This place is a gem - every time I visit I am in awe of their great service and amazing food. There are limited parking spaces close to the door but there is free street parking nearby. I recommend always making a reservation especially if you are dining on the weekends or during peak hours. The service here is always on point, they are attentive and always make sure you have anything you need. The wine and liquor list is extensive and the food menu is all fresh ingredients. We got our staples: eggplant, snails, french onion soup, and steak. I promise you this is the best french onion soup you will ever have in your life. It felt like they wanted to turn the table over before our party of 6 even sat down. Some of us ordered Old Fashion drinks but just received bourbon. I've been to Petit Louis Bistro twice now - once for brunch outside and once for dinner inside, and I LOVE IT. It's like walking into a bistro in Paris. The inside of the restaurant is so lovely, warm, and homey. With European, antique decor - it just has an ambience that you have to see! All the food I've had has been excellent: the escargots, the short ribs, the cheese plate for dessert, the beet salad, ... everything. And there's so much more I want to try: duck leg confit, moules aux fines herbes, the pate, the scrambled eggs with Gruyere and ham, their cassoulet, steak tartare, and ALL THE DESSERTS (tarte au citron? creme brulee? pot de creme? I want them all)! They also have a great wine list. My friend and I were able to try a bottle of Beaujolais nouveau when I was there last (November), and we had an after dinner drink with our cheese plate for dessert (Comte). I've heard amazing things about their martinis, which are poured tableside and filled to the brim, so I'm tempted to try a martini on my next visit. I visited Petit Louis for Sunday brunch with a group of friends. We were warmly welcomed by a number of hosts and servers and sat down. The decor is reminiscent of a Parisian cafe and very fun. We started with some coffees and mimosas which were all very tasty. The bread service came out early and was okay -- the butter was quite hard and difficult to spread and the bread was fine. We ordered a few appetizers to share the chilled potato soup (excellent) and the aubergine with pesto and cheese (it has a more elegant French name that I'm ruining, but that's only because the dish was amazing and I couldn't focus on other details!) For my main entree I ordered the croque monsieur (pictured). This dish is hands down one of my favorite French foods but unfortunately I found the one at Petit Louis too heavy and rich and could barely eat half of what was on my plate. I was a bit disappointed but overall I very much liked the experience and would love to go back to try the dinner service! read more

Sitting at the chairs at the booth felt very tight and my knees were almost touching the table. For the three course meal I ordered the Velouté de Champignons, Boeuf Bourguignon, and Profiteroles. The Velouté de Champignons was great. The soup had a light consistency, but still tasted very rich. I really wish the bread was baked better as it would have been a great addition to eat with the soup. The bread was tough on the jaw while chewing and the butter was cold making it very difficult to spread. The highlight of the Boeuf Bourguignon was the vegetables. The mushrooms, carrots, and mash potatoes carried the dish. The beef, though cooked very well and tender, lacked flavor. Maybe more sauce would have helped elevate the flavor of the beef. The dish in total was very good as the beef paired nicely with the vegetables. I just wish the beef did not taste so plain as it's the main part of the dish. The dessert looked how it tasted. A simple cream puff with vanilla ice cream. An okay, but not the best way to end the night. Overall, the kind servers and ambiance made the experience enjoyable. I think I went in with too high expectations as the dishes lacked an element of uniqueness that would make it worth the price. Petit Louis has been on my bucket list for the longest time, and I finally got a chance to dine here last Saturday evening for a friend's birthday dinner. And I want to go back. If you want a well executed casual dinner, with no limitations or requirements, this is the restaurant to go to. