I had a one off poor experience in this establishment. There was a Halloween event on the pedestrian walk way in front of Pet Shop which I attended my kids and my kids friends. They were selling margaritas outside at this event. Me and another dad just finished our margaritas and decided to walk into Pet Shop with our empty plastic cups to see if they could make any to go drinks. We were greeted by Jessie at the empty bar. I told him "hey we have these plastic cups....any chance we can purchase to go drinks for the event outside." He said no...which was fine. But then he reached across the bar and snatched the cups out of our hands stating he could not let us walk out with the empty cups we came in with. He could have asked us to hand him the cups instead of grabbing it from us like that. We were stunned for a minute that that actually happened. So after that happened I asked if I can use the restaurant's bathroom. Jessie seemed annoyed...looked at us up and down and replied "the bathroom are for paying customers only." We took it as judgement as if the other dad and I were some kind of peasants. We ended up purchasing 2 margaritas at the bar in order to use the restaurant's bathroom. The margaritas were good and priced good($10 each). The business was empty. Wasn't like he was busy. The bartender Jessie was acting like an a**hole. You shouldn't work in the hospitality business if you lack basic customer service skills. read more

Came for the vegetarian food, but not sure I'll return. The space at the back is pretty open and there are quite a few tables, including nice size booths for groups. No table service so you order at the bar, which wasn't a hassle at all. As the night went on (8pm) the music got pretty aggressive and extremely loud. I get that it's a bar, but there were probably 30 people inside and suddenly you couldn't hear the person sitting across from you. The food consists of typical bar fare, but it's 100% vegetarian. I like the loaded tater tots - they're nice with a few jalapeño pieces, the savory "meat", and topped with creamy cheese. I've definitely had better wing alternatives and vegan ranch sauce was not good. Lastly, we tried the pet shop tacos and they were mostly void of flavor in a dry tortilla. If you're a vegetarian and looking for late night bar food, perhaps this will do the trick. If you're looking for a good dinner and a couple drinks in a super laid back environment, maybe not. read more

I came here for drinks with friends. It's a pretty spacious bar with plenty of standing room, as well as tables in the back. They played a fun mix of rock and r&b. The music got progressively louder throughout the night and it got a bit tough to hold a conversation. They have a small signature cocktail menu. I got the jalisco holiday. It was quite strong, but way too sweet for my taste. There was a pretty diverse crowd on a Friday night. We only stayed until about 10pm, so not sure what the late night scene is like, but it had potential for a fun night out. read more

Aye oh let's go! Todd-O-Phonic suggested the Pet Shop for our pre part for the screening of "Rock N Roll High School" up the way. What a perfect spot for a group outing. We arrived at 5pm and already we were all stealing stools from other tables. I had a huge crew coming in. I am what is known to people as the "Organizer" of events. I had the ball rolling on who was interested and Todd sent a list of options. Pet Shop is rock n roll, huge and is a vegan spot. (all the options for me) I am pescatarian but love eating some comfort vegan food. Everything on the menu is vegan. The Cubano was tempting and so were the vegan nuggs. But I ended up with the chicken sandwich which comes in three flavors. I decided on the stickiest, BBQ. It came with fries which I feel is more rare these days in NY. They always make you pay extra for fries in NY. My boyfriend got the Cubano. And he ordered for us at the bar. I love Allagash and he went for Labatt. It was nice that everyone could open their own tab at the bar. No Table Service. And therefore we didn't have any issues with splitting a bill. People who already ate could also come by and could get drinks. The music was a variety of rock n roll from punk to metal and everything in between. The crowd was pretty mixed but all seemed friendly. I would highly recommend checking this place out. If we were staying the night in Jersey City we would have made another stop for sure. Also some really fun merch available. The staff really was on it too. So friendly and took care of us. Definitely be returning when we are back in the area for shows! read more

This place has been on my radar for a while and I finally got a chance to give it a try. This area is usually bad with parking but I was lucky to find parking right away. When I walked in I was greeted and told I could sit anywhere I wanted. When my friend arrived we ordered our drinks. Ariana was our server and she was so nice and attentive. I ordered the Femme Fatale to start and it was pretty decent. My second drink was a grapefruit tequila drink and it was really good. My friend liked his desert rose drink. This spot is vegan so all things are veganized on the menu. For entrées I ordered the bacon jalapeño chicken sandwich and my friend ordered the pulled jackfruit sandwich. The sandwich looked like real chicken and also tasted similar to it with a little spice. My friend really enjoyed his sandwich as well. The bill came to about $80 total which wasn't too bad. Great service! The bar was packed all night, but we managed to get our food and drinks fast. The menu is all vegetarian with vegan options. We opted for "shareables" and the sweet & sour cauliflower is awesome. It has just a little bit of heat to it. They had plenty of live music on Thursday night with a great band playing upstairs as well as downstairs. Even though I've been here a couple times, I always feel a little lost when I come in as the process to seat yourself and order isn't the most obvious (sort of a self serve/table service hybrid establishment). Cocktails haven't been the best in my experience. I'll bet that's mostly bartender-dependent, but I only come to Pet Shop for reliable vegetarian and vegan food. I went here with a colleague for drinks and appetizers. We ordered the cheese curds (which were much better than the name would imply!), buffalo cauliflower wings, and the sliders. All of the food was really good. The cheese curds were basically breaded and fried mozzarella bites - they were good. I am actually vegan and didn't realize the place is vegetarian - not vegan - so the cheese curds and blue cheese for the buffalo wings were actually dairy, which I didn't realize until after the fact, but it's really my mistake because I was with company and not paying close attention. I'm sure I will live And will return - I'll just be careful next time to select menu items without dairy. read more

