So I am about 50 yo and my high school job was working at a per shop. I worked there for many years in the fish department ( my specialty) and interacted with many people when selling and educating people on my product. After having a decent wait for any employee ( in a deserted store 6 on a Saturday) I walked up to the counter and a nice man said he would get help. After another wait this girl and I think her trainee asked if I needed help. I told her exactly what I wanted and she starts asking me 20 questions like I'm being interrogated and actually said she wouldn't guarantee the fish I was buying ( one Cory cat fish 2 silver dollars, 1 separate tanks) because the catfish school in 5's ! While this is true to an extent, there are studies that show some of them like 5 or certainly isn't a prerequisite and they live fine alone ( they prefer 2) and the thought to add 5 new fish at one time is absurd and dangerous to the tank and new fish. So not only was she trying to up sell me and possibly harm my tank she put all 3 fish from 2 separate tanks in the same bag when I told her they were going in separate tanks. She then followed me up to the register to write on my receipt that there is no warranty on all the fish! I will never go there again for anything ever! I have 4 fish tanks and a dog and they will not get another cent of my money. I'll drive 15 minutes further to go to petsmart; they are much friendlier there anyway. This girl Brianna was arrogant, condescending, disrespectful and a little smart ass too. When I was leaving and told them my experience was hostile and said " have a great day!" Do NOT take your pup or dog here for grooming. I brought in my little guy in to be groomed and it had to be at least 95 degrees. All dogs were panting. Even though I had an appointment, they then proceeded go and place my pup in a back cage WITH NO WATER and leave him there for who knows how long. I immediately asked for my dog back and received to worst attitude from the employees. This place needs to be reported! read more

I have been using Nicole as our dog trainer for almost 2 yrs now for both of our dogs, starting at beginner classes, then advanced, beginner agility, clicker, canine good citizen and therapy dog classes as well as specialized and private classes. Very happy with pricing as well as results! And, everyone in the store we have gotten to know is very professional and helpful. Especially Love John, Kyle, Frank, Morgan. It is great to have a place that people know you and your dogs, and you are even welcome to simply come in and browse so you can socialize your dogs & practice behaviors with them in the store even when not in 'class'. read more

We were looking for a playmate for our ferret and had gone in to see if he would bond to any of them. The crew that helped us was absolutely amazing and so patient with us while we decided if any of their ferrets would be a good fit for our Wallace. I wish I could remember the names of the 3 ladies that helped us to give them proper credit but they were so great and you 3 know who you are! Sir Wallace and his new sister Lady Winifred are having a blast together and we are so happy to have added her to the family! Thanks so much for all the time and care. Grooming Staff doesn't seem to be dog-friendly. I will never bring my dog to be groomed there again. Razor burns under her ears and on her belly from too close shaving. Her fur was not well brushed and came home with tufts of fur falling out. So disappointed. read more

Writing a review for our pet training classes. But as a side note, I have to say I'm actually really surprised by the bad reviews, because we love the Petco in Lake Zurich and they honestly deserve a 5. Everyone is so friendly, we have been going here since this past August and we are familiar with the great staff, who recognize us and we have become familiar with the regulars and couldn't be happier to have this place nearby, our pet always looks forward to coming here with us and meeting other dogs. But this review is really for Morgan and the excellent job she has done in helping our group train our dogs. We adopted a Newfoundland/ Chow Chow mix from a rescue. Although he is very sweet, he was the most stubborn dog, and still can be when he wants to be. We initially looked into training but didn't take the plunge until we met Morgan one day shopping for our pet. We casually started talking to her while shopping with our dog, and we immediately took to her and eventually decided to enroll our dog right then and there and I'm glad we did! We are in our 2nd 6 week session and love that we are with the same pets as group 1, love that we have space within the store to practice and the backroom to let the dogs play when they're done studying. It's apparent that Morgan continues to take extensive workshops and advanced training that she shares with her class. The dogs love each other, we like our group and we continue to see all the dogs make excellent progress. Morgan has fostered a great environment in the classroom and we look forward to continue training our dog with her. Also the classes are very reasonably priced and we go on weekends which works with our busy work weeks. I highly recommend checking this store out. Also, our dog has been groomed here twice now with no problems either. I bumped into a co-worker randomly who just had his dogs groomed here too and they looked good as well. The aquatic department was horrendous. Signs were falling off, aquariums full of algae, aquatic plants browning and floating everywhere like aquatic weeds. Dirty. The only plus about this store is other petco in the area has dirty bathroom and surprisingly the bathroom here is cleaner than others, if they could only make the actual store better. You will not find anything extra here that you can't find at other petco's. read more

