthday party, and I can say the food I had off of other's plates were good, but the food off of my plate was typical. Next time I'm going to try to order something better. The place looked okay inside, but I saw one of the clientele drive in with a Ferrari. Nice. read more
