My 7 year old Westie was just groomed at the Petco in Lake Zurich. He looks FABULOUS! He just received one of the greatest cuts of his life, I couldn't be more pleased. (His new stylist was Liz.) I arrived to pick Jax up from his appointment and I was a bit early, I watched his groomer, (Liz) finish and perfect his new style, again she did a fantastic job. This Petco truly has a great staff; they are all hard workers and I feel very confident in trusting their expertise in pet care. I purchased some new dog food and was advised by a man who knew almost everything about dog nutrition. The manager was also very helpful; I had a couple coupon that's the cashier was having a difficult time applying and he promptly attended to and corrected the issue. Took my dog for bathing and grooming appointment to the Petco in Lake Zurich. The idiot groomer(guy) dropped on his butt and tried to approach my dog head on while hold his noose(leash). This idiot's facial expression was obvious that he was already scared , and tried to slide his butt approaching with his leash in front of my dog . My dog naturally got scared of this idiot and naturally bit him. Then the idiot started screaming , OMG your dog bit me. I was shocked by how unprofessional and idiotic this groomer at Petco is. If you're scared and don't know how to approach stranger dog properly, then definitely you are in the wrong profession and working at the wrong place. They refused to service my dog. read more

I decided to get help with clipping my kitty's claws. Tried everything. It's only $15 to get them done, which to me is worth it. So I had an appointment at the grooming center, and you have to bring the rabies certificate. It's time to leave and the certificate isn't where it should be. So I tried to call and got voicemail. Really. So you can't call if something g happens and you'll be late??? I didn't know what else to do so I went anyway. With traffic I was 20 min late. Then waited at the counter until the groomer decided to come out. She walks out and looks at her watch, then at me, all judgy. So I said I tried to call but it went to voicemail. She says well it's too late. Ok, I get that but since she's being judgy I repeated myself, slowly this time so maybe it would get through. She repeats again how late I was. Fine, so I'll reschedule. Then she says no ma'am you don't need to ever come back. Really? So I'm kicked out? I told the store manager and they said since the grooming was separate he couldn't do anything. Ok, I don't need to buy my cat supplies here either then. I admit I was irritated with their phone system and I was late. But that is not how you handle that situation. Very unprofessional and I'm kind of glad, I wouldn't want that woman touching my babies with an attitude like that. read more

If anyone goes to the wellness center at VetCo with Dr. Jessica Smith, do yourself a favor and stop. My girlfriend just had the worst experience there and it left her in tears. I don't know where to start. 1. My girlfriend came with her dog Flex to get an allergy shot, she usually drives to Lisle, but with our vital care reward program we assumed we would save money from the drive. This is a shot she has received for years. Dr. Jessica smith kept on trying to pressure her to get her on a new set of expensive food. She than decided to make comments about my dog that I had bought there and started making fun of his name, and how she thought it was a stupid name for him. She than commented on his teeth, my dog served in Afghanistan, the condition he was kept it wasn't the greatest the surgery that he needs costs 10's and thousands of dollars. My teeth are rotting and I don't have money to fix mine. This type of shame is disgusting, if you care about animals you care about people. This is just guilt shaming people that are trying to do the best they can. 2. She overheard dr. Jessica Smith YELLING and taking a condescending tone at an employee over how she shouldn't feel entitled to a day off because she just had 5 days off for the holiday. I'm sorry it is not my business but you do not yell at any employee in front of a customer. Right after my girlfriend was shocked because right after she yelled at this employee she walked in the room and acted as if nothing happened. 3. I am part of their vital care rewards program, I did not know that to add a second dog you had to pay an additional fee. I was never told this over the phone when I called, so our bill was higher than anticipated. Even though during check in it was stated that the exam fee would be waived because of our membership. This is our personal experience, obviously I'm aware that might not be the case for everyone else, but to know that my girlfriend was in tears and appalled at what she experienced I felt the need to share tbis with everyone and to be wary of doing business. I will cancel my membership and tell everyone I know to avoid using this service in the near future. read more

