I ordered delivery through an app, and my driver messaged me to say that the manager was brushing her off and that she had been waiting for over 10 minutes for our order. I called the restaurant, and the conversation went like this: Me: "Hi, my delivery driver says she's been waiting 10 minutes?" Manager: "She's lying. She's only been here 2 minutes." Me: "... Um..." Manager: "She's lying to you. She has only been here 2 minutes." Me: "Okay, well, how long until it's ready?" Manager: "What's the name on the order?" Me: "Amanda." Manager: "Oh, it's ready now." I had checked the app and seen that my delivery driver was parked outside the restaurant for much longer than 10 minutes. I understand that I was not there and don't know what transpired between them, but the fact that the manager was so quick to accuse the driver of lying, without even knowing the name on the order, was shocking to me. Continue to really love this restaurant. Today was extra exciting though! I really appreciated that the owner kept his cool and very politely offered to fix the small issue with a customer's dish while they were yelling up a storm of shouts and insults at him and his staff. These people were so self important and selfish and had no cause at all for screaming at the lovely staff and owner here. After creating a ridiculous scene and disturbing everybody else here - including several young kids that were scared to see the stupid customers yelling at the top of their lung, once they FINALLY left the owner went around and personally apologized for the scene and disruption. I don't know what to say. I had eaten at Pete's Egg Nest many times, especially with my young grandson, and always enjoyed the food and the service. I have taken friends there over the years as well as my husband. There has always been a huge selection of breakfast choices and I love that breakfast is served all day. Before yesterday, the staff was always friendly and accommodating, even when I brought my grandchildren, who often leave a bit of a mess behind. But yesterday, sadly, became my very last visit there. I went alone at around 2:00 pm on a Saturday. The friendly hostess greeted me and seated me right away and asked me what I wanted to drink. I asked for coffee while I reviewed the menu. She brought the coffee right away and said a server would be over soon to take my order. When I sipped the coffee, it was lukewarm, not hot. So I went up to the counter right next to my booth to ask for hot coffee. The server started to argue with me. "It is hot!" she insisted. "No," I said, "it is lukewarm." She continued to argue, "It's a fresh pot. It's hot!" I suggested maybe the hostess had poured from the mostly empty coffee carafe on the warming station above of the fresh pot and perhaps that was why it was no longer hot. The unfriendly, arguing waitress poured out my lukewarm coffee in the sink and grudgingly gave me a new cup from the fresh pot. It was indeed nice and hot. I thanked her and said that was much, much better. I then sat down and waited for someone to take my order. The restaurant was mostly empty. At least two waitresses were standing behind the counter chatting. But nobody ever came. I sat and I sat. One waitress went to cash out two other tables but never looked my way. Pete's a badass. I've never seen a friendlier group of hardworking folks in my life. For over 14 years, for 7 hours a day, 6 days a week, he's seated & greeted, and chatted & fed the fine folks of Seattle. And with a smile, I might add. He and his wife run a tight, tight ship here and to say that the breakfast they serve up is cheap is a gross understatement. The portions here are massive and at $9.95 (for most meals) they're a friggin' steal. I had the California Scramble which was burstin' at it's perfectly yoked seams with huge chunks of avocado, mushrooms, and spinach. Add in some wheat toast and a slab of hashbrowns as big as my forearm; it's a real winner. My guy went with the chicken fried steak, with biscuits, gravy, and 3 eggs. Again, it was still $9.95 and it was fantastic. He cleaned the plate and while I tried my darndest to do so, the portions are so massive it simply was not possible. A word to the wise: No matter the line or the names on the list, the lines and tables move and turn quickly here. Pete and his rock star team and fabulous... and while the coffee is, well, not great, everything else here is great, which makes up for it, and then some... and then some. Somewhere in the nether regions between Greenwood and Phinney lies Pete's Egg Nest. It shouldn't be too hard to miss, but it's the kind of place that I'd notice going by and think about for breakfast, but never stop there. No more. And I have to say that it's a pretty nice choice for the breakfast goer. Of course, they have a more varied menu, but if a place has "Egg" in the name of their business, you have to pretty much order that. Accordingly, I went with the chili omelet: since it's sort of a mix of breakfast and lunch food, I feel like it's culinary multitasking and somehow I've gotten so much more done in my day. And with the portions, it will feel like you've taken care of both breakfast and lunch. It comes on a large plate adorned with hash browns that spread across the length of the plate. And this would be one of those oval plates that seem to extend across the whole table. Now as to the omelet, it's in a curious form. The eggs are underneath, with the chili, cheese and onions slathered on top. You almost don't need a fork to eat it, you really could roll it up like a burrito and chow down. Or take it to go. The hash browns are also a nice treat: a little crispy on the top and soft on the bottom. Have to go against the grain on this one. Given all the Yelp props, we were eager to try Pete's Egg Nest out. Turns out we didn't have a great experience here food-wise or otherwise. While they clearly have a dedicated fan base, I'm not sure I understand the glowing Yelp ratings or the lines of folks hunkered down outside in the cold. Pete's portions are certainly enormous. Pete's is a diner style spot with dated blue formica counters, wobbly tables, 70s pleather seating, peeling signs, etc. A real local's spot. Pete wears a blue captains hat for some retro flavor. I had huckleberry fresh toast, which sounded promising but arrived as pepto-bismal pink slices of thick tasteless white bread and contained no actual fruit that I could make out. I"m still trying to figure how they achieved the sureal Barbie-pink hue. The "fresh-squeezed" orange juice was poured from a plastic carton. The scrambled eggs weren't seasoned with salt, and were drowning in cheese. And all those friendly people that supposedly work here and love their jobs? Apparently, there is no time to be friendly during the weekend rush. Pete's is not a place to linger over