Omg. This was yesterday over on east Colfax. I was originally going to try Park Hill Hub but the wait was too long so I wandered across the street to this gorgeous spacious eatery! It really gave me RVA (Richmond, VA circa early 2000s) nostalgia vibes like for places I worked in around Broadway during college! Wow. Love everything about this place. I'd been going to a lot of coffee shops lately where the style is all like new stuff and new style (which I LOVE) but the style of Tessa Delicatessen was so unexpectedly refreshing. I didn't realize that this part of Colfax was Park Hill! I saw a lot of other interesting places nearby. Can't wait to go back and wander! Not sure if it was the owner that greeted me at the register but she was very friendly and warm. I love the self serve coffee and water and you get to pick a unique mug to drink from. Really strong neighborhood vibe and I think she said it had been open since 2017. So cool! I'm obsessed with the spaciousness and space! My breakfast sandwich did explode all over my hand - so be careful! The egg is soft inside! I got coffee, cheesy hash and the breakfast sandwich. $25 for everything including tip. Tessa Delicatessen was our first stop of the year, and if inviting prosperity involves eating well, we absolutely did it right. We started with their traditional black eyed pea soup because good luck traditions matter. Shortly after, I "found" three dollars in my coat pocket. Was it already my change from the store? Yes. Did I still credit the soup? Also yes. From there, we leaned fully into deli mode. The cheeseburger was solid and satisfying, the Reuben hit all the right notes, and the macaroni salad was exactly what you want it to be. No frills, just done right. Dessert sealed the deal. The cheesecake was rich without being heavy, and the carrot cake was genuinely excellent. Tessa feels like one of those neighborhood spots you can come back to again and again. Meh. Of all the places we've tried this trip, this was the least impressive. Over priced and lackluster. Service was whatever. Brought out burnt French toast, umm sorry it's raw inside, barely cooked on one side & black on the other - how embarrassing. Went in for lunch with my mom and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Caprese on ciabatta, even though I'm usually not a ciabatta fan, but this was honestly the best ciabatta I've ever had. Soft, rustic, not dense at all. The sandwich was delicious overall, though the tomatoes were a little mushy. My mom had the tuna salad on sourdough and liked it. The space is roomy with plenty of seating, and they were playing The Grinch, which made it feel festive. This deli is right off Colfax and provides a pretty wide array of quality deli sandwiches. Parking is going to be street parking, but shouldn't be too hard to find. The inside is quite spacious with lots of seats with lots of cute plants. The sandwich itself is pretty good - I would say that the sandwich bread here is exceptional. This place is amazing. The sandwiches are really good. We went with a party of 12 with most of us ordering either the OG or the pastrami. Wow. Their soups are homemade. I ordered a piece of carrot cake that I sliced in 4 pieces and was plenty for the folks that took a piece and it was also home made and delicious! The service was great. Is there a higher rating than a 5? Take all my money and all my stars this place is THE ONE. I'm a born and raised east coaster do delis always hit close to home but this one had its own spin to it. Yes it offered the usual hits on the menu like a perfect chopped cheese with a sesame roll and The OG which has all of the classic Italian cold cut offerings you could ask for. What stood out even more was how friendly the fully female staffed (at least from what we noticed from the front of house/open kitchen in the front), a sign that pointed out where you could change your baby and in which bathroom (looking at you new parents out there this is a game changer!), massive freshly made ice cubes, marble tabletops and more. Some of these details really made this place stand out but they don't ever lose sight of what it means to make good quality deli sandwiches and sweet treats. Keep in mind we got our sandwiches to go and didn't eat them till 5 hours later...and these were BOMB. The pepper sauce is SO GOOD I'll def ask for an extra side next time. The service was amazing. Far and away, one of the most underrated restaurants in Denver. I wish I lived on this side of town, because Tessa Delicatessen could easily be a 2-3 times a week neighborhood place. The menu is straightforward with every item made with intention and detail. You won't go home hungry. At the helm, you have a husband and wife duo who know what they're doing. The space is larger than you'd expect for a "delicatessen" and its size is deceiving from its Colfax entrance. It's difficult for a