The store itself is alright, but this review is for the dog grooming. My husband took his mother's dog to this establishment yesterday, he is an elderly dog and very small. My husband was advised to drop him off yesterday for an appointment at 1:30 for a bath and haircut - got to make him look good for Christmas. Anyway, it soon gets to be around 4-4:30ish and my husband still has not heard from Petco. Now, I tried to reassure him that the little guy was probably alright. But each time my hubby called, he was told that the dog was not ready. He was finally ready at almost 6! I favor Pet Food Express over Pet Co, especially this location. I have a new puppy and have been frequenting pet stores lately and I noticed that every time I come here, no one ever greets me or asks if I have any questions. I walked in one time and needed help picking the right sized harness for my puppy but couldn't find anyone available to assist me. Everyone was preoccupied or helping another customer. No eye contact with any staff, although busy which is understandable, I'd still expect my presence to be acknowledged. I waited around for what felt too long (20 min) and left. Another time I came in to buy an exercise pen and had the same experience. For that reason, even if this place is the closest pet store to home, I will drive the extra few miles to Pet Food Express where I have received consistently excellent service. read more

If I could give the grooming 0 stars I would. From the moment you walk in you are stared down by someone annoyed you interrupted her phone time. Then she proceeds to tell you everything wrong with your dog, which is obvious and the reason you're there so your dog can be groomed. I also gave them a heads up on the phone and was told it wouldn't be a problem as they offer a de-matting service. This is not the first time I've come in when the same girl tells me she can't groom my dog for reasons that when she's not there the other ladies have no problem doing. (De-matting) a dog who is prone to matting. I've had her 9 years and she likes to roll outside and on the carpet and normally I groom her and it's no problem but I'm pregnant so figured I would take her in but the groomer refused to take her again, she's the only one that ever refuses. I took her to bark and bubbles and they happily took my dog and said it will take a little longer but not a problem so my day off work paid off. No need to come into a rude and unhelpful situation again. read more

Wow. When I went in, no one greeted me, which is not a big deal. But I had to look around for someone to help me in the fish section. I told the worker I'm a newbie and he was not very helpful and made me feel like he didn't want to help. Someone with good customer service would start showing me things that I need and where I would get them in the store. He didn't make any suggestions or anything. I ask one question, he answered the one question. No tips on things I need to know or anything. I only asked what kind of fish is good for beginners with a small tank, what kind of food, and if the water needed to be special water and then he seemed to have gotten tired of me and thought of the brochure, gave me one, and left me. Many times I've ordered something only to have the website later show the item is no longer available. So you don't get something you were counting on. After a horrible experience at San Mateo petco, I brought my dog over to this one to get groomed. He was checked in on time and was ready to get picked up within a little over four hours. He came out looking really great and the groomer (Julie or Julia I cannot remember her name) did a really awesome job on him. She was very nice with my dog and even added a cute bow tie on his neck. I would give five stars but a few years back I came to this location and had a bad experience with grooming when my dog was a puppy. When we ate fish When we past anything that resembled fish when we past pet stores in the car, at school, and at home Now it's been 3 years and my husband and I were shopping. It was soon to be my daughter's birthday. We decided it was time to get a fish. We bought something called an Aqua Farm. The fish swims at the bottom and herbs and veggies grow at the top. Thinking that the would be easy since it came with everything we bought the tank and put it together. The fist time we put a school of fish inside the tank and after less than a day they all died. We brought back the fishes and a sample of the water. They took the fish and tested the water for free. Are water was fine and the fish may of been cold. We went back and bought another fish. It died too. We will try one more time. Each time we went back the service has been great and staff is very knowledgeable about all the different types of fish. If you have a receipt they will refund you your money back. read more