Went here with my son a few weeks ago to buy our first ever pet- a budgie. staff was totally unenthusiastic, it was a weekday mornin. we asked for someone who could tell us a little more about having a parakeet as a pet- they said we didnt have to get two, one was fine too. nothing about how they like company etc. i said we didnt know anything aout them, and the girl there said 'well you can take them to the vet to get their feathers clipped or watch a youtube video on how to do it." finally after 4 -5 weeks of having a budgie, we 'donated' it back, for adoption since refunds are not possible after 2 weeks. i wish: they had guided us better they had told us the approximate age of our parakeet had told us about avian vets in the area had told us where we could get feathers and claws trimmed' most of the employees are so disinterested. the guy we asked about adoption was nasty, and almost yelled at me saying "is this all he food you ve brought?""you are supposed to bring whatever leftover pet food you have at home." later, we did get better people to help us though.only thing is:please employ genuine animal lovers. otherwise, go here only if you know what you need. dont expect ay guidance. we returned our bird because we were feeling clueless about many things. if they had guided us better, we wouldnt have. anyway, no regrets because it had a good home with us. fingers crossed that it finds an even better one once it's adopted. this is the petco at Lake Zurich Il and there is a cute little budgie there up for adoption, with cage, perches and a couple of toys too! read more

This store has the WORST service ever. It's so inconsistent. Employees are rude & unhelpful. We had two hermit crabs die within two days of brining them home - when we went back into store to get replacements - the man basically accused my 11 year old son of killing them. He was about in tears as he already felt bad that they died. They obviously weren't very healthy when we brought them home if they passed within 2 days. My son has raised hermit crabs for 5 years - he is not a rookie. The man could not have been ruder or more insulting to both of us. Just obnoxious customer service. I don't care if I ever step foot in that place again! I"ve put a call into corporate this was so bad. read more

They groomed my 2.8 lb dog. Gave him a laceration, put ointment on it so I could not see the flap of hanging skin and told me he scratched himself. I checked it out when I got home more closely. He now has 2 stitches has to wear a cone and take antibiotics. Can't believe they lied... read more

As the owner of two dogs and two cats, I make frequent trips to my local Lake Zurich Petco. I had bought new collars for my two Shih Tzus along with a bunch of other items last week, and one of the collars was too tight on one of them. The packaging was still exactly as I purchased it, but I couldn't find my receipt. I just wanted to exchange from an xsmall to a small collar though and I thought that they would probably understand. They said that they can't because collars are highly stolen items. I was really offended, and it made no sense. I left the store with my my brand new packaged collar that I can't use in my hand. They lost a very good customer, and it wouldn't have cost them a dime to exchange it. Headed now to my new favorite pet store for today's and all other future pet related purchases. Chewy.com is awesome as well. read more

We bring our dog with us when we visit the store and also to the grooming department. The staff is always friendly. They give our dog cookies and some of them even remember her name. The ladies in grooming are very nice and when they are busy they make it a point to let you know they will be with you shortly. They are always polite. I don't know how they do it in there! Overall, we just love going there! read more

This store has been in the same location for many years and my family has used their grooming services for all of our dogs from our furry Sheltie to our super furry collie to our shitzus and our newest dog. Today, we used them for our Morkie who is about 10 months old. Simple cut on a sweet little dog of about 7LBS. We had ordered a nice tight summer cut and WOW, we have a little dog with the most uneven clip/cut with his belly burned in spots and his legs all different lenghths as well as his ears different lengths too! I phoned them and they said he was figgity when they were cutting him and that's why he looked "scruffy but he's cute". When I asked how they could charge me $45 bucks for this they started getting nasty and said he was bitting them too! he's a little tiny puppy dog who does not bite and after the entire "I could care less" reply from the grooming department I will NEVER spend DIME ONE at the Petco store there in Lake Zurich let alone ANY PETCO store! read more

