I've been craving a steak Philly cheesesteak sandwich for awhile and this is the closest to authentic I'll get in Lawrence. The meat is so thinly sliced and it pairs nicely with the fresh veggies! I usually get mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, and jalapeños...but you have the option to hold or take whatever you like. During my lunch break it's best for me to order off the kids menu because their portions are big enough to share or split into two meals. The kids sandwich is the perfect size and fills me up with a small fry on the side. This kids meal includes a drink and cookies as well. They have a variety of different sauces to choose from that you can dip your fries or sandwich in or out it over a rice bowl, burrito, salad, loaded nachos or fries. I have tried everything on the menu except the salad, because the last thing I want is a bowl of lettuce when I walk in here. I'm done with pepperjax. Last time I was there, the person who took my order was rude, disrespectful, rushing, and had a terrible attitude toward me. They threw my toppings down on the grill with no regard and gave me death stares. I came back a few months later, and I told the workers about my previous experience. All they did was tell me they've gotten complaints about that person and left it at that. No accommodations. No free drink. No I'm so sorry about that. I visited this location with my partner today and as soon as we walked in we encountered an employee (cooking the sandwiches) that was completely rude. As my partner gave the cook his order, he kept asking him follow up questions about the order that were very aggressive in tone. It seemed as if they were getting impatient with him even though it literally only took him like 30 seconds to order. The two employees working the counter did not try to be pleasant or polite AT ALL. I was actually taken aback but did not address the issue in the store. We both have a lot of experience in the service industry, so I know how it feels to deal with difficult customers. But we weren't difficult! Nor was the restaurant busy. I don't understand why it seemed the employees were ANNOYED by our presence for placing a single order. The ambiance was extremely unwelcoming. I don't condone customers entering a service space and treating employees horribly on any day, and quite frankly, I did not have the time to confront the employees working the counter today. As someone who's worked in the service industry, all I can say is this about the employees' terrible attitudes today: if employees at this store continue greeting customers with impatient, crass, and annoyed attitudes, one day they will encounter the right customer with time to match that same energy. read more

This was a bust from the beginning...there was 8 of us, and my 12yo needed to use the restroom, i said we'll go to the bathroom first then ill order...the lady was very unhappy about that. And yelled at us, i have to unlock it. As we stood there reading the menu the lady worker again screamed at us... how many fries or sides....i said I'm not sure (i was still reading the menu) she yelled at us no less than 5 times about the sides & fries. Why yell at us! Give us a second to read the menu!!! Then once ordered, the second worker was slamming our sandwiches onto the counter. After the fourth or fifth slammed sandwich, i asked if we have upset him or what we did wrong? The lady said, she called you a he....my deepest apologies but i would have corrected my pronouns with a simple...,i prefer.... Still dont know what we did to make them all so unhappy to begin with & slam all our sandwiches. Once our food arrived there was huge hair in the fries and again made them upset asking for a replacement. My sister attended KU many years ago and we all loved pepperjax & couldn't wait to get back to it! If i was the owners, id be taking a look at who you are employing and representing your business. Pepperjax is our go to lunch spot when we are looking for something quick and casual in Lawrence. We are usually coming here in the way in or out of town so quick and delicious is definitely a plus. My husband always gets the Philly cheesesteak which is their specialty and they make the fries to order if you'd like them on the side. I get the chicken rice bowl which has a generous portion of rice and all the toppings you'd like. It's always delicious and filling for me. They have great kids meals as well. This time we opted for chicken and she got an applesauce and milk included on the side. Wonderful! read more

Nice place to get a sandwich(personal favorite is the steak philly) on the cheap. There is almost never a line and the interior is usually clean. They've carved out a niche on Mass St. I would like for them to have a more diverse selection of beers. They currently only serve craft and Boulevard. Get some IPAs in there! read more

Pepperjax doesn't deserve 3 stars, but it also shouldn't be 4 stars either. I rate this place a 3.5. It's definitely overpriced for what you get. I got a steak Philly and it was $8.51 and that did not include fries or a drink. I could go down the street to Free State and get a beef sandwich with fries for $1.50 more and the quality would be much better. The sandwich tasted good, but there wasn't anything great about it. This place is good to go for a quick low-key bite to eat, but with all the other quick bite restaurants surrounding it, this wouldn't be my first choice. Chipotle is 2 doors down and has much better quality and quantity of ingredients for the same price. Fuzzy's or Taco Zone would also be better. Pepperjax isn't bad at all, but it is overpriced and there are better choices surrounding it. read more

I eat here all the time! Great staff, great food. I swear, if you've been out drinking on Mass St. this is the best place to eat to ensure you don't get a hangover. Disclaimer: I haven't eaten meat in 4 years. That said, when I did eat meat I loved their philly with mushroom, onion and cheese. Then again, what's a philly with no cheese? For that sandwich, the deserve 4 stars. More recently I had the veggie philly which I felt would and could have been WAY better if they offered a protein, tofu, seitan, tempeh, to name a few. Trying to find a decent sandwich in Lawrence is like trying to find the veal cordon bleu in an MRE box, ain't gonna happen, not until I tried PepperJax Grill anyway. While far from the best sandwich, in general, or cheesesteak, in particular, I have ever had, PepperJax' cheesesteak was the best sandwich I have eaten in Lawrence. Their menu is very limited with cheesesteaks, rice bowls, burritos, nachos and salads, all in the $7.29 to $7.99 range, as well as several sides including fries, chips and salsa/queso, and mandarin oranges. The combination of cheesesteaks and Mexican fare is a bit odd, but the cheesesteaks are decent. Having eaten "real" cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, PepperJax claims theirs' is "America's Best Philly", but I do not concur. There is ample diced beef sauteed with peppers and onions and the 10-12 inch roll was soft and fresh. The cheese was a nondescript American variety, not the traditional Cheese Whiz found on Philadelphia cheesesteaks and mushrooms, not green bell peppers, would be a more Philly-like addition. The sandwich was tasty and filling. I also ordered two sides of fries ($2.50 each) , but the guy behind the counter talked me out of one, telling me "they're really big, so you may want just one", so I followed his advice. Turns out they were not as big as he had said and were just barely enough for two of us, but they were fresh, hot and crispy, a nice accompaniment to the cheesesteaks. There is also a condiment bar with four sauces (au jus, chili sauce, and two others as well as the usual catsup, mustard, napkins, and plasticware. Decent food, good price, great customer service. I had the chicken bowl with pepper jack queso sauce. The food was decent but not as fresh as I would've liked. This place is very similar to Q'doba, if you like Q'doba you will enjoy Pepperjax, unfortunately I do not like Q'doba so I wasn't thrilled with this type of food. Worst sandwich I can remember having recently. Got the chicken philly. It was so dry I could barely choke any of it down. They use sliced cheese, which was my first sign it was not going to be a good philly, then pile everything on top. It's not hot enough to actually melt the cheese, so the whole top of the sandwich is just dry meat and bread. Tried to dress it up with mayo and some au jus sauce, but it didn't help. Stopped in for a quick lunch on the way through Kansas, excellent experience! Very friendly staff. The steak philly was very good, perfectly toasted bun with melted cheese, and the options to add onions, jalapeños, and mushrooms in with your meat. Perfect! We added fries on the side too, they came out right after we ordered and we're just right. Love the spices they use for the meat and fries.
