I love the food here so much! It's so delicious and has generous portions for how much it costs. I would say it's a good value for the food ration; the cooks don't skimp out on your food. You can tell the food is made with love or by people who are passionate about their career or profession. The restaurant has a chill and relaxed feel to it; the times that I've come in, I get my order taken almost instantly. The food is cooked very quickly; I just have to sit down for a few minutes, and they call my order number. The cashier that l've gotten when I usually come during the weekends is a young woman. She's very welcoming and always greets me when I enter the restaurant. She's very patient with me when I place an order. I tend to get the names of the foods mixed up, and I have had to ask her for help a few times. She's always willing to help me and even explains to me the difference between each meal and what the meal is composed of. read more

Great little hole in the wall takeout spot is next to the Orinda Theatre. The staff is friendly, the food is always delicious, and they have a couple of outdoor seating options right outside if you're lucky enough to grab one. No heating lamps. There's one table inside, but this spot is best for takeout. Food: Their gyros are always a good crowd pleaser but I do like their lamb dinner plate which also comes with a side of Turkish bread. Good eats for less than $15 a person. Street parking is pretty crowded but there is a public garage behind the building. read more

1 Star because there are no Zero Star ratings. Dirty, slow, unfriendly, menu almost impossible to see behind the counter. Employees, far from ones they should work in a restaurant or any job in the hospitality industry. The food was overcooked, the vegetables were moose swimming a sea of oil, poorly packaged and have spilled everywhere, including the napkins. This place will not give you tab water because they want you to pay for your water too and when they do sell you a bottle they will not give you a glass to poor it in. Nice little cafe next to the Orinda Theatre, it's not extavagent but if you want a quick Greek meal this is your spot. For the health oriented there is a delicious salmon salad smootherd in a vinegar sauce and my favorite the Athenian tri tip. Not many table inside with a few on the sidewalk. Used to come here occasionally when I first moved to the West Coast and was living in Orinda. I remember it being very good. I've been living in San Francisco for the past 12 years and happen to be in the neighborhood. Stopped by with my wife and toddler. We've been to about every Greek place in the city. Everything from the corner Gyro shops to Kokkari and Orexi. I will say the quality of Petra is five stars and the value is like 50 stars. I couldn't believe how much food we got for around 20 bucks. What they have seems to be working, but I don't see any reason they shouldn't be able to raise their prices by at least 50%. Get here for cheap while you can! read more

What a gem! In Theatre Square right next to the Orinda Theatre. I love lamb and this place hit the spot! Lamb souvlaki plate (small chunks of yummy, perfectly seasoned lamb) served with grilled eggplant, zucchini and tomatoes, along with rice and a small piece of pita bread. The food was delicious, the portion was generous and the prices very reasonable. There are only four small tables inside but a few outside. I think it is mostly takeout. The owner Alex was great. He made me feel at home. A genuinely nice man! He's been in business for 40+ years! It's very challenging to run a small business like this, especially during the Pandemic. It feels good to have a full, satisfied tummy, support a small business and not break the bank while doing all of this. This was my first time. Small little cafe cooking made to order Mediterranean food on the spot , right next to the Lorinda Theater. I recommend ordering the Gyros, 7" for $6.25 and 9" for $7.25 . You will love it ! MY usual order is the Nicoise salad-- YUMMY for less then 8 bucks- SO much salad- large generous blocks of tuna , feta , cucumber , red onions,tomatoes, with calmative olives,topped with olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing! I feel satisfied and healthy after I complete this meal. I also tried the Macedonian chicken- 1/2 chicken , eggplant and feta cheese with greek rice topped with red sauce.I did not really care for this dish. This was a one hit quit for me. I will keep returning to Petra Cafe to have their Delicious Gyro - I love the combination of herbed lamb , lettuce, tomatoes , onions and Tzatiki sauce on a soft pita bread ( OMG) Dont plan on eating there cause there is less then 7 people that can fit comfortable in that place! read more

Since I work in the area, I've been eyeing this place for a while. It's located right in Downtown Orinda's small and quaint theatre square. It's a small, hole-in-the-wall and family-run restaurant making decent Greek food. I was on a lunch break and dropped in for a gyro. I ordered the Greek Salad Wrap, which was made on a 9" pita wrap. The cashier girl was initially very friendly and personable. The older workers behind the counter made my wrap on the spot and within a couple of minutes I was able to sit outside, pour myself a glass of water and enjoy the early-spring sun. The pita itself was a little plain and dry.... And it wasn't until I started biting into the wrap's feta cheese, onions and veggies where the flavor began to come through. (It could've used some tzatziki sauce.) The bigger 9" pita also seemed too big for the salad--it wrapped everything in, but I had to take a couple bites to dig in. I've heard their gyro wraps are great here, but I've yet to give this place a couple more tries to really be convinced this Greek place stands out from others. I was also eyeing their Hortopita wrap, which sounded a little more indulgent with the eggplant and feta, but that's for another day. This place definitely delivers that quaint Orinda charm and fresh made-to-order integrity of their traditional Greek items. Quick service, great pick-me-up. Turquoise Mediterranean Grill is also located down the same block and they seem to be equal in comparison. Not in love, but I wasn't expecting a five-star experience either. read more

