I went to Perry's for their Restaurant Week menu and had a mixed experience. The service was great and the starter, the fried shrimp, was delectable and had the most amazing seasoning and sauce ever. I am begging them to put it on their regular menu! But the other dishes were a lot more hit or miss. The beef and egg in the wagyu bowl were good, but the rice was gluey, overcooked, and under seasoned. There was a massive stodgy bowl of rice that just had been cooked to a mush, and that took away from what would have otherwise been a great dish. Both of us got the rice bowl and the texture was The same in both, so it wasn't just mine. The tiramisu was solid, but it just tasted like any other tiramisu - neither the miso or the chocolate came through, which I think was a missed opportunity. The only negative dish was the cheesecake: too much gelatin in the topping had given the whole thing an unpleasant texture, and the flavor wasn't good enough to save it. The table next to us got the sushi main course, and that looked like a great deal (assuming the sushi rice was properly cooked), but for what we ordered I wouldn't say it met the $65 value. The shrimp was truly fantastic! The rest fell short on the flavor and quality (particularly, the poorly cooked rice) I would expect at that price point. I've found that's pretty true to my overall experience at Perry's: some wonderful standout dishes that make your night, but also very uneven quality between dishes that can really undercut the experience. Gorgeous plating and friendly service as always! Despite what I said, I honestly do like them and I know I'll be back for happy hour/rotating specials again, but I think this is the first and last time I'll try their Restaurant Week menu. read more

Perry's is such a cute restaurant in Adams Morgan that's perfect for a date night or get together. My friend and I have made reservations beforehand and as a note, they do not seat the party on the rooftop unless everybody is there. There's also a second floor indoor area if the weather isn't cooperating. We share the Hamachi Crudo, which was absolutely delicious, and the fish was so fresh. My friend chose to get a sushi deluxe platter which she thoroughly enjoyed, and all of the cuts of fish were so fresh. I opted for the fatty tuna roll , salmon and avocado roll, and the flaming dragon roll? Overall, the quality of the sushi was very delicious, and there was a balance between the thick cuts and thin, small quantity of rice. The meals is on the pricier side coming out to around $60 per person, and we didn't even get alcohol, but the quality of fish is worthwhile. read more

Came here after a long bike ride and absolutely loved the rooftop vibe on a nice summer evening. All of the food was great! I thought the Japanese sangria was just ok--very refreshing but the flavor was lacking, imo. Service started out good, but we had to flag down our server after waiting 10-15 minutes for them to come back to take our order (to be fair we weren't ready the first two times). We also waited a very long time to be checked on again so we could ask for the check. Since we essentially had two servers (one was in training), this was a bit surprising. Again, while all the food tasted great, it was a bit pricier than I prefer for what I got--I think there are better places to go in this price range. I visited for the first time while they were offering the 40th anniversary special menu and it was phenomenal! Off of that special menu, I ordered the fatty tuna with uni, wagyu donburi, and miso cookies. Sometimes pre fixe menus leave you wanting, but this was more than enough food. In addition to the menu, I also split an udon carbonara which is a dish I would definitely go back for again. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the 20th century cocktail, but my friend loved it so I think it's a matter of preference. Looking forward to coming back! read more

