Came here after hiking the 25 mile transcatalina trail, all sweaty, dusty, and blistered. We picked this place because it had outdoor shaded dining and a decent view of the street to look for others coming from the interior of the island. We got there a little after 2pm so there were special discounts. I got a margarita for half off ($5.50, regular price $11) and chicken tacos for $1.25 each (regular price $2.50). I think if I had paid full price for either of these I would have thought this place was a rip off, but during happy hour it was a good deal. I thought the food tasted pretty great but I'm sure almost any restaurant would taste great after hiking 11 miles that day. My friend got the chips and guacamole and the chips were those really thick chips that hold the guacamole very well. Overall I thought the food was pretty good as long as you go when they have some specials. The only thing is they didn't really advertise the specials very well so you kinda have to ask. read more

So Pete's is not luxurious but it is the most authentic Mexican food on the island. The cooks are super friendly and they enjoy listening to loud Hispanic rap music. Don't let that keep you from trying their huge breakfast burritos and fabulous tacos. Ask for their variety of salsas as they are superb. We enjoyed our coffee with the wife's favorite vanilla creamer. The venue is lower end but it's my style of relaxing and eating great food. Give it a try. read more

We've tried many restaurants in Avalon and this is the only one we truly love. The staff are super sweet and fun, and the food is delicious. I've been here a few times. I usually have coffee here every morning when I stay at the Atwater. I always notice the cook having so much attitude. And yesterday, my wife and I decided to stop by here for some late breakfast. Sure enough, the Pete's Omelette lacked quality and taste BUT MADE FULL OF ATTITUDE from the grill cook. Im so glad I discovered this local spot. There's a walk up counter and outside seating. It opens early, closes late, and serves quick Mexican food. Perfect for a quick meal in between your Catalina adventures or a late night snack after bar hopping. I loved their well seasoned Chips and chunky guacamole and oddly enough I really enjoyed the ice cream! They also serve beer and strong drinks if you're into that hair of a dog thing. Haha. We stop at this place every trip to Catalina. It's by far the best Mexican food on the island. It's located right next to the mini golf (highly recommend) and next to where alot of the tours to the interior of the island leave from. Pete gets three stars for being open when everyone else we phoned at 8:30pm on a Tuesday was closed, and for providing decent Mexican food. I also liked Pete's enthusiasm when answering the call and taking the order. I called ahead and ordered a chicken burrito, chicken salad, two fish tacos, chips and salsa, and french fries. I walked over from our hotel and the food was ready in about five minutes. While Pete was ringing it up, he didn't mention the fries but somehow what we ordered minus the fries came to $49.89 and I didn't feel like handing him any more than fifty, so I left the issue of the missing fries alone, and dropped the eleven cents into the tip bucket. Pete's burrito is heavier on the beans than anything else, but I prefer my burritos with more vegetables than meat anyway. All the food was pretty good, but whether by mistake, deliberate or that Mexican food even at a dive stand is expensive in Avalon, fifty dollars for these items seems high - especially considering that the night before we had had a sit down dinner of oysters on the half shell, Caesar salad, pasta with shrimp and Australian lobster tail for $120. (plus tip). Go for Pete's if you are hungry and nothing else is open, but perhaps get a receipt to try to figure out what exactly the prices are so that at least you'll know that you are overpaying versus being overcharged. read more

My wife was a bit cold so we asked for hot water and as we see the hot water faucet from the coffee machine she lies straight to our face saying they don't have hot water. The family talked about coming here next time we visit Catalina island but not anymore. LOVE Yelp steered me to a place that was closed, so I asked the Universe to find me someplace else for dinner. She did not disappoint. Pete's was open on a Wednesday night, despite Yelp saying it's closed. It's outdoor only, with spacious patio seating. Very friendly cashier. No waiting. Excellent fish taco and carne asada taco. Excellent buffalo milk. My first time trying the classic Catalina cocktail! It's basically a boozy chocolate banana milkshake. I watched her peel the banana, so you know it's fresh. LIKE Order at walk-up counter. Cheap! The employees were speaking Spanish and laughing -- they were having a good time, which is nice to see. Not very busy. You should change that, Yelpers! MEH Nada. We were in Catalina for a port day and decided to stop in here for some bison (buffalo? I can never remember which) burgers. The burgers were great! They come with this MASSIVE pile of fries so bring your appetite! Our friends ordered a plate of nachos to share among the 3 of them, but after making a dent, they still couldn't finish. Nice little place to grab a quick bite and enjoy a beer outside. Food is mediocre. Service is friendly and nice. A small bottle water is $2.50, so a family of 4 is $10 for water seems CRAZY! I might put up with it if the food was above average, but that was not the case. The fish taco fish was not local fish and the fish batter seemed super greasy and soggy. Fish tacos should have a light, crisp batter on the outside. Not here. Salsa was good and super spicy. Beer list was decent. Not sure if we will make it back. read more

Pleasantly surprised by this little spurs happy hour. $1 chicken tacos were really good - moist chicken with a nice but very light spice. The salsa was wild - maybe a little too hot. All in for for tacos, a beer, and a water bottle for about $11 is hard to beat on an island. It is what it is - a taco stand. If you find yourself hungry in Avalon town any time after 8pm, you'll notice that most eateries have already closed for the day... but don't fret! Head over to Pete's, order one of their heaping orders of carnitas nachos and a beer and be happy! The carnitas nachos sincerely shocked me; I was preparing for stale-ish, chewy chips, mushy pulled pork sitting in some sort of stainless holding bin bathing in some overly-salty brine. Holy crap, was I wrong! An order of nachos is large enough as a huge meal, or sharing with two or three gracious guests. If we had more time, I'd have gone back to try their burgers and burritos, because those that I had seen ordered them were gushing over how tasty theirs was. And, you'll be hard pressed to find a harder working crew. On Saturday night there was a live band and they were poppin! I'm definitely going back my next trip out. read more

Gonna give a one item review.. But might be the most important item to us on this whole island. Our favorite restaurant on the island Picnic Fry (if you can call it a restaurant) looks like it closed this year, and we've been talking about their ceviche all year. We were on the way to the mini golf that we always play at least once, and figured that we'd try the ceviche at Pete's just to see if it could compare to our long lost fave. Drum roll please ...................... It DID! Ceviche was really fresh and vinegar-y. chips were nice and crispy and we were all digging into it until it was gone. Didn't take long, and the people there were pretty nice. Still not as good as Picnic Fry ... RIP.... but this place is now the best ceviche on the island, and we'll have to keep eating this until a new winner is crowned. read more

The worst service (or lack of) I have ever received. One of the few places open for breakfast on the island, but the Vons grocery store is your better option. We tried to order our food at the window marked "order" and were told to take a seat. The waitress then went to 3 tables who clearly came AFTER us. I made eye contact with her many times and then she went back to the order window. I went back to the order window and was told she'll get to us. We just left. The RUDEST I have ever been treated. I worked in the food service industry for many years so I am typically incredibly understanding, but this place is just awful. Be sure to check out their health code violations as well- I'm glad we didn't eat here now. Vons Market had great service and selection + the Catalina Island Brew House has amazing coffee, enthusiastic workers, and a good selection of smaller breakfast items. read more