Yelled at for FOLLOWING directions: I work for a carrier service. When I get to a store to do a pick up, I look at the instructions that the store wrote for how I'm supposed to do the pick up. This Petco wrote that I should enter through the front doors and - exactly this in all cap: "NO NEED WAITING IN LINE." That was followed by other instructions. But it was clear that the carriers do not need to wait in line. When I walked in, the cashier was helping somebody. Because I didn't want to be rude, I stood to the side and just waited. The cashier, who was a man, looked at me and yelled very, very loudly, "Get to the back of the line!" I said, "Oh. I'm sorry, but I'm not a customer. I'm from..." and I stated my carriers name. He replied, "I know!" And once again yelled at me to get to the back of the line. Once I was in line, he looked at the person he was ringing up and said, "Who does she think she i?" The woman who was in line in front of me, looked at me and apologized to me that anyone would talk to me that way. To be clear, I do not mind waiting in line. As a matter of fact, I would prefer it. When I walk in and walk to the front, I worry that the people in line are going to be upset with me. At the same time, though, I need to follow instructions. That said, he would not have told someone from UPS or FedEx to get to the back of the line. I have seen UPS walk in there and just pick things up. My point is this: 1.) The store should write up their instructions to the carriers the way that they mean it. If we are to wait in line, write that. If we are not to wait in line, write that. 2.) The store needs to communicate to their workers with their policy for carriers is. That way the workers won't act ignorant. 3.) No worker should ever yell at anyone in their store. And they should never talk to another customer about someone else in their store in a rude, ignorant way. read more

We're lucky to have professionals such as Liz offer their skills & patience to handle our pets grooming needs. Grooming dogs & especially cats is extremely challenging work, as every animals demeanor will be different. I brought my 8+ yr old cat in for his first "haircut" ever, as far as I know. Yes, he was stressed & unhappy for a short time, I get stressed when I have to get a haircut. But the next day, he looks great, I can tell feels better, & no PTSD from this appointment. The vetco Clinic here is wonderful, the groomers and staff are lovely but the man with the brown hair who is either in his 50s or 60s with the gruff voice needs to go. He is rude, abrasive, dismissive and overall a giant jerk. I will continue going to this location for the vet and grooming, but because of him will not be shopping here ever again. I went in to pick up a product I ordered online at the store. The sales person suggested I get vital care premiere to save a bit of extra money and it was free for the month. If I didn't like it, I could cancel it at anytime. While its true they allow you to cancel it, THEY WILL NOT STOP BILLING YOU UNTIL AT LEAST 1 YEAR OF PAYMENTS. I contacted customer support and they said that was the policy and they would talk to people at the store not to sell it like that anymore however they said they would not stop billing me until the year was up. Would not recommend, signed up for Vital Care and have had nothing but problems, and always ask to pay more. Employees are clueless when it comes to policies and procedures, they do not even follow them. When you have righteous anger because they do not follow their own procedures they blame the customer. Management is rude and not helpful. In order to use their website you agree to their terms and conditions, buyer beware you sign away all your rights, they are responsible and accountable for nothing. Corporate is just as bad, call center in another country, ask for a manager and if you are lucky in an hour or two you may get someone in the United States. Grooming calls go unanswered, and I have even witnessed an employee sneek a smoke outside the door go in and start grooming a dog without washing her hands. She smells like a cigarette factory all the time. Really gross. Not worth all the drama and aggravation just to get simple customer service. read more

