If you go to the store without your old part in hand you could be finished before you start because in this would there are dozens of options and usually only one of them works. All their people want to help you! I can't say that about many other stores. The big deal for me is how well organized the store is. Everything is nice and neat! I came here looking for a rare solo T3 screwdriver but couldn't find one by itself. I found a 20-pc set that included it but it was more than what I wanted to pay. I asked for assistance by a guy and he did his best to find what I was looking for. Unfortunately, I was stuck with the 20-piecer. To avoid driving across the city I just threw down the credit card. I also needed a small storage box and they had a decent selection. The cashier was super friendly and talkative. No restrooms for customers. A store of this size is a neighborhood institution and it's a slap in the face to not offer this basic service. Castro Valley is a fantastic place to live and we deserve better. I spend thousands at hardware stores and they can't even be bothered to let me use the restroom?? What a shame to watch such a great neighborhood institution go down the drain. Because the one thing that set Pete's apart from the rest was its customer service. Well, you can forget about that now--maybe you'll actually be helped, or maybe you'll get someone who doesn't know what they're talking about--and *doesn't know* they don't know what they're talking about. Maybe you'll be treated with respect, or maybe'll be treated the exact same way they treat you at Home Depot... and possibly worse. Your head honcho down there is totally asleep at the wheel big-time, because they don't know how to hire the right people, they DEFINITELY don't know who to promote to management, they DEFINITELY have no grasp as to how their employees are performing, and they clearly don't know their customer demographic. As it was told to me by an employee whom I won't identify, apparently 2-3 years ago they hired some guy and made him a manager. (I was lucky enough to have never come in contact with this man until a few weeks ago.) This man is confrontational. This man is belligerent. This man wouldn't know the words "please" or "thank you" if you wrote them down on a piece of paper and put them under his nose. And customer service?? This guy seems to be allergic to the words "customer service." This man shouldn't even have a job working with people at all, let alone be a manager. But someone down there thought **promoting him** was a good idea!?! They also thought it was a good idea to hire several other employees who are WAY below the standard Pete set a long time ago. (No wonder so many good employees have left since 2016.) I complained to the top manager, and he said he'd have a talk with this guy. But I just ran into the belligerent manager again yesterday, and it was the same old thing. (I was with a friend this time, and he couldn't believe how rude this manager was, either.) NEWS FLASH: (1) You cannot teach a grown man how to behave with couth if he does not want to change--and this manager has no desire to change. Therefore, he WILL continue to cause problems. (2) Your primary demographic (geez... I hope someone at least told you who we were, even though you apparently don't believe it) doesn't usually go on YELP when they're dissatisfied with a business--we just shop elsewhere. So I hope you're expecting a flood of under-40s to come swooping onto your premises with credit cards in hand, because if this keeps up, you're going to start losing your core market real, real soon. (And P.S. regarding the B.S. I was told that NO customers can use your bathroom because, given that it's not handicapped accessible, the law[??] says that if ALL customers can't access your bathroom, then NO customer is allowed to use it: I guess that means that either ALL of Pete's employees go outside and pee against the wall, or Pete's turns away all severely handicapped job applicants, because THEY certainly couldn't use that bathroom--and it wouldn't be "fair" to let just the able-bodied employees use that bathroom, now would it? NEWSFLASH #2: I myself have a minor disability, and that's the biggest bunch of hogwash I ever heard in my life. Either get better lawyers, or all of your employees should prepare to start relieving themselves against the back wall of your store--you know... so they don't violate "the law". I also read a previous response from "Linda" regarding a 1-star review on 10/27/24 from a guy named Carlos where she said that customers can't use the restroom because it isn't "safe". I'll bet the company that floats Pete's workers comp insurance would be thrilled to hear that one. [P.S.: I've been in that bathroom on more than one occasion. Louie asked if he could help us and BAM he knew exactly what we required. Found us the hot and cold cartridges in seconds. What amazing stroke of luck that we found Pete's. I used to go to this place when I was a kid way before the big box Lowe's and Home Depot stores. They also sell yummy pies you can bake at home too. I was in the market for a larger propane tank for an off-grid application, so I started looking for a 40 or 60lb tank. After doing some research I decided to get the 40lb tank as it was relatively easy to get filled, overflow protection, and not too heavy when filled. Next step was to find a high quality US Made one. I looked at the reviews and this Manchester tank had the best ratings. Much better than Flame King. Finally, where to buy it from. Usually I buy these from the two big box stores or Amazon. Amazon was ruled out due to some poor reviews on their handling of propane tanks. When I checked online to find the best price I was surprised that ACE beat both of the big box stores and I could pick up the tank in less than a week. What I really like about Pete's and most Ace Hardware stores is that they are well staffed with knowledgeable employees, not understaffed like most big box stores. Picking