This is my new favorite coffee shop. I'm so lucky that it's here in Middletown. Unfortunately, there's no way I can make it here before work. It will be have to be my weekend coffee shop...I can't wait for the weekends! If you've ever parked behind Eli's in Middletown, you'll know how to find Perkatory. Located in an old brick building with high ceilings, it has an edgy, industrial vibe. The front room does offer some cozy seating, but if you want to be near the action (and refills), you have a choice of the bar area or small tables. Perkatory offers roasted coffee beans, coffee, tea & hot chocolate. I have been here a handful of times and have only ordered the Lochness...a creamy, sweet latte. One day I will order something else, but this drink is perfection! Hungry? They have small case of baked goods with large scones, cookies & muffins. My son ordered the S'mores scone and couldn't put it down! If you follow their Facebook page you'll get updates to their comedy shows, live music and other events. Middletown is home to so many places I love, and Perkatory is yet another! Perkatory sells delicious coffee In a cool, yet welcoming, setting. They have a variety of drinks, including hot chocolate and chai tea. I tried one of their monthly special lattes, called "Dead and Breakfast", which was a brown butter maple flavor. I ordered it iced with oat milk, and it was so good!! It was a bit sweet, but that's what I was hoping for with a maple latte. I also appreciated that I felt the caffeine kick after drinking it. The service was friendly and quick. They offer a small selection of bagels and pastries, but the focus is more on the drinks. If you appreciate good coffee, you will surely like it. My friend has been telling me about Perkatory for the last year and we finallllyyyyy made it here together the other day. I am absolutely in love with this place. The barista working was supeerrrr nice and helpful and everything inside is so cool and perfect for the season. This place had some nice options but i especially love the atmosphere! Outside of coffee they had some teas and sparkling lemonade. I got the strawberry one which was really nice and refreshing. I also got a slice of the banana bread which was really nice and fresh. They offered other little bakery items which was nice. The staff was also very nice and quick. Really cool place, great coffee drinks! Everything looked so good that I got a cold brew drink AND a hot drip coffee. I got maple syrup in my cold brew for some sweetness. It's so big inside too. They offer bagels and baked goods which are good but pretty basic ( I got a cheddar bagel and a chocolate muffin), the coffee is the stand out here. I've never even bought whole coffee beans but I was so impressed I bought a bag here because I saw so many people were, you get a free coffee with your purchase which is always nice. Great friendly service, the line gets long but the counter baristas work fast. I live an hour away but I'm already planning my return, there's just not enough good sized places like this and I appreciate the room to not be on top of everyone! Bigger than it looks from the outside! There's plenty of space in this cool coffee shop (just don't try to kick the skeleton out of the counter chair!) Got a hearty caffe americano yesterday. They have plenty of coffees, teas, and other latte drinks in addition to a few pastries and bagels. Bagels were very flat - my husband had one and it tasted okay but didn't have the right bagel consistency. The woman working at the counter was super professional and friendly. There are a bunch of tables or couches to sit at. 90s/2000s emo/punk soundtrack playing was pretty great (I may have been singing a long a bit). Parking here is also great because it shares the lot with Eli Cannon's, so you don't have to park on the street. I'd definitely come back here to grab a cup with a friend! read more

The word is out with the skeletons at NoRA and Eli Cannon's, cause they're making themselves at home here! Perkatory is airy and clean--no dust, even on the chalkboard menu. The space is industrial yet inviting, and not surprisingly, filled in steadily after us. The menu includes the usual coffee espresso standards, pour over, a selection of baked goods in the case, and coffee bags to go. It's a neat place to look at during a short wait for your drink, starting with the mid-century modern coffee roaster in the corner. Also, my pour over was well worth the wait! The plain white mugs are nice in the black and white dining room, but a few logo mugs are available for purchase too (and stickers!!!). Other than the skeleton man at the bar who couldn't be bothered, the staff were friendly as can be. Perkatory has great brew, great atmosphere, and is the perfect warm place on a cold day. read more

I don't want to be overly dramatic here, but this place is nearly perfect. I've been here quite a few times now and every time I leave I'm already thinking about what I will order next time. The space is big and open, there's great natural light and there is plenty of seating. Importantly, there is free parking right outside their door, which is a big deal in Middletown. The staff is always friendly and very helpful- I am a latte fanatic but hate it when they're too sweet and they easily accommodate my request. I've gotten many different lattes and a couple of regular drip coffees with alternative milks and I have been a big fan of all of them. My favorite so far has been the turmeric latte I think- I loved the slightly spicy, not too sweet and complex flavors. However, I'm always a sucker for trying one of the special monthly lattes, so I end up getting something else half the time. There are tons of choices for all things coffee and some things non-coffee as well. Plus there are various choices of dairy free milks, so you can never get bored! I really love this place whether I'm meeting a friend or (more likely) grabbing a coffee on the way to work. One of these days I hope to make it to one of their fun evening events as well! read more

It took me awhile to figure out where this coffee shop was. It's hidden behind a couple of run down lots, but it is a jem. They have smooth coffee that they roast themselves and they have an interesting theme going on and an open space. It's a nice place to sit and write. I have had their mocha latte and they are willing to work with you on special requests. I asked to have a mocha with their cocoa fuego instead of just a hot chocolate, and they were very flexible. The only complaint I have is the lack of good pastries. I've had their scones which are OK, but not great. If they found a good place for the pastries and worked with their theme of 'perkatory' for their pastries, I think they would be an even bigger hit. read more