I have been visiting this Petco for 24 years and have always been pleased with the product that they carry and the staff. I only have two complaints. Well, actually I think I am picking nits: 1. It seems that they continuously move around the product, almost as if they are forcing us to do more browsing. :) 2. They don't always have the type of dog food that I buy for my dogs. Recently this store began again a customer loyalty program where you will receive a free bag of food after the purchase of eight. Brittany is the most well educated and easy going aquatics expert I've ever talked to. I came in worried about this baby turtle I had just been gifted and was so stressed about how to take proper care of him and she not only eased all my stress but educated me about best practices and dieting and everything that goes into being a good pet owner. The one time we went and used the restrooms, they were kind of horrendous. There were no locks on the womens' room stalls, and things were falling down. I'd avoid them if you can. In terms of the store, I've had some of the staff members be slightly haughty and rude, and while I find it obnoxious, I recognize that people like this exist in all manner of retail stores, and I take them with a grain of salt. I've never had anything happen that was so terrible that would dissuade me from coming here. As opposed to some other Petcos, I've found the staff here to be knowledge - I've had someone from another Petco recommend an "additive free food" as the primary food for our cat stricken with cancer. 2 weeks later, when I realized what we bought, I was furious. I went to my local Petco, and one of the managers (I think his name is Kyle), was incredibly upset about us being given such incorrect and terrible advice. He allowed us to exchange all of the extra cans we had for some ACTUAL FOOD. KNOW THAT THE APPLAWS BRAND "FOOD" ISN'T A COMPLETE DIET - IT'S SUPPLEMENTAL ONLY! Thanks to Kyle for helping us to take care of our cancer-recovering cat. She's cancer-free, but lost a ton of weight and become very picky. He said we could exchange anything she didn't like for something else - and we appreciate his helpfulness. read more

Read all reviews posted. Never take your dog here to get groomed. In fact, don't shop at Petco. This past Saturday, I scheduled a grooming appointment for today. I used the online system. It let you choose the day and time and told you what times were not available. I chose a time immediately after work because no later times were available. I did note all the appointment times before mine were available. The process was a pain in the butt yet I muddled through it. On Monday, Petco sent me an email asking me to click a link and confirm the appointment. I did. Today, I drove the half hour to Petco across crowded roads that are tore up due to construction. I arrived ten minutes early. I was greeted with, "Oh I tried to contact you. This time won't work for the appointment." The grooming manager told me she tried to contact me earlier. She said she wanted to take the dog earlier in the day. Two issues with this. First, the online scheduling system asked me what time worked FOR ME and told me the time was available. One would presume it took into account the groomers availability. Had she gotten a hold of me, I would not have been able to do the appointment earlier which is why I scheduled it as I did. Second, she used my "profile number" to contact me. The scheduling system asked for a contact number. I gave my cell phone. She did not call my cell phone. She said the system does not give her that information. She called my wife's office number (supposedly). The receptionist assures us there were no calls from Petco today. The grooming manager also claims she texted me at that number which is a landline. After several rounds of expressing my displeasure and her giving her excuses, she told me I should call corporate and complain. Yes, this is how I should spend my time. I told her it was her job to inform corporate. She said she had. So, implicit in her statement, Petco corporate cares as little about my time as the grooming manager. Lots of places to get a dog groomed. I only was going here because our regular groomer is on maternity leave. Lots of places to buy pet supplies. I suggest you give your business to people who respect their customer's time. read more

The cat had a cone of some sort on its head it fell off the table hitting his head on everything while the women stood there watching him! Staff is inconsistently friendly. Depends on the day and the person. I can say that from a lot of experience, I'm here 2 - 3 times a month. They have a legitimate cat shelter working out of a room there. From my understanding, Petco has partnered with a local cat rescue and allowed them to use this room to rescue older cats from kill shelters. Whether or not they are paying rent for this space, I do not know. This kitty room, as I like to call it, is the sole reason I frequent this particular petco and give them almost all of my business. Based on what I have been told, several members of the Petco staff have adopted some of these "unwanted" kitties themselves after seeing them in their cages months after months. I've found, Petco in general, doesn't have the best selection of cat food, but it's decent. If only they sold my kitties favorite dry food, felidae, I would do all of my kitty shopping here. Dogs are without a doubt Petco's favorite customer, though, with enough dog beds and puppy jackets to choose from you feel a bit like you're in doggy heaven. (Or, a human dog Mommy's heaven.) Especially considering the massive dog treat bar they have in the middle front of the store. This place is always promoting cat/dog charities which I find to be admirable. If you can get past the dryness in the majority of the staff's personality, you will find, they really aren't that bad. Their efforts to help animal charities could be slightly more successful, though, if they asked for help with a genuine smile. read more