up was easy driving to the back of the store. Ordering online with the ACE Apps was easy peasy and it was ready when they said it would be here. For better service, knowledgeable employees, and competitive prices I highly recommend this hometown Hardware and garden center. This is a hardware store with limited parking , not a luxury casino-hotel with valet parking. Customers have come to understand that requires you to not block ingress and egress of the front parking lot. That's why there is a spacious back lot up the hill behind the store. Your personal rights end where your choices put others at risk of contracting a deadly disease. There were specific mask rules and other rules that Pete's was charged with enforcing to protect the public. Most understood this but there will always be the self-absorbed divas who's sense of community starts and end with themself. All in all, I shopped at Pete's through the entire pandemic and thought they did an exceptional job balancing the needs of the customer with the county health order in place to protect us from Covid-19. I wanted to give one star but I got the item I needed. I went online to the website of ACE hardware looking for 3ft long vinyl coated hardware cloth. Usually I would go to Home Depot or Lowe's but they don't carry what I was looking for. The website of ACE said it was in stock at Castro Valley. When I arrived inside the store I asked where I could find hardware cloth. A female employee said I had to order it at the front desk so that they could cut it. I went to the front desk and they searched on their computer but could not find any. I was about to leave and I decided to search on my own. I found the hardware cloth at the garden section. Maybe the staff should get on the same page and familiarize themselves with their products. The disorganization of this place is frustrating! read more

I want to thank Pete's Hardware for being an essential business in our community. It is hard enough to keep a business successful during normal times, but it is especially challenging during the COVID 19 Shelter in Place rules. I am very thankful that Pete's Hardware understands the CDC rules and is doing their part to keep our community safe. I wish more businesses would follow the rules regarding proper mask and PPE protocol. Masks with a valve are not allowed! I am a licensed contractor and I go to Pete's because they have what I need, and I know I can shop there safely. Very poor customer service at the checkout counter. Their in-store prices are consistently higher than on the Ace Hardware website, even though the site shows Pete's Ace Hardware as "My Store." As far as I can tell, there is no way to look up or place orders on the Pete's Ace Hardware website - it appears to be just an advertising site without a link to their stock or pricing. And not only will they not honor the Ace online prices, the counter employees refuse to call the managers to override the prices or help mediate disputes - it's just "Take it or leave it" And a note to the cocky, rude young guy at the checkout counter: Thousands of businesses have closed in recent years as the Big Box Stores undersell the smaller chains and mom-and-pop stores. I could have bought the florescent light tube I came in for a lot cheaper online, or at Walmart, Home Depot, or Lowe's, but instead I go out of my way to support smaller local businesses. But your attitude drives customers like me to these huge competitors. When smaller companies, like Pete's Ace Hardware, are forced out of business by the bigger chains, YOU will also be out of a job! Every year Pete's probably spends tens of thousands of dollars to advertise and create "Good Will," including sending out $5 Birthday gift cards to members. In a few seconds you just killed that "Good Will" with me. Was it worth that dollar or two to you? Pete's Ace Hardware has helpful experts who give good advice on products and how to fix things. You don't get that at Walmart or Home Depot. Therefore, I will continue to visit your store, but in the future I will only come in for advice and help with problem-solving solutions.........and then I'll go to Home Depot to buy what I need to do the job. read more

I swear I only came in to buy some string! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Fast forward 20 minutes at the cashier my bill came to $30+?Now this is my new go to place in Castro Valley. As far as the size of the store their not as large as Dales Hardware several miles to the south. However they stock more of the things people want to buy. I noticed right away a better selection of plumbing, electrical,home air filters,keys, key rings,loops,belt clips,stove top elements,cleaning supplies,door locks latches and knobs, picture hanging stuff, and tape..they have many different varieties of tapes sitting nicely on display! I don't need any at the moment but may buy some next time just in case...lol If your into home canning of fruits and vegetables they carry a rather large supply of canning supplies too. The growing season is upon us I picked up at least 10 items just for that purpose alone. The people that work here are very helpful and polite too. Would I come back? Double review- came here about 6 months ago for some lightbulb help, the gentleman that assisted me was so amazing.. he explained the different brightness levels, how one type would last longer than others.. I told him in a very elementary way what I was looking for and he was so helpful and did not laugh at my lighting inexperience! Fast forward to today... Monday 7/27. Yesterday, Sunday 7/26, I ordered a camping axe on line. I forgot to note down my order number. I call the store and I get Mark on the line.. I tell him I did not have my order number, but could he confirm that they got my curbiside pick up order? He was so kind. Took my info and looked up my order. He called me back to confirm (within 10 min) and said I could go by any time and they'd have my order.. it was ready for pick up!