I went here when I was in town very excited because I love the southington location. Well...I'll be sticking to southington. The parking is horrendous, the place was way too loud, the cashier was kind of rude, she didn't listen to my order either. She asked me twice what I wanted and still got it wrong. It wasn't like it was especially busy in there or anything. To top it off she spelled my name wrong despite it being on her screen because I entered my number for the rewards program. She had also asked me my name and like I said before...didn't listen. This wasnt even close to what I said my name was. If you want a good cup...go to the southington location. read more

There's a massive black and white poster on the wall that reads "Death Before Decaf," which pairs perfectly with this purgatory-themed coffee shop. It's a large, open space with a warehouse-like feel. There's a skeleton sitting at the bar drinking coffee (no joke!), so he must've chosen death before decaf. There are two couches, some tables and chairs, then counters and seating against the walls. You could come to chat with friends or to get some work done, as both seem acceptable here. A wooden shelf is along the wall on the left and has some Shel Silverstein books for you to peruse and entertain your kids with. They make exquisitely delicious coffee: the kind you want to drink black, just so you can taste the notes of citrus, flowers, chocolate, or whatever flavor is meant to be evoked from the beans! We got an Ethiopia pourover. As the sign informed us, it did take about 5 minutes for it to be made, so I wouldn't get it if I was in a rush. But man, was it delicious! So smooth and crisp, and the flavors were mellow, yet beautifully highlighted. If black coffee isn't your thing, they do have lattes, cold brew, blended drinks, nitro, and cappuccinos! There was a small board by the cash register displaying specialty drinks like The Pumpkin King (which is cold brew with pumpkin spice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and caramel swirl) and The Headless Horseman (pumpkin spice chai). They also serve Ritual Earth Tea for the non-coffee lovers. Punk rock music was playing overhead but it was not overbearing. There are restrooms available. Apparently parking can be challenging, as they share a lot with the community center. We used the metered street parking. Even though this coffee shop just opened in September, they seem to be running smoothly and doing lots of things right! My only suggestion would be to have another employee working, as there was only one employee making all the drinks and manning the cash register and it got pretty busy. Overall, while the theme of the shop isn't my jam, the coffee would draw me back any day!! read more

So this new entry into locally owned Middletown business is rocking! This was my second time and I will wait for the light on Main Street to make the trip here. Parking is a bit of a challenge and if you are a creative Parker you will be just fine. Great wide open warehouse location with a bit of hellish attitude. They roast their own coffee to medium blend and it is perfect. They have a good assortment of muffins and pastries. Service is with a smile and they know their coffee. They now have merchandise which is cool looking so if you want to advertise on their behalf there is plenty to chose from. I tried the Brie and Sage muffin (no I'm serious and it was delicious. It attracts the typical Mtown crowd. Get your coffee on here. read more

I really like this place. Anyone else who is/was a punk rock Generation X'er or Y'er and who appreciates premium quality coffee will, too. The soundtrack at this place is a continuous loop of punk rock (mostly from the '90's and '00's, but other decades find representation). I never thought I'd hear Operation Ivy through coffeeshop speakers in Connecticut! For this reason, as well as the lack of pretentiousness or flakiness on the part of the baristas, I feel more at home at this coffeeshop than any other in Connecticut. The Gen X/Gen Y punk aesthetic is blended with the theme of the macabre (e.g., a reaper in the Perkatory logo--and the name "Perkatory" itself suggestive of Purgatory). The drink punch card is called the Reaper Card (a nice touch, also suggestive of reaping what you sow--a free drink after buying ten). The coffee is great and I appreciate the presence of items on their menu that aren't easy to find elsewhere, such as local maple syrup (only a few places in CT offer this), and other flavors that I've not seen elsewhere at all (e.g., sugar-free brown sugar cinnamon). The cocoa fuego (spicy hot chocolate with chili powder) is excellent--not overbearing--and delicious with oat milk. That's another thing: in addition to the standard dairy milks, they offer almond, soy, coconut, and oat. Oat milk is catching on, so this may become a less unique feature after a while, but still worth pointing out at this time. The frozen blended drinks seem really interesting, though I can't attest to their taste (haven't tried them yet). Their baked goods seem good, though I've not had many. Vegan options (brownie, two flavors of cookie) from ION are stocked. They have an asiago tea bread, which at least looks good (haven't tried it yet, either). Seating is adequate in number and variety, though I will admit that I think they could use more electrical outlets for people doing work. They do have them at a bar area, but sometimes sitting and working at a stool is awkward. The dude who answered someone's question on here about whether this place is conducive to work by saying that they have plenty of outlets is just wrong (and funny enough, he works there--seems to be the guy who runs the place). Of course, coffeeshops aren't libraries, and they've got to work within the limits of the space they have, so this shouldn't be counted too much against them. More on the downside, parking can be really difficult to come by and even a bit confusing. (Are the signs that indicate spots are parking for Perkatory for customer usage? It's not obvious, though a barista told me that they are.) And though I love the music (as stated above), I guess I'd caution that some of the lyrical content may not be suitable for kids (though I was a kid listening to these songs and I turned out alright). The lyrics to the Descendents' "I'm Not a Loser" come to mind. Overall, a very cool coffeeshop. I hope their addition of a location in Southington doesn't mean they've sold out. ;) read more

I've only been to this location once since it's a bit of a trek from my house, but I absolutely loved it when I went back in February. It's in a bit of an odd location in this almost down looking brick building, once inside there is a front area with couches and some board games which is where we hung out with our friends and played an intense game of Jenga. The area near all the coffee and tea action had more tables and seating options if I remember correctly. They had a great variety of teas and coffees and more than one person in our party said it was the best tea/coffee they have had in awhile. They also offer some snacks like little scones and such. Next time I'm in the area I'll definitely drop by. read more
