While visiting Denver for a long weekend I was determined to sample Denver's best local food. While at a wine bar chatting with some locals and the bartenders I mentioned I wanted to try at least 3 different places for breakfast burrito and they all immediately said you "MUST" try Pete's Kitchen. Well, no need to tell me twice I was for sure there next morning. As I was warned there was a line out of the door almost to the corner, no joke!! It actually shows it is good if people are willing to stand outside on a cold day. We waited about 20mins - not too bad Pete's Kitchen is a hole-in-the-wall breakfasts in the 'hood without making brunch a big scene. You have to know what you're getting at Pete's to set expectations: time-tested, affordable, greasy grub. Unassuming, comfortable, reliable and apparently a locals late night/ breakfast staple I skimmed past most of the lengthy menu, knowing I went there for the "famous" breakfast burrito smothered with green chili. Though hardly the most sophisticated place in town, open 24/7, Pete's even makes its own hot sauces, which pair perfectly with greasy breakfast potatoes or juicy hamburgers. Bottom line - Breakfast was excellent and Service fast. I had the Supreme breakfast burrito and in case you are wondering... food is made in front of everyone on the griddle. Quaint and great service!! Price is right and the coffee is hot and plenty! Ps.: we shared 1 breakfast burrito and was plenty of food for 2 people. What a great neighborhood find. We were out looking for a place to have lunch on Christmas Eve. As we wandered around we decided to give Pete's Kitchen a try, who doesn't love a good diner? We were not disappointed. The atmosphere reflected their 77 years in business, the service was prompt and friendly, and the food was plenty and delicious! It's apparent that there are plenty of regulars and still enough room for the new comers like us. A Denver native recommended Pete's and I'm glad that I stopped by. This is a very historic district located upon the longest commercial street in the nation. This location has a diner setup and my friend & I sat in a booth. We were quickly greeted by our server and she was friendly & accommodating. Our food had very large portions. I was referred to this spot by a friend who grew up in the neighborhood. What a great referral. Pete's Kitchen, a diner that's been around since the 1940s. Small and mighty. Lots of history. Friendly staff. I ordered the Greek omelette. Olives, banana peppers, onions, green peppers, and feta. Add spinach for an extra $2. Who knew these flavors would produce a delicious omelette? Very friendly staff and an overflowing gyro - what more do you need?! We stopped in one after for lunch and were able to find a table immediately. Our waitress was very friendly and had all of the answers to our questions. All three of us went with the gyro sandwich and HOLY COW was this thing huge! I had to pick at it with a fork before I was even able to lift it to eat it as intended. Also, the menu said that soft drinks only came with one refill but I am pretty sure we got an extra :) The restaurant definitely has a diner feel to it. Typical diner atmosphere, setting, and ambiance. The service was fine nothing that was so exciting. Got the meal out quick. The kitchen and chefs on the flattop were doing well. The gyro came with tomato and onion and thrown on with the tzaziki sauce on the side which was fairly odd to me. The sauce tasted more like sour cream than anything else. Not really spiced or anything to make it special. The gyro was shaved off the spit but honestly I would have liked it on the flat top a bit more to finish it off as it wasn't that hot or cooked in my opinion. The fries I wanted extra crispy and those came out great. It's also $3 extra for pita bread. They have a GLT and it comes on white bread. Not sure how much more meat is on the bread than the pita. I'm also confused on why the sauce wouldn't come on the actual pita. Again, this is a typical diner experience. Nothing that blew me out of the water. I'm sure it's a staple here in the Colfax area. Service was very slow and the restaurant wasnt busy. Our first server visited our table shortly after we sat down and brought waters (she was definitely a server, not a host). We asked her if there was a kids menu, she said there wasnt, but they could do chicken tenders or grilled cheese for the kids. Then about 20 minutes or so later, a different server asked us for order. I asked him about the kids options, where he told me there were only pancakes available. I mentioned the other options the other server stated, and he said, yeah, we can do that. Both servers seemed indifferent to their work and to being there.. I ordered the Kitchen Greek Salad. HUGE portion. Chicken was good, but my plate was soaked with water from the washed lettuce. Gross. Hubby ordered the supreme burrito. It was okay. The kicker for me was that we were charged $12.95 (Adult price) for each kid meal. I was hoping for nostalgia, and instead was just really disappointed. read more