My dog needed dog food, so i head on over to petco by tanforan. I noticed my dog's nails were kinda long as well, so might as well get a nail trim since i was already here. Now, its not my first time getting the nails cut here, (3-4) times actually, and the emotionless, bitter and slightly rude groomer/ counter girl with short curly hair asked for paperwork and vaccinations. What?! This is the first time i've EVERRRR heard of vacs needed for a EFFin nail trim! Ended up denying my poor Chiweenie of a nail trim... I was so upset, i even offered to cut her nails MYSELF if she,d let me borrow the clippers!!! So i left furious and did NOT even stop to buy the dog food at Petco. This place gets a big five stars, not so much for the store, but for the dog grooming. YES - LISTEN UP, POOCHES AND POOCH LOVERS - A DOG GROOMER I CAN ACTUALLY RECOMMEND! Who would have thunk it. After several attempts at getting the pooatch trimmed at the lah-dee-dah "specialist" "boutiques" in San Francisco (places that did a terrible job, places that were full of dogs just chaos with dogs everywhere, places that did not have an appointment for months, places that made an appointment then postponed again and again, places that sent the pooatch traumatized for several days), we decided to ask at Petco in Tanforan. Friendly, personable service and an appointment this week!?!? Unbelievable! The San Francisco stores should listen up. The groomer, Lisa, was attentive, loved the pooatch, and did a bang-up job of cropping the critter down to a buzz-cut. She recommended that we come back in a month or so for another cut so that the next one would not have to be so extreme - which was just what I had in mind. We will definitely be going back and, hopefully, making this Petco (and Lisa) our coiffure of choice. read more

I brought my puppy in for a last minute nail trim because I have a lot of trouble holding him down. Lisa took me in at 6:15 and helped me cut my dog's nails. I think her daughter was there waiting for her to get off. But Lisa was nice, she took me in right away and clipped my dog's nails. She did a decent job. Some of the nails looked like it wasn't cut and one of them was cut too much that I could hear my dog yelp from outside of the glass windows he was behind.. but she did her best and that's all I could ask for. Wish it was better because some of the nails were sharp and not filed down til it was smooth. So when my dog paws me he scratches me. Service is friendly. Sometimes they will ask if you are in search of anything, and sometimes they will just walk past you hoping you don't ask them anything. The cashiers are always friendly when I go in. I don't mind the place, but it definitely isn't my go to place for my dog needs. Prices are okay, but sometimes you can find cheaper elsewhere. read more

