Denver is fun city where people never seem to sleep. The late night scene is energetic and once the bars close, people are still in the mood for a solid meal! Therefore just like everyone else, we sought out one of the most popular late night restaurants in town. Since Pete's is open 24/7 we were pretty excited to grab a meal well after midnight! Pete's Kitchen is located in Downtown Denver on East Colfax Avenue, between Race Street and High Street. You can't miss the brightly lit neon sign outside with a chef flipping pancakes! There is a private lot behind the restaurant with plenty of parking or you can park along the busy street. We walked inside well after midnight and couldn't help but notice just how busy this place was. An armed security guard was socializing with staff and guests throughout the night. Every time people paid their bill, he was always near the cash register to make sure that there weren't any issues. He wasn't intimidating at all and I found him to be quite personable. The restaurant is very small but somehow accommodated guests quite well. It reminded me of a hip record shop with old photos from accomplishments over the years. Large exposed piping reminiscent of Chicago lofts hung above each table. There were two rows of booths, one along the wall and one down the center of the restaurant. You could also sit at the counter on bar stools next to the owner(s) who happened to show up that night. The menu consists of a lot of breakfast items as well as fried food offerings. Keeping it simple, I chose shrimp and fries. Unfortunately, getting the shrimp grilled instead of fried wasn't an option. This is an old school diner where waistline conscious people probably wouldn't dine. However, I was hungry and just wanted to eat! Our food arrived in less than 10 minutes and we were impressed with the generous serving size. I haven't seen that much shrimp on one plate in years! They were fried to a crisp with a thick coating of batter! My fries were ok, a little greasy but not too bad. I can see why Pete's is so popular with locals. It's always open, people are very friendly, and the food is with worth your money. The convenient location is great because it's away from the bars but still in a busy part of Downtown Denver. So if you want to grab a late night/early morning meal before heading home after a night on the town, Pete's is perfect for you. read more

I was making an order online and saw dolmas as an appetizer, so I pulled the trigger, and I'm glad I did! I can't believe I've never had these from Pete's before. I won't make that mistake again. Homemade and served with banana peppers and tomatoes that had soaked up the lovely oil. It was my favorite of what we ordered today. My gyro sandwich is always top-notch. I love that Pete's gives you plenty of meat with enough tzatziki to slather on top of the sandwich. I can normally make two meals out of this, but I ate the whole thing today. man this place did not disappoint! our first time in Denver, we ordered doordash from here on 3 separate occasions within a weekend that's how good it was! the philly cheesesteak was unreal, and the breakfast burrito supreme was absolutely packed with delicious flavor. these were exactly perfect. also the fries were somehow still crispy despite being in a to-go box for a while while the dasher delivered it to our hotel. i can imagine the fries are out of this world in person since they were great as a delivery! awesome awesome food. also the long hours are appreciated! this was one of the only places nearby open late at night after our flight into denver. locals, you're blessed with this spot!! read more

I was on vacation in Denver and had just completed an afternoon of hiking at Rocky Mountain National Park. Tired, hungry, and a little cold after dark, I had just dropped off my rental car in preparation for my morning flight when I realized I forgot my phone charger in the car. I stopped by Walgreen's across the street to buy a new one, and Pete's caught my eye after I almost walked past it to go get Taco Bell or something else out of sorts for the shape I was in. The view through the window immediately screamed warm, classic diner comfort food in a venue open to everyone from a homeless person to a trust fund frat boy, and that is exactly what I got! I took a seat at the bar and ordered the hamburger steak. I was able to get water right away and order in about five minutes. The hamburger steak came smothered in some sort of zesty gravy on a bed of scalloped potatoes with a side of mixed veggies. I also ordered the soup on the side, which immediately lifted my mood and served as a delightful appetizer. It was so good, and hit the spot exactly as I had hoped. The cashier even came to the bar to take my money and check. Thanks, because I was too tired to get up again! Based on the suggestion of a local resident and backed up by solid Yelp reviews, my husband and I moseyed on over there after a long but great day at the denver zoo checking out all the cute lil animals! We almost missed the diner as it was very small, but we eventually located it and as soon as we walked in I got a cozy feeling from all the pictures of 'Pete', the namesake and founder of the diner, on the wall with various national and local celebrities. Although he wasn't there when we were, he apparently still serves and cooks and cleans regularly at the diner and has been doing so for decades now! The fare was breakfast and lunch Greek style. They had crazy options like the burrito supreme where you could get several meats including gyro meat right off the spit stuffed into a tortilla smothered in chili sauce or verde sauce and cheese. They also had pancake sandwiches and of course your typical Greek standards. I opted for a gyro sandwich (pita really) and fries while hubby got a Philly cheesesteak. Both options were solid. I loved their gyro meat. That really was the star for me. They gave so much! Definitely enough for left overs later. And the meat was so good with their tzatziki sauce. The average cost per plate is about $12 but could easily be the size of 2 to 3 meals. After skimming the reviews I was in disbelief and questioned whether or not I was at the same restaurant many others spoke so highly of. Unfortunately, I did not have a positive first impression. I came to Pete's Kitchen after a late night out dancing. Thankfully, I arrived around 1:30am before their usual rush when the bars close. We were seated immediately. With my group arriving before the rush it left me wondering why the service was still so slow. It only went downhill from here. As a vegetarian, the options that were available to me were already scarce. I ordered the veggie pita sandwich. Little did I realize that the pita sandwich came with nothing but raw vegetables. I was expecting a warm cooked meal and instead got salad on a pita bread. Not only that but they got the order wrong and we're missing ingredients (some of the veggies and feta cheese). Bacon is always greasy, I get that, but maybe when you plate it you don't scoop up half of the grill grease and plate it with the bacon.
