I visited Perry's with some friends from out of town, and all I can say is that I will definitely be back. Their drag brunch is now one of my favorite memories of DC. I love this place so much!!! I came for dinner with a reservation for big group. The staff here are very attentive and friendly. Our server was fun! It was busy on a Friday night, but was a big space. We got to sit higher up in our own private area which was nice. My favorite things were Wagyu Beef Tongue Stew (special for the night) and Udon Carbonara. Everything was delicious tho. We got Chicken Karaage, Garlic Fried Rice, Uni Mac & Cheese, Garlic Edamame Dumplings, Perry's Ceviche, Chirashi Donburi, and one other special. Great casual, modern sushi spot. Not your traditional Japanese restaurant. Overall the food is good for a more affordable Japanese restaurant in DC. The Chirashi donburi gets you the most value and everything tasted fresh. Pro tip: if you don't like a certain fish or seafood (for me that's squid and octopus) then you can ask to get it without! Katsu burger was piping hot when it came out- nice and crispy. But, portion is small (with no sides). Uni mac was a solid mac and cheese but could not tell if it had any uni in it. Sushi deluxe and salmon lover are overpriced for what it is and you'd probably be better off getting the chirashi. Service was fast and nothing else particularly to note. read more

Perry's restaurant is absolutely incredible. The fish in the sushi is buttery and clearly high quality. The rolls are also well crafted and each element plays an integral part in contributing to the overall flavor rather than tasting like mush (an issue I have with some rolls). History of Present Indulgence: Been here for dinner and their limited-time trial breakfast. Physical Exam: Taste - Unique. Creative. Delicious. The chef/owner knows what she's doing, curating a menu mostly with familiar favorites from a Japanese menu, but with some select options that while combining some rarely paired flavors/ingredients, do so in a way that just makes sense. The Roasted Persimmon was a great combo of sweet, spicy, and savory. I never knew cheesy soybeans (edamame) were a thing I would ever crave until I had the Garlic Edamame Dumplings. The Uni Mac & Cheese was a flavor bomb. Adding uni to mac & cheese gives an already rich dish, even more umami and richness. I would only avoid this if you don't like the taste of seafood. The Karaage Fried Chicken is a familiar favorite with well-seasoned chicken fried in a light batter, with the Sunchoke Karaage being a nice vegetarian substitute. Though the Sunchoke Karaage I found a little bit too potate-y. That's more on me though, cuz I was imagining more of a vegetable similar to artichoke and not a root vegetable like a taro or potato. The breakfast they're running now is even better than the dinner we had. We each got our own set, which is such an authentic representation of a special Japnese breakfast set. There's cured salmon, wagyu beef stew, a mushroom/eggplant in dashi, a small slice of egg omelette, some miso soup, veggies, rice, and rice seasoning. The cured salmon is a plate you'll rarely find in restaurants here. It's like lox, but instead of sliced and put in a bagel, you leave the salmon fillet whole and cook it like regular salmon, but it has all the salty goodness and a crispy skin. On top of the set, there's the a la carte options, which I would recommend the Egg Salad Sando and the oh-so-Japanese Loaded Tater Tots which were some perfectly golden brown tots topped with kewpie mayo, some masago, and scallions. The one thing I thought was mid was the Japanese Pancakes. Flavors were good, but the pancakes themselves were a little dense and cakey, maybe a little overcooked. AND THE DRINKS. Definitely get a cocktail here. Just as creative as the food menu is the cocktail menu, thoughtfully using Japanese liquors in cocktail classics and unique drinks you can't find elsewhere. If you get a chance to do the breakfast, I highly recommend the Kaiju. Tequila, green tea, chocolate, and togarashi don't seem a naturally intuitive combo, but it works and every sip you're gonna get something new, something different. Service - Impeccable service starting with the host at the door. When we had our dinner, our server even got us the opportunity to meet the chef/owner. Everyone was kind, attentive, and gave good recommendations for first-timers. Ambiance - When you arrive at the entrance, there are these giant wooden double doors that make you feel like you're about to enter some swanky mansion. And indeed, when you first enter, you have to take these grand stairs up to the host. There's a lot of space between tables, which combined with the high ceilings, and natural wood/bamboo tones gives a comfortable dining experience. I hope to return when the rooftop area opens up again. I've heard great things about that. It definitely doesn't fit the rest of the vibe of the AdMo strip it's on. Assessment/Plan: This is one of my favorite restaurants so far in DC. The menu is creative, yet familiar. The food feels like a warm hug, and the drinks keep you on your toes trying to decipher every flavor note. You feel like you're getting a 5-star experience without paying the 5-star prices. This would be a great first restaurant to bring someone visiting DC. It's great for dates, it's great for catching up with friends, it's great for large and small groups, and the long bar I think makes for a great solo-dining experience too. read more