A typical PetCo store. Nothing too special. The store is actually a lot bigger than it looks and is tucked away at the corner of Tanforan so there's more parking available. The staff is pretty friendly but they seemed a bit confused when you ask for help. This location has all the standard pet supplies but lacks variety. They don't have a very large selection of doggy treats compared to some other locations I've been too, but this place is pretty clean and organized. If you have purebreds with beautiful hair...do not take them here! Fur is one thing, hair is another. They do not understand how to cut hair here and will make excuses about the characteristics of your dog's hair. So if your precious baby dog comes out jacked it's because that's how it will be when clippers are taken to their hair and it comes out that way (so I was told). What a load of crap if I ever heard! You bring em in, you have a pick up time....not ready so they admittingly rush and can't do a good job. Then you know what? Don't do the job if you think you can't do a good job. You have to stand by your work and quality to maintain proper business etiquette. Why knowingly do a crap job and say it's b/c you didn't have enough time? When you work at a restaurant as a chef do you send out a frozen slab of fish on a plate and say here's your blackened ahi tuna? If I could give this place negative 10 stars I would have. They caused my dogs and my family suffering for the rest of their lives. A year and a half ago I brought both of my dogs for a full service pampering with the Petco in Tanforan. WORST decision EVER! I have a shiba and a husky. They literally blinded my shiba by spraying a cleaning spray in her eyes and when I picked her up (after they lied to me many times that my dogs are fine), they tried to convince me that she was okay even though she couldn't open her eyes and was clearly blind. Good thing I didn't believe them and brought her immediately to the vet ER where she had to get her eyes properly cleaned and I was told that if I had waited any longer, she was going to have irreversible damage. But surprisingly that's not my big problem with this horrible, absolutely terrible place! They also SHAVED my husky. Who the heck in their right mind shaves a husky???? Since then, my absolutely gorgeous dog (who never ever had any skin problems) has not been the same. They completely destroyed her coat which no longer can grow back on. As a result, she has virtually almost no hair and her skin is exposed. Consequently, she gets these terrible rashes and hot spots which cause her to chew on herself until she bleeds. Just now, a year and a half later, she had another episode of those hot spots and she gave herself a huge wound the size of a fist because her fur is so broken beyond repair that her sensitive skin cannot handle the exposure. And btw if you wonder...I couldn't sue the place because apparently pets are considered property in California and all they had to compensate me for were the initial vet visits for my Shiba. To say that I hate Petco doesn't even begin to cover how I feel about whoever incompetent imbecile did this to my girls. Broken for live!!!!!!!!! Hate them! Hope they got fired and never find another job. And hope Petco gets sued really badly by someone, so they will learn to hire better staff because their actions then affect people's and pets' lives for many years to come. My only complaint is the customer service, the employees are ok but Dave the assistant manager... Complete jerk. I rang the assistance button and still waited 10 minutes for anyone to respond. Dave finally comes over and asks if he could help me and I say yes I would like some fish. His response was "obviously"...I was stunned at his reaction I just paused thinking if I should just ignore him or go off... The Petco at Tanforan--nothing special. They've got all the expected stuff that you'll find at any other Petco. I did note that there were five employees around the registers and only one register open (which was being used by a customer trying to return a bag of dog food). Getting the second one to open took a generous amount of coaxing from the supervisor, but it happened and I was able to buy my bag of guinea pig pellets. One thing that continues to amuse me about Petco is their use of gimmicks wherever you look. At the register is a dog treat trumpeting its use of an exclusive "duck and potato formula". W. T. F.? I went there to have my dog groomed for the first time, and obviously the dog wouldn't know what was happening and the staff was alerted that it would be his first time. When we brought him there he was barking and the staff did a terrible job handling it. The staff member helping us was Adriana. She was unfriendly and unwelcoming and really did not even try to help my dog. I was standing with him to calm him down but she had me leave and spent less than 2 minutes with him before saying she couldn't take him. We took him to Pacific Groomers two days later and they were great with him. He barked in the beginning but they actually put in effort to make him feel comfortable and welcome, unlike Petco staff. These are animals you are working with I would expect your staff to be more welcoming and understanding. Owners probably consider dogs like their children and when you take your kids to school you want them to be somewhere where the staff seem like they actually want to work with them. Dogs can feel when people are unfriendly and react defensively. Really not a good experience and left me frustrated and definitely won't be bringing my dog back here. EDIT: my dogs foster mom said he was groomed once before actually and his first groomer had no issue with him either so it really is just an issue with the staff here. read more

I have an english bulldog, for those who don't know, these dogs STINK!!! I've tried all the expensive products to mask the odor, many other groomers and tried bathing my dog at pet food express. Nothing compares to Petco San Bruno....I've tried pet smart groomers, mobile groomers and even other petco's....None compare to the service of Petco San Bruno. I give this petco a two star. The only reason it is getting two stars is because the staff is so sweet and the store is clean. I am seriously concerned about the safety of the reptiles and amphibians at this location. I go in roughly once to twice a week for various items. Every time I stop by to look at the animals they continue to be getting more and more sick. I have a few different amphibians and reptiles myself, and these poor things are definitely sick. The white dumpy tree frog that is larger is so sick. The poor things anus was turned inside out and stuck. Not ok. Then the worst part of it all that made me want to cry... I've been watching the bearded dragons and noticed a few bites on their tails which is sometimes normal. It happens when new members of the family are added into a tank showing territorial strength. However, there are bearded dragons they are trying to sell that have no back toes, completely infected and sick. I'll post a picture of it. If you are reading this and work there, please help your animals live. You need to feed them more as well. They look sickly and extremely underfed. Not to make things better but the tanks have mold in them too. Care for these little lives. They matter!! read more