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you are walking into a Paris bistro, with the European antique decor, the ambience is phenomenal. The food is phenomenal, from the eggplant napoleon, the beet salad, mesulin greens salad, the grilled shrimp, croque monsuer, the steak frites, the pan roasted salmon. And the desserts were also good as well, from the creme brûlée, to the chocolate mousse, and the ice cream of the day. What I also love with dessert menu, they offer wine parings or an after dinner drink with your dessert. I will definitely try an after dinner drink with my dessert next time. Perfect ambiance for a date night, from the street light décor to the etched glass windows inside a cute cottage! I asked my girlfriends to go for restaurant week, and it was the best decision ever! They offered 3 courses for $40, which included an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. A couple of us opted for the $19 wine pairings. I got the beet salad (SALADE DE BETTERAVES) to start, which exceeded my expectations. The orange vinaigrette paired well with the goat cheese and the flavors were very bright without being too sweet. My veal entrée (BLANQUETTE DE VEAU) was out of this world. The tender veal, paired with the cream sauce and the mushrooms was perfection. To take each bite with some lardon and pearl onions was a beautiful union, a true flavor explosion in your mouth. FRAISIER, the strawberry glazed dessert with vanilla sponge was actually my least favorite part of the meal. While the strawberry and lemon flavors had a nice tartness, the sponge was a bit dense for my liking. We also ordered pommes frites, which were thin and crispy. All of the wine pairings were good, but the dessert wine was extremely sweet. Overall, a wonderful night with delicious food of generous portions and great service. read more

I came here for dinner during restaurant week on a busy Friday night. My friends and I made reservations and was seated immediately as we arrived. Despite the fact the restaurant was packed, our food was served immediately and our waiter was attentive to our table. All three courses was delicious and filling. Usually most restaurants give smaller portions during restaurant week, but Petit did not fall under that category. My friends and I were very pleased with the service, the quality of the food and portion. We had a truly delightful birthday brunch for my brother here this past weekend. The service was wonderful. I wish I could remember our server's name, she was so kind and pleasant. There were three of us, my brother, sister and I, and we had a cozy table in the back near the wine shelves. We felt very safe dining here, and appreciated that they took our temperatures when we came in. We ordered the onion soup, the beet salad, the croque monsier and foie gras. It was all delicious and very satisfying without being too filling (we wanted to make sure that we had room for dessert). We ordered the chocolate mousse and a dessert not on the menu, a bavarois. It reminded me of a petit fours or a napoleon; it was layers of a dense yellow cake w layers of raspberry mousse and puree, topped w dollops of chocolate mousse and chocolate pearls. Both desserts were outstanding. We had a lovely time here and I am planning to bring our mother in once the weather is nicer. Delicious and consistent foods with good service, albeit a little slower on busy nights. A couple of salads we've had in the past few months were not over the top on tastes but everything else has been very good. Here, one of my staples are snails so I will plan a visit just for those and whatever else seems mouthwatering that day. The service is always good and the dishes are well timed for the allocated dining timeframe. Some cocktails aren't as hefty as they could be, for example, a martini which should pack a good punch. But maybe that's just me thinking boozy cocktails should be hella boozy. Only true downside is that noise levels are really high at peak times and we prefer not to scream at our dinner companions, especially while eating. Parking is also not usually good in that location and some of the drivers seem to not care whether they leave dents in doors. Some even park so close that it prohibits you from entering your car requiring you to Gumby it over to the driver's seat from the passenger side allowing a true appreciation for a light dinner. Hence, I recommend ride share if possible. Overall, with the prix fixe lunches and the delicious dinner choices, it's a still win. read more