coffee and conversation. When we did, just after wrapping up our meal, Pete came by and, clearly annoyed, told my husband and I mid sip. "Um. You guys need to leave. We need this table." We missed seeing the check arrive, but the whole thing was so uncomfortable, so awkward, and could have been handled many different ways with aplomb: e.g. insert a sense of humor, remind us the check is on the table. Nah. Instead, Pete just stood there and seemed really, really annoyed. I looked at my husband, who was pretty embarrassed and began grab for his wallet, "Um. Rachel. I think we just got kicked out." We appreciate they are trying to turn over tables here, but it goes to reason there is a probably a good way to do this without making your customers feel like a**holes. Back in San Francisco, there is a renowned bar on Haight Street, Zam Zam, that insiders know serves only vodka martinis. The old owner would bristle then unceremoniously yell at any customer ordering any other drink, and would often kick out customers asking for the "wrong" order. Arguably, the owners cantankerous attitude was part of the appeal. Even knowing the secret of the place and ordering my martini correctly, I found that it was just not fun to see other customers being treated poorly. It just made me cringe, and feel bad. While Pete's hasn't yet achieved cult status, I have to say it also hasn't achieved the basics of good customer service. They came and sat at my table and talked with us. The husband was cracking jokes and the wife is just so sweet. Always stopping by to make sure we're ok and asking if there is anything else she can bring us. They make you feel like family with the way they interact with you. It's more personal. The place was pretty crowded when I went and it was right before closing. However, we didn't have to wait and our order came out pretty quick. I love fast service. Prices are good and reasonable. While we were eating, a SPD Officer came in and sat down at a table near the kitchen where a few employees (or owners) were seated. They might serve breakfast until they close, because we arrived fairly late and were able to order some eggs. My friend had one good cup of coffee and one bad cup of coffee, but she really enjoyed her French toast....and side of hash browns. I ordered water which was delicious, because I have grown accustomed to the crap they give you in Arizona. To go with my water, I went with my usual eggs, sausages, hash browns and pancakes. I have no criticisms. The service was attentive and adequate and the food was delightfully predictable. No surprises is a good thing. As we left there was a line waiting to get in. The sun was out and it started to get hot. Pete went outside with a tray and treated his future customers to some ice cold orange juice. How about the American classics and a few curveballs? Okay, you have your western scrambles, and benedicts, breakfast sausages and biscuits. You also get a nice Greek twist also. Mixed in their selection (and what makes them unique) are things like the Greek Scramble, with Pita instead of bread and Greek flavors. Like any good place with great services, they will cook up anything you want (with-in-reason). They accommodated her request with ease, and with orange juice, coffee all on the fare, we left with barely a scratch on our collective wallets. That is something all can like and appreciate. The draw here is the food, like other fine dining nearby like Red Mill; do not expect to be seated immediately, there is a line, but it moves. Even during fairs and festivals like the Greenwood Classic Car show. You won't expect high class tables or chairs, but who cares, with food this delicious and yummy, what you see is what you get is refreshing. Should you come here yes (well... How I heard of this place: Through my friend Chris, who raved about the neighborhood joint, and convincingly argued that a meal must be enjoyed in the bustling diner. Type of cuisine: Diner breakfasts (lunch also available), including eggs a hundred ways (from omelettes to scrambles, to benedicts, burritos and French toast), pancakes and all the greasy sides you could hope for on a weekend brunch menu! Ambiance: Bustling is an understatement when it comes to Pete's. The medium-sized venue is so packed with people, tables, chairs and a small bar near the kitchen that entering is a feat. Once through the doors, be prepared to wait for a table or spot at the bar. The music playing in the background is recognizable (from Eagle-Eye Cherry to Phil Collins and Beyonce), but slightly odd in the family-owned establishment, decorated with magazine and calendar images of Greece. Small refrigerators holding Juice Works orange juice, Tree Top apple juice and Ocean Spray pink grapefruit juice seem to be straight out of the 1970s, not to mention the linoleum-lined counters! But no one seems to mind in the packed energy of the space, full of a diversity of people. What I ordered: My dining companion ordered a glass (12 ounce) of orange juice and a cup of black coffee. Seeing the antique hot chocolate ($1.95) machine, I couldn't pass up the foamy goodness of the warm, powdered beverage in my thick mug. For brunch, I thought about ordering the breakfast burrito ($9.50) on the daily specials page attached to the menu in order not to have to decide between the multitude of options inside. Once I saw the Bacon, Avocado and Cheddar omelette ($9.50), however, my story quickly changed.The large omelette came with a very generous portion of thick-cut hash browns and your choice of toast (white, wheat, rye, sourdough or English muffin; I opted for the latter). My dining companion chose - relatively quickly - the Special Pan-Sand Breakfast ($8.25), which included two pancakes (though it looked like four), three eggs cooked to your liking (scrambled), and two slices of bacon (sausage was also an option). An additional side of four strips of crispy, fat bacon was also ordered. What I loved: I most loved the fresh, thick slices of avocado in my omelette. The hash browns were crispy, yet soft. The pre-buttered English muffins and raspberry jam deliciously sweet. Why I loved it: The place itself is amazing because of the family feel, the taste of a true, timeless diner, and the humongous portions! First off, I've visited Petes many times and dining in has been a great experience. The staff is super sweet and the food is great. Today was the first time I ordered my salad and fruit to-go. I got home and my salad was missing components but more saddening, my fruit looked like they gave me the bottom of the bucket. Pineapples were brown, soggy grapes, bruised strawberries. :( this pregnant lady was bummed! I usually only want to write reviews when I have something nice to say but I hope the staff can make this easy fix for future orders so each review is a 5/5.