I'm really impressed by this branch of Petco. I've gotten consistently great and friendly service here both at the register and the grooming dept. Amber did an amazing job on my pomeranian - clean cuts and overall the face, bottom, tail, paws, everything was scissored and shaped nicely. You can tell she really loves dogs and handled my pom with love and care. Sad to hear she is no longer working here - she was an excellent groomer. Real simply stated, this place isn't the best Petco in the area. Try going to Pet Express or a local pet shop or even one of the Petco's on the S.F. area if you can. The service is really slow. The selection is meager findings. There's no one on the floor to help you get things down. They give you a hard time if you don't donate $5 for Seeing Eye Dogs. (And if you knew I donate regularly to the ASPCA would you take back the glares? Jerks.) The layout is kind of confusing, cramped and probably on it's way out. When I was there one late afternoon, I was the only person in the store. Not worth another visit again but I do love the Petco in the Mission funny enough. People in the Mission must have more pets than the people of San Bruno. read more

Sure the store itself blows and there isnt much of a selection, but he was definitely one of the most knowledgeable and helpful workers I brought in some unidentified little baby turtles that I actually purchased from a street vendor in china town of LA because it so damn cheap. Unfortunately, the man who sold me these little turtles didn't even speak a word of English, so I didn't know how old they were, what to feed them, how big they'd get, etc. The only thing I did know, however, was that it was five bucks. Turns out these little critters are actually illegal and high carriers of salmonella (lol). But they're so cute! Anyway, I brought them in and asked the first worker I could find to help me identify them. Michael definitely knew what he was talking about and not only helped me identify the species, but instructed me on how to care for the babies as well as the adults. He also gave me his opinion on the different types of food and equipment I needed and how essential it is for them to have a diet with a variety of nutrients. What kind of idiotic employee would schedule me when no one is working?! I made an appointment to have my cat groomed after talking to the groomer one day while I was there at Petco. I took the first few hours off work so I could take my cat in. I showed up and the cat groomer (there's only one apparently), didn't show up for work and the person taking over failed to contact anyone that had an appointment for that day. They offered me a discount and so I set up another appointment. The day of my next appointment they called me saying that I was scheduled on a day that he wasn't working, so I'd have to come back and that I would still get a discount. Love, love, love the grooming salon. Lisa and Diana are the best and most friendly groomers in the whole entire world. They take really good care of Cupcake and ensure he always comes home smelling peachy clean and without any bad haircuts. We followed Lisa from the Serramonte Petco because she is really great and obviously loves and cares for the pets that come into the salon. Not a whole lot of comment on the store however... they don't carry the food our dog eats so we don't shop there. read more

But recently my bf moved to san bruno, and this place is the closest to buy a betta fish to decorate his room. We found a white halfmoon male betta. Its booootiful! We named him Cloud. minus two stars for no customer service at all. but i think we will be back here to buy other fish supplies, just because it is close by. read more

The Worst. Employees there don't listen to you and give you half-ass answers when you can tell that they don't know what they are talking about. I would prefer if they just told me that they don't know and refer me to someone who might know how to help me with their services/products. And the vaccination is a total rip-off. NOT WORTH IT AT ALL. The vet likes to give my cat the de-worming medication (again) only to get all over my cat's face. He only put half of what was in the tube and half of that is on my cat. So he only got 1/4 of what he should have gotten. Probably the reason he still has worms. All I know is that I ended up spending more time there than I had to due to incompetent staff and leaving with a quarter of the meds and a messy cat face. All I know is that from here on out, it's PET SMART and Banfield for me and my cat. Petco states that it's the "affordable" vaccination, when it cost me $61 the first time, then they want 3 more rounds of shots at $45 each time. That would have cost me $196. Banfield costs $69 to start, then $22 a month and my cat has continuous coverage. You get all the shots, de-worming and neutering. Truly a much better value for your pet. read more