For any dog owners considering having their pup groomed by the Lake Zurich PETCO grooming staff: I highly advise seeking an alternative service provider! My dog and I were treated disgracefully from even before stepping through the doors. While one of the employees courteously opened the door for us, he assumed my dog (who doesn't speak English and cannot 'use his words') would back up to avoid being crushed by the door and instead continuously slammed the door into his front paws as my poor dog sat their screaming. I should have ran back to my car as fast as I could at that moment. When I spoke to the girl at the front desk while checking my dog in I asked her to make sure that particular employee would not be touching my dog with a ten foot pole she then said, "well maybe it was just 'bad timing.'" She watched the whole thing with her own eyes and still defended him. Oh, and I don't think I mentioned that upon entering the grooming service department not one person said "hello" to me, they just stared at me and carried on working angrily. Aside from the horrible customer service, I noticed the next day that my dog was shaved far too close to his skin behind the ears. I noticed that because there was dried blood there from them nicking his skin. I also found similar marks around his belly. Because of that experience my dog thrashes in fear on any grooming table where a groomer is attempting to trim his paws. Do you and your dog a favor and stay far away from this grooming department. I won't even shop there anymore because of how we were treated. read more

This is an average Petco with the selection and prices that come with it. I am a dog breeder of working dogs so I frequent it and usually spend $200-$400 a month on high end food there for my dogs (I only use good dry dog food and they sell reasonably good food at fair prices). The employees are generally polite and very knowledgeable (but occasionally a bit condescending if you question their advise). The manager (I think it was the store manager but may have been a district manager since he was clearly in charge and not in uniform) is a jerk so hopefully you never have to deal with him. I went there around 5 or 6 pm on New Year's eve to buy a bag or two of dog food because I realized last minute that I was completely out and they would probably not be open on New Year's day. When I arrived all of the lights were on, there was no sign that said "closed", and there was no sign listing New Year's eve hours, so I thought I made it. I stood there like an idiot for about 30 seconds waiting for the automatic doors to open and the manager (I think) who was talking to the usual cashier walked up, cracked the door, and said "you have to come back next year". When I smiled (he was making a dumb New Year's joke, right?) and said "ok, are you open tomorrow or do I have to wait until the 2nd?" he just glared at me, said "come back next year", shut the doors in my face, and walked away . He ignored me as I stood there stunned while the regular cashiers glanced at me nervously between making eye contact with him (for job security I'm sure, as they know me on a first name basis and I'm sure would have at least been more polite and informative about the schedule than he was). I ended up at Walmart and tried out a bag of Ol' Roy High Performance as a cheap filler food since it didn't have animal digest and had meat as the 1st ingredient. It gave my dogs HORRIBLE gas on New Year's eve (same night!) and has terrible reviews, so I can't even endorse it as a filler when better food isn't available. I ended up at the grocery store on New Year's day buying them raw chicken for $0.99 a pound (yeah yeah the raw diet can be healthy and cheap, but what a mess!) I am upset with the kind of treatment I received at this Petco. I was nice, realized I missed the closing time, and smiled at what I thought was meant to be a funny comment. I was always buying convenience by going there since the store is so close to my house. I have since found that I can save between $5 and $10 per bag of dog food by ordering it online (including free shipping), which will save me $20 to $80 per month. Needless to say, with the online stores for my regular food, Pet Supplies Plus in Buffalo Grove for reasonable prices on toys/chews, and Page's Healthy Paws in Lake Zurich for high end stuff that's not available in chain stores I now have no reason to go back to my local Petco given that they don't offer convenient hours and have rude management. The selection for cat and reptile products pales in comparison to local places and other chains too. Sorry, but "at least we're better than Petsmart" isn't good enough anymore given the rude service when I needed help. You just lost a $500+ a month for general dog products account (food, treats, chews, etc.)! Goodbye Petco, and good riddance! read more