restaurant do execute breakfast, lunch and dinner and somehow all three are excellent. I have enjoyed their dinner options like the pastas over the years, but if you can have one meal here make it a sandwich. Hardest part will be narrowing down which one you're going to order. You'll find cold and hot options, and sometimes a special or two. Oh, and while I'm here don't forget about their burger. Denver makes a lot of burgers and Tessa's rendition should be in that conversation. On my last visit, I went with a newer sandwich from their menu, the Tessa Chopped Cheese. Now Denver doesn't know too much about this sandwich and I've been let down a handful of times ordering it elsewhere. NOT HERE. For starters, the bread they use is a slam dunk. Seeded hoagie roll is crisp on the outside and super soft in the middle. My only qualm was how big and bready the sandwich was. Nonetheless, I could eat the bread by itself. The inside melty and the perfect consistency. Is it exactly like a New York bodega? No, and that's fine. It's just as delicious, just as satiating, and just as satisfying. Melty, creamy, salty unctuousness. Easily the best chopped cheese I've had in Denver! Supporting local businesses has always been important. But when you find a husband and wife owned spot doing it the right way without taking shortcuts you want to shout it from the rooftops. Ordered a pickup OG Italian. Service via phone and in person was friendly and quick. The bread was great, crunchy yet soft. However, i do think there was barely any sauce at all as I didn't taste any mayo and certainly did not taste any mustard. Perhaps they forgot it on mine but regardless next time I plan to ask for extra sauce. And the meat was not loaded/packed to the brim, just a moderate amount so i wouldn't say the sandwich filled me up for long. Been wanting to try Tessa's Deli for years and finally had the opportunity and what great place and very busy and almost has a coffee shop vibe with people on their laptops and families/friends hanging out as well! A subtle sign adorns the entrance with larger signs stating breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served. The space has plenty of options for seating with a station to grab your utensils, water, and extra condiments. Service is friendly and welcoming. It was evident the owner at the register knew her regulars by either name or order preference. Everyone is greeted with an enthusiastic hello. I had the most unpleasant experience with an employee of this establishment today. I placed an online order for the brisket sandwich with aus jus. The total was $40. For one sandwich, but I heard good things about this place so I spent the money. I do not eat pork, so I just wanted to specify that it was beef because it's not specified on their menu. I called and the woman that answered did not give a name just answered short and agitated saying hello. I very kindly said, 'Hello, I would please like to get clarification if the brisket is pork or beef?" She literally scoffed at me and said "BEEF. BRISKET! IS! BEEF! IN THE ENTIRE WORLD BRISKET IS BEEF!!" Literally screaming into my ear with the most condescending tone. I was extremely shocked. I have seen pork brisket many times in my life. I just said, "I'm sorry you are so unhappy...." To which she said "OH HONEY (mockingly) I'M NOT UNHAPPY ---" and was literally screaming into my ear. I hung up because I have no reason to argue with a stranger or be belittled on the phone for asking a very valid question. I would not recommend anyone in Denver to go to this place. Being a hateful human being for no reason will never promote business even if the food is decent. The !!!!BEEF!!!! brisket was very dry and hard. The bread was also dry and arugula was soggy. Sandwiches are among my favorite food groups, and Tessa Delicatessen did not disappoint! The sandwiches are huge and packed with layers of delicious ingredients. I ordered the Saint Jude and especially enjoyed the caper mayo spread. The sandwiches are pretty big and generously packed, it's a filling meal but feels well balanced. I ordered my sandwich to go, and it was ready in about 5 minutes which was great. There's plenty of seating inside though if you want to enjoy your meal there. The sandwich then sat in my car for an hour while I had to grab some groceries on the way home, and they were still in great shape. The ciabatta bun is soft but sturdy enough to retain the moisture and prevent soggy buns. I would have to say my biggest critique would be with the shredded lettuce in the sandwiches - I'm not sure this is the best choice, it was just falling out in every other bite. How do you celebrate someone's birthday who just lost their mom! Cute place - open/airy with lots of plants. Order at the front counter, grab your own water, silverware, napkins, and then grab a table while they make and deliver your food to you.
