I visited this location a few days ago to get worms for my gecko and I also had a few questions regarding humidity for my reptile's tank. The employee there Ron was super friendly and knowledgeable. I have to say that this was my first time visiting this location and I was blown away by the selection of products and pets in their animal department. Yestephany in dog training was unprofessional rude amd condescending . I had been to many puppy socials with my puppy and although this one was free I felt it was very unhelpful. She was super judgmental and questioned how I handled my dog. She also didn't even pay attention to the dogs and was taking to perspective customers trying to get more business. This store had an item listed on their website for $4.54. I went to the store to buy it, but, the price for the exact same item was $10.99!!! I spoke to an employee working on the floor about the price discrepancy. She sighed, rolled her eyes and said I had to have the price fixed at the register if petco.com shows that price. I "had to," not they! I said I should think they would check and fix the problem, not give the customer an assignment. Acting as though I had failed to understand her perfectly clear order, she said, "Uh, you gotta tell her; I can't do nothing." So, I went to the register to buy the item and explained it should be sold for the advertised price of $4.54. The casher sniffed at me and told me I would have to show her the petco.com price online. I had to prove I wasn't lying?? Anyway, I went to their website and showed the casher the price. She grabbed my phone and just started typing on MY PHONE!! I asked her "What are you doing with my phone?" She didn't even answer or explain, and when I asked again, she repeated something like I had to prove the price if I wanted to get it for that price, scoffing her sour-puss little head off. They made me do homework to buy their item! The Petco employees acted as though I was trying to pull a fast one, and like they were doing me a favor to correct the price! What an annoying experience! If you go to this store, please research prices on Petco.com in advance and don't forget to bring your smart phone with you! Ridiculous!!! Sounds like the old "bait and switch" routine. They should be reported to the Better Business Bureau and Dept. of Consumer affairs. If I hadn't needed the Pill Pockets for a sick pet, I would have dropped the item on the floor and walked out. Worst petco I've ever been to. Customer service is awful and I always have to wait to get help in the back - whenever I then go to the front and tell them I need assistance they always tell me to go to the back and don't believe me when I tell them no one is there to help. Really miss the petland discounts as this is a recurring issue I have with this location. There's a few nice people who have helped me but overall disorganized and some attitude from others. I go here usually to just get some toys so toys from my King Charles dog. They have a pretty good selection for toys, beds, collars, and tags too. The engraving machine to create the dog tags is really simple and not that expensive. Recommend is you need anything pronto for you pet. read more

The groomers here are the best. Brought my elderly beagle to another grooming salon when first moving to NY and she was traumatized after her experience. Tried this Petco next time and Lucy had such a better experience. The groomers are so sweet and gentle with her. The main sales tactic at this location is to shame people into feeling like they are bad pet owners, so that they will buy what the clerks recommend, regardless of their Vet's direction. This happened twice for me yesterday. Once regarding food, and the other regarding training. The clerk used language which focused not on my dogs needs, but on how poor the advice of my vet was, and how sticking with the recommendation of my vet was bad for my dog. My vet and I worked closely to develop a home made meal plan for my dog; it was based on his specific essential nutrient needs and calculated basil metabolic rate. My vet recommended a commercial backup dog food based on the interviews of the brand's nutritionists, and a review of the company's food safety record my vet performed, personally. The clerk also insisted that my boyfriend had wasted his money on the dog trainer we hired, without knowing what my dog is being trained for, or who was doing the training- stating that Petco's training was better and only $99. While I cannot attest to the quality of their training, I do know that they do not offer the service animal training my dog enrolled in. This kind of shame-relief sales tactic likely works on some pet owners, but hopefully being aware of it will make it less successful. read more

I needed a conditioner for my dog her hair gets rather tangled. The conditioner smelled nice. But it didn't help detangling the dogs hair which is a little matted. I also bought a little brush with bristles to brush out the dogs hair. No luck. I think when it gets hotter I will just shave off the hair like I did before then allow it to regrow this time making proper sure I comb out my dogs hair each time so she doesn't get matted! read more

I love this Petco in on 86th street & Lexington so much! It has lots of different selections of food for your pets and other great items for pets like furniture, bowls, cleaners, teeth cleaners, eye cleaners, ect. The Petco workers are very nice and helpful. There is a very nice gentleman name Neil. I do not know his last name, but he is such a nice guy and he loves my little dog name Apollo. My Apollo is a mini poodle and he crazy about Neil. Neil always gives him treats and lots of love. Neil is always ready to help and share important information about dog food and treats. He is so helpful and l just all around great guy. He is the I always look for if I need help. Love him! Also, there is a groomer name Kevin that works there and he always does an awesome mini grooming on my little Apollo. Kevin is kind and treats Apollo very nice. Kevin and Neil are two of my favorite workers there and they both are super awesome! read more