I think this is my new favorite happy hour place! We got a lot of dishes to share - 2 spicy tuna rolls (it was 2 rolls for $14), 1 spicy salmon roll, a crunchy shrimp roll. A katsu sandwich, a truffle grilled cheese, the Caesar salad, the garlic fried rice, a turnip greens dish, and some drinks. Our waitress was very friendly as well and the food came out pretty quickly! It sounds like they have a new chef who's trying out some fun dishes and they were all delicious!! Came to Perry's for dinner on Saturday and had a great time! We walked in around 6 without a reservation and although they didn't have any tables there was room at the sushi bar and the bar. My group of 3 opted for he bar and were delighted to find they have happy hour on Saturdays until 7pm!! They have some great happy hour deals including two sushi rolls for $14 and all of their cocktails are under $10 during happy hour. I had a California roll and a crunchy shrimp roll. Both were fab but especially the crunchy shrimp. To drink I had a capirhinia which was delicious. Our bartender was quick and food came out relatively quickly. We didn't go upstairs but they also have a nice rooftop. The atmosphere left a little to be desired. It's a little dark and dingy and there don't really play any music but the food and drinks were great. The garlic fried rice that uses the same rice for sushi could be a bit better though - this dish was just 'meh' - it was a bit more on the salty side than it should have been. The inside of the restaurant is rather a bit too dark, even early in the day, since they keep the windows covered with blinds. The sushi was one for those who seek out the best sushi restaurants. We had two types of Uni, salmon belly, toro, o-toro, and hotate. Second course was the garlic edamame dumplings, tamari dashi mushrooms and the daikon in almost a miso based broth. Each dish didn't disappoint with an orgasm of flavors. I went to Perry's for HH and really enjoyed it. They do HH daily from 4-7 PM at the bar inside and on the rooftop. I highly recommend the rooftop on a good day because it's a really nice view. The HH menu has a wide variety of drink and food choices and I really liked the shrimp burger and crunchy tiger roll. The service is good and everything comes out quickly. To celebrate a birthday, we went to Perry's Drag Brunch on a Sunday. Gotta make reservations way in advance, but definitely worth the wait! First, the buffet and drinks - lots of great food to choose from, all-you-can-eat (I made three or four trips to the buffet myself), and this includes desserts and salads and fruits along with breakfast-y foods and lunch items. I came during restaurant week on a Friday night. It was pretty spacious inside and had a decent amount of spots available. Our waitress was very attentive and did a great job recommending some of the menu items. I got the spicy salmon over crunchy rice with masago and avocado. There was a good ratio of spicy mayo to rice. My friend got the karaage fried chicken, and it was sooo juicy inside. The batter was crispy, bubbly, and chewy in a good way. It's a pretty big portion for an appetizer, good enough for 2 people. I had the pesto noodles, and it had shimeji mushroom, lemon basil pistachio sauce, prosciutto, charred corn, garlic chili oil, dashi. It came cold, but I think I've found my new love of combining pesto with Japanese noodles. The prosciutto on top was literally the cherry on top. For the yuzu bluberry cake, the cake was a little dry but the yuzu glaze helped. The cake wasn't too sweet, so the glaze really complimented it. Some of these items might not exist on the current menu, but it speaks volumes about how well-prepared and tasty the food is, and I will be back when I visit DC again! read more

~Celiac/Gluten Free Review~ Three of us tried this place out for the first time last night and unfortunately our experience with our waitress wasn't great which is the main reason for this review. We made reservations for 7 PM and was seated immediately. My bf is Celiac and has seen rave reviews and wanted to try this place out! We asked the waitress about items on the menu being gluten free and she proceeded to ask if "cross contamination would be ok". Someone that is celiac obviously would get sick because of that and this server was not very knowledgeable on this with her responses to us. She then asked us what we wanted to drink (alcohol) and only one of us wanted a Sapporo. She then proceeded with confidence saying "beer doesn't have gluten" and then after seeing our faces in response with "no beer has gluten"...she