I was so surprised. ... with the bad reviews for petco Lake zurich. They are nice, helping my son with fish, hamster and aquarium. Give us suggestions, choices and explain how and what he has to do. The middle age guy Boss from aquatic, was so nice, helping alot, explaining a lot about the aquarium, and the fish. We become customer more then 8 years. Never have complaint or rude from the stuff. We love our petco Lake Zurich. read more

Dog trainer Nicole is AMAZING! We have been through multiple trainings with one of our dogs at Petsmart and thought our trainer there was wonderful... until we met Nicole! She is extremely patient with the puppies (and owners), professional and manages the class time very well. We learned many tips and techniques that we did not come across in the other classes we have taken. Her energy is always calm and she uses her training in every situation, whereas other trainers I have seen get frustrated easily. She also took the time to answer all gazillion questions we had each week. If you are not sure which location or trainer to sign up with, I would highly recommend one of Nicole's classes. read more

So, this place is a joke as far as "grooming" goes. If you need a place to drop off your dog to get a bath and "brush", and have them come home shedding hair like there is no tomorrow, this is your spot. I asked for a de-shedding groom, which never happened, so I ended up getting charged with just a bath and a brush...for $40. I don't think they brushed him more than 5 seconds. I spent an hour, brushing and vacuuming my dog at home, and their excuse was that the girl who groomed him was an apprentice. Well, I'm pretty sure that an apprentice gets their work overseen by a higher-up before the work is considered acceptable to him or her. I mentioned to the "manager" that considering the breed, their undercoats are being shed out, and needs to be brushed out. Her excuse was, again, that she was "new". Sorry, but does the average person NOT know how to brush a dog? When u see hair still coming out, do you say, "done!"?? Any idiot knows how to brush their hair...what special talent is required here?? I'm floored with the insanity of this. They said I could bring him back for another brush, but why would I? Clearly it wasn't done right in the first place. Plus, I was done. Never bringing my dogs there again. read more

My family and I avoid this place at all costs. I'm really not sure what happened to this location. This location USED to be great... and by "used to", I honestly mean about 15 years ago. Since then, it's been on the decline. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS HORRIBLE. I've HAD to go in there at times when Petsmart is out of the dog food that I usually purchase. Trust me, I wasn't looking forward to it. If I had a question, no one could really help me. No one was ever really friendly.. and if I asked for help, it seemed like I was just a bother. Once during a visit, I had asked for a particular location of dog food within the store. Instead of the associate helping me, he just pointed in the general direction. I looked for it for about 10 minutes and returned to him twice asking for his assistance before he finally decided to help me. The worst part? He had directed me to the completely WRONG area of the store. He was not helpful or friendly. All of the employees act like they just don't want to be there and I've noticed time and time again that employees are always on their cell phones at the register instead of proactively trying to assist their customers. This review is not based on one, two, or several experiences... it's based on many, many, many experiences over 15 years being a LZ native. As I said, this store used to be awesome.. The grooming staff at the Lake Zurich location is extremely rude, in particular, the elder lady with dark hair should not be part of the staffing team. Upon arrival, I was NOT greeted by her; however, she did manage to ask me, with attitude, "What are you here for?" Hmm, I thought to myself, "To get myself groomed?" What the hell did she think I was there for?! She could have used a good grooming herself. I had also scheduled to have my dog shaven, but was told by her, "We don't have time." Really? I called and confirmed to have my dog shaven earlier in the day so is that not what appointments are for? Most importantly, another dog waiting to be groomed was evidently too close to her and jumping around, and what did she do? She rolled her eyes and scooted the dog away. Lady, if you don't like dogs, then why are you working at Petco? I advise anyone with a dog: PLEASE DO NOT GET YOUR DOGS GROOMED AT PETCO IN LAKE ZURICH. The staff isn't so friendly and after my experience, I did not witness the grooming staff being dog-freindly either. read more