Without fail I am insulted when I go to this Petco. My dog is 7 years old. He has been eating the same brand of food his entire life. He has always been very healthy. Our vet recommends his food to us. Every time I buy his food at Petco the employees there try to get me to purchase something more "natural". They are super judgmental and make me feel like a bad pet owner for purchasing the food that my vet recommends. I will take the advice of a vet over a random Petco employee any day. read more

The manager here is RACIST. He's pudgy, Hispanic (Ironically...), and probably in his mid to late 20's. What can I say? He's terrible. Everytime I have the misfortune of being attended by him I am interrogated and forced to show him pictures of cages and pet supplies previously purchased before I can purchase any pet. Very rude... especially considering the fact that I have witnessed on several occasions other people (White Customers) purchasing the same pets without any questions asked at all! It's so difficult for me to purchase pets from this store because of the extreme interrogation, it's very unprofessional. I obviously wouldn't spend $600 on two pet birds just to bring them home and mistreat them. He's very ignorant and racist, the staff here really needs to be changed. The cashiers are rude as well, very grumpy and unenthusiastic. Oh, and this one time I wanted to purchase a pet chameleon from here and I left empty handed because I didn't have a picture of the tank I bought on my phone to show the manager. Also, everytime I asked him for feeder fish or crickets for my pets he would purposely go and attend other people first when they obviously came to him after I did. I hate going here now because of this. Petco please change the staff at this location, plenty of money is lost because of their ignorance and racism, particularly from the idiot manager. This review is for grooming services only. They did an awful job giving my dog a grooming. A beautiful shih tzu came out looking like a naked mole rat. In addition, the staff is beyond unfriendly. They also claim the appointment will take 2-3 hours when 5 hours later they still are not finished. I had a bad experience the first time and decided to give them another try. So I got there pick what I wanted and when I got to the cashier I didn't have enough fund so when I ask for one of the item to be taken off only the manager knew of the process and there was only one manager on duty helping a customer they had me wait for more than 1/2 hour even after I told them I needed to be somewhere. Hate this place and especially the "trainers" they bring in!! We took our 11 week old puppy today (August 25th, 2018) for their puppy playgroup and arrived 5 minutes early. I asked the trainer if where we were next to was where the puppy class was. She said "yeah but you're several minutes early you need to wait". I said, "yes that's fine - can I just ask a question please? He's only 11 weeks old so is it ok to bring him? - he is up to date on vaccinations". She said "well the other dogs are not here yet so we don't know". Such a bad attitude and just unhelpful! I think they should know in general whether it is safe for an 11 week old or not. Then when we showed our vaccination record she said it was not good enough because it did not meet their specific requirements. So, we left, after carrying our anxious puppy 10 blocks there for the class. It's stressful enough trying to socialize a puppy in Manhattan without people being rude. They also have some pretty unhelpful staff - I asked where the treat pouches were, and they just told me they were at the other end of the store by the door and that I could not miss them (where I had just been). I went back to look for them and still could not see them. The staff basically refused to come and show me where they were!! Insane. Their prices are way higher than Amazon and you get a better service with Amazon too - stay away!! read more

This review is for their grooming service, in particular Johnna. She's been grooming my 4 year old mal shi basically since he was born, and she's done a wonderful job every single time. She's also been incredibly accommodating to my crazy schedule every single time. My dog always walks out looking stellar, and goes crazy with joy every time it's his turn to see Johnna again. We're sadly leaving town soon and parting ways, but I would highly recommend Johnna to any pet parent. read more

Sometime when we look for a cheaper price it comes out more expensive. i took my 2 cats for their annual vaccines and they handled them like if they were wild cats. I have two large breed dogs that I only bring to this location even though there is a groomers that is closer. One of my pups are a Pitt and I worry about how she is perceived. David has worked my pup twice and gives me a piece of mind while she is behind the door. He seems to genuinely care about her overall health which is priceless. This location of Petco closed several months ago and moved to a clean, bright and non-depressing location on Lexington, just a little bit north of the old one. Soooo much better. What is with the UES and mistreating animals? Unprofessional staff, dead fish in fishtanks, sickly birds, and incompetent groomers. Ok, so there have been a few associates who are friendly (one star), but there have been way too many hits than misses during my visits to this Petco. One time, my boyfriend came into buy a few freshwater fish for our tank and we noticed sick and dead fish in the tanks. The associate seemed to brush it off when we mentioned it to her. Fishtank care 101: leaving dead fish in a tank can produce a huge amount of ammonia and other pollutants that could kill all the other fish. Why didn't the associate with the title "aquarium specialist" realize this? Most of the birds are molting and look sick. Watch the video, see for yourself. The grooming department: turnover is high, that should tell you something. I think anyone with at least one arm can get hired as a groomer here. I have never taken my dog to be groomed here because I have witnessed the groomers mistreating animals. One time I saw a young man grooming a small dog. He was clipping the dog's face and the dog kept moving away, avoiding the scissors. The associate kept saying "sit still" and after about a minute, he gruffly grabbed the dog by its face and said "SIT STILL, GOD!" I felt so bad. Professional groomers would never handle a dog that way and never yell at it, which puts it into deeper stress. Although not fully affiliated with Petco, I do applaud the volunteers and the veterinarians of LUV MY PET (second star) who visit this location a few times a month. They offer vaccinations, micro chipping, heart-worm and flea medication to the public and they don't charge an "office visit fee," just the costs for the services done. They are very kind to the animals and provide a lot of resources for pet owners. Buy from local pet stores instead, nuff said. read more