A very elegant, upscale Japanese restaurant with friendly and attentive service (waiter was happy to take photos for us). Beautifully presented dishes, if overpriced. We came for one of their Saturday brunch (strict time slots; reservation required). They were gracious enough to swap out beef (and egg) for members of our group who have allergies. No extra charge. I got the original set. Nice salmon, miso soup, seaweed, tender beef, and vegetables. Yuju cocktail was very tasty. The matcha beer (all green!) was unique and wonderful. However, as such, the set is overpriced at $42. It's at best a mediocre Japanese bento box set. Nothing fancy. Sure, venue looks fancy and service is good, but the price is too high even by Washington DC standards. We've had plenty of high end Japanese food especially by Friendship Heights and Cathedral Heights. Much fancier bento boxes. Equally fancy venues. My only mistake was not coming here sooner. Dinner: LOVED everything. Tried: kabocha squash with burrata was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the garlic edamame dumplings were divine. Got the sushi platter too. Drag Brunch: Book it in advance! For some reason I didn't expect much from the deceivingly "simple" buffet, but everything was delicious and there was good variety, from some of the salads and sesame noodles to waffles and more. We had an excellent dinner last night at Perry's while on a trip to DC celebrating my wife's birthday! Perry's is upstairs in the Adam's Morgan area of DC which seemed to be a very nice little walkable neighborhood minus the rainy night we had! We were greeted by the host who was able to let us sit at the sushi bar as we wanted to have a little bit of an experience and get to watch the chefs. It was interesting watching all three and seeing some of the ingredients they used both for the food and decoration! All of the employees we dealt with were awesome, very personable and helpful. Our waitress did a fantastic job explaining everything on the menu and the specials to us! We both started with a bowl of Miso soup followed by our main courses. She got the Garlic Fried Rice with Beef Tenderloin topped with an egg, which was really good. Cooked well and very tasty! For me I opted to go with the Nigiri Omakase. We got to watch as the chef prepared each of my pieces of sushi in front of us. He then talked me through them all and about some of the flavors from the various toppings he used. It was nice to try a few different things that I normally would not have ordered most likely. Overall the fish was extremely fresh tasting, the right temperature and really wonderful especially when you factor in the price which was extremely reasonable! At the end, knowing we were celebrating a birthday, the waitress even brought out a small cupcake for us with a candle which was a nice touch! When we return to Washington DC Perry's will definitely be on the to-do list again as we had a great time with good food and great service! read more

For some of the best Japanese food in D.C. go to Perry's in Adams Morgan. It's a D.C. institution- it's been around for almost 40 years. But their chef is new and creating innovative dishes for their menu. My wife and I went for dinner on a Friday evening and the place was full (a good sign). Our meal was the best we've had in five years or so. Here's our experience. 1) Food: There wasn't a bad dish, but the standouts were the garlic edamame dumplings and the udon carbonara. I'll crave both. The shrimp katsu burger, roasted persimmon (a fall item), and the Pink Panther sushi were incredible. The sweet red bean cream monaka was one of the most unique desserts we've had and so, so good. 2) Drinks: The cocktail list is large, but we went with the Japanese inspired cocktails. If you love sweet (but not overpowering), order the Japanese Passion Sangria. It's very refreshing! 3) Service: It's impeccable. Our service has been with Perry's for most of its lifetime and knows the space well. Timing was perfect and he guided us through the menu with ease. 4) Space: It's on the second floor of a building with one large dining room, a long bar, chef's counter, and a rooftop. 5) Neighborhood: Adams Morgan is a fun area with lots of bars and restaurants. This review is for Perry's Drag Brunch on Sundays! I made the reservations for myself and a friend about a week before- it was a pretty easy process, but they do take a credit card over the phone. If you don't come on time, they will charge you, so be punctual! Once we got there, we waited outside with others until the doors opened at 10am. We were seated right away and told to head to the buffet before a line formed. The line was long, but was gone within 10 minutes. We had around an hour to eat before the show started, although of course you can get more food during the show too. The servers were constantly going around during this hour taking care of everyone. They took drink orders, cleared plates, brought coffee and water, and had singles on hand to provide change for the show. Everyone seemed happy to be there! The food was surprisingly amazing for a buffet. The presentation was beautiful and you could tell the food was made carefully. There was a wide spread of items. American breakfast items included scrambled eggs, bacon, tater tots, grits, and grilled potatoes with veggies. There were also American lunch foods like truffle grilled cheese, tomato soup (incredible), and Mac and cheese. Japanese items included an amazing smoked salmon, noodles, and a Japanese take on chicken and waffles. Again, everything was good and it was a diverse spread that had something for everyone. Now for the best part- the girls! The show was really amazing. It lasted for around an hour, and each girl performed twice for a total of six musical performances. The host, India Larelle Houston, took time to call up everyone who was celebrating something and gave them great personal messages, which was really touching but also somehow hilarious. For me, the highlight was the dancing skills of Whitney Gucci Goo, even though the death drops made me wince! Perry's has a great drag brunch for anyone, including large groups. Loved our Happy Hour experience here. Unfortunately we couldn't get a table inside and had to go to the rooftop. It's a nice rooftop but it was raining a little so the bar stools were the only available seating for walk-ins. There weren't enough stools and many were eating standing up. Reservations highly recommended. The Happy Hour deals were pretty good. We ordered the Shishito Peppers from that menu. It was OK, we wished it was more blistered or cooked in higher temp. My partner had discounted white whine and I had their Caipirinha Cocktail special which I really enjoyed(Brazilian Mojito like drink made with cachaca spirit). The highlight for us was the Udon Carbonara, it was absolutely delicious, I pretty much licked that bowl clean. We also had a Chirashi bowl and we were happy with our combo. I'm only taking off a star for a shortage of stools and the scary stairs going up to the rooftop. I'll most likely edit my review when I finally get to dine in their main dining. read more