Overheard asst. manager complain about a women who found out her class for her dog was cancelled because the trainer was ill. His comment was "if she read her f'n email she world have known, what an idiot" I as well had the same class scheduled, without notification. Renee calls out we have another one who claims they did not get the email. Though John, Frank, Ryan, Nicole and Megan are awesome. Some of their lower staff need to go. Pure rudeness, pampas and arrogant employees with no clue for customer service. They told me they owed me nothing for failure to notify of a class cancellation and I could just leave. Hey news flash. An I'm sorry something happened and not sure what happened with the email that should have been sent. Is there a way to make it up to you, would have been a great start. Instead we don't have to do anything for you was the response from the greasy long asst manager on duty and Renee, the could not care less cashier. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

However, I got tired of making futile attempts to change the designation. I have been a customer of this Petco for well over a decade -- essentially purchasing all of our pet needs here. I have grown to know the staff very well, and I have always found them friendly, knowledgeable, and most helpful! I have come to consider them friends, and look forward to my visits. Our current Mastiff puppy, and past dogs have adored the staff members and managers, as well -- to the point that I am always in danger of a dislocated shoulder when they realise that we are visiting Petco. This Petco has an extensive range of excellent pet foods, equipment, supplies, and toys for virtually any pet. They offer superb services in "positive/force free" training classes, which encompass an array of offerings from 'beginner' puppy obedience classes through CGC certification, and introduction to Rally and Agility. The trainers, Morgan and Nicole are highly experienced and produce outstanding results. I have only recently utilised the grooming services, and have been very pleased with the outcomes. Contrary to other (earlier) reviews, the entire facility -- including the lady's room -- is very clean, and I have never had the slightest problem returning or exchanging an item. read more

I've always had such a great experience here especially with grooming! My dogs have been seeing Elizabeth for 3 yrs now I travel to the lake Zurich location now just so my dogs can see her and trust me it's well worth the drive! She always finds time to fit my dogs in since I'm very last minute at times! She always has a smile on her face and very welcoming which makes me feel safe leaving my dogs there! Called and confirmed hours are until 9pm. Went into store at 8:30pm and walked back to a fish department that had all the lights off. Asked of I could get a few fish and was told the department was shut down for the night already. Actually it was more of an audible *sigh* and a moan about them already being shut down I guess flipping the light switch and doing your job would be too much to ask. The tanks looks dirty, diseased and disgusting anyways. No wonder they can't turn over their inventory at all. I left without purchasing my cart full of other dog food and accessories and won't be returning to this dump of a store that should not be affiliated with Petco. read more

This store should honestly be closed. The animals look like they're in terrible condition. I came in to look for a fish and almost all the tanks had dead fish in them. I asked an associate why that is and all she said was is your guess is as good as mine and walked away. WHAT?! I would highly recommend not getting your pets or pet needs from here. I walked in and was immediately bombarded with questions about my puppy. They tried to seem helpful and showed me to the food I was looking for, when we found it and I decided to reach for the puppy food, she said "that isn't the one you showed me ." Girl calm down! She also questioned how I took care of my dog, even AFTER she saw that I purchased very expensive, high quality food for her. I actually had several really pawsitive (ha) experiences here, specifically with the employees. I went in recently on 3 separate occasions and it was great each time, in that the employees were super helpful. One time a girl helped me carry stuff out to my car on a day where there was a crazy storm. Each time I went, it was a different employee that made an impression on me. I want to give a shout out to the manager Brad who was very courteous and helpful about a cat food inquiry I had. All in all, this is Petco, so their prices are high and their selection is just okay, but that's a chain for you. I have visited this store about 5 times and never fails here, one of the managers followed us and continued to observe our movements as we browsed dog and cat food, it only stopped once i used their restroom which is dirty , without paper towels and had spider webs around the door. I would not recommend to visit this store specially during the early morning hours. read more