I'm a food snob, originally raised in NYC and living in Miami. So, my standard of measure is against those communities, not Baltimore; my rating is based off that comparative. In Baltimore for the day, I wanted to find a fun bistro for myself and friends. Searching various online sources, including Yelp, I concluded this should be a perfect choice. Our plans changed, and when I called to alter our reservation, the hostess on the phone was pleasant and accommodating. On arrival, plenty of parking in a large circumferential lot. Attended immediately by the hostess and seated outside on a perfect late spring day. Our server was exceptional. Friendly, professional, thespian articulate and menu knowledgeable with ideal accuracy. Most appetizers were exactly what was ordered. My companions left no evidence of their vichyssoise, reporting excellent flavor. The house green salad overflowed the plate and was described as "refreshing." Mine fell short. Described as a shrimp and zucchini fritter, similar to a hushpuppy, it was actually tempura fried shrimp and zucchini sticks. Not my expectation, but tasty. Main courses were not as elevated as anticipated. The Sweetbreads was a small serving over a large mass of butter sautéed mushrooms. My companion liked it, but did not rave. The Duck Confit also looked more appetizing than reality. Again, marginally enjoyed without a glowing description, an unfinished plate. The Steak Frites was the reason for dining at Petit Louie. Myself and another concurred on the following: Prepared to medium as desired. But, a slightly tough cut. And, both the steak and fries were very heavily salted to a point of unpleasant. Dessert was an order of profiteroles. Cold, sweet ice cream in a flaky, crispy pastry. Prices were better than NY or South Florida. As a repeatable plus, service was excellent. 3-3.5 stars - boosted for service. It was a graduation weekend (Thursday night) with the crowd building very fast. To Petit Louis for its classy French cuisine. A Roland Park favorite for almost two decades. Another spectacular restaurant in the Cindy Wolf empire. I start with the Soupe a L'oignon Gratinée (a.k.a. Louis famous onion soup). I'm a big fan. Super yummy cheese topping. The biggest problem is not wearing the soup! The whole roasted chicken is the go-to signature entree. Unfortunately it's designed for two. In its place, I order the Magret de Canard. This duck breast is perfectly cooked medium rare and sliced. I order the Pommes Frites, which are usually perfect. They are served with mustard. Lots of fries, but they lacked the crispness I expected. My server didn't charge me. For dessert, I order this decadent Tarte. Perfect crust, delish whipped cream. Please ask for my server, Helen, she was outstanding. read more

When you asked how she was doing in response to her asking us, she said " I'm amazing " First time I have experienced that. I think the word '' amazing '' used so loosely nowadays by the current generation must be the new Gen Z way in describing everything, which most of the time is exaggeration. I started with the mushroom soup. Very good especially with their wonderful French bread. Have you noticed though that the price of soup now in a restaurants everywhere is astronomical? They can at least give you a huge bowl if they charge well over $10.00 now for it. The salad I got here was tasty, as were the mussels a hearty tasty appy that I ordered in addition. The entree took a long time though after the salad and mussels, and it was early too, maybe 6:20pm' ish. I sat down about 5:05. It is interesting that a restaurant in the Baltimore region gets filled up with patrons so early here where in other cities it seems half empty til 7 or 7:30 especially in daylight savings time. Perhaps the middle aged/octogenarian crowd just dines early in Maryland, like in Florida and then retires early before beddy bye. ; ) Either that or it is too dangerous to be out after dark in this city with crime, even though Roland Park looks very safe and suburban-like. The veal entree finally arrived and was top notch culinary on a nice presented plate, but sorry to say, on the skimpy side. Seems to be the trend now. The more you pay, the less you receive. And that is pretty much everywhere. I may go back, not sure. Expect a big $$$ bill even with just minimal alcohol ordered too. I only had one bottle of Belgian beer, Only French bistro I know in this city which is sad, and I love French bistros. Baltimore is limited. Suggestion to the chef- Pile a bit more in quantity on the plates at the prices you are charging. Doesn't only apply here but across the board. Give the public what they should get for the $$$$ we shell out to you. Overall, dining here was of very good quality plus good service as well. I also suggest that the owner/staff let you come inside even a few min before they open rather than 5pm on the nose opening the door. Why let them stand out in chilly or hot temperatures and even in the rain? OR, put a canopy up outside the door. Opening the door at 4:56pm is not that much of a difference read more