DAYUM! Chef Masako Morishita has transformed this place for the better - glad there's so much more than just sushi (which is still good). The uni mac and cheese is one of the best dishes I've ever had in my life. We tried an off-menu katsu appetizer which was exactly how fried chicken should be served. The drag performers had beautiful outfits and the music was decent, but the show itself felt pretty minimal. There wasn't much dancing or stage performance -- most of the time the performers walked around the tables collecting tips. We were there for my sister's bachelorette brunch and she even had a bride hat on, but there wasn't much acknowledgment or interaction with her. Overall it was okay, but we were expecting more of an actual performance and crowd engagement. Definitely not worth the $60+ a ticket and plus they add gratuity to the bill without mentioning. read more

Delicious sushi in Adams Morgan! I finally made it to Perry's after having received a recommendation to come here over a year ago, and it was worth the wait. We started with pork gyoza ($13). Fragrant is the word that comes to mind. The skin was delicate, thin yet sturdy, and the filling was very balanced. The flavors of pork, ginger, and cabbage each came through clearly. Plus, it comes with five dumplings, which ensures that there will be some discussion, whether cordial or antagonistic, over who gets the last one. For nigiri, we ordered the Buri Toro (fatty yellowtail, $10) and the Unagi (eel, $9). We also got two rolls, the Phoenix (shrimp tempura and spicy tuna, $17) and the Chesapeake (crab crab crab, $19). Both of the nigiri were delicious and perfectly sized at two pieces (that's how rich it was!). The Phoenix provided an impressive contrast of textures with the crunchy tempura and the soft tuna, along with quite a burst of flavor. However, we both enjoyed the Chesapeake the most, which contained lump crab, crab stick, avocado, and masago. It's seriously the best sushi I've had in the last few years. I don't think I can quite give it five stars since the place isn't cheap! They know they're good and charge accordingly. But I am pretty confident I'll be back, and I plan to get the Chesapeake again. P.S. They have table seating, a sushi bar (where we sat), and just a regular bar. I recommend the sushi bar! You get to see the ingredients lined up like some sort of super fancy Subway, and watch the sushi chefs at work. read more

Well, this attracts a young crowd. I was definitely the oldest person here by twenty years. I was able to get a last minute reservation on the rooftop and I was happy I did. The rooftop area is beautifully done, complete with a bar area. The sushi was good but it cost a little more than your typical sushi joint. There were other delicious sounding menu items but I stuck with sushi. They do automatically charge a twenty percent service charge which I was not aware of and we were just a party of two. The interior of the restaurant is very nice and makes for a great hang with friends. read more

I came here for happy hour and was blown away by the service and food. The downstairs was very classy and we felt a little underdressed, so we decided to try out the rooftop bar which turned out to be a much more casual vibe that was more our speed. The sushi was great, but the chicken Karaage was the real standout dish and is definitely the best I've had in DC. The waitress was incredible, they had so many specials going on and she recited them all from memory with a ton of detail about each.