said "oh yea I guess beer has wheat". Btw she never gave our friend his beer he wanted and was nice enough to remove the charge on the receipt. Food: food was awesome! We ordered sushi and my bf picked whatever was gluten free and enjoyed it! My friend and I ordered two entrees which was the karaage (gf) and udon carbonara (not gf) which we both loved! I would go back but with a different server. This place is really nice for date night or a fun night with loved ones once in awhile. I give her the benefit of doubt that maybe it was really busy and they may have been understaffed. I just wished she made more effort in trying to make sure my bf would be okay with the gluten free options or at least talking to the manager to see if they could put word in to the chefs (because most gf places can do that). Disappointing is an understatement. We tried this place once in 2019 and heard since then there is a new chef and all these rave reviews so we went back last night. I have zero clue about why this place is so hyped. The food is poor quality and shoddily slapped together on the plate. I watched the waitress mix the low sodium and normal soy sauce together from different glass containers into a plastic container and then repour into the table side glass containers. The sushi here is pretty solid and the Karaage Chicken is a huge portion. The chicken was stringy but fairly tender. I was unable to finish it as it was such a large portion. Perry's came highly recommended by DC friends, but our experience there was subpar. We arrived on time but were not seated until 20 minutes after our 7:30pm reservation time. There wasn't anywhere to wait other than by the host stand or down a flight of stairs at the bar that didn't have a bartender. Our server said there were only three sushi chefs instead of four, so there would be a slightly longer wait time for sushi - we asked how long that would be and she said "15 minutes longer than usual." As it turned out, we had to wait a full hour for our food and one person's entree came out a full 20-30min before the others. The food was good, and the wait probably wasn't the chefs' or server's fault, but management should have reduced the number of tables seated given the staffing issue. Or we could have been brought some snacks while we desperately awaited our dishes. Instead, we just kept ordering more wine, which added up quickly and meant we were drinking on empty stomachs... not our best move, but in the moment it was either that or twiddle our thumbs for an hour and wait for dinner to appear. read more

The uni mac & cheese was interesting.. after our first bite, we would've liked it better with the uni and mac & cheese separate but as time went on, the flavors started complimenting each other more. The space is stunning, casual and nice zen from the day to day. The sashimi was amazing and was very exciting to have had that. However the dessert and service was lack luster. Understanding for restaurant week it's a limited menu but should not be limited in flavor. Had the chocolate pistachio mousse which was chocolate pudding consistency with a raspberry. No pistachio in sight. The matcha white chocolate tart was just that. A buttery shell, with white chocolate and matcha mixed together left to set in the shell. Service was not happening that night. There was a very long wait between 1st and 2nd course, 20+ mins. Tried to pay in cash and yes it was accepted however they did not have the correct amount to make change and would need to run across the street to do so. Arrived for winter restaurant week with my significant other. I chose the pressed fried eel for my appetizer. Was not what I was expecting, but it was delicious. I felt like the rice to eel ratio leaned more on the rice side, so I removed some, and it provided a better experience for me. The girlfriend got salmon tartar which she really enjoyed. She said it was amazing. For our second course, I chose the beef tenderloin garlic fried rice. This dish was very garlicky (according to the girlfriend), but it was amazing. I would come back for this. The girlfriend chose the omakase. I thought the sashimi was average, and she thought it was pretty standard. Still good. It came with a shrimp tempura roll with charred imitation crab on top. This was good. Finally, for dessert, I chose the sake chocolate cake. This was more like a brownie, and was my least favorite thing of the night. She got chocolate mousse with pistachio, and ended up cleaning her plate. She enjoyed it. Overall, great experience, delicious food, and left more full than expected. Our server was great, and provided amazing service. Not to the fault of the restaurant, but parking here is miserable. Circled around the neighborhood for 25 minutes until I settled for a nearby paid lot that was across the street. This was $30 for self parking. There was also valet next to the restaurant for $20, but the people and lot seemed shady. I saw they struggled fitting a car in their lot before me, which caused me to drive away. read more