I can see how coming here for the vaccination clinic (Vetco) could be stressful and not worth it if you have to wait. We came on Saturday at 12:30pm and there was only one person ahead of us. We had a heartworm test so we had to wait 10 minutes for the results and were still in and out within about 25 minutes. Dr. Opperman was great and made sure to check that our dog was healthy prior to administering the vaccines. read more

Having recently adopted a dog, I've spent quite a bit of time at this 86th/Lex Petco location. The beauty of the store is that they have a lot of stuff. I can't really vouch for the prices but on a Sherpa carrier, I found the PetLand Discounts a few blocks away to be cheaper. I found the check-out staff to be just fine; some of them barely friendly and some of them very friendly. They also advised me that I can return any items my dog did not care for which in our case, turned out to be plenty (the dog simply does not like commercial treats). They were nice, courteous, and patient with the returns. I do find that they are scarce on floor support....often hard to find a sales person to assist. So, perhaps they can use some more staff and maybe management can do a better job teaching sales staff to be outgoing and available. Also, I learned that each store has their own circulars...thus prices between stores can vary (which personally, I find troubling). read more

I have been using them, on and off, for 10 years, and I would like to comment on "Jade N"'2010 s remark below "I just think everyone should know that Petco gets all their live animals from mills." I have never, ever seen a dog or cat for sale at "my" Petco at 86th and Lex. In ten years. Whereas for much of that time there was a puppy mill seller a block away. Petco, in my time, has only only only only permitted the ASPCA and other adoption agencies to come in, for free, for "adoption days." Completely creditable and honorable. For those reading, this review applies to their aquarium and tropical fish services only. My overall experience with Petco's tropical fish department has been awful. I purchased an aquarium and some fish 3 months ago, and all I have to show for it is a slew of dead goldfish and a cloudy and empty tank. Despite numerous visits, nothing the staff recommended (including a slew of pricey chemicals, additional goldfish, and more water changes than I can handle) have worked. I will say, the staff is very nice and accommodating, they just have no idea of what they are talking about. If you are interested in tropical fish, I would suggest seeking out a pet store that specializes in tropical fish (which is what I ultimately did). read more

I bought a guinea pig here in March. I know, I know -- you're supposed to adopt -- but it was an impulse decision. She was too cute to leave in that little glass tank! Anyway, I brought her home with an additional $100 of accouterments, as I was a first-time pig owner. All of this was reasonable. Petco has a 15 day warranty on any pet you purchase: if within those 15 days your pet has a health issue, you can bring them back and they will receive free vet care. Well, on Day 13 after purchase, my guinea pig developed some crust in one of her eyes and it remained half-closed. I Googled, determined this needed to be addressed by a vet, and high-tailed her back to the store. Jose, who had helped me purchase her two weeks before, was very kind and attentive to her, confirming it was right for me to come and even insisting to pushy customers that he needed to help me and my pig before them because "the animals come first." Adorable. So under the terms of the warranty, she would remain with Petco under their veterinary care until she was completely better. Jose warned me, though, that I needed to call frequently to check up on her, because people have a habit of bringing their sick animals back to be treated, and just never coming back for them. This horrified me! 1) How many sick pets is Petco selling? and 2) What kind of monsters go through all the effort to bring a helpless little animal into their lives and then just abandon them? Anyway, so I made a point of calling every few days to check up on her, and even came and visited her in person twice. There was a wide variety of helpfulness on the phone calls, from rude employees who gave next to no information and acted like I was inconveniencing them by calling about my sick pet, to the woman who I guess is a manager or the head of the small animals department, who always sort of chuckled when I called but nonetheless gave me a thorough update. They wound up keeping her close to 3 weeks -- irritating to me, because they claimed she was fully better by about week 2, but their vet comes in so infrequently that the required "vet stamp of approval" to dismiss her was hard to track down. Finally, though, I called and was told the vet had signed off and I could pick her up. When I came to the store, the woman I'd spoken with on the phone several times said something like, "Wow, I can't believe you actually came." What?! It makes me so sad to think about all the pets who must've just been cast off over the years for this kind of attitude to have such prevalence. In the end, I'm pretty sure I must've spoken to every employee at least once on the phone, and was actually known as "the crazy guinea pig lady." (I walked in one day to visit her and the girl I asked for help grinned and said, "I've heard about you!") But today, at least, my little girl is all better -- I love my little furball, and shame on those UESers who abandon their pets when they need you the most! read more