Yes, yes, another 5 star review. But it's true! Had a great dinner here with my family one chilly night. Because of COVID we decided to eat outside (which was a good call because inside was absolutely PACKED). Despite the cold weather we were toasty warm thanks to the heat lamps they provided. Since we were one of the only groups outside, we each got our own heat lamp and it was very comfortable. Our server Jordan was great and very attentive. The cauliflower soup was velvety smooth and had a delicious truffle and herb undertone. I had a few bites of my partner's french onion soup (because you can't NOT try their most well-known dish) and it was just as melty and flavorful as everyone says. I ordered the steak frites cooked medium and it came out perfectly. The frites were also exactly right-- long, crispy and spiced with herbs (be aware that they fry in peanut oil). The herb butter that came on the steak was such a rich treat and paired excellently with both aspects of the meal. The inside of the restaurant was very cozy, quaint, and European chic. The bathroom was also retro and very classy, with an old school toilet complete with pull-chain. The restaurant nails ambiance and transports you to a different time and space. I would love to come back for another dinner and eat inside once it's more safe to do so in a crowded setting. read more

I finally got here to Petit Louis in Roland Park after years of wanting to! Definitely worth the wait! I got the Prix Fixe Civilized Lunch Menu which was 3 courses for $29.95. Considering that I had gone for lunch on a weekday, I did not expect a wait but every table was filled and there was a 45 minute wait at 1:00 on a Thursday. Upon getting seated I was asked what type of water I wanted and delivered bread. I'm not sure if all the servers work together there but I had different people delivering food versus taking my order or dropping off bread. That was probably the only downside to my experience. I understood they were busy but I'm typically used to having one server throughout the meal. On to the food. For the first course, I had Roasted Honeynut Squash Soup with Crispy Sage. The soup has a chicken stock for those curious but was nice and creamy. Great for a cooler afternoon. Came out nice and hot and the sage added a nice flavor dimension. For my entree and second course, it was the Pan Roasted Rockfish with a celery root purée, cauliflower, and a lemon caper brown butter sauce. The fish was light, and delicious when mixed with all the accoutrements in the dish. That was my favorite dish of the meal! I could eat it over and over! For dessert, they didn't have the original one with the Civilized Lunch; so they let me pick one off the dessert menu. I went with the Dark Chocolate Pot de crème with Chantilly cream. Such richness in the dish it was a fantastic way to close out the meal. I LOVE a good chocolate and Petit Louis knocked it out of the park! Overall, I'd give 4 and a half stars! This is such a wonderful restaurant! The setting and ambience is perfect (I sat inside because of the heat, but there is excellent outdoor seating as well). An elegant restaurant, but a little loud (that's the last slightly negative thing you will hear). The food was excellent (escargots, truite almandine) and a daunting wine list, but don't be intimidated- I found an excellent bottle for $27. We always love coming to Petit Louis, and this experience was also very pleasant, overall, but got off to a rough start. The bread and butter were both very cold; the butter wasn't at all spreadable. The server acknowledged they were having an issue with the fridge. No problem. Make adjustments during quality control, right? More on that in a second. The frisée lardon salad was amazing as usual, as was the French onion soup. The foie was so silky smooth and really good - my first time trying it. Things were seemingly getting better. Then the entrees. The duck confit was dry; tasted ok, but dry. How could duck confit be dry? The duck breast was raw and we had to send it back to be cooked a bit more. The steak was ordered medium but came out very rare and partially raw - sent that back too. Outside was crispy though, indicating a definite refrigeration issue. Both came out fine the second time. Our main server was not knowledgeable about the preparation of the dishes - might have been a new member of the staff. The server who brought us the cheese chariot though - she was super knowledgeable about everything. A really great time interacting with her. Overall, a mediocre experience at the Bistro. I've been twice now and am impressed with the Napoleon eggplant appetizer as well as my scallops dish. It's a great way to transplant yourself into another country when it's less than ideal to travel during this pandemic. They have expansive outdoor seating and spacious indoor season so you can choose a setting that fits your comfort level.