What a cool restaurant with a unique flair of eccentricity. Inside, the restaurant offers a feeling of mystery- an uncanny resemblance to a restaurant in The Village of NY. I was intrigued to say the least. The man who greeted us at the door was kind...upbeat. He offered dining in but we passed. We opted for takeout instead. I already knew what I wanted as I had already viewed the menu online. I was excited about a few of their dishes. Many restaurants cater to the general meat-eating population with a side offering of Vegan/Vegetarian options. Not Pet Shop...not at all. This place had all the bells and whistles of a premium Vegan/Vegetarian spot with a variety of delicious options that would even make the average meat-eater squeal with delight. I ordered the "bacon" fried "chicken" sandwich and it was amazing. It was crisp, full of flavor and sooo tasted like chicken. The fries that came with it were equally crispy and salted just right. Before selecting the "chicken" sandwich, I almost chose the "sausage" & peppers. The food was so good though and at about $14-15 for each meal, you betcha bottom dollar I'll be back for the sausage & peppers and the bratwurst and the shakshuka and the cauliflower wings...I could go on. I used to go here all the time because I loved the ambience of the place and cocktail options, but i'm coming to terms with the fact that this place isn't really it. this year the service has been dogshit. One bartender is kind, friendly, and great at his job, but the younger staff will look you in the eye 7x and still ignore you & your party on a weekend (not even that busy) unless you're there with a group of 6 or are friends with them. Entering Pet Shop you get a divey, yet elegant vibe dating back to the years of flappers and boot legging, no need to drink the swill out of a porcelain tub, they have plenty of great options: Kane Head High and Bells Two-hearted ale, even a Labatt Blue if you're up for it. Once again I ask myself, why is all the good stuff far from me?! I'll get the negative out of the way, the parking but hey it's Jersey City you know what to expect. Now all the good! The idea of it I adore! A vegan/vegetarian dive bar and restaurant in an old pet shop! Great idea ! The place is upfront about the fact they are a dive sort of bar and I love it! The service was great. I didn't get our waiters name (I do remember a Misfits forearm tattoo though) he was friendly, efficient and helpful with suggestions. He went out of his way to make conversation and we appreciated that. The food is not your typical vegan "health" food. We are talking comfort food at this spot and it's worth every calorie. We had the cauliflower wings which I loved because they weren't messy , if you want wings covered in sauce skip these . We both had the vegan sausage and pepper sandwich made from setian. Wow just wow! I actually was pulling it apart to inspect it because I swore it was meat! So good. The beer list was decent. A few good drafts on their rotating menu! We had tickets to a light show at Liberty Science Center afterwards but if we didn't I would have stayed here a bit longer. read more

I'm prefacing this review by saying the five stars is for the bartender Morgan. I came in on a Thursday night to a decent crowd. I've been to this bar a handful of times and it has a nice atmosphere. There is the upstairs which has seating at the bar as well as tables. The downstairs is nice as well and has a different feel to it. I've never eaten here but a friend did and said the burger she had was amazing I am writing this review to highlight Morgan. When I was there Thursday night, a man who was definitely drunk sat down aggressively next to me and stared at me and she immediately noticed and discreetly asked if I knew him and I told her no. She could tell he was over-served and after making sure I was fine, she denied his drink order but she did it very politely and quietly and kept it between the two of them. She was adamant but nice and professional. I'm 30 years old and have been to many bars and I don't know if I've ever seen as good of a server as Morgan. She really handled that situation so well that I genuinely feel a lot of bartenders could learn from her. She did everything a good bartender should do and the way she spoke to him was very dignified. I really hope management/owners know what a good employee they have. read more

I ordered the Buffalo Chicken & Cauliflower wings (both vegan) to go. Buffalo chicken ($14) was good (not amazing not bad just as expected) that came w/fries. Cauliflower ($12) not so much. Really nice atmosphere, the bar is near the entrance as you walk down you can sit at the booths or the long tables either at the back. There's something musty about this bar and not in a dive bar kind of way. The food was not good. I went to this spot blind, thinking it would be some next level vegan food. This food is so so so so so so overpriced. I'd pay any amount for good vegan food but this was subpar at best. I got the chickn Caesar salad and the chickn was dark and really hard to chew. Don't serve a salad for $15 with a tiny cup of dressing on the side and charge $2 for an extra. My friend got the portebella jerk burger and the bun was soggy and it tasted weird she couldn't even finish it. The cauliflower wings had no flavor and were so oily. The French fries were great but you can't really go wrong there. Thank goodness this wasn't my first time getting vegan food cuz I don't think I'd ever try it again. Also plastic cutlery and dishes is just weird for a place with formal seating. I also don't know why you need to open a tab if you're just getting food. There should be separate servers for people just getting food. If I took a date here I'd be a little disappointed. Music is way too loud if you're trying to tell a story you will be yelling the whole time. Go to veganized in New Brunswick. Same price and gourmet food and amazing service. read more

Perfect local bar (and so much nostalgia if you're a longtime JCer who remembers the actual pet shop that used to be there and the sweet man and his chihuahua who ran it). Jesse the manager and bartender is a great guy. Despite the somewhat dive-bar feel, they have a really good wine selection. The PS wine bar downstairs is cool, and the backyard area is awesome particularly in the afternoon (as the sun sets it starts to get a little more popular with smokers). They also have good local bands that place. We haven't eaten there, but it is a vegetarian menu - also a cute nod to the animals it used to serve. read more

My boyfriend and I love Pet Shop. The owner is incredibly kind and humble, and the bartenders are always super friendly. The drinks are great. Whether it's band night, drag show night, or just popping in for a drink, this is one of our favorite spots.