This is our go-to for gyros! I usually get the chicken shawarma because the chicken is always soooo juicy and delicious. We normally get a side of fries for the little one and my husband gets the lamb gyro. They have limited outdoor seating right now, but it is shaded and first come first serve. We like to eat ours fresh since the sauce tends to soften the wrap, but I suppose if you wanted it to go you could ask them to separate everything and build it yourself when you get home. I definitely recommend if you're craving gyros! read more

Nevertheless, on my last visit, I witnessed the chef preparing the food without gloves, resulting in considerable mixing and potential contamination. The main reason why we walked into this restaurant is because they accepted credit cards, and Turquoise frowns upon it. The restaurant is itty bitty on the inside. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. Too bad there is no air conditioning available. Parking: Street parking or the garage (which is free in the weekends) We ordered: 2 Gyro Dinners and 1 Gyro Yum!! This seriously is the best gyro that I have tasted in the East Bay. Been ordering take out here for years and have always been extremely happy w/ the quality and value. If not for these massive price increases I would have given 4 stars. But, since last month prices have just increased almost 100%. Troy salad was $7.95 (now $13!) and cup of soup went from $3.50 to $6! Yikes that a huge increase. I was not expecting that much difference from the posted menus prices from a month ago. Owner Alex was very fast to respond to yelp review, which is great and shows he is really paying close attention to his business which impressed me. Increased review from 2 to 3 stars because of him. He explained price increase was actually last October, and I recall everything going up about a $1-$2 back then as well. This is the perfect place for fast food. I think it's healthy. The service is quick prices are reasonable and the location is great. They sit right next to the movie theater. There is limited seating inside but there is plenty of seating outside so you can tab a seat outside. Just hope it doesn't rain. read more

I remember this restaurant as being very good. I went on 6/7 & had an awful experience. The food seemed not fresh - giro meat reheated & burnt. The grape leaves as hard, almost still frozen, no olive oil or flavor. I asked for a lime with my Corona & the look I got was like I spoke another language. The women on the cash register was super rude. She was only treating white customers well. I did not ask for shawarma sauce- just the green. So she obviously LIED. I had said to her- I saw your previous customer leaving with it, but she said well it was the last one. Also, the chicken dish I asked her about was not because I wanted to order- but was curious to know how it was prepared, so may be I could order it next time. However, instead of telling me what it was she just bluntly said - don't worry about it, we don't have it anyways. Very poor reaction from the owner. The gyro meat is decent, the bread is very good, the Avogolomeno soup was pure salt--couldn't even taste the lemon--so we pitched it in the trash. They have always been stingy with the tzisiki sauce for the gyros, but tonight they literally put a grape-size dollop on our two gyros, and I wasn't about to pay a surcharge to get a reasonable amount. Food is decent but slow for what it is- service lacks. I've been here 20+ times and no smiles or talking. They seem to have different people working the register every time/never know the menu or speak a word besides giving you the total to pay. I asked if there was anything with beef- no beef. What's the item on the menu that says beef? Silence. Never call out dine in or to go orders, you have to check in and they never seem to know what's on the counter. Haven't annoyed me enough to avoid the place entirely. Do have tables outside and sell bottled beer in their drink case on the positive side. The service here is basically the same service I would give to a stranger who barged in my house uninvited and demanded I cook them surf and turf. The generous portions allowed me to enjoy another meal the following day. Like several of the other comments, mine is the same. Customer service is crappy and the food was not good either. Orinda is an expensive high class upscale town. Not sure how this business fits into the demographic in any way. We ordered a rotisserie chicken dinner. The chicken was dry and overcooked, the vegetables were cold, and their rice was ok. The older gentleman was rude! I KINDLY asked for some sauce because the chicken was dry. I did not say that chicken was dry, I just asked for some sauce. He looked at me and sighed.... Following that he tells me he normally doesn't give it out. He literally gave me a teaspoon of sauce that probably cost him $0.10. Well, it cost him a bad review on Yelp. Hello Mister, you don't sigh at your customers when they ask you for something worth less than $0.10. Please be nice to your customers. read more